Tom Waits and Jim Jarmusch are two of my favorite artists. If you don’t know their stuff you need to check it out. My favorite Tom Waits records include: “Nighthawks at the diner,“Swordfish trombones”, and “Franks wild years”. Jim Jarmusch is an incredible director who i’ve had the pleasure of meeting several times in the past. He a veteran of the NYC downtown scene circa late 70’s early 80’s . My favorite films of his include: ” Stranger than paradise”,“down by law”, and “Coffee and Cigarettes”. Dudes are official!

Right now i’m in Quito , Ecuador for about a month . I was awarded a SMART power grant last year from the Bronx Museum and the Federal government. I was very fortunate to receive this grant amongst thousands of applicants. The objective is to provide mural workshops with kids from 4 different schools here in Quito . The experience so far has been pretty amazing . I’ll be here for about a month working on this project. Of course i’ll also have time to pursue other projects. Here are some examples of said projects:

Like many others out there I was shocked and saddened to here about the passing of one of hip hop’s true legends , MCA of the Beastie Boys. Though I didn’t know him well MCA and I travelled in many of the same downtown circles and shared many of the same friends. The Beasties were a part of what I personally consider my favorite era in hip hop. The Beasties were a part of a circle that contained such legendary greats as Public Enemy , LL Cool Jay , Run DMC , EPMD , and many , may others. MCA was an integral part of that and will be greatly missed .
I remember seeing The Beastie Boys at Lollapalooza in 19994 out at Randall’s island . It was an amazing line up that included Beck , Cypress hill , The PFunk all stars , and many others . It had just gotten dark and people were really amped up to see them as one of the final acts of that day . Flavor Flav came out and amped up the crowd in one of the greatest intro’s i’ve ever seen . They came out and ripped into ” So watcha won’t ?” with an energy that tore apart the place. Flav stayed on stage for most of the set which was dope. I’ll never forget that .
Rest in Peace MCA , you’ll never be forgotten.

This post is about my homies in Rio: The Fleshbeck Crew. In the early 00’s I came to Rio and began painting with them on the regular. They came recommended to me by my man in Sao Paulo , Binho, as guys I should hook up with in Rio. He told me that they were among the best there and he wasn’t lying. They are. They still are . Various members of the crew included : Br (or True as he later became), Toz,Lets,Pia ,Riot, and also SWK from the Santa Crew . What set them apart for me was that not only did they pull off some incredible productions all over the city but they were organized enough to set their sights on commercial projects. In Rio they’ve had many commercial clients too numerous to list . They also started a clothing line and maintained a store for a while . It was easy to see that their influences came not only from poplar culture but also from the easy going Rio lifestyle that incorporates the beach into everything . I just wanted to post a selection of some of thier work, particularly that of BR, for you to enjoy.
The graff scene there is really cool , very positive and productive. I haven’t been there in a while but I thought I’d post these photo’s of a few of the many pieces I did there. Peace to my Homies ,The Fleshbeck crew ! They’ll soon be in NY !

I really enjoyed working on my installation at the Andrew Freeman home in the Bronx. It was a great experience that was artistically challenging in that i’m not asked very often to create an installation. I hope I get to do more projects like this in the future. If you get a chance check it out .

Last week I had the pleasure of hosting students from the LEAP public art program in my studio . The students spent an hour in my studio as I gave them a tour and spoke to them about the importance of public art and answered their questions after. It was a great experience for all and is something I enjoy doing from time to time. Leap art is a great program that does city wide public art projects while at the same time putting them in touch with real working artists.

I recently went down to Miami to create an 8’x24’ foot long painting for the Art Wynwood fair alongside the great Futura, Aiko, and Liqen . Also shown were mural size paintings by How and Nosm, Retna , and Ron English. I don’t have installation pictures yet but those will come in a future post . I had a great time painting alongside Futura , would I hadn’t seen in a minute , as well as Aiko and Liqen , who both created incredible paintings in short span of time. All the works came out amazing and I was really pleased with the whole event. Here are some works in progress shots from our adventure in Miami. Special thanks to Meghan, Teddy, Martha Cooper, and of course Tony Goldman!

Every so I often I do a painting that opens the door to a whole new body of work . This painting was like that for me . It started out as a simple commission from a guy who wanted me to make a painting that was almost like a travel journal of sorts . It was a very open commission for me and since I always collect a lot of stuff whenever I travel it was pretty easy . This was one of the first paintings I did where I combined the various mediums of collage , acrylic, oil, and Spray paint in one peace . Now I do it all the time but back then it was something new.

“The Journey” 2006
65"x70”, mixed media on canvas,
Private collection

Haha! I went to see the museum of modern art’s new exhibition, “Contemporary art from 1980 to the present “.I noticed that one of the cases contained an invite from a solo show I had in the east village in 1984 . I thought it was pretty funny how this invite managed to infiltrate the show. The museum in fact does own a print of mine that they purchased in the 80’s for the permanent collection but I have yet to see it exhibited.
