Devil's Playground. It's about Amish kids getting loose. When they are teenagers, Amish people go out into the real world to decide whether or not they want to be Amish. They can leave the Amish with no shame if they want to. It's crazy though, some of the kids get hooked on smack, other ones get arrested, it's truly a whole new world.

This astonishingly intimate documentary follows five homeless children in Romania, where the collapse of communism has led to a life on the street for 20,000 children. From a 16-year-old girl who runs her gang with a mixture of brutality and compassion, to a small, intelligent, and remarkably articulate 12-year-old boy, these children seem at first feral and frightening--yet over the course of the movie their loneliness, desperation, and glimpses of hope will transform how you perceive them. Make no mistake: this is difficult watching. As Children Underground explores the meager state resources to support these children and follows some of the children back to their difficult families, the scope of the problem becomes larger and more irresolvable. But this documentary offers an unblinking and deeply compassionate insight into the extremes of human existence; you will not forget it easily. --Bret Fetzer
Product Description
Easily one of the most astonishing and engaging cinematic works of the past decade, CHILDREN UNDERGROUND is a profoundly intimate and heart-wrenching drama -- an Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary Feature in 2001, and winner at nearly every major

This documentary is about Holland (mostly Amsterdam...) and how they basically do things differently than the U.S...... They compare their system of government, drug laws, prostitution, etc. Great footage. I believe it's about 12 years old or so.......Might be kinda hard to find, but definitely worth the look. Maybe Netflix???????

i saw that. they were getting worked up and acting like immature post-college kids. coughing and laughing and breathing hard when they couldn't refute a point. that one dude whose face was greasy as hell was all pissed, losing his composure and acted like he wanted to punch his debating opponents.
in the meanwhile his opponents were calm, complacent, and simply provided the facts. they obviously held the moral highground.

when one begins to feel moral superiority, what ensues is a egocentric way of social interactions. this is to say that now my ideas are better, more sound and or logical than yours. therefore my idea should live on in perpetuity. where will this lead? many times into a dead end. delusion of grandeur. however looking back in history we find many cases of extreme moral superiority which were, are disastrous. look at the great empires. why did they conquer? they held socio centric world views. their society was better than the next, therefore they felt entitled to the booty.
should i continue? or do you get my drift?

"lost boys of sudan" --it's about two teenage refugees from sudan, who come to america and try to adapt to our culture. it's slow, might be boring for some, but if you look at the overall affect this country has on them (in an all around way), than it's pretty impressive. i don't want to ruin anything, but it shows how one adapts to a sort of suburban christian lifestyle, and the other deals with poverty and despair.
someone said "dark days" up above. i'll agree --that fucking movie is on point. get the dvd and watch the bonus features. how that movie was made was more inspiring than anything i've seen in the documentary world.

Also The Tunnel by Margaret Morton. The Mole People is by Jennifer Toth (I think) but had some controversy around it that she didn't go as far beneath the surface as she makes it seem. And since books were mentioned and the thread title doesn't mention a form of media, I liked a book called Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue, it's also a photodocumentary like The Tunnel but about inner city coke/crack use.
