But seriously, take the price tags off before you flick em. I happen to recognize those tags and those finds. Maybe nobody else will be able to read them, even in photoshop. But certain villains have been known to buy old cans off ebay, read the price tags naively left on them by the seller, search the store name, and actually drive several states away to clean out the dude's spot. (Which he should have cleaned out himself, but maybe he didn't have the $$ at the time.)

Few shots of some of my shelves...

Maybe one day i'll have the place to put them side to side on a big wall.

One question: in Europe we have a lot of 150ml(4,6oz), but it looks like you don't have smaller cans than 12oz in USA? Anybody knows why?

I'm not sure why smaller cans never caught on here in the states. For a brief time, both Krylon and Rusto had smaller cans, like Rusto's Speedy Dry line, but they seem to have faded away from the market quickly. Graffiti-wise, a small, 100 or 200ml can is pretty useless. The only successful cans I can think of in a small size are the hobbyist model paints, which are 3 oz. Pactra, Testors, etc.

Some of those old european cans are amazing. The playful graphic design, namely on those hit color and Guthaus(?) cans, is something that american brands have always seemed to be scared of. The color selection seems so diverse, too.

I gotcha man. I've been very lucky with user paint spots and fortunately did clear out two or three spots as soon as I came upon them - a good feeling that's for sure. Good knowledge to keep in mind...;)

Krylon started mini cans in their grenade cans in roughly 1955-56 and they continued with them in their normal paint line until 1968-70 and then used them again years later for their automotive paint cans. Rusto Speedy Dry's started in 1962 and ended in 1981 so they didn't go away all that quickly. ;)

Derusto had the Little Job cans and they were around for years as well...

thats what i said just before i put mine away as well as a set of american accents. i figure rustos and krylons had to start somewhere.
i might be sitting on some indian spice and summer squash that could turn into the icey grape, jungle green or hot rasberry of the future.

Yeah, just got a couple cans of that Orange from my brother who had worked at a recycle place over the summer. People are still bringing in collector cans from time to time too.

I love both Indian Spice and Autumn Gold, but I've noticed lately that those old AA cans take forever to dry and have gotten kinda runny. I don't recall them being that way in the mid 90's. They behave a lot more like Rusto than the current cans do.

I did this wall a few months ago in a head shop with a fade up from Indian Spice, Autumn Gold and Honey. Honey is such a good color.

Honey is the user can version of autumn gold, if you're saving your last autumn gold. Well, almost.

Yesterday i used some Ultra Flat Black Borden Krylon for a wall...

Man that was so fuckin FLAT when it came out! But on the can, when it was leaking. On the wall it wasn't that flat, maybe the 20 years have made their chemistrial effect.

I had a lot of problems to make them spray. I had to put a nail instead of a cap and use them as an extinguisher! But when i managed to make them spray, it was really cool, a really different way to spray than euro cans.

Straight from the European Historic Krylon Importator Big Boss Desk:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/Topgunz_2007/P1010085.jpg

He told me a lot of stories about european spray paint can market. They started importating Krylons back in 1965, and created SEDPA just for this. They were exclusive distributors for 30-35 years, and after that Krylon was too lazy, and didn't made any effort about european market.

He told me he had visited Norrisville PA factory one time...

They throw away all the documentation and old stuff ten years ago,:o

But i've managed to find some 91 UFBs and Safety Yellows.

He also told me that European Sparvar stole the US name, cause it wasn't protected in Europe, they stole the name, the 5 balls, and made their own brand.

This is a great piece of info that I never heard. Always wondered about that, and it makes sense. Nice to see some one out there doing their home work. That would mean some of the old krylons you have, along with the key chains were some of the first imported...

Top gun
01-29-2010, 11:24 AM
That is highly possible. 1965, there weren't alot of brands in France, maybe two or three, like Edel, Bersol(Auto-raccord, Hit Color) and Herpé(Altona).

It's really hard to find cans older than late 60's, and to find any infos on them.

He also told me that in 1969, at the Cologne Annual Hardware Convention(something like that), the Dupli-color guy saw that the Krylons on the SEDPA stand weren't empty ones, and he called the firemen, so the SEDPA had to take their cans back...little stories like that.

Benny's is junk. It's a strange department store chain on the east coast that seems to focus mainly on hardware and automotive products, though you can buy flannel pajamas and a six pack of cola along with your torque wrench and snow tires. In CT, they were mainly located in the shoreline towns. They have what seems to be a house brand of paint called "Majic", which I've only seem there. It's second-tier paint somewhere between the big name brands and $1 cans. They sell some Rusto colors that are a little harder to find, namely the outdoor decor colors, but I'd only stop at Benny's for paint if i was in a tough spot and that was the only store nearby. For some reason every time I walked into a Benny's I got depressed.

BIGMETALCIRCUS

Majic was not limited to Benny's, it was also sold at several other discount home stores, National Liquidators and some dollar stores also carried it.

I always thought National Liquidators was an oddlots store, where they get closeouts from stores going out of business and such? Either way, Majic is pretty bad in my experience.

Yeah, they have a website, apparently dollar store market stores and closeout fix up stores are their target market. In a way they're a lot like Champion, who by the way appear to use the same paint packaging company as that new Plutonium G line. Champion just put out a paint that has all the same "qualities" as the PG line, mold reducing formula, pleasantly scented, 360 degree valve, same dildo shaped can, similar colors and $7 each. Here's a link if anyone is interested (which I doubt): link (http://www.chaseproducts.com/product_details.cfm?item=4194112&market=Consumer)

so going through my stash of user cans, it was an old krylon bin. I had no lids on them and no caps in the valve. They were all on their sides, more n the bin that way. Alot of the valves seem like they have dried up shit in them..........they are mostly scraps etc but I still want to use them.Any tricks to getting these back in order....or am I fucked?

EPMDfan
03-09-2010, 12:24 AM
Shake the shit out of them, put on a WD40 style cap(the type you would put the hose into the nozzle) and try and spray them for a few secs. This will usually get the dried up paint out of the inner tube if it won't spray you are fucked... Good luck...

If you can't find a blaster cap you can make them. Take a stock tip, remove the center (part that determines shape of spray) and widen the notch on the neck of the cap to twice the width it is...

naw boys like i can't even get a cap in the valve............these are cans i've used and let sit, when you you leave really old paint sit on the side some times this clear coatesc shit will leak out the valve.

If all else fails, clean off the valve as good as possible and bring a pair of adjustable pliers with you when you paint. Crimp the valve with pliers (facing away from you and towards the wall) and blast away. You won't get anything resembling pretty, and you'll have whatever colors you're using all over everything, but at least you can get the majority of the paint on the wall in generally the right place.

i have a fuschia can in this brand i think i got it in an arts and crafts store in lincoln nebraska. any background on these?
ok - these are garbage - - interior decorators use them to ad color to fake flowers and stuff like that. my boy and I racked mad cans a while back - most of them were those 'designs' cans. that means they are mostly water -- if your going to use them shake them up - do a coat of pant, let dry then try another coat. they drip a lot, but i find that the black cans are very opaque - - goodluck

Another thing to possibly try is to pour some mineral spirits into a little bin or cup and put the cans valve down into them to soften up the solvents. Could work.

On a side note, I posted about some Chase/Champion paint a few pages back. It was their ultra enamel line they just released. I ordered some to try out (at a whopping $7/can), and it was ridiculously thick. Only drawback was that it uses male valves - and not the type that I have caps for.

Your other 'disaster' option is to whack the can bottom (concave part) onto a heavy metal object with a sharp point/corner with just enough force to put a small hole in it, then just aim it at your sketch and fill with it till it's gone. The corner of the bar on a boxcar works but you'll probably get paint all over your freight spot. I did this with balky Krylon silvers at a layup and it took me an hour to rip up all the silver grass and dirt and throw it away and smooth over the ground.

Got Rust Magic*?

Ok, so I just noticed a couple differences in some labels. Can anyone shed any light on this?

-Safety Purple has a smaller font for Rust Magic* but I noticed it was also not a registered trademark at that time. The can also has a slightly different label design.

-Gold, Copper & Silver notch. The Silver has Rust Magic* The other two do not. So... I think the Metalics & Primers don't, and maybe it's the Silver that's a miss-matched can? Anyone know?

jib25
03-14-2010, 09:27 PM
^ The Gold & Copper labels only say INTERIOR ENAMEL, not INTERIOR/EXTERIOR ENAMEL.

HAL
03-15-2010, 03:04 AM
Most metallics are designed for interior use only. Metallic paints use a different formula than regular enamels, and don't hold up well to weather. The only exception that i can think of are these.

I think jib was looking for the dope on the labeling of the cans, not the usage scenario. But good luck trying to figure it out - whereas Rusto had a slow, well documented series of label changes over the years, Krylon was all over the place, changing their label design and sub-markings almost every year. Add to that the different run times for colors introduced late, discontinued early, or printed for sale in other countries and it's a tangled web to get a picture of what can said what for year X.

HAL
03-18-2010, 07:09 AM
I believe the metallics said only "Interor Enamel" all the way through the flatball years.
