You have a great chance to live in USA and have the digging passion...In Europe it's getting harder and harder to get old cans. When i see the number of old cans(not sold by collectors but by particulars that don't have a clue about spray paint collections), signs, charts, and paint stuff on Ebay.com, compared to what i can find on europeans ebays i think "damn..."

But USA are a big country with a huge past for spray paint, unlike Europe. When i see the size of your racks...god damn.

But i'm a keep doing my thing, not later than tomorrow! Hope i'll find stuff.

Juca, what I usually do with old cans that I plan on using in the future is gently remove the stock nozzle and replacing it with my favorite cap, then never take it off. Particularly with Krylon. I'll pop a NY thin on there, and if i don't finish the can in one session, spray it upside down the clear it, wipe it off, and try my best to keep it from clogging.

hard to find 400 favorite caps ^^ 3 failed valves from 410-411 cans, stock caps on them now,and removed all used cans around 60...

^Yeah, but Top Gun man, your collection is insane! Probably one of the best examples in Europe. Crazy props to you for finding all the stuff in stores and hunting shit down. Those vintage Euro cans are solid gems.

I got to find someone to trade some old school UK cans with... Smoothrite, Hycote, Autochem Chrome, Carplan, Cycle Style & Plastikote Home Style. Was pretty stoked recently to get an email from one of my boys with a Maribu Buntlak chart. Actually, I think it used to be mine before I moved and gave up all my old paint...

30 or 40 euros of gas, and 1euro/can max, except for reeeeeeeaaaal hard-to-find gems that the seller don't lower price, or that i can't rack.

10am to 19pm work, non-stop, i smell if the "big" cities gonna be good places, if not i visit every fuckin little village on my way back.

Here's a question for youz guyz. What's the story with Mr. Spray.? Is he a small/mid-market brand.? Was it regional in terms of distribution.? Is it still on shelves as new product.? If anyone has any pics of other labels or colors post them if you can. Also, if anyone has any Mr. Spray cans they are willing to trade/sell or give away for the cost of shipping let me know, I'm diggin' them. Included is a Mr. Spray "Shamrock Green" I scooped at a closeout spot last week. Other's I got 4 years ago from a garage. Thanks.

Mr Spray is a Plasti-kote brand if memory serves. I think it's their cheaper line paint compared to something like Rust Not, but I don't remember what the performance was like. Nice to see that it may still be in production.

excellent technique, I admire the approach to the hunt. I hope you manage to find some sources that are not stores, perhaps used cans from mechanics or carpenters. I imagine there is a lot in private houses and businesses in Europe.

Believe there's a super early Mr Spray too where the character and design looked way vintage. Will take a flick and post unless someone already has it.

My only Mr. Spray is a full can of blue that I found on the ground at a piecing spot in Quebec in 1995. It had the french label, and was actually the first can it ever occurred to me to "collect".

On the road at 7am, arrived in Liège, Eastern Belgium at 9.30-10pm, 2 hours looking after paint stores, nothing...I thought "damn another blank trip..."

I decided to go to the other city, Namur, on my road back, but i had the plan to stop in every minor cities i'd came across...

I stopped in Huy, and quickly found a hardware store called "Quincaillerie du Sud"("South Hardware"), got in, and immediatly spotted the cans, but nothing really old, except those Ultra-Color(80's can, super great paint) i already have, and those Tek(1986)...

I asked about five times the owner to look after some old cans, he said "i don't have anything", and i kept asking. Then he came back from the back of his store with those Krylon boxes! Hoooooooolllyyyy shiiiiiiiiiiit!!! I was in a dream, big time digging, finally. But i wasn't satisfied so he felt he had to look harder, and then he brought me the Borden Krylon(by the way what is this color? Green Bronze?), but without her cap. I said "Man you gotta find this cap dude..." He went back with a big light-torch and came back with it!

On my road back i was so fuckin happy that all the other cities i've visited between 1pm and 5pm, and where i hadn't found shit, it's wasn't so bad, cause i had all those crazy never seen before Krylons!!!

Top Gun, those cans are amazing... top digging marks!

Bronze Green is probably the best way you could translate O.D. Khaki (Olive Drab Khaki), a military color and one of the most interesting Krylon colors. It has so many shades in it.

Those Krylon decorators are fantastic. Have never seen those before... Brussels address, Dutch and French only, it's like they made these only for Flanders?? Benelux?? Amazing!!

O.D. Khaki? So it's super-rare! Cool!

Yeah those cans were exclusively for France, Belgium and Switzerland(where Domit still sells Krylon nowadays...)

Krylon had a lot of difficulties to break on the other markets, in Germany it was due to the competition with Auto-K and Peter Kwasny(Mr. Dewavrin, the french SEDPA boss told me great stories about what happened during the 68 DIY Show in Germany. Peter Kwasny called the firemen saying the Krylon stand was on fire or something vicious like that, just when the stands were crowdy as fuck! Bad publicity...

The store-owner where i found the Krylon told me he was in the store since 1974 as an employee, and 1978 on his own. He told me the cans were here like way before he was hired, and that it was the old boss' own cans, who was a car-fanatic, and that he used to make little jobs on his favorite models...Like the Presto spray for the Opel Camaro!

Krylon Glanzbronzegruen/ Glanzend Bronsgroen we should also note is Glossy (glanz means shiny, lustrous, brilliant, etc.)....

O.D. Khaki was its own catalog category, the 2300s. It was that interesting of a color that it didn't fit in with the metallics, the greens, nor the browns. And the more common is 2301, which is glossy. But there was also a much shorter-run flat O.D. Khaki, discontinued in the 60s or 70s. Anyone got one?

WHATS THE OLDEST CAN ON THIS THREAD? COLOR AND MONETARY VALUE ? JUST CURIOUS.

imported_joewelcome
02-04-2011, 12:11 PM
yep that can was in The Art Of Getting Over, one of the first places to showcase (but not explain) old cans.

samsung- this is a complicated question. the oldest cans are the canister/"soup can" models of spray paint, dated roughly to the late 40s. color demand and monetary value both fluctuate greatly, vary with the buyer, and are not easily explained.

people routinely come in here every few months and although we don't want to make it exclusive and aloof, they don't know what it is we do and just tactlessly ask us, "what do i have to find to make a lot of money easy?!" you're not doing that, right?

Yea. Even though these arent really sought after, ive been told that alot of people dont realize its compared to Krylons barcode and paper label paint, which was pretty good.

Im not a Rustoleum guy really, maybe because on the west coast Krylon and OSH were our main source of paint, Especially in the early 90s. I still think Can Control and alot of other graffiti mags helped put krylon on the map out my way.

But i do however get alot of people who hit me up for scottys and or 83s all the time. Alot of people like Rustoleum regardless of the years i guess.

Im still a rookie, who knows maybe ill have a collection of rustoleum too down the line.

Thanks guys. The british black is dope. that satin is a borden from columbus ohio.

Theres 4 things that make this can different.

1) The "Satin Finish" on the side.
2) The 5 balls are smaller than usual.
3) It has a Red identification label on the can, instead of the normal black
4) It shows a "selling slogan" underneath the krylon stamp. Talking about what it does.

This can has no cracks in the lid, and is more than half full.

78-83 rustso are equal to paper label/lithograph notch and non notch top krylons. Also similar to age of Ing. label caps which came after them. Bar codes were more late 80's cans, similar in age to the rusto's with comfort tips.

Those are great cans, with a real classic look. I still grab them if I find them full or close to full. The 78's are my favorite the stops rust logo still contains drips, the scotti is on the back, and they still used old color names like fire hydrant red instead of regal red. Good paint either way.

for a minute in the late Borden era, Borden clearcoat came like that, with the adjusted graphics. i think there's gloss and satin clear in that style. Krylon seemed to keep certain can styles for less-popular products the same for a long time, or make them unusual and stand out. also, I love that DuPont can art, and EasyWay is also a classic (did Plasti-kote make that?).. and yes British Black is pretty nuts.... at least there isn't a friggin golliwog on it (that's for jib and nick).

Krylon's Rust Magic line was a flop, that's one reason you never see that stuff. Krylon shifted from listing "Rust Magic" as an ingredient, then made that line circa 1985, then it seemed to only last 3 or 4 years (have to check my charts). It was sorta from the same time that Rust-oleum introduced Woodsaver. I suppose that no one believed Rust-oleum would make a wood paint any more than people expected Krylon to make an expressly anti-rust paint. Both were discontinued quickly, though Woodsaver is much easier to find.

Valdi, you're buggin! :)
Yep, their normal police don't carry guns and it's a pretty big deal to get caught with a handgun or a rifle if you're not hunting. Don't open up that issue, or else the Brits are gonna ram our handgun death rate in this country down our throats!

I would have to go over my color charts, but there are a couple of really odd short run colors from the 60's that either have not been found, or just as rare as pennant blue. That krylon "soup" can I posted is pretty rare. There are also tons of odd brands out there where complete color collections have not been found. Sears brands! Looks like Avocado. Safe bet for the era... and that's Vamm, a him. Haircut also a safe bet for the era!

Btw, 90s cans are usually easy to date (at least Rust-oluem and Krylon). Rusto always has dates on the can designs, Krylon cans will have one and often two dates on them. Krylon usually retains one date for a can design and a revision date usually in parentheses. So it'd say something like 1991 (Rev. 10/94), thus it's a 1994 can. Same for 1996 cans and so on.

I use paint thinner, but only on cans I need to return to the store for other cans (it's a long story, but a great way to get cans for a dollar and get rid of cans you don't want). Cans I trade or sell I will usually use the isopropyl alcohol from any drug store. Just a thought.

Those are his, though the nifty pink and american beauty were mine at one time...nifty pink is not bad paint, little on watery side, but real nice light pink. I love how the sparvar states "with concentrated color, use less to cover more" I guess Krylon was trying to build up their budget brand...

The can was made in San Leandro. About 30 minutes outside of San Francisco, at a company called Pacific Aerosol.

Where it states the contents weight, it says... NET16 ozs - Volume 1LB - Fluid 15 Ounces.

On the bottom of the can it says 68. That would probably be the reason this can has the same top as the 64 cans.

It could also be that the original owner had a yellow 64 and swapped tops. Who knows.

Personally when I checked out your auction last week or 2 weeks ago I thought, ok, so here's the grading scale, cool. Definitely very informative but it's a lot to take in. When I see an auction with just the color name and a super short description I usually move on because if I'm buying, anything on ebay actually, and the description leaves me wondering about the quality or trustworthiness of the seller, I don't feel comfortable giving my money away and worrying about what I just bought.

I normally avoid buying paint on ebay, but if i do some browsing, I prefer as much information as possible, with more than just a pic of the front of the can.

I had an older writer scold me cause I left my labels on my cans. They would never do that cause people would see where they got colors from....sort of like DJ's blacking out the labels on vinyl....I personally like to keep the on, some of the price stickers have great graphics or are from stores that are long gone.

When lables fall off I just reglue them on, though I have been known to be lazy and sometimes I just place them under the cap so I don't loose them....

Being that the cron is red I doubt the top is original....remeber the spot you dig anything can happen to used cans before they end up in your hands, "I found it that way" is not a good excuse for ignorance...

HAL
02-09-2011, 03:44 AM
I also prefer to leave the price stickers on, unless they go out for a trade to someone i don't know or trust. I think it gives the cans extra character.

No offense taken! I just wonder what buyers think, for ANY Ebay auction, when there aren't a lot of details given about the item. I have long found that the more info and care you give an item, the better you will do as a seller. Frankly, I got tired of people throwing around words like "mint" for seemingly no reason. If there's nothing to go on but personal opinions, then every can we find is gonna be "mint" because that sounds good.

Valdi- I know, it is a lot to take in. It took a lot of effort to try and write a scale that's detailed enough to work. We tested it for several hours and tweaked it. It is pretty simple once you start applying it, I've found.

Ebay's not that bad, but if I were you, I'd go pound the pavement, find every independent paint and hardware store in a 50 mile radius and check them out CAREFULLY and ask them. That's how many of us got started. Don't rack either-- those stores need your help just to stay alive these days.

Just a note to everybody, if you go on paypal and print out a shipping label for a box, its actually cheaper because you can tweak the weight a bit, and size, and it lowers the price.

I also build cars on the side, ive sent a whole "rear end" to los angeles and its only costed me 90 bucks this way. Dont be fooled into what the ups store charges you. Youll save more money doing it yourself.

y all my dupli colors are made by vogel,it means that they are made before 2000,my cans are white 80-90's cans, dope cans top, never seen can like that... they have 3 small hotchs on the top? like some shit for air?

That can up top is Topaz.

Top gun i understand where your coming from on the cans appreciation comment. I guess ive always liked the colors because when i used to write, the very first thing id look at was the lid to see the color. Then id look at what kind of can it was.

Now that all these cans are ancient, they are starting to be more appreciated because they bring back alot of memories for everybody. I honestly think that while everybodys out painting and keeping graffiti alive, the collectors are the ones preserving the history. And we need both of everybody.

So its cool to see you and other people hyped up about the oddball cans that look cool. That's what makes me want to go out every morning and get new paint.

Ive always been a fan of pastels and bright colors. In the late 80s early 90s alot of pastels, baby blues hot pinks, and reds were used in alot of dope burners. But they faded all the colors together and blended everything. Not like now where you see a 3 color fill in, and outline it with 2 or 3 colors. So ive always been a lid looker.

One of my favorite "Odd" brands, though not that odd. I like the older ones with the more bubble letter fonts, but these are pretty clean too.....looking to fill some gaps will trade one up for other Derusto....I need top for vivid red, Shell Pink, Sandy Beige, Dark Brown and any of the other safety colors (none of my charts list them)

This does not include Protective Coatings (Primers) Regal Plate, Epoxy, C-Glo, Little Jobs and Heatmaster. Maybe some pics of those later.
