My dear friend Lisa Leone is exhibiting in Los Angeles some rare photos of early Hip Hop icons before they blew up.

“THEN”
by Lisa Leone

Opening May 11th 2012, 7 - 11pm
rsvp: lisa_leone@hvw8.com

New photo exhibition documents hip-hop’s moments of truth.
Before hip-hop was an industry, it was a community.

THEN, a new solo show from photographer Lisa Leone, is a deeply personal portrayal of the last days of hip-hop’s innocence, of a culture caught between an intimate past and a global future.

Born in the Bronx and raised throughout New York City, Lisa Leone has been surrounded by hip-hop culture for virtually her entire life. By the late eighties, as a widely published photographer, she was in a unique position to capture a behind the-scenes perspective on the spirit of collaboration that fueled hip-hop’s early artistic triumphs. “To see a young Nas in the studio with Q-Tip, Premier and Large Professor was not only inspiring,” she reflects on one of the candid photos included in the show, “it is ‘the decisive moment’.”

THEN explores a series of such moments through the eyes of the young artists that would go on to become the hip-hop generation’s biggest stars: Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Wyclef Jean, Run DMC, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Rosie Perez, the Roots, Queen Latifah and many others.

But these are not mere portraits. Each image captures a unique interaction between an individual and their environment, and is supported with text drawn from new interviews with the subjects themselves.

“It was still fresh and we, the generation of that movement, still dictated what it was and meant to us and not the mass media. MTV wasn’t calling the shots. We were still telling them what the rules were.”
– Rosie Perez

“THEN is a testament to the natural eye and passion of a real New Yorker, presented now through the collected three decades of her work and experience.” – Eric Haze

“No one…can fail to be moved by Lisa Leone’s evocative portraits of Hip Hop legends captured in the midst of their young lives…set in those moody South Bronx scenes of abandonment that was their home.” – Henry Chalfant, producer of “Style Wars”

In remembrance of Keith Haring I am showing a sculpture I made and traded with him in 1986, he was one of the first to buy and collect my work and always encouraged me to continue sculpting. He was a kind person to me and many who knew him, always optimistic even in his moments of great struggle. HIs loss is a profound one but has left an enduring mark and influence on New Yorkers and Graffiti/Street Artists worldwide. His has been the blueprint for many both in fine art and commercial art too. I felt his influence as seen in my Bboy abstracts which I began in 2005 referring first to Modernism then by chance I came a cross a book of Keiths wk related to DJ and Dance culture, it was serendipitous that it reconnected me to my old friend as he was not my first influence but his work left an indelible imprint in my subconscious. As the years pass I have good memories about how generous he was at his shows and parties something many young and old artists still don’t understand, he celebrated the art and people first and let the business come second. As I do prepare for my show at Pratt Institute I feel he would be proud that we have an academic platform to showcase and discuss our art form and culture.

Big up to my crew mates Agents of Change for pulling off an amazing accomplishment in London by creating the largest mural in town.

Megaro Hotel- http://www.creativereview.co.uk/cr-blog/2012/april/londons-largest-mural

The beautifully executed mural is an amalgamation of abstract styles that merge into one cohesive expression of the new urban modernism each artist individually explores in their personal works.

The mural, which encompasses two sides of the five storey Georgian building in which both Karpo and the Megaro Hotel are situated, was designed and painted by four members of street art collective, Agents of Change: Remi/Rough from London, Edinburgh-based Steve More, LX.One from Paris, and LA-based Augustine Kofie.

It took two weeks to complete and over 150 litres of emulsion and 160 litres of spray paint were used.

Last night I attended the preview dinner at the Brooklyn Museum for the Keith Haring: 1978-1982 exhibition. I took a few snapshots off my iPod. Upon entering the museum the first thing I was struck by was that Toxic and my brother Kel First had paintings displayed by the elevator, this was a nice surprise considering so much of the focus on contemporary urban art is focused on street art perse.

Once at the exhibition space you are hit with a massive painting and next to it a mini pop shop, *note take the kids you will leave broke, lots of cool stuff to get. Entering the gallery one is struck with awe at his prolific creativity, you can see from his early beginnings signs of great curiosity in things and his ability to seek out and develop the language and fluid techniques to illustrate his thoughts. I was most struck by a collection of 12 or so notebook pages that had abstract geometric shapes one per page, I had never known of this in his work, the correlating reference to it was in his notebooks, his journals are impressive and show his interest in symbiotic analysis. It is from these two things I walked away with a greater appreciation of his journey.

The subway drawings are epic, they recalled a time when NY was fun and when taking the train one could be overwhelmed by the graffiti inside and out of the trains and usually Keiths satirical drawings waiting for you at the station.

It was nice to see old friends attending, Martha Cooper, Haze, GBO, LEE, Fab Fred, Futura, Tabatha McGur, Tony Shafrazi, and Julia Gruen the director of the Haring Foundation.

I had a nice surprise this afternoon when Part1 and Noc167 showed up to the studio. I had to take a memento photo for myself. These two gentlemen greatly influenced my creative career as a subway painter and as a developing artist. Their contributions to the culture are significant and it can be said with confidence that they were the best of their generation. They both have illustrious histories and you can read more about Part in the book published by Ket and On The Run Part1 TDS for more on NOC167 read a piece Andrew Castrucci wrote a while back- NOC167 OTB-MAFIA-TDS

Here is another look at one of my favorite pieces. Drawing in space has been one of my strongest talents for years and this work is a great example of what improvising can achieve. Don’t be mislead its not as random as it looks there is a great deal of thinking behind how it appears and how its viewed. Enjoy.

This also applies the culture of Hip Hop in many ways. This is an exciting time for re-eductating ourselves and to put that knowledge forth, dumbing down yourself or your culture serves no one in fact its what you’ve been preprogrammed to do. The Graff/Street Art community suffers from its lack of ‘self academy’, I am not talking the lack of art talk linguistics but the ability to be introspective and critical of itself. Blogs and soundbites are the norm and lead into the predictable patterns of retention deficit and lack of meaningful knowledge hence the lack of meaningful discourse not just with ourselves but the creative culture at large.

I first met the duo La Pandilla in Miami during ARt Basel. We were in the same show curated by The Co11lective. They made a strong impression on me both with their works and intelligence about art. They are Puerto Rican nationals so that made me especially proud of the depth and commitment these young guys had, not to sound condescending but I am several years removed from my beloved island and have not been following the art scene there.

What I enjoyed about Art Basel this year and last was the strong presence and authenticity of Latino artists. They are probably the most unique artist on the rise right now and will likely continue to influence the somewhat staid Northern continent. Perhaps it will inspire those younger Latinos that are on the fringe, I don’t know but I sense something incredibly unique and formative ahead. Interestingly the painters I met were also former graffiti writers who still have love for the art but now find it increasingly important to express themselves in the history and imagery of their own cultures. La Pandilla is unorthodox in their style and narrative which is somewhat of a surreal graphic mash up of carefully illustrated lines weaving the imagery together. Keep up with them here- http://www.la-pandilla.com/

Its been a busy several months of back to back exhibitions leading up to Art Basel. My last stop before Miami was my exhibition at the Carrack Modern Art Gallery in Durham NC. The show had a great deal of work and process that one can see in the presentations, there are more images to come from Durham and Miami where I exhibited these works at the Co11ective Exhibition and took part in the ‘In Situ’ mural project with Poesia and others.

It’s a story of family, perseverance, redemption, love, hope, tragedy and joy. Come away grateful as you prepare for another trip around the sun.

Lemon Andersen’s “County of Kings” was presented by Spike Lee and co-produced with the Public Theater and the Culture Project to critical acclaim.

Lemon and HHTF, with the help of El Museo del Barrio, are bringing the show back to the people for a special holiday performance!
