I've been thinking about making this thread for a while and finally decided that tonight was the night. I fucking love reggae. I don't know if it's because I smoke a lot of weed or what, but something about reggae just makes me want to listen to it as much as possible. So if anyone else appreciate jamaicas second greatest export(the first being Red Stripe) or just wants to talk about good reggae bands; here's the palce to do it.
So to start things off, here's a list of some reggae I've been listening to lately:
-Groundation
-John Brown's Body
-10 ft. Ganja Plant
-Gomba Jahbari
-King Tubby
-Culture
-Third World
-Burning Spear
-Willie Williams
-Junior Kelly
-Bob Marley and The Wailers
-Damian, Stephan, Ky-Mani, and Ziggy Marley
-Augustus Pablo
-Eek-A-Mouse
-Buju Banton

I read a bunch of stuff about LSP and his black arc recording studio.....the whol place was covered in writting that Lee would scribble. Every R that was written anywhere he would put an X through because he thought it stood for Rome. A bunch of like cult rastafarians would hang around his place and beg him for money all the time, so Lee would purposely act as crazy as possible so they would leave him alone. For a while he was driving around town with dirt and flowers in his car just so people would think he was crazy.....there's more

some how BOB has gone through this, hes what most people who have never heard reggie b4 have heard of, thus reggie fans look down on you if you say i like BOB; but really its only if the only album you own is legend, where you're some what tool status. BOB made SOOOOO much music that still kills the culture music of today. Its too bad there is a decline in instrumentation in the reggie world now. cause the money nah run for bands or theres a conflict of interest most reggae artists ar solo acts, one dude voice, one dude produce the rhythms, shits less then it could be in terms of the artistry. To make money you have to ALWAYS make next tunes and TOUR, stage shows are where the money is.

you cant tougher then BOB. the man get rated number one for iver. However there are some super strong next singers and djs to hold the vibe.

I been listening to DJ Derek - Sweet Memory Sounds

It is loads of old ska and reggae it is amazing. The best thing is is that he is an old age pensioner in Bristol who collected records in the 50s and with the large influx of jamacians coming in into Bristol, he started spinning tunes at clubs as he had a sweet record collection and he still does it now into his 70s

super cool dude

It is with great sadness that we at West Indian Times have to report that Michael 'Mikey Dread' Campbell who was always 'The Dread At The Control' has passed away. Mikey passed away at approximately 6:50pm Eastern Standard Time on Saturday, March 15th, 2008. He was surrounded by his family in the home of his sister in Connecticut at the time of his passing. We had reported in October 2007 that Mikey had been diagnosed with a brain tumor and that he was fighting with all his might to recover from his illness. Mikey constantly remained upbeat and hopeful for a full recovery so that he could continue doing what he loved; spreading Jah music to the world. Mikey's family including his children; 2 sons from Jamaica, a daughter who lives in Houston, TX, a son who lives in Canada, a daughter who lives in Belize, and his 4 month old son Zylen Jahlight had been close by in the last few months as he fought to stay with them.

We will keep you updated as service arrangements are made.

West Indian Times sends our deep condolence to the family and friends of Mikey Dread. His passing is a great loss to the Universe. He will be greatly missed. Mikey, may your soul rest in eternal peace.

Tune in to hear our musical tribute to Mikey on Vibes 24/7: Listen To Vibes 24/7 Live or http://www.westindiantimes.net/vibes247.htm

Producer Joe Gibbs dead at 65
published: Tuesday | February 26, 2008

Record producer Joel 'Joe Gibbs' Gibson, whose partnership with singer Dennis Brown yielded a string of hit songs during the 1970s, died last Thursday at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Gibbs' son, Rocky, told The Gleaner that his father died shortly after suffering a heart attack. He was 65 years old.

The Montego Bay-born Gibbs began producing on his Amalgamated label in the 1960s. His first major hit was singer Roy Shirley's Hold Them, but it was in the next decade that Gibbs really hit his stride.

Brown, a former prodigy, cut a series of songs for Gibbs that were rarely off the charts. These included Money In My Pockets, Should I, Stay at Home, Love Has Found Its Way and How Could I Live.

Other productions

Gibbs also produced Culture's massive Two Sevens Clash, George Nooks' Tribal War and Althea and Donna's Uptown Top Ranking which made the British pop charts in 1977. His last major hit was singer J.C. Lodge's Someone Loves You Honey, a song originally done by African-American country singer Charlie Pride.

Bass player Lloyd Parkes was a senior member of Gibbs' house band, The Professionals. He said while Gibbs was an astute businessman, he was not the great producer many believed.

"I would call him an executive producer, most of the production was done by Errol Thompson and the musicians," Parkes said.

Thompson was the engineer at Gibbs' Retirement Road studio. He died in 2004.

Gibbs is survived by 11 children.

Lloyd Parkes' Joe Gibbs Top 10

(1) Stay at Home - Dennis Brown

(2) Love Has Found Its Way - Dennis Brown

(3) Jah Jah (See Dem a Come) - Culture

(4) Should I - Dennis Brown

(5) Uptown Top Ranking - Althea and Donna

(6) Visions - Dennis Brown

(7) Foul Play - Dennis Brown

(8 ) Fortyleg - Prince Mohammed

(9) How Could I Leave - Dennis Brown

(10) Someone Loves You Honey - J.C. Lodge

Remembering Joe Gibbs

• Drummer Sly Dunbar, bassist Lloyd Parkes, keyboardist Franklyn 'Bubbler' Waul, guitarist Winston 'Bo Pee' Bowen and saxophonist Dean Fraser were all members of The Professionals, the house band at Joe Gibbs' studio.
• Although he recorded several hits for producer Clement Dodd and Winston 'Niney' Holness, Dennis Brown's most fruitful period as a singer was with Joe Gibbs.
• Visions and Words of Wisdom, produced by Gibbs, are considered Dennis Brown's best albums.
• Gibbs also produced Love Has Found Its Way, Brown's album for A&M Records.

Mick Hucknall of Simply Red covered Stay at Home for Sly and Robbie's Grammy-winning Friends album.

RIP Joe Gibbs
