Friends,

Your financial help is needed to fund this amazing project. Basma Hamdy & Don Karl are the curators of Walls of Freedom. For the past one and a half years they have been working on this project collaborating with 50 photographers, 30 artists and 20 authors. Since the beginning of the revolution, they have been involved in Egypt’s thriving urban art scene working closely with a network of its leading artists on mural projects, events and exhibitions. They started to work on this book in order to professionally document the Egyptian Street Art explosion. The amazing artworks of the two and a half years pieced together, tell the whole story of the Egyptian revolution.

Recently, Cornell University’s library launched the first exhibition of the Cornell Hip Hop Collection. I was invited to contribute some notable tags/signatures from my ever growing tag collection. They are now on display at Cornell along with lots of interesting items from their collection. The mission of the Cornell Hip Hop Collection (CHHC) is to collect and make accessible the historical documents of Hip Hop culture, and to ensure their preservation for current and future generations. Since arriving at Cornell in 2007, the CHHC has grown to include more than 50,000 items. “Now Scream!” is its first comprehensive exhibition. On view are rare and classic vinyl records, photographs, event flyers, live performance and interview recordings, artwork, ephemera, and more, along with many unique Hip Hop artifacts on loan from artists, supporters, and friends.

Lima, Peru is a bombed desert city filled with more noise pollution than any human should ever have to bear and it never rains! That last fact along with the tremendous amount of cars and the rock/dirt mountains that surround the city make for a dirty city. Dirty and polluted. Nevertheless, its an interesting place filled with great writers and some cool people. Sure, crime is high but beer is cheap. Getting around is fairly easy and if you can avoid getting robbed you can have a great time.

I ventured about a bit in between painting huge walls and was able to capture a little bit of the writing activity and the flavor of the city. Here’s a brief look.

Last week I had the honor and privilege of attending the Latido Americano graffiti/mural jam in Lima, Peru. The event was organized by two of Lima’s most respected writers, Entes and Pesimo, and celebrates its second year this year. Apart from being hosts, organizers, and muralists as well the duo brought together great talent from across Latin America with a few guests from other continents as well. The line up included Guache (Colombia), Super (Peru/Germany), Hes (Chile), Fisek (Chile), Charqui Punk (Chile), Tiws (Denmark), Soten (Denmark), Benas (Mexico), Toxicomano (Mexico), Saner (Mexico), Sego (Mexico), Bien (Mexico), Inti (Chile), Saile, Jeanvi, Pau, Steep (Ecuador), Cuore (Argentina), Fog, Jade (Peru), Meki (Peru), Yuin (Australia), Oz Montania (Paraguay), Phetus (USA) and many other writers from Peru.

The events walls were in the Centro Lima section of the city which is known for its high crime rate, loud cars, and of course government buildings and museums. Phetus and I found ourselves painting our first wall on a very hot block known for document forgers and other hustles. We ended up becoming friends with the local thugs and for three days we painted with the locals watching while cracking jokes and offering us plenty of booze and other stuff. We painted the same block as Hes and Fisek, two style writers from Chile who really painted some detailed burners.

The event was a non-stop paint a thon for us all and many of us didn’t get a chance to meet each other until a week into the event because we were spread out around the city and on a hectic pace to finish. Since Phetus and I painted quickly and with less detail than most we squeezed in a few spots and some night action as well.

I spent time photographing as much of the event and the city as I could. Here is the first installment of photos from my trip to Lima.

Thanks again to Entes, Pesimo, and the whole production team in Lima.

Received news from my Danish and Finnish friends about Sabe’s first solo show. The information and a preview is below. Its not to be missed if you are in Helsinki and no matter where you are the pieces are fantastic and a good addition to any collection or home. Check it:

Europe’s most legendary graffiti artist is arriving to Finland! It’s not enough for SABE to paint on a sunny Sunday, he paints like armageddon is coming, while the sun rises. His passion towards painting almost reaches the brink of insanity, this drives him still after a active 27 year career to the Copenhagen train yards. The result of this is, he has become one of Europe’s most followed and respected graffiti writers.

MAKE YOUR MARK Garage / Gallery have the honor of being the first gallery to display a SABE solo exhibition. He last visited Finland with his good friend Ghost and noticed how passionate the Finns were towards the graffiti culture, because of that, he also wanted to have an exhibition at our gallery. Mixed media has been used in the displayed artwork. (spraypaint, airbrush, markers…etc)

Sabe: Still around.. Vernissage: Friday, 8.2.2013 from 18 to 21 o´clock

Aindriais Dolan aka PURE TFP aka Andy is a well known New York City style master with over 30 years of experience bending letters and producing beautiful graffiti. I first came across his work while in high school and riding trains and they were in the form of his PU throw ups. They were big, solid, juicy and proper. Later I saw Ven rocking a Pure painted jacket to school and was very impressed by the letter style and color technique. It was a great jacket. Soon after at Henry’s I saw images of his handball courts in the Bronx and Ven showed me his early trains on the 1s when he painted with FBA. The man had a great style.

Fast forward many years later and we are good friends and crew mates. His styles range from simple to complex mechanical swirl and his color usage and decorative techniques are the most impressive. The man can rock bubbles like no one else. He truly is a Bronx stylist of the highest degree and every time he paints he comes correct.

Most recently he has taken to painting on canvas and creating abstract ink drawings. I truly enjoy seeing them and was moved to purchase a painting. Since they are so new and such a rare treat to see I am sharing some here. For those of you who would be interested in buying/commissioning one you can contact Pure directly through his website. I always say why have a poster print on your wall when you can have some great original art?

Every year for the past 10 years or so the Art Basel fair comes to Miami bringing with it some of the biggest players in the art business together for sales, parties, and a great time. Over the years it has become Miami’s biggest money reaping tourist attraction with numerous other art fairs joining in to showcase their galleries at the same time (Pulse, Fountain, Scope, and Nada to name a few).

At the time real estate tycoon Tony Goldman know for revitalizing Soho in New York and Miami Beach began to transform the Wynwood neighborhood using graffiti and art as a way to revitalize a neighborhood most known for its poverty and warehouses. Tony used art to promote the community and make the neighborhood seem appealing to investors, etc. In 2009 he opened the Wynwood Walls which he described as a graffiti park and restaurant. Many important writers such as Retna, How and Nosm, Futura, and Os Gemeos have paintings there.

During the same time a graffiti and mural gathering began called Primary Flight and hundreds of writers showed up to paint the walls in the Wynwood district of Miami. They with the help of local politicians, art collectors, and others convinced the community and the local government to allow the buildings in the community that were abandoned or neglected to be allowed to be taken over by artists. And so it started and the word soon spread around the world.

This leads me to my own trip and time in Miami this December.

I went down to Miami as part of a new collective of artists formed this year in New York called the Free Agents Collective to mount an exhibition and showcase new art by the collective as well as paint (of course). In years past I had headed down but only painted outdoors so here was a chance to be part of something organized that would be sponsored and legit. So we headed down to Miami to showcase at the Miami Light Project’s The Light Box thanks to some financial support from folks like All the right, Hi Arts, MLP, Ur Place and others. The collective which consists of Carlos Mare, Alice Mizrachi, Phetus, Klass, Ezo, Queen Andrea, and myself packed up and left.

My time in Miami was spent working on the exhibition and the mural at MLP. Outside of that I ventured around to document some of the great pieces and murals that were being created on the streets and was able to catch up with great painters like SP One, Ewok One, Dero, Wane, Risk, Cope2, Entes from Peru, Mear, Jick, Estria, Prime, Kenor, Pez, KR, Daks, Amos, Erni, Pose, Puppet, Rime, Ces, and many others. I was even able to drop a quick piece. No beach but at least a piece.

Oh yeah, and I got to hear Bobbito spin some great old school Salsa at a Fania party and see Rakim rock it live at The Stage thanks to my friend Angie and the folks at Heineken. And saw a great show called Luxotica by Ivory, Ces, and Tich. I can’t forget Miguel Paredes and Ronnie Cutrone’s show - top notch. There were others but too many to recall.

Overall a great trip that was too short and too fast but hey, there is always next year. Maybe I’ll even catch one of the fairs. I hear Pulse was good.

Here are some flicks.

Cekis is one of Chile’s best writers and a member of its old school who happens to live and work in New York for many years. I first met him in the 90s when I was publishing Stress. Back then he was a tourist and made a trip to New York and caught up with me at the Black August concert I was working. He was humble for an artist with so much talent and years under his belt and was generous enough to send me a drawing later that ran in the pages of the magazine. Years later I really got to meet the man and become familiar with his art and technique. In the past few years I have witnessed his amazing murals, pieces, and his transition into making works on canvas. This summer we caught up and I was able to photograph some new works with a theme of migration/immigration. I was very moved and am happy to share images I captured of his studio and of his art with you.

As the writers continue to push the boundaries of their imagination many, as you know, have taken to dedicating themselves to creating muralists. This new generation of muralists with roots in the graffiti world are an exciting and very active group spanning the entire globe. Many have already achieved worldwide recognition for their amazing work and their ability to span the globe sharing their talent. Artists like Blu, Os Gemeos, Nunca, Loomit, Aryz, and Retna all come to mind. In this vein I introduce you to the work of the Peruvian artist, Jade from the DA2C crew, from Lima. Jade’s murals reflect his travels and his experience as a working artist in the streets. His art part self-reflection, part social commentary, and all the while beautiful are an amazing addition to the Peruvian and Ecuadorian cities he has been so fortunate to have visited. Here are some of the works he has shared with me over the past year or so. Peace.

My newest book is out now: Hall Of Fame - New York City (On the Run books)

The birthplace of the style writing school of graffiti is New York City. This is the place where young writers first began to transform letters from simple tags on a wall to elaborate masterpieces of colorful and camoflauged letters embellished with characters that depicted friends and heroes alike. By the 1980s the artwork was quickly destroyed by authorities and the artists seeking to preserve some of their works took hold of schoolyards around the city to paint grander works. It was a no-nonsense approach to save their art form and spread their fame to the local kids. The most famous of these schoolyards is located in East Harlem on 106th street and Park Avenue and it became known as the Hall of Fame. At first the Hall of Fame was established to bring together the best artists in the city and have them paint in the same schoolyard supplanting the number 5 train as the showcase place for the best graffiti art in New York. Over the years as the word spread artists from around the city would sneak in and leave their work at night in this unsanctioned museum. From Skeme, Dez, and Daze in the early 1980s to Vulcan, Jon One, and Dome in the late 1980s to Part, Ezo, and TDS rejuvenating the schoolyard with style in the 1990s to TC5 (West, Dash, Psycho, Wane, Cope2, etc.), TDS (Flite, Part, Noc167, Serve, T-Kid170), TATS (Bio, BG183, Nicer, How, Nosm, Sen2) crews tight productions in the 2000s to the writers that travel to New York to paint there today this book documents the exciting art work that was created in a small obscure school in Harlem that became known as the legendary Hall of Fame. Join me on this artistic retrospective of the famous and important New York landmark.

Buy it now before they are all gone.

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present A Beautiful Madness, the first solo exhibition in the USA by JonOne. Though raised in New York, JonOne has lived in Paris since the mid 1980’s where he has established himself as an artist, building a career that has spanned over 20 years.

From his early days as a youth, tagging the streets of Harlem, JonOne has always emphasized a painterly approach, bringing brushes instead of spray cans to tag subway trains. Drawing from the energy and freedom of painting in an urban landscape, he translates his roots as a graffiti artist into paintings that are a completely unique form of abstract expressionism. Akin to Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, JonOne’s pieces exhibit an enormous sense of movement and color. His compositions combine freestyle, precise strokes, repetition and texture for a uniquely balanced yet dynamic visual experience.

The transformation of 14th street and the Chelsea neighborhood as a result of the creation of the Highline park is truly amazing. The dead train tracks turned park has brought with it hotels, condos, fancy shops, tourists, and even some new art. The design of the park itself is quite beautiful and a small oasis amongst this large city but on a recent trip I took in more than just the park but also the surrounding graffiti some which has survived many years and the new clean up of the area. Here are a few images from my walk.

Yesterday Bruz, Sin, Skinz, Noc167, and I completed a rooftop on the 7 line in Queens that is inspired by the oil spills that big oil companies have been responsible for. We decided to address this issue on this wall since it it so visible and we hope that people get the message. The continued pollution of our oceans and our lands at the hands of these corporations that reap billions in profits annually is reprehensible and criminal.

This month there was an oil spill in Nigeria thanks to Exxon Mobil (again).
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/us-oil-major-detects-oil-spill-off-nigeria-17010841

It’s been 2 years since the BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the devastation is still evident in the death of sea life. http://news.mongabay.com/2012/0424-hance_deepwater_mutations.html

Today, our government is pushing for Arctic drilling which could have a devastating effect to that regions wildlife and people. To date, the technology does not exist to clean up a potential oil spill and the cleanup itself is damaging to the planet. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090316101430.htm

Ripo has been traveling around the world creating amazing works in the public for some years now (check Terror’s post). His murals are amazing and his gallery work is on another level as well. He is a sophisticated letter man. He recently opened his latest solo show:

“Signs, Fines, & Cheap Wines”
The installation includes 15 new works on paper and 10 new assemblage paintings as well as
over 130 plaster tiles based on the street tiles found throughout Barcelona.
The show will be on view through Sept. 1st, 2012 at

White Walls Gallery

835 Larkin St, San Francisco, CA

Below are a few of the works from the show. You can see more at:

Williamsburg, Brooklyn today is fully gentrified and totally changed from the neighborhood that I once called home. Growing up as a kid in Williamsburg and Bushwick (two neighborhoods in Brooklyn) was colorful for many reasons - the people, the sounds, and of course the walls. There was lots of crime and lots of tags and other art on the walls everywhere, it made quite an impression on me so much that I ended up wanting to do the same. In the 1980s ATOM aka ATOMIC LOC was the undisputed king of the walls with pieces while OE3 had the gates and everything else saturated with his tags and throw ups. Bushwick was different and was where you saw writers from the WR and BSK crews up. Anyway, I thought I would share some pictures of those days - the 80s and early 90s.

Entes and Pesimo are two writers from Lima, Peru whose work I particularly enjoy seeing. They have been traveling a bit lately and getting more recognition for their style and work ethic. About a year or so ago I painted with Pesimo in my hood on the wall that is now causing such uproar. It was a much tamer theme but fierce nonetheless. Below is a recent video of some art they created in Argentina.

Last week I got together with Noxer and Tres to paint a wall uptown in Inwood that I paint occasionally with friends. Every year or so however I decided to turn it into more of a protest wall and collaborate with friends to share a message that I feel is pertinent and that the community should think about. In the past they have mostly been focused on the wars that the US has been involved in but this time I wanted to point out that the war isn’t always abroad but its also actually here.

Today I received a call from the business where this is painted telling me that the police showed up and asked them to please have the painting removed. Go figure. Let’s see what happens tomorrow when I approach the local precinct for an explanation and a reversal of opinion.

And here I am thinking I would add some more names to the top (FBI, CIA, etc.)

Friends,

As you all now know our friend and legendary writer Stayhigh 149 passed away a few days ago. His family is asking for his friends to help them with the funeral costs. The total costs are $10,000 and they have $6,000. I just spoke to the funeral home, Unity Chapel in Harlem, where SH149/Wayne Roberts will be viewed on Monday and they can take credit card payments tomorrow as of 9am. All money should go directly to them in order to make up the remaining funds that his sister Pauline needs to pay for the funeral. It’s easier for the family to do it in this manner.

Please speak to Ms. Jackson at the funeral home tomorrow if you are able to make a payment with credit card to help out.
The info again is:
Unity Chapel
212-666-8300

The viewing is on Monday from 3-8pm.
Address is:
Unity Chapel
2352 8th avenue bet 126/127
Harlem, NY

thanks again
