sure do. still living large out east i presume?
i didn't paint any of those old trains although it would've been more than easy to pull wholecars there.
they are property of a railway museum. their restoration is the result of countless hours of work by unpaid railfans who love trains equally as much, if not more than i do. they spend their weekends fixing those up.
i support the preservation of history of the rails. some of those cars are one of a kind. i feel fortunate to have seen them in pristine condition and i wouldn't want to take that away from other railfans.
don't think i'm on too high of a horse though. i had to have my girl lock up my paint so i wouldn't go do them. no shit.

Since rotten really brough out the quality flix I thought I'd try and do the same to keep this topic going...
This is the storage yard next to the Wychwood carhouse in toronto circa 84-85, all these streetcars (PCCs) are surplus and in the process of being auctioned by the TTC (toronto transit). I grew up during the end of the PCC era, and let me tell you, the newer light rail style street cars cant hold a fucking candle to these joints. You'd have to ride one to know what I mean...
[img]http://www.escape.ca/~cmillar/pccoutside.jpg'>
Here's a shot of the inside of one of the PCCs. These things were sweet...big cushy seats...windows that rolled up so you could catch a nice summer breeze...even the lights were better, with these molded glass covers, and real bulbs (none of this neon tube shit...)
[img]http://www.escape.ca/~cmillar/pccinside.jpg'>
People are always asking me how I know all this shit about trains, and I tell them I've been a train geek since I was little...here's what I'm talking about...I'm about 6 in this photo I think...

This is the old trainshed at the Miluakee Road station in Minneapolis. This photo was taken a few years ago, before they started restoring the station. Take a look at the ducts in the back, they were built so that when the engine pulled in, it would be underneath, so all the smoke (we're talking steam era here) would be funneled out through the roof. Some nice detail work on the steel supports on the side too.
[img]http://www.escape.ca/~cmillar/trainshed.jpg'>
Here's a long shot of the station. the shed is on the left. the building with the Chode bomb on the roof is the luggage/freight dock. the station itself is below the clock tower.

This is the garbage train, parked outside the davisville shops on yonge st. These cars are the same as the original Glouster Cars (Red Rockets) that were bought in the 50s when the subway opened. these two were purchased as part of a small order of a newer version of the glousters that was painted silver, to look more like the new stainless steel units, but they ended up purchasing cars from another company, so these saw service for a few years before being retired for use as maintenance equipment.

[img]http://www.escape.ca/~cmillar/greenwood.jpg'>
this is a view looking east from keele station. The tracks on the right used to be the keele yards, back when the line ended at this station. its no longer used, except to store some scale/maintenance equipment that doesnt get much use.

those PCC streetcars are the product of the depression when streetcar designs varied wildly from one system to the next. a confrence of the presidents of the major transit systems sat down to come up with a design for a new standard streetcar. They came up with the PCC (President's Confrence Car). Toronto started getting PCCs in 1938 (two years after they first came out) and by the 50s had the largest fleet in the world. When other systems with PCCs shut down toronto bought out tons of them. some of the scraps in that yard were originally made for systems in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Kansas City, and Birmingham. The last PCC in regular service in toronto was in 96 or so, but they were being phased out since the begining of the 80s. I just caught the tail end when I was growing up riding them...
they got replaced by the CLRV (Canadian Light Rail Vehicle):
[img]http://transit.toronto.on.ca/transit/streetcar/images/clrv4063.jpg'>
and the larger version called the ALRV (Articulated Light Rail Vehicle):
[img]http://transit.toronto.on.ca/transit/streetcar/images/chart14.jpg'>
for anyone wondering about the skytrain in Vancouver/People mover in Detroit/RT in scarbourough this is what it looks like...
they all use ICTS (Intermediate Capacity Transit System) cars/technology, so the only difference is the paint job.

Just like the streetcars, the best subway cars were phased out during the 80s. The Red Rockets (known officially as Glousters) had way more character then the generic new stainless steel cars...here's an example of what they look like...
[img]http://transit.toronto.on.ca/transit/subway/images/subw5089.jpg'>
the garbage train shot I posted was later versions of the same type of car, but they dont look the same without that paint job.
[img]http://transit.toronto.on.ca/transit/subway/images/subw5104.jpg'>
I can remember waiting on the platform at eglington forcing my parents to wait till a red rocket came through before getting on...shit. I think they stopped using them in regular service just after I left in 89. they used them in rush hour service for awhile but their all gone now. shit.
heres a photo of greenwood yard, its the same as mine essentially...this yard is so nicely set up for getting photos...the streets around it slope from being above the shops/yard at one end to being below at the other end, so you can see it all...
