Think it is just perspective. A mini can would have an A after the number, and pineapple yellow did not come in 1/2 size, but hot pink did...

Styrofoam paint..? That' s incredible. I used to test cans on styrofoam and the chemical reaction was nuts. It would eat away at it and then stop. made for interesting textures and whatnot. Nice pics.

DEEN, Borden acquired krylon around 1966. That is when you see the Borden Script cans, the birth of the 5ball design. Before that Krylon was made in Norristown PA. I am assuming but not 100% sure they were their own company. Foster and Kester I believe were the original people to start it. They started with just a clear plastic spray coating, and it was a couple of years before they started making colors. I would have to dig into my archives to give you the exact info, this is just what I can remember at 1am....

VSP get that sunset orange away from those other cans. It's cool but those sunset oranges pop a seam and spew on whatever's next to em more than any other collected can. At one time I had 12 or so and I think at least half have failed. Heard anecdotes from other people as well about that color.

My permanent collection/set up is totally based on feedback from of a lot of folks who've experienced issues with names that are prone to leaks. The Oranges, Reds and Yellows are all on the bottom shelf for safe keeping. If there's a pin hole leak on the seam of a litho can then that fucker gets emptied...

Got a Chrome Yellow notch with a slow leaking valve that won't stop. Tried blast caps and cutting the stem of some fat caps to drain it, but it never quite gets it all since the dregs are still there and there's no pressure.

That sounds like a Rusto Stock cap. They were on pretty much all Rusto brand paints untill the late 90s at the latest. They where good for everything from filling to outlines. One of my personal favortie caps or that era. Seeing how at this point its so old and your unlikly to see one again. I say dont use it and just keep it. Its a historical item now.

can you still use old cans from collection or they will leak?

Rustofills

Some cans have a much better long term shelf life then others. I have used 20 plus year old cans of paint with no issue and I have used 8 or less year old cans that shit the bed by any one of these reason. Lost all they're proellent slowly or the valve system jam fails and or the little rubber wring in the valve brakes down and you get leaking. Some thicker paint settles at the bottom of the can so thickly that even if you shake it for 15 minutes, you'll still get a clog in the valve line. Normally a couple of light taps on the top of the valve on something hard and a fat cap blast out will resolve that. Its just luck and how you stored them pretty much. But most good brands of spray paint do work well many many many years past when they were filled.

As much as its easier to leave your cans standing up straight for storage. As many of us do. Its much better to have them either in something like a paint rack that leaves them sitting in a angle or store them laying on they're side when sittig for a long time. As this helps when you go to mix the can when shaking it. As the paint that has accumulated on the lower half of the can will be forced to move from the laws of gravity when tilted straight up and shaken.

btw what's better? to left the cap or to remove it from and old can?

Rustofills
09-25-2010, 03:09 PM
Juca.

Leaving the cap on is best, As that helps to slow down the rate in which the rubber wring could dry out. Also. Do not test spray any can you are planing on keeping stored away for a long period of time. As that "CAN"speed up the process of propellent leakage, If it leaks. But thats not always the case. I could get technical about it. But i dont feel like braking it all down.

In short. Leave caps on and dont push them until you are going to use them.

As 1959 said, this was IZ's "paint room" at his house somewhere around 96-98. The wall to the right that you can't see was all old paint, mostly Rustos and Red Devils... :D Unfortunately he donated most of the old paint to a museum that was "supposed" to have a graffiti exhibit and they never did and the stuff just sits in storage... He also gave them his jean jacket that Midg painted for him... :(

Yeeeeaaaahhhh, Chicago's rough when it comes to the vintage paint market. As soon as the ordinance went through in the 90's and shops had to give up their paint, most of the real heads stocked up super hard, and the few low-profile spots that we still have get cleared out whenever they get new stock...

is there a way to tell what year or close to what year a can of krylon is from by looking at the can? Mine all have a 1991 copyright date but since they're all from different sources I doubt that they're all from the same year, sorry if this has been asked before

edit - oops, this questions answered on the first page, my bad

HAL

There's the '91 copyright, and then you see the ones that were updated for 1994. Between 1991 and 1994, it's anyone's guess. I believe the company switched to the (terrible) 3D logo in 1996. After that, you can kinda tell based on the label, since they seemed to switch it up every couple years to something even more awful than the last.

I have to post some Devil tins I just picked up in a trade. They're paper wrap poly quarts, and I'm guessing could be the last design style before they totally re-branded 'cause the devils face is different, like his eyes/nose are stylized/simplified, unless it's a mistake... still nice quarts. Will post soon...

ah, thank you sir, it was a nice color, wish i would have saved a few. i'll keep looking around...krylon osha safety green and plum were nice..jade green and colonial blue also. that's about all i used of the late 90's krylon..black and white of course...one question did it ever not say "new" on the terracottas? i feel like it said satin on it at some point. maybe i remember wrong. thanks

HAL
10-25-2010, 10:51 PM
I seem to remember terracotta graduating from the "new" cap, but all the ones I still have kicking around the crates have that top. Maybe the later ones are the "satin" caps. I remember when they switched a couple colors from gloss to satin. Sage Green, Terracotta, etc.

slyle
10-25-2010, 11:45 PM
Hal, they did not switch them from gloss to satin, but instead offered a satin line. Most likely in response to AA. True blue and banner red also came in satin. A spot by me still has a grip of the banner red. I prefer the satin colors, and the true blue is almost IMPOSIBLE to find. I think most of my terracottas are satin. I still have a couple cases of them, cleared out a few closeout spots in New England area that were carrying them a couple years ago. I used so much of that color I was just sick of it.

It pays to stop at a dumpster outside of a house when you see it being filled by the former homeowner. I scooped these today. I actually been eyeballing this dumpster for a few days and today Isaw the guy cleaning his house so I pulled over and asked "Hey, did you or do you have any spray cans you're tossing.?" His response, "Yeah, I just brought some out and they're in that bag on the ground I didn't throw in the dumpster yet. Just don't make a mess." in summation, my hands got very dirty, but my shelf just got a little fuller. All full, except the topless red (30% full).

Just looking at Scottie can designs... Kind of funny how the color name appears on each in the same place along with the 'Stops Rust' logo, but on the CLEAR they do away with the 'Stops Rust' and put the massive CLEAR font just so ya know! No reason really why it couldn't have just been like the color names up top. Altho'... very helpful if you grabbed one by mistake and were about to use it in the yard/tunnels... Mrs. Wallbanger's been looking for a bike. As we're leaving Ma Duke's house after Thanksgiving dinner, we see that the neighbors across the street are moving out, and have left a bunch of stuff by the curb-- including a couple bikes. Wife goes to check them out while I warm up the car, and comes back over with a can in hand. "Bikes were shit, but they had this old can of spray paint over there... do you want it?"

"Yeah!"

Nice, I visted a friend in New York in 2003 or so. Across from his apartment in Brooklyn was a shitty ass flea market. They had nothing I wanted but on the way out the door I spotted an old Rusto can which turned out to be an aluminum big face can, fucker charged me full price and wouldn't haggle either.

Ruso - that's a given for sure, but any can can go for a lot. It all depends what you're after and whether you need to fill a gap in the collection with that elusive can or color.

jib25
12-06-2010, 02:02 PM
^Also certain cans become like treasures if you find them in person, like the Rusto White. It can all depend on a situation, that then becomes a story, how long it took to find and doing the leg work that makes that can even more special and therefore valuable.

I can't buy a can from another collector...i need to dig it, to steal it, to talk during hours to the 80 years old store-owner about the old days, to make miles to find it.

And even if i'd want to sell some of my cans i wouldn't be able to put a price on 'em, it ain't about money.

i agree about the sentimental value/story behind finding a can is what matters..side note, i cleaned out my dad's garage of old user cans i had left there for one reason or another over the years, nothing impressive, but fun for me....and a couple flicks of an unusual water-based rusto enamel..the 55 gallon drums are gnarly

Honestly most people would probably say nah, throw it out and just get krylon and rust oleum. That derusto is from 91, And its 3/4 full.

The way i look at it, is if a can is in decent condition, and its over 10 years old, keep it. look at how much shit people throw away in life and say 'fuck i shouldnt of tossed that or sold it"

Another thing to remember when collecting is save all the scrap cans you can. For instance,. lets say i get a almost gone can of hot pink. a couple months later i get another can of an older hot pink thats halfway full. Get your mixing tubes out, and fill the halfway full can. wipe it down with a little laquer thinner, and Now you have a brand new hot pink.
