i dontknow why im being so crabby about this but...
having a 'tag' and claiming you write dont make you a writer... do any of you honeslty think nas was out bombing at 3 in the morning? when sudz claims he's a writer, you guys dismiss him... but since these guys are rappers, that means they're for some reason, beyond that criticism? growing up in the city, graff is a fact of life. everyone has a tag, weither they really use it or not. so to hear these cats brag about how they used to write cause it gives them street credibility is bullshit... its offensive to everyone that's ever snuck out of their house at 3 in the morning to bomb.
the whole point is, get off the dick. just cause its spoken doesnt mean its the truth... just cause phatlip claims he fatlip + random girl on a bus seat doesnt mean he was a writer..
fuck im crabby today...

the best part about that crack is that its going over a ces biter.
i dont know about these other rappers claims but i do know that tame one is a real writer. hes been writing since at least 85. there is a 1986 tame peice still up near where i live. drive down south orange ave in newark and you will see tame and probably no one else cause the city buffs so much. when first saw the "wrong side of the tracks" video on the box in like 94, i was shocked because i had just bombed that station myself and saw the shit he did in that video in person.

the great debate. im not tryin to sound preachy but growing up in nyc in the 70's more than half the kids in the city were writing. around the neighborhood, on the insides of subway cars in motion, kids who lived in the neighborhood of one of ny's 18 yards..all these kids were writing. krs one wrote. so did fab 5 freddy (who isnt really a rapper but ya know) some kids took it a lot farther than others..a lot like today, but it wasnt as much ego, it was just something everybody used to do for fun. im not into the whole element of hip hop thing, cause factually writing was around at least 10 years before hip hop...thats word. so if anything writing created hip hop. i think a lot of kids today hate what hip hop has become. but you have to understand back in the 70's & 80's hip hop wasnt all over the radio. it wasnt something you could purchase in a store.
so dont get all souped up on that 3 element shit. but dont hate on hip hop too hard either.....anyway.

The writer who was known as a writer first and foremost, and had burners running on the lines before he came out as a nasty M.C. was PESO 131 T.D.S. (a.k.a. PESO of The Crash Crew). this dude was a style master in the mid-to late-seventies before "hip-hop" as we know it existed. Many of the first generation Hip-Hop D.J.s were also REAL writers, but thats a different post. I also got to give it to TAME and EL the SENSAI , these dudes did hit the One line with F.C. crew in the mid-eighties before they came out rapping, and bear in mind that not many Jersey heads actually hit New York M.T.A. ...and I did see some KRS ONE station tags before I ever heard of him as an M.C. ...Kaves from L.O.B. had some trains in 86 as well. But you have to bear in mind that, like Average Whitey said, everyone in New York in the 80s had a tag, that didn't make you a writer though. Everyone had a basketball too, it didn't mean we all made the N.B.A.

so dont get all souped up on that 3 element shit. but dont hate on hip hop too hard either.....anyway.
i tried to make this point before once. years ago, graffiti was less of a distinct subculture than a recreational activity. when i was getting into graffiti, a hell of lot more people wrote than do now. but most people only did so for months or a couple years at most. only a small percentage ever tried to do a peice. when i was 13 years old, every kid in my school had a "graffiti sign" even if they never wrote it outside of their notebook. it wasn't like the "serious writers" hated on these people.
toy writers were less bad then because they were less ambitious. most people just picked a simple style. the shapes of the letters you used were determined which neighboorhood you lived in.

This was taken from the massive attack websight bio.
The group is named Massive Attack. The music is indescribable as it mixes soul, hip-hop, reggae, dub, and rock. It is formed by three core members and brought to life by various collaborators. Robert Del Naja (aka 3D) was a graffiti artist doing community service after being arrested for his art. "Mushroom" Vowles and "Daddy G" Marshall were two members of the DJ soundsystem collective The Wild Bunch, along with Nellee Hooper, DJ Milo, and Willie Wee. They all met in the mid-eighties through the Wild Bunch. Massive Attack, as a group, came into fruition in 1987.

the first dilated one is right, but youre actually wrong on the roots...the kid was right, it is "hit up every conrer store wall for you" black thought is down with graff, and i have the black bbok from 1993 to prove it. his hand isnt that ill cause hes from south philly, but its still aight. he is talkin about taking tags on conrer store walls. i dont think a cipher is called a "conrer store war" in any city.

hymn2 out of seattle, i think some guys out of a group called the flood, there are the insult to injury guys who do more DJing but still do emcee,i dunno though why does it really matter?why does hiphop matter so much to you?or atleast the media dubbed "elements" me as a writer has nothing to do with the music i listen too, though alot is hip hop i oculdnt live without some skinless, or misfits, or anyother good brutal shit...but ill make one thing clear, i could be in YANNI's little musical ensomble and it wouldnt be here nor there when it came to what i wrote...brodem your horizen P.S. yes i know the misfits arnt brutal [img]http://www.12ozprophet.com/ubb//smile.gif'>

jesus, this has gone from 'emcee's who write' (a worthless topic) to "well my boy raps at open mic's sometimes an he painted a train with me last month" an even more worthless topic....
not to mention the fact that all an emcee has to do is mention a fat cap and that makes him a writer? get off their dicks. if some fat kid in your third hour math class said he was a writer cause he had a fat cap youd laugh at him. just cause some fucking rapper from NY said it doesnt make it the truth.
