yep radiation levels were higher than normal (about 50 times higher standing next to the sarcophagus of the exploded reactor) but since you're only there for a few hours they go up then they go down.

Saw this place from the highway. Given my natural curiosity of abandon places I turned around to explore.

Turns out a year earlier the only recorded tornado ever in the area had hit this one house and nothing else. It was a real eerie scene. Furthermore the area is a Zulu tribal reservation and come to find out this house had been owned by one of the only white families in the reservation and had been for 100+ years. I'm not spiritual or anything but it really semed like god had decided these people don;t belong there. Looters had taken anything of value including scrap metal, wires furniture etc.

The first pic is the main driveway. To me it looks like nature had decreed that no one gets in or out of this place. Luckily the looters had created a bypass entrance.

San Francisco, CA – John Law and Jonathan Haeber are a generation apart but they have a common interest. Their exploits have taken them from the top of the Golden Gate Bridge, to the depths of underground nuclear missile bases, to the now-dismantled Neverland Ranch. On January 6th at 8 p.m. the two aficionados of infrastructure and building hacking will talk about their books and present images from a combined 30-year saga of photographing and exploring the off-limits sections of the Bay Area’s built environment.

Law is best-known as a founder of such avant-garde San Francisco institutions as the Cacophony Society and Burning Man. He was a charter initiate into the Suicide Club, and recently published The Space Between (Furnace Press, 2008, ISBN 978-0-9772742-4-1).

Haeber has been visiting restricted and abandoned sites for over a decade. In 2009, his nighttime photos of Neverland Ranch were viewed by millions, gaining new meaning upon the death of Michael Jackson and the dismantlement and liquidation of the theme park. Haeber’s work has appeared in The New Yorker online, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, Der Spiegel, the San Francisco Chronicle, and National Geographic News. His book, Grossinger’s: City of Refuge and Illusion (Furnace Press, 2010, ISBN 978-0-9772742-8-4) tells the story of America’s most iconic Catskills institution – a city unto itself that has remained decaying after the 1986 bankruptcy of the pleasure resort.

I think the trick is to know what time of year the properties are posted for tax sale. I considered it here in Providence since we have a similar and very lax tax sale program. Learned that the hard way.

they have those big square toilets/sinks at my job. (i work at a nursing home) housekeeping uses them to fill and empty mop buckets or dump whatever liquid mess necessary.
