A 21-year-old who Santa Clara police deemed the city's most prolific tagger, and who was originally charged with 11 counts of vandalism, made a deal this month to plead no contest to lesser charges and is scheduled to spend up to a year in jail.
Roman Kosulin entered his plea Aug. 3 to two felony and two misdemeanor counts of vandalism, said Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Amy Cornell. On Sept. 25, he's expected to be sentenced to up to a year in jail and pay $7, 525 in restitution for the spots he tagged with the moniker "Askr'' or "Asker."
The plea saved Kosulin from a maximum of three years and eight months in prison, if he had been found guilty on all 11 vandalism counts: two felonies and nine misdemeanors.
Police arrested Kosulin in June, after detectives alleged he spray-painted his moniker about 100 times on baseball dugouts, sound walls, elementary schools, parked vans and apartment complexes.
Detectives said they asked Kosulin what "Askr" stood for, and he replied that he simply liked the way it looked, but that he also liked to ask a lot of questions.
According to an encyclopedia, Askr is the name of the first man created in Norse mythology. The word also has Arabic roots, and in Russian, the acronym ASKR has to do with a complicated form of thermoanalytical kinetic research.
