How come no assholes come to destroy that place, is it situated deep in a wood?
it is in a verry small village, in a park protected with barb wire so it's difficult to get in...
and I like the tunnel picture!

Bravo, keep it up!
You seem to have too many catles there, here in Estonia they would have been protected with fences too and made to earn money in some way :).

abandond dog pound, we found bullet shells inside
Finally made it there. The abandoned subway station of Kymlinge in Stockholm, Sweden.
The interior: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1335/1247606296_eec579fce3.jpg
The station was built on an existing line, but was not completed due to the local authorities' wishes. Now it simply is. Trains ride through it all the time and at nighttime the lights are on. That's propably why the locals have called it a ghost station, well, it really is freaky.
When we were on our way there, we had to ride through the station with the subway and noted everything was lit up.
So we went there through a forest and as we got near it we saw, well, there were no lights anymore.
The only light was at the end of the station, over an emergency exit.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1071/1221527195_9b033e6b51.jpg
I was standing with the camera under the station's platform. The stairs on the right take you on the platform.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1334/1221527215_75c041387b.jpg
Yes, it was dark.
At first I thought there was just gravel on the ground, but it was actually metal powder...
Then, one moment we decided to go on the platform. You know, to get to the station you have to climb a fence, run a bit into a tunnel with a third rail, be sure there are no trains coming in any way(regularly every 6 minutes, but sometimes empty ones too, it is near the end station and it was evening) and well, we were kinda nervous after doing it. So yes, we walked to the platform, started to set up our tripods and blam - all the lights were on.
Were we neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeervous after that???
We ran under the platform again, waited there for ten minutes. Then, blam, the lights go out.
Blam, the lights go on again after a few seconds.
Another ten minutes under the platform. Nothing happened, so we waited for two trains to pass and took some pics on the platform. And even went a bit further into the tunnel.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1418/1221527125_18b11b5b06.jpg
A view under the platform too.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1185/1221527173_627a1976ec.jpg
It was surprisingly clean of paintings, though it was relatively easy to get in. Propably the legends still live.
And I went back to that old train tunnel again.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1201/1221081249_3a19439161.jpg
And discovered another one.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1192/1247606348_4aec598296.jpg
Didn't go further, had no flashlight and there are many heroin guys in the neighbourhood...
A view of an industry building in Berlin, a tagger attached to it:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1175/1117788085_981997919e.jpg
And well, an abandonment in Paris:).
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1428/1070542903_3c03567511.jpg
Happened to be there when the last train had left and noone was moving around...
All for now.
Bigger oneshere. (www.flickr.com/photos/pekseem)
MZR I am completly amazed I dont think theyre are that many abandoned buildings in my whole state plus all those ones in Belgium are so cool looking! The only time I went flicking abandoned buildings I got guns pointed at my face and screamed at :(

In case anyone wanted to know why you get that weird feeling walking around abandoned buildings, because Jinn (demons) live in abandoned places.
Ko SprueOne
10-28-2007, 02:01 AM
not demons
just the absence of other people in an otherwise familiar shelter
however, the belief in demons and the theories can make very interesting stories

i wish there were more abandoned buildings around here
real estate is crazy, the land is too expensive to just sit vacant
most times it seems like the plans are already drawn up for a new building before the old one is gone

Some of the many places I have been. I love abandoned places. One of my favorite things to do in the world is just sit down and drink a bottle with someone at places like this. /nohobo.
Some small town in the middle of Iowa.

i know that you serious explorer types are pretty tight lipped about the places you go to and where they are
im always curious though, how do you even go about finding some of these abandonned and out of the way areas?
id be curious to see if there are such places around my way, preferably something out in the middle of nowhere that is either not known by others or not cared for by the city
but i never get it. ive explored numerous areas around my ways and ive never really come across anything majorily abandonned, the best is a little shitty house, and quite frankly i wouldnt wanna risk any kind of thing on entering something so worthless
do you guys look up your towns history? do you know people who know people? or is it just dumb luck. how would i go about finding things like these around here?

I live in detroit an a majority of the places that are abandoned
are really well-known by writers...we have about 6 or so factories
that were abandon...if you walk around detroit for 30mins you
are bound to find at least 10 abandon places...to find them just
go lokking around or search it up on google look for places that
were condemned or some shit...cause i think in the nothern
part of michigan we have an abandon insane assylum.
if you are worried about something bring like 5 people and a
bat or something.
oh yea we have this building that still has a company running in
it but the other half of it is completely empty and not in use.

i think my city is different though as things are being torn down sometimes literally over night for new buildings, and i think vacant space is a very prized thing around here, so not a lot of stuff is just left out to take up space

yeah here are some more links on urban exploration
theres alot to know about asbestos and other bad chemicals that can be floating around in abandoned buildings
and a rainy season could be a good thing with helping ground alot of possibly hazardous airborne particles
going exploring when its damp can be one of the safest times to explore
finding a quality mask can be helpful too
some links

alot of gems there ^
if you join the uer.ca forums there is tons of info and tips on exploring definetally worth joining if you looking to do some exploring

10 football fields long/1,000 yards

and as for how everyone finds these places. i've always just fallen upon, or heard from a friend of a friend of a friend, etc.
i went to an abandoned hotel outside of orlando a couple months ago and explored. it was really wierd, because some of the rooms still had phonebooks and stuff in it. almost all still had beds that we're made up, and it looked to have been abandoned for 5+ years.
if i go back anytime soon, i'll remember to bring my digi.

none of the pics are mine, but its near where i used to spend my summers as a little kid.
i recently gained access to some tunnels/catacombs from the time of the seven years war/french and indian war (built around the 1760's), that used to link former forts, churches, the masonic temple and the Lt. Governor's house in my city.
i'll get some pictures on my next trip down.

The Rhode Island School for the Feeble Minded later known as The Ladd School. Exeter, RI
Photos c/o opacity.us
History c/o dreadcentral.com
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss148/allfreetime3/0000005280.jpg
In 1907 the State of Rhode Island purchased a 475-acre farm with visions of opening up a special school. Named the Rhode Island School for the Feeble Minded, it opened its doors with only eight patients two years later. By 1915 the population had grown to 123 patients with a waiting list of more than 300, hinting at problems that were to come. By 1923 there were more than 365 inmates, and the school was grossly overcrowded. In addition, funds were inadequate to allow for simple necessities such as dental care, a morgue, or recreational facilities. The school was lambasted in the Providence Journal for being a firetrap and having no functioning hospital or chapel. It was also revealed that, while a cursory physical exam was performed on admittance, there were no psychological exams given; and most of the care the patients received was simply custodial in nature. They were cleaned and fed but little else.
New buildings were added, but they failed to keep up with the ever-increasing number of patients being admitted. By 1950 there were nearly 900 patients crammed together in the poor living conditions. Added to overpopulation, it was later revealed, was the fact that there was only one real doctor working at the Ladd School, and that was Dr. Joseph H. Ladd himself. The other staff members possessed little or no medical training.
Dr. Ladd, despondent over the conditions that were swallowing his institution, retired, washing his hands of the situation; and in 1956 Dr. John G. Smith took over control of the school. It would only be two years into his reign that the foundation of the school began to crumble. A probe was launched, investigating allegations of widespread abuse and neglect at the school, and the results were horrifying. Patients slept on cots packed head to foot in rows with less than nine inches between them. Those who were unruly were routinely beaten, and many of the rooms had neither toilets nor sinks. Rats infested the living and dining areas, and patients' medical conditions were not being addressed.
One female inmate turned up pregnant twice, either by other mentally handicapped inmates or by hospital staff. A boy of only nine years old was found stuffed in a laundry sack and left in a shower stall where he asphyxiated, and an elderly inmate was killed when another patient pushed him down a flight of stairs. Patients were overdosed and died because their medication was either improperly prescribed or given incompetently by a person with no medical training. Skin disease and boils were prevalent among the inmates, and many of them showed so many signs of neglect that they lay at death's door. Doctors who saw released patients were astounded and enraged at the lack of dignity afforded the patients of what was now called The Ladd School. One inspector commented on finding bloody sponges and towels on the dentistry room floor and that he could find no means of sterilization save for a bar of soap he picked up from under a chair.
In 1983 the State of Rhode Island, along with the administrators of The Ladd School, was brought up on a class-action lawsuit, resulting in the termination of Smith. A new administrator, Dr. George W. Gunther, took office and did his best to systematically set things right. It was a project close to his heart as his own daughter was a patient at The Ladd School, and he wanted to make sure she was taken care of. He began by removing patients, placing them in better facilities, and then demolishing the rundown buildings in which they were living. It was, however, too little, too late. In 1986 the Governor of Rhode Island announced that the facility was to be closed. It took a few years to move out all the inmates, but finally, in March of 1993 the last five inmates were lead to a van and transferred.

Are you talking about the hospitals? Note these are only a few of the abandon hospitals in New England and I plan on posting more. As for as the ones already posted Norwich State Hospital, THe Ladd School and The Pines Hotel are still the same. The others, Worcester and Northampton have been demolished or renovated. But keep in mind most of these places have round the clock security.

Danvers State Hospital. Danvers, MA. Stolen.
Photos c/o opacity.us
Decription c/o opacity.us
Construction began in 1874, and the 70,000 square foot Kirkbride building was opened four years later. It's Gothic peaks and spires looming over the solid red brick are an incredible sight of beauty and a symbol of grandeur and fortitude, but at the cost of over $1 million to build, local residents resented the beautiful castle on the hill being given to the "insane" while they were living meagerly. Danvers was a model for humane treatment at the time, with no restraint policies invoked and the hospital instituted a pathology laboratory that was held in very high regard in the medical field.
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss148/allfreetime3/danvers_isometric_1887.jpg
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss148/allfreetime3/female_wing_admin_dsh_pc_1919.jpg
The hospital soon filled with such varied types of patients that it soon became a problem; geriatrics, the mentally disabled, alcoholics, drug addicts, the criminally insane and all other people with varied degrees of mental illness were mixing together under one roof. By the 1950's Danvers State was reported to be just as bad as Byberry, using various shock therapies, lobotomies, and other methods to keep the overcrowded hospital under control. The original Kirkbride building had a recommended maximum capacity of 600 patients, and although some additions had been constructed, the hospital housed around 2,400 patients at one point!
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss148/allfreetime3/danvers_state_hospital_view_from_ea.jpg
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss148/allfreetime3/danvers_kirkbride_floorplan.jpg
Upon the steady decline of patients that most nearby psychiatric facilities were experiencing, the Kirkbride building was abandoned in the early 1970's; the remaining patients were moved to the Bonner Medical Building across the lawn. Danvers State Hospital officially closed it's doors in the summer of 1992 in response to the many allegations of overcrowding, abuse and neglect in court. The movie "Session 9" was filmed on location in 2001, and brought a lot of attention to the old hospital. Security has since been increased to 24 hour patrols, and the boarding of all windows. A fire was started inside in 2004, forcing firemen to enter the dangerous building to prevent the whole Kirkbride from being engulfed in flames. Since then, the place has been on total lockdown - constant patrols 24/7 with mandatory checkpoints, and the arrest of anyone caught anywhere on the grounds (they are publishing the arrests in newspapers to get their point across). An article about trespassing on the grounds states that over 120 people have been arrested since 2000!

Avalon Bay now owns the property, and redevelopment plans are in full swing to demolish all but 1/3 of the Kirkbride building and gut the rest for apartments. The sale of the property has been an ongoing battle for years now, the preservation society had filed a lawsuit in attempt to block the sale of the hospital, but it was ruled otherwise by Salem Superior Court.
2007 Update
The hospital has been fully converted to Avalon Bay Danvers, a condominium complex.

Riverside Hospital (North Brother Island) BRONX, NY
http://www.opacity.us/images/db/100/0000006031.jpg
"The Brothers," as the islands are often called, are located in the East River, between Queens and the Bronx, NYC. They were claimed in 1614 and dubbed "duo De Gesellen" (or "The Companions"), and were left unoccupied for quite some time due to the strong and dangerous currents surrounding them. South Brother Island is the smaller of the two, and was only home to a private summer home for a few years until it burned down in 1909; it was purchased by Hampton Scows for $10.00 in 1979 and subsequently sold to the City of New York in 2007 (for around $2 million) to be preserved as a wildlife sanctuary. North Brother was purchased by the town of Morrisania (located in the Bronx) in 1871, and was home to a tuberculosis hospital built by the Sisters of Charity. The hospital was closed when New York City acquired the island in 1885 to build a new hospital for the treatment of infectious diseases. The diseases that were treated here varied as new germs invaded the city - they included smallpox, typhoid, tuberculosis, measles, diphtheria, scarlet fever, and polio. Many patients from the Renwick Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island were relocated to North Brother once the new facility was built. A ferry located at 132nd Street in the Bronx transported staff, patients, and supplies to the island, yet it remained very isolated - there were no telephone or telegraph lines installed until as late as 1894. There were also dangers with transporting stricken patients in the winter, and much criticism was voiced after a six month old baby infected with measles perished en route to the island. During the turn of the century, overcrowding was a major issue when an outbreak occurred; everyday medical instruments were in short supply and were not cleaned or sterilized properly between the frequent uses. Tents were used when no more beds could fit in the pavilions; the cloth enclosures were precariously heated with wood burning stoves during the harsh New York winters, and a few eventually wound up in flames. The hospital had about 1,200 people in quarantine during a 1892 typhus outbreak.
http://www.opacity.us/images/db/100/resource/1904_general_slocum_disaster.jpg
Tragedy struck off the shores of the island on June 15, 1904, when the passenger ship General Slocum caught fire. Unmaintained fire hoses disintegrated in people's hands when they tried to use them, and the lifeboats were either tied down or painted onto the deck. The life preservers were made of a cheap granulated cork that were brought up to meet minimum weight requirements by placing iron bars inside, and crumbled away through holes in the tattered fabric. The captain continued his course into the wind instead of running the ship aground (his reasons being to avoid spreading the fire to the hospital buildings and oil tank), which fanned the flames even higher. Many passengers who jumped were taken to the bottom of the river due to the heavy garments worn at the time, and those who stayed aboard were consumed by flames or mangled by the still-turning paddle. The Slocum was eventually beached at North Brother, where the living had been pulled from the water by firemen and the staff at Riverside, and the dead were lined up along the shoreline. An estimated 1,021 people perished, with only 321 survivors.
The most infamous patient that resided at Riverside might be Mary Mallon, also known as "Typhoid Mary." Mary was a carrier of typhoid, which means she had the disease but there were no symptoms or side effects, yet she could pass it to others. She worked as a cook at various places in Manhattan and Long Island between 1900 and 1907, where she transmitted the infection to a number of people. As they got sick or died she would find employment elsewhere, and she was soon questioned by health officials. Her response was that she did not believe she had the disease, and adamantly refused to cooperate. In 1907 Mary was taken into custody by police officers, and The Health Department gave her an ultimatum - either have her gall bladder removed (where typhoid carrier germs lived), or be exiled to North Brother Island. She refused the surgical operation, which was risky and unpredictable at the time, and was placed at the hospital for three years. Mallon resided in a bungalow, away from the main hospital buildings, and lived alone except for a dog as a companion.
http://www.opacity.us/images/db/100/resource/mary_mallon_cottage.jpg
After a lengthy court battle, where Mary described her life akin to a prisoner's, she was released from the hospital in 1910. She immediately returned to work as a cook under the pseudonym of "Mrs. Brown" at Sloane Maternity Hospital. An outbreak of typhoid that consisted of 25 separate cases was eventually traced back to the cook, and officials identified her as Mary Mallon. She was sent back to North Brother in 1915 to live the rest of her life there. She began working at the hospital in 1918, becoming a nurse and finally a laboratory assistant. Mary suffered a stroke in 1933, and remained bedridden at Riverside until she died on November 11, 1938. She had infected a total of 47 people, 3 of whom had died from the disease.
In 1943 a large tuberculosis pavilion was constructed on the island, but was never used for that purpose (supposedly due to the lack of staff personnel required to operate it). The passing of the GI Bill resulted in the shortage of housing for the city's colleges, and the building was used as a dormitory while the island was leased to the state. College students were transported to and from the island via the E 134th Street Ferry Terminal, by ferry boats Mott Haven and Greenwich Village.
These same ferries were also used for adolescents being treated for drug abuse when the city took control of the island once again in 1952 and planned its final use as a rehab center for serious cases of addiction. The idea was to get adolescents far away from the overcrowded jails and hospitals filled with time-hardened criminals, with a maximum stay of six months. The TB pavilion was converted to treat 100 boys and 50 girls, placed there by their parents or the court system. New admissions were bathed and searched for drugs, then placed in observation wards as they went through withdrawal "Cold Turkey." If the symptoms were too severe, they were tapered off the drug. The program turned out to be rife with corruption by the 1960s, and Riverside Hospital closed in 1963, leaving the entire island abandoned. It is currently off-limits to the public and patrolled often due to the proximity of a nearby prison complex on Rikers Island, as well as joining the purpose of its brethren as a bird sanctuary.
THIS IS THE SAME FAMILY THAT BUILT THE HOUSE I JUST POSTED!!

to be honest Chernobyl would have been better if there wasn't any graff there in my opinion.
sadly some douchebags from belorussia did their "street art" thing there and ruined it.
some places graff doesn't belong

It's good fun. but fuck it was cold that day. it's along day from kyiv about 14 hours includign eating lunch in the cafeteria at the power plant!
you go through three military chackpoints in and out and you have to have your passport with you etc.
