Infinite Variety

In case you missed it, the American Folk Art Museum recently presented a brilliant exhibition of 650 red and white quilts at the Park Avenue Armory. Spanning over three centuries, this display was graphically overwhelmingly and worth seeking out. If you’re interested there’s a flickr pool where you can see a bunch of peoples’ blurry photos or you can wait to get the catalog.

Current Events

I went to Cairo last year to meet with the good people of the Articulate Baboon gallery. I had planned to do an installation there this year, and hope it can still happen. I haven’t heard from them since Egypt turned off the internet and can only hope everyone’s safe and they can reestablish some communication soon.
For the past three days I’ve been glued to Al Jazeera live feed. It’s amazing seeing this footage of people in the streets and inspiring to think that after 40 years of autocratic rule, a leaderless populous can stand up to power and demand change. I definitely don’t pretend to know whether this will lead to a better government or destabilization of the middle east - I don’t think anyone knows this. The only thing that seems clear to me is that even if you turn off twitter, the world is still paying attention.

This series of prints and wallpapers is an interpretation of the LIFE Science Library - 25 books that were published between 1964 and 1967 on topics such as ‘Energy’ ,‘Matter’, and ‘The Mind’. The work is a recognition of the art of knowledge as well as the poetry of things we do not and can not know. It’s also a tribute to my parents who are biologists and my grandfather - an engineer who left me the books.

Radical Spirit

Artist-friend James Case-Leal has embarked on an ambitious installation inside a Brooklyn church involving video, a pirate television station, and a massive sculpture.

The exhibition will be open to the public September 28 - October 2. The broadcast signal will be receivable by the local public on their television sets on analog channel 17 during these times. A performance and opening reception will be tomorrow Tuesday, September 28 from 6 to 9pm.

Skateistan is Afghanistan’s - and the world’s - first co-educational skateboarding school. The school engages growing numbers of urban and internally-displaced youth in Afghanistan from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds through skateboarding, and provides them with new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction, education, and personal empowerment enabling them to lead their communities toward social change and development.

I designed a deck for their charity. The winner of the ebay auction gets this yellow board with bugs on it, but more importantly get to help out kids in Afghanistan with your charity e-dollars.

Both in their art and their attendant values these artists work tirelessly to sustain cultural entities. They blanket space with meaning and convert square footage into bold proclamations. The music world reaps the rewards of Sonnenzimmer’s subtle, painterly gig posters while the apparel industry appropriate’s Mike Perry’s electric zine hallucinations into backpacks and Nike dunks. Both Dan Funderburgh and Seripop explore the limits of spatial adornment, Dan through the design of delicately intricate wallpaper that balances Moorish mosaic with American op art, and Seripop via enormous street poster collages, a medium they have evolved from their monstrous rock posters and describe as “the ‘skin’ of a city, growing and shedding organically.”

Not long ago the good people at gravis sent me some samples of a luggage collection that I contributed to. The lining pattern is based upon passports and passport stamps. After some recent voyaging I’m happy to report the bag held up well overseas where I grabbed this sweet looking visa stamp. More on this soon.

Neverend Clocks

I made a cuckoo clock you can buy. And by ‘made’ I mean I drew it up. The good people at Furni in Montreal actually did the making and it’s much better for that fact. This is the first in a series of clocks curated by the unstoppable B.Solomon of Kitsune Noir . Thank you, Bobby ! Thank you, Mike ! completely worth the wait.

Some new images of an opening I did at the Sigerson Morrison store on the upper east side. The installation is matte vinyl paper was printed by FlavorPaper‘s amazing new printer/cutter. The shoe is still a prototype, more on that later. The letterpress doily, Obeisance to Small Hazards was printed at The Arm and is an edition of 75.

My friend Mike was kind enough to gift me with a stamp he had made after I advised him on the font choice [ egyptienne bold ] . This professional Trodat self-inking “meh” stamp is really useful for labeling things about which I feel indifferent. Here I’ve applied it to some half-baked sketches for a letterpress print I’m working on. Thanks Mike !

Just in time for all your holiday religious / art / commerce related activities - two new small prints are available for you and yours. Tiny Showcase is selling a two color foil print edition of 500 called Reliquary One ( dead medium, hand of glory, magic bone ) 19” x 12.5”. A portion of the sales go to Amnesty International.

OR if that’s too shiny - a new operation called Working Proof is offering a signed letterpress edition of 75 - 11"x14”. Optimists Club printed right here in Brooklyn at The Arm letterpress studio. A portion of the proceeds from this print will go to Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group for cyclists and public transit.
