Designer signs deal with MTV Films for 'Getting Up.'

His first video game may have missed its intended holiday-season release date, but fashion impresario Marc Ecko has new reason to be excited about his interactive graffiti opus "Getting Up."

MTV Films announced Thursday (December 8) that it has acquired the feature-film rights to Ecko's game and that Ecko will serve as a producer. No cast, crew or release dates are set yet for what will be MTV Films' first foray into the sometimes-treacherous waters of video-game-based movies.

The film division's slate has included "Jackass: The Movie," "The Longest Yard," "Hustle & Flow" and "Napoleon Dynamite." Now it will face the challenge of trying to succeed with video games where previous companies adapting games from "Street Fighter" to "Doom" have struggled creatively and commercially.

The game tells the story of Trane, an aspiring graffiti artist who learns the notorious street art and slowly gains the political consciousness to use it to fight the oppressive authorities of his city, New Radius. In the game, Trane is voiced by Talib Kweli. Diddy, Adam West and Rosario Dawson are also among the game's deep list of celebrity voice talent (see "P. Diddy Flips Out, RZA Promotes Graffiti In 'Getting' Game").

Earlier this summer Ecko told MTV News that "Getting Up" has been percolating in his mind since the mid-'90s when he wrote the script for a planned graffiti-adventure trilogy. At the time, he said, he was $6 million in debt (see "Designer Marc Ecko Says Graffiti Game Mixes 'Star Wars,' 'Style Wars' ").

The video game version, which is being developed by the Collective, is expected to hit stores in February for PS2, Xbox and PC. It has drawn fire from critics, including New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who see it as the glorification of an illegal activity.

This summer, Ecko already had a defense ready for his critics: "I'm not condoning you go out and ruin property," he said. "That's not what this is about. Any cynic that's going to try to just hate on it for that reason needs to dig just three inches deeper and understand the story, immerse yourself in the story and learn about Trane and where his head is really at. He's just trying to flip the script on the system."

The explotation of this game and any such movie on a big screen version would be a huge impact on the culture of graff. Look at the people that have paved the way for graff. There are people out there now adays that are using graff for money and profits. every where you turn graff is completely immersed in our society. last week alone i went through about 7 magazines all of which had at least ONE graff based ad. Graff is one of the most mistunderstood forms of art present in our society. There will never be a complete understanding of it from the outsiders prospective. To many its business, to some its life, to others its a fucking joke, and to alot of people its a hurtful, vandalistic, expresionistic form of art. i am curious to see what kind of film could be made, i mean look at how many dvd's are out about graff now. But what most people dont know is they already exist. I think the movie will cause a terrible epidemic of graff wanna be's. But with all the graff crackdowns the toys might help in showing that we'll do it no matter what dumb rule is in effect. this doesn't mean the end of the aerosol culture, this just means theres gonna be a lot more toys around. everyone was a toy at one point. we just gotta kick em some history, educate em, let em know what time it is, and that this just isn't some trendy thing. the suckers are going to fall off within a minute while the real ones will stay true.

if this movie is really going to come out. you're gonna have a whole lot of toys nationwide, but they'd probably only be down with it just because of the movie and game. there would be mad toys running around totting tags on their backpacks, wearing hiphop t-shirts trying to look the part, instead of being the part on the under, but it's always been this way. there would always be some fake-ass motherfuckers like that. so fuck em.

and people talk about how the aerosol culture is going to go down the drain along with street racing and what not, with movies like "fast and the furious" and "you got served". well everything in the world pretty much gets whorized by hollywood. And after those movies came out b-boys have been educating folks that equate b-boying to some usher r&b type shit, and the racers that were about it before the movie -- started strippin down their cars and sportin sleepers and dissing body kits and what not.

graffiti isn't a fashion show. quit worrying. just keep shit on the under.

Bomb The system was an OK movie but Wat ever y'all do dont watch The graffiti Artist It ia a Gay ass movie literaly. The two main chrakters which are boys make out for like 5 min. Not kiding

Oh man I was over at a homegirls house and me and another writer were there burnin it down. Then my friend was like what this?...THE GRAFFITI WRITER. She was all "yeah my bf rented it and i haven't watched it yet". I was like????hollywood video knows what's up with graff no fuckin way. We watched that CRAP until the main character gets invited into bed by his bombin partner. I couldn't believe it, I was sick to my stomach litterally. I no homophob, but this was too much. ugggh. Definately a must not have.

Graff movies are never gonna be accepable by everyone, too many people have very diffenrent ways of looking at how graffiti should be or what qualifies to be worthy of film press.

This movie is the best actor played graffiti movie (unless you count basquiat as a writer movie)
It has got a cliché story like Bomb the system, but it's pretty nice to watch....you can really relate to some stuff.
And the trains there are fucken dope! They're done by differrent artists over the world...for example Won..

you can dl the torrent i have full film but its only in german :( no subs as yet as someone (who can be arsed) has to write them. the film looks dope i watched about 20min in german and it seemed cool. alot of the opinions in here make me laugh but open the question in my mind as to what people thought of wildstyle at the time that was a proper film with some real writers in it. do you think heads at the time were down on it for similer reasons i see on this thread?an interesting thought which hadnt until now crossed my mind as i love that film.
