I was just coming on here to start this post but Zed beat me to it. IZ was a very good friend to me and I'm glad i got to speand last weekend with him in NY. He is going to be truely missed by many many people across the globe. Every person he came in contact with he touched their lives. He was the undisputed king of all kings on the new york city subways and he was one of the coolest guys you'd ever meet!!!

I really miss you Mike... I wish we had years more to spend together but I will treasure the time we did have!!!! I hope you are out on a mission bombing those trains in the sky, they better be crushed by the time I get there!!!! :king: :king2:

One of my all time favourite and most inspirational New York pioneers... even though we never met, his work left a permanent impression on my self and writers the world over.

Anyone that was a firsthand friend/partner of Iz, can you please PM me, as i'm putting together a tribute to the legacy of Iz The Wiz for Clouded Thoughts Magazine, and it would be great to have some original photos of his works to use.

RIP IZ!!!!!!!!!
from bombersblog:

Dear Friends,

I have just learned that our esteemed colleague, Michael Martin has left this life for one of comfort and serenity.

Please keep him in our hearts and perhaps prayers when appropriate. Mike was a kind and thoughtful man, who has struggled most of his life, yet bestowed upon us memories of his boundless creative energies and humor.

Michael Martin was true royalty, reigning creative over our NYC landscape like no other warrior.

Michael Martin November 30, 1958-June 17, 2009

…I shall miss you, Mike and cherish the memories of the best times we have shared.

Lin

FRIENDS,
I AM SO VERY SORRY TO USE E-MAIL FOR THIS MESSAGE.
IT IS WITH A VERY HEAVY HEART THAT I CONVEY THIS DREADFUL NEWS, THE PASSING OF IZ THE WIZ.

IZ COLLAPSED AT HIS BROTHER’S HOME IN FLORIDA, AND WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE CAUSE OF DEATH WAS HEART FAILURE.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DUDE. A MELLOW, POLITE AND PEACEFUL MAN.
I AM GLAD THAT HE WAS SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS, FANS AND FAMILY AT HIS TUFF CITY SHOW IN THE BRONX, JUST DAYS AGO. A MONUMENTAL OCCASION, AND I KNOW HE WAS HAPPY AND PROUD OF HIS MOMENT TO SHINE.

AS FURTHER INFORMATION COMES MY WAY, I WILL CONVEY IT.

PEACE TO ALL,
ZEPHYR

Massive respect to the all-time NYC subway king, rest in peace IZ THE WIZ. I clearly remember when starting to write back in 1978 everyone spoke of the two kings, IZ and VINNY. But IZ was by far the all-time king, for many years before that, and many years afterwards. Seeing the IKE and SIKE pieces rolling by on the J's is permanently burned into my memory, not to mention the countless IZ fills every year on practically every line I ever rode. Then, 20 years later in 1998, a brand new red and silver IZ THE WIZ piece on a white B&M boxcar rolled by me while benching a freight, and was just so incredible and inspiring to see. Rest in peace IZ, and thank you for the unbelievable and unmatched amount of work and inspirational continuity you put in throughout your lifetime.

IZ THE WIZ All time all-city king

Aliases: IZZY, CI (CRAZY IZ), IKE 327, CLICK
Started: 1972 Primary affiliations: TMB, POG, TOP, 3YB, TC Local origin: Queens, NY
Main lines: ALL CITY

IZ THE WIZ is without question one of New York City's most prolific writers. IN aka KILL 3 is credited with the most extensive all-city bomb in NYC during 1975 and 76, but IZ was the longest reigning all-city king in NYC history, taking the title many times throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

IZ was well known for his throw-ups in the mid 1970s on the IND and BMT subway divisions. In the late 1970s he broadened his focus by working on top-to-bottoms, burners and scenery whole cars on the presteigious 2 and 5 lines of the IRT subway division. During this period he silmultaneously maintained all-city throw-up king status.

He painted for a variety of top level crews. He has served as president of The Master Blasters and the Queens division of Prisoners Of Graffiti. He has also painted for The Odd Partners, The Crew, The Three Yard Boys and others too numerous to mention. IZ appeared in the documentary film Style Wars and portrayed a transit police detective in the film Wild Style. His work has been displayed in museums and gallerys throughout the world.

What year did you first start writing?
Started street taggin' in '72.

Who got you in to it?
EPIC 1&2, VINNY and The 102 Park Boys. Seeing VINNYs and CLIFFs.

What was the first line that you hit?
Did a couple of throw-ups on the As. First started ragging E coal mines.

Where did you catch those at?
E Yard, Linden Boulevard right across from the housing projects. Never seen a little ol' white boy like me running around the fuc*in' neighborhood

Which writers were most inspiring to you for pieces and throw ups?
TRACY was already out. He had some nice sh*t. Dean was very influential in like me doing window downs de-de-de-de-de-de (Referring to families) I brought that to the As 'cause it was like on the IRTs.

Oh, so that originated on the IRTs then?
IN Originated it. I just keep his hope alive, his dream goin' you know. It was really a whole bunch of guys COSA, DIZZY ONE, TEAR, UNCLE JOHN. A whole bunch of guys.

Who were like your main writing partners from that era?
My first writing partners. I used to write with EPIC 1 & 2, I used to write with FI 1. I used to write with VINNY, EVIL 13. I went bombing once with JESTER. That sh*t was sweet. It was me, JESTER, WIZZ ONE and 00One (Double O One). And it was like me and JESTER, we were the die hards we kept on bombing till there was no more paint.

How many whole cars do you think you produced?
Whole cars? You mean like burner top-to-bottom jammies? Oh I don't know, I never counted but I know in the years 81-82 I did no less than 25, and that was just in that time period. I mean, there are people who who have pictures of my whole cars that I don't even have that I forgot I did.

Which writers do you remember as being the first real kings of the As?
Well besides VINNY, you had BOD, he was up. TEE and STIM were up a lot after VINNY faded away For a little while CLIFF 159 was the man when those Ding-Dongs came out. Forget about it! He had every single panel. Raggin' them shi*s.

CLIFF even had a PAZ 2 tag running on an A Ding-Dong up till 1982.
All due respect to you, I understand a PAZ 2 tag is exciting to you, but I'm talkin' every fuc*in' Ding-Dong had a CLIFF on it, on the middle panel. Every car, alright. I don't think he missed a single train.

He must have been on a serious mission.
Not even VINNY did that sh*t!

I remember FLINT 707 on plenty of Coal mines. I mean these guys were my heroes. Ya know what I mean. Piecing on a fuc*in' E train next to a TRUE 1 piece. Know what I mean. That's an orgasm for me.

How did you meet CAZ 2?
I met CAZ through CISCO. I thought he was a nice guy, but the fellas used to say CAZ was a sucker, but he wasn't a sucker because he didn't believe in stealing paint. You know if he was down to bomb, but anyway for about ten or twenty cans of paint I bought a Corderfeild coat off of him when Corderfeilds were in style with the fur collars. So that's how I met him. He wanted to trade cans for his coat. His father found out about it and was pissed. I had to give him his coat back. He said he would owe me some cans. I said don't worry about it. Let's talk to these other guys see if we can do something. We did something. We did a lot of something!

Yeah. I remember all that bombing all-city.
He supplied the get-high and I supplied the paint ya know. It was a pretty good partnership. Ha ha.

I just found out about this this afternoon, and I was sadened. I was fortunate enough to meet Iz and talk trains, etc, past present and future at the Steel Wheels show this past October. He was a humble, down to earth guy, and I didn't even feel worthy to be in his presence, but he made me comfortable, and had no ego, like a lot of people I've met over the years who couldn't even accomplish an 1/8 of what he did. the "hell iz for chidren" is one of the sickest cars ever done. thanks for the great shot work ur soul. and for the multitude of fliks by STYLEISKING. I can only imagine that all the fliks available on the web are only a small fraction of the work IZ put in.

as a testamony to IZ's legacy i emplore any/all of you to try this little game i play called wheres IZ (because you know he's there).

every time you see a movie filmed in NYC in the 1970s and 1980s, and old bombed trains are featured, see how many times you can spot an IZ tag or throw up.

I havent seen any movies recently that fit this description, but i can remember spotting his tags in: the warriors, dreams dont die, death wish, and i know there are others.

additionally; on the newyourksubway.org site there are thousands of random fliks of old bombed trains from the 70s and 80s. IZ has tags and throw ups in more of them than anyone else. sometimes you have to look for them, and sometimes it seems as if the photo was of the IZ throw up, not the train. Thats just another example of how prolific he was, how prevalent he was. he IZ the king. it is an irrefutable truth.

during the last days of subway graffiti we used to go to the scrap yards to take photos of insides. it was like a ritual. we used to search every nook and cranny of every car in the yard looking for the obscure and the hidden. I opend a motormans cab in this one car and behind me in the top corner of this already cramped space the was an old IZ tag on a circut box pannel. i was beside myself because at that moment i realized i was standing in the spot where the great IZ THE WIZ once stood to cop this tag. something told me to try to take that piece of the train. i wrestled with it for about 5 minutes until finally it broke free. all these years, all the photos i took and collected, all the graffiti paraphanalia i amassed over the years, this has always been my most prized posession. Later in 1998 I finally met IZ and had a chance to kick it with him and like most old writers he was extremely humble and down to earth. just a real person who happened to be the king of graffiti. I hung with him briefly again in 08 at the steel wheels show in atlanta.

you, my friend will always "be around"

Rest In Peace IZ THE WIZ.

IZ told me some stories and dropped a few pieces in a book for me back in like 99-2000. I was still a complete toy. I haven't really fucked with books since...that was all I ever needed. I bumped into him again over the years. He always remembered me..which always surprised me.

I didn't realize how hard he had gone back in the day till I started seeing him up myself all these years later. Knowing IZ really inspired me to learn more about history, respect the pioneers, and most importantly to always remain humble.

I had hoped to give him these flicks and others in person one day and am normally opposed to posting flicks like this online...but in memory of Mike.

People should think about IZ before they use the word "king" in the future about anybody else. That will keep the word from being overused. IZ THE WIZ set the standard.

With the passing of Iz The Wiz aka Michael Martin, comes the question, how dangerous is spraypaint? Here is a text Iz The Wiz wrote in 1998, take a second to read it and think about if you want the same to happen to you...

Fertile Soil, by IZ THE WIZ 1998
Unhealthy Habits

"I was having a hard time breathing and my heartbeat was irregular. I hadn’t been feeling well since Thanksgiving. Two friends from England had come to New York to bomb, but I wasn’t going this time. I asked my wife Kate to call 911. I got the emergency room. My lungs had been filling up with fluids, fluids that had surrounded my heart and caused severe strain. The following morning I was given a room and after being picked and probed for what seemed like hours by every doctor in the facility, I was diagnosed by kidney failure. Both of my kidneys had failed and the toxins that are normally filtered were poisoning my entire system. As I lay in bed, I couldn’t help wondering if I had just paid the ultimate price to be the best there ever was. Did over 25 years of writing do this to me? Whatever foreign matter I exposed myself to had to be filtered through my kidneys, and they had given out because of something. Was it the cement dust, sewage, filth, steel dust, or asbestos? Was it eating habits or the stress of everyday life? Was I addicted to spray paint? Or was it everything combined? It was time for a comeback, but not a graffiti comeback. I started to pray for the strength to get better. Family and friends were very supportive during these worse times. I didn’t eat solid food for weeks. I went 260 plus pounds to 165 the day I signed out. After being in bed so long I had to learn how to walk again. I started physical therapy and had to re-learn how to do the everyday activities all over again. I felt it was time to learn new eating habits and to be serious about it. I bought a book called Fit For Life, which still helps me with my diet. I learned the importance of balancing the types of food I eat. I have fruit for breakfast, a starch and vegetables for lunch, and a clean piece of meat and vegetables for dinner. I could go on and on about improper eating habits, but I’m still learning and improving. You don’t change 35 years of bad habits and addictions overnights. I’m not even sure if this is why I became ill, but I know it didn’t help. What I am sure of is that the medium I chose to express myself artistically and the sacrifices I put into being the best there did me in. That’s why I laugh at those self-proclaimed “kings”. I was labeled the king by my peers, (the truth IZ the truth), but that didn’t help me my health any. I didn’t know I was harming myself by not wearing a protection gear all those years. Instead of packing a mask I took an extra can of paint. All those nights in Grant Lay-Up and other places, SACH and I would hit from Saturday night to Sunday morning, whole car after whole car. All those throw-ups in the mid-‘70s with Rustos, 120 throw-ups a night, minimum. That’s a lot of paint, toxic paint. These days I’m busy making this art form legit, but thank god that I can still paint a burner once in a while. Only now I bring mask and use it! Years ago, I used to think it was funny – blowing the nose two days after bombing and having cascade green, marlin blue, dune tan, sandalwood tan, red, purple, or whatever color I used, come out. You want to have a long writing career? Be smart. If you don’t believe me, BLADE about the high levels of lead he and COMET and the other members of The Crazy Five have in their blood. Eat right, take care of your body. It’s the only one you have. Don’t worry about looks, wear a mask."

so very true, and profound. but to play the devils advocate, IZ painted much of the graffiti he is known for in tunnels with led based rustoleum. I dont think they removed lead from the formula until the early 1980s. and even than it was still pretty bad if you were in a tunnel that was not designed to exhaust paint fumes and other toxins. so that in addition to concrete dust, rail/brake dust, asbestos etc. made a deadly cocktail of shit to inhale as regularly as he did, as he readily admits. i dont wear a mask when painting outdoors, but then again I paint MAYBE 3 times a year. in total, i havent done even a fraction of the bombing IZ did. Either way the lesson is what im sure he would want all of us to take from his life as pointed out above. WEAR YOUR MASK!

Wish I could have met IZ. He seemed so chilled and down to earth even with all that well deserved fame. The comments in this thread say it all.

Thank you for everything IZ... Rest in peace.

Iz the Wiz is to the graffiti universe what Biggie was to the rap game
what Elvis was to rock & roll, what Babe Ruth was to baseball,
What Jordan was to the bball, what Walter Peyton was to the running game.
this guys was a 1 million times gold glover with a trillion trips to the all star game.
he set the standard and raised the bar.

While every single one of us was home hugging our collective pillows
this guy was being all about it.

i cant wait to see the film and read the book because i thought i knew him pretty well.
but i'm finding out things now that are blowing my mind. trust me when i tell you

King is too small a word to describe Iz The Wiz (the man, the myth, the legend.)

the world is a dimmer place without him

So very true... IZ definately set the bar for a lot of people!!! I'm still hoping to have the book and film out next year, i just wish Miky was still here to enjoy it in person but I know he'll be proud.

Are you coming on Sunday Bem? 1pm...
