This would make it worth that much more.
It would? Please explain what you mean. There's plenty of misc brand cans that were made to paint tractors and whatnot that had lead in them well into the 1990s or even later. Rusto only took lead out of their INDUSTRIAL (not commercial) paint around 1995.

The ONLY paint thats worth anything with lead, is lead based automotive paint (Not in a spray can) you cant find it anymore because of regulations. But some people still have stock of it somewhere. Alot of the old school hot rodders and car collectors know about lead based paint. Its what they used in the 60s. As far as a spray can having lead in it, it doesnt mean anything.
Most of the cans back in the day had xylene, now they dont. If it has xylene it doesnt make it a better can. (This is just my opinion, no disrespect)

A few things....first a Snow-in-a-can can. Free and picked up with the cans below. Still sprays (the guy I got it from HAD to test it) Thanks internet...you're the best.
Note: The can's warning says not to toss it into a fire, yet it's apparently no problem for your dad to smoke his pipe while spraying the snow onto a wreath for your mama. Go figure.

Krylon aerosol line production technician, "Uh boss, I just fucked up my mix and made some messed up off whites" - Krylon production manager, "Don't worry about it, we'll just make a line of 15 slightly off white colors and market it to those zombie consumers."
My impression of how they came up with that disaster of an idea.

I never caught those Whisper Whites on the shelves, only at the closeout spots. The Frost one is a really nice white, the rest are not bad but not great.

In thinking about movies that have spray cans in them it reminded me of this from Beat Street when they first show Spit going over Remo in the abandoned station. The can looks like it's about an inch short. It's obviously a Name on Can can and all the other proportions on the can are correct except for the bottom of the can. I even held a can in my hand the exact same way and the can appears to be about an inch short... very weird...

i know of at least 4-5 movie mistakes in that movie,
regarding that shot-
check the movie when spit sprays one of the walls or trains (I forget which) but before he sprays you see a slightly clear tag that already says SPIT right where he traces over it with the real paint.

So I was at my boys shop the other day flicking a bunch of cans and he picked up the Groovey Green Wet Look and was like damn this thing is light... And I told him yeah it is weird cause I got it and it is like brand new but felt like all the paint had leaked out and then I popped the lid off to show him how the cap had no paint on it and I notice that the top part of the can is at an angle. So I take a pic of it and take a small screw driver and pop it out to look inside the can and see whats up. When I popped it off I nearly shit... No paint, no ball, completely brand new inside!!!!
At this point I thought a couple things... Was it a fuck up and shipped empty? The answer to that is obviously no because you can see the nozzle tube is only half as long as it should be and doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the can as it should. So all I can think is that this was some type of display or sample can but I thought I would share with all of you... Enjoy... Notice the inside of what a fat seam looks like, almost like a zipper...

Another interesting can we flicked is one of my Jungle Greens. The can had leaked all over the side when using it years ago but I just left the can like that I kinda liked it as a display piece. When I moved the can was put in a crate and in storage and when I pulled it out of storage it looked like this... The top must have been leaking slowly and pushed the cap out of the can and is entombed in this glob of shit... Never seen anything like this before...
Also included a few group shots of some cans just laying on the ground...

That krylon coulda been a smaller can where they just put a cut krylon paper label on it......interesting on the green wet look.....do you know the history of where the can came from, that could be an idea. I have seen diplay cans at trade shows, but sometimes they dont have that top part at all. Could very well be a salesman sample....

^^^ The Wet Look I got at the recycle so no idea it's history BUT I have a right on red that if I recall had the same thing going on with it and had an equally clean label, next time i go to the storage I am gonna dig it out and check that one as well...

Keep in mind that lid colors can and did vary slightly due to the different manufacturers producing the different styles of lids. Lids also fade over time from fluorescent lights in stores and sunlight... I have 5 different can styles of Cascade Greens sitting here and not 2 of the lids match perfectly they are all slightly different even though I know that 2 of them came directly out of sealed cases...

I have seen the "mexican" krylon at discount spots for a while, but only satin black and clear. The rest are new to me. The one Canadian krylon i did get my hands on looked damn near the same, but with the canadian warning logos much smaller and no french text on it. I think i may still have it around here some where. I will post up if I can find it.

Could also be something similar to a "proof" in the printing biz...something someone had to sign off on packaging wise before going into mass production. I think your first hunch is right though, that it's some sort of sales sample.

So I turn the corner at this house clean out/estate sale/loads of crap type of sale in this old brick warehouse today. The only other time it was ever open was in early 2008. I'm sorry man. I read this and was thinking, "damn I bet I know.....". Seems like there's a serious disconnect between older collectors (meaning those who did this years ago) and people who are newer with it. Some people think they can get over on neophyte collectors presuming they don't know anything, and some people also are mostly over paint collecting but still have some stuff and either want too much for what they have, or want cans that are hard to find for basically nothing. Actually those last two characteristics seem to coexist often. And then there's the problem of scumbag graff writers being.... scumbag graff writers. All the more reason why serious paintheads are and should be their own circuit of people. You know enough real collectors at this point OG.

Cool. Yea, maybe i shouldnt of vented like that. but i felt like people should know to be more careful with certain people. Maybe its because im a rookie and dont know too much about the trading and collecting scene these days. Back when i collected paint in the 90s (for a bit) it was more about fun, and using dope colors on freights and walls. Not necessarily about selling or keeping the paint for money down the line. (Dont get me wrong, i sell my cans im not attatched to, today but back then it wasnt)
Now you have to deal with all sorts of individuals. People that collect, people that sell, people that use the paint, people that are jackasses, and people that are cool. Its crazy.
But i appreciate everybody showing me the way. And telling me the ins and outs of this. I dont want to come off like ive been collecting for years. Enough crying, i cant wait to to see what everybody has for summer.
I decided to still dig every day, but im going to post pictures of my digs once a month as compared to every day. More cans, more suprise, and more of keeping all you guys on the edge!!!! LOL.
Its gonna be a good summer.

Valspar is an extremely old company, and also one that has built themselves on a lot of horizontal growth over the past 50+ years. Like Krylon, they established a clear varnish and made their name on it, but easily 50 years prior to Krylon. I'd like to see what the oldest Valspar cans people have found are. Reading the company history, it would seem likely that they made paint in canisters just like the earliest Krylon. Any Valspar grenades or canisters?

Nothing great. Will probably just use and recycle the cans. No more throwing cans in the trash for me. Taking all to the metal scrap yard in exchange for probably 30 cents. Either way, save the earth, make some change.
Guessing the gold top on that Dutch Boy is probably one for the Murphy's Mart. Missed that.

Unfortunately that's not true. They used the blue over the years on certain motors, in fact in some years one engine size would be blue and other engine sizes would be orange. They also used black, green, red and even gray and yellow in some of their early engines. In the mid 70's to mid 80's most of their engines were blue... It's really not as rare as you think, you can even find new cans of it...

I know on the 75 Vettes they we're using blue, but what I meant was that it being a 1962 Blue can, is pretty rare, or at least I thought so. Obviously they have the new cans now a days... There are so many engine combo's with Chevy's but as far as I knew they didn't have blue engine blocks till 1950 and I think they went till 1955, with the "Blue Flame". Either way i'm probably wrong, when it comes to vintage Chevy, I'm a Ford guy.... :) To have a 62 Chevy Engine Blue can, is pretty cool if not for collectability either way, I'm just wondering if it was for guys restoring the blue flame motors back in 62? Where's TOTEM when you need an old school Chevy guy?
EPMDfan
03-30-2011, 03:37 PM
Vettes were a "hi perf" car so they used the orange... First year they used the "chevy blue" was in 1953 but they used a blue/gray color as far back as 1929.
Who needs Totem, you got an old school Chevy guy right here... ;)

Super-succesful digging today.
Went to Paris suburbs to grab some cans via an internet advertisement site, i originally go there to pick the cans of the 4th picture, and the guy found me the Dupli-color box after 10 minutes of asking the same question, again and again: "You got other things in the basement?". I was already happy.
On my way back i walked through the city, and found some dope old-school tags from Paris' finest bombers like Creez 156 or Sero MST. I had three hardware stores' adresses written on a piece of paper, but one was closed for years, and the two others were closed for lunch. I continued my visit of the city, bought a disposable cam, and shoot the 27 poses in 15 minutes! Dope tags...
As i was walking i arrived in front of a store, which really look old, and which was one of my two spots. I immediately smelled the old-school shit in it! A guy who was fixing the outdoor lights told me that the man has old-school cans, and that he would be happy to sell them to me, cause he was closing his store soon. I waited for half an hour, and then the man arrived. We walk in, and he told me to follow him. We went in the backstore, and BOOM! I was shocked! Dozens of Krylons, name on label, dope colors(Hot Pink, Baby Blue, Yellows, Jade, etc.), he asked me which one i wanted, i said "ALL!!!". He told me he had more in the basement, so we went down, and BOOM again, another dozens of Krylons and Beltons...
I had to call a cab in order to get me to the central station, stash was so heavy!
Enjoy the pictures.
Digging fever never stops!

So here's the story. Cleaned up a hill below a "historic" wall spot here today. (D., it's not the chairs spot as that's gone) Went with the intention of picking up scrap empties to take to be recycled, and to keep our water ways clean. I really thought I'd just find some newer cans but to my surprise, cans from the 90's were laying around too. This hill was no fun to traverse even with my painting pole/walking stick. The steep terrain and the full garbage bag I had to carry made for an interesting climb back up. Can anyone say 45 degree angle...? Anyway, these are what I found within about 15 minutes. I have about 1/4 of the area picked up. Will be going back to finish over the coming weeks.
Incidentally, the other day I took 3 garbage cans full of shakers and 2 garbage bags full of empty gallons, quarts and pints with lids to a scrap facility and took home $8.20 in return. I had to drill out all the shakers and while doing one of the last ones, I think my drill sparked because the next thing I knew I was engulfed in a fireball. No major damage, just some burnt arm hair, but I did set a garbage can full of empties on fire at the same time and upon trying to flip the g. can over to smother the fire, about 10 cans got away from me and were rolling all over my street pretending to be flame throwers. it was some experience. Lesson learned though it won't deter me from drilling from now on to recycle. Join me in being a good guy to the environment while making a little $$$ back. Or come and paint my permission wall with me and bring your empties and I'll do it for you.

Ehhhhh, wrong. Unseparated metal gets you very little money. When you separate according to type of metal the money is right. I should point out it's not about the money, it's about being responsible with trash. Yeah, so it took 3 garbage cans and 2 garbage bags full of empties to get $8.00. But since I did it for good 'ol mother nature, the money is incidental. Sort of like your ebay listings, you know, how there's no mention of contents or condition. Thanks for your thoughts, though I had to correct them as to not deter others from doing the responsible thing if they so choose.

That plasticote Avocado is the only Avo I've found. Oddly enough it was at a major (well known) closeout spot and the can had no gas in it. They try to sell cans with broken stems in the valves and cans that just plain don't work. Was happy with the find though. And that Imperial Green Utilac I just received thx to drunknucleus. valdi, can you explain the process for emptying cans and taking them to be scrapped? today i found cans i tossed in the woods next to a spot 8 yrs ago, then i saw your post and it made me think.
varivaldi
04-04-2011, 03:53 AM
Nocomply - Basically what you will want/need to do is get a power drill and a drill bit, preferably a small diameter bit, and drill a hole in the bottom of the can. By this I mean you will just drill enough in the center of the bottom of the can to let the gas escape. This is why a small bit is best. I have been using one, the only one I have, and it's too big so it often bursts thru the can and often shoots paint out too. Be careful when doing this because I pretty much engulfed myself in a rather large fireball the other day because the drill sparked and caught the gas on fire. Needless to say the garbage can, filled with hissing cans from gas escaping from them, also burst into flames and upon trying to flip the can over to smother the fire a few cans got away from me and began rolling down the street like mini flame throwers. It was definitely a learning experience.
Here's some guidelines to follow:
*Have a fire extinguisher handy or some water just in case.
*Wear eye protection as the drill can toss little metal pieces into your face.
*Wear old clothes.
*Do it in a place that can get dirty.
*Try to drill with the can pointing down so that when it starts emptying it doesn't spray all over your face.
*Let the paint fall into an empty box or garbage can with some dirt in it or sand or kitty litter. You'll throw that in the trash after it gets absorbed.
Wear a vapor respirator so you don't have to breathe anything in.
Any other suggestions welcomed.
With paint gallons/pints/quarts you can just empty the paint ( or use it to prime a wall) into a container with dirt or sand etc. and recycle them along with the aerosol cans. It's considered light tin so you will probably get an amount reflecting that metal type when and if they pay you. The price of metals fluctuates, like any other commodity, but I recently got 8 cents per pound for the cans and walked away with $8.20 for a little over 10 pounds of weight. Normal municipal recycling programs often do not take paint which is why I take it to a privately owned metal scrap facility. Been taking old car and boat and believe it or not batteries for Big Wheels riding cars for kids there too and getting $10.00 a piece for them. All to go back into my paint fund. Just started all of this myself and thus far I've made $49.00 in a week. Not too bad.
Hope this helps. Any other thoughts or questions feel free to contact me, anyone that is.
V.

Anything that has solvents or VOCs pretty much. All spray paint, carb cleaner, shit cars, brand new cars sitting the dealer lot have those stickers on em. California stated the labeling requirement around 86-87 time frame. Most companies just stuck those stickers on their products until they could do a label update or revision. Here is a link to a pretty good plain english explanation.

Sorry for being so primitive. I know of someone that would puncture cans and then use them for a fill. If you puncture just right you can get it to spry in a fan pattern....messy, but gets the job done....great for frozen or clogged valves....

I've been popping cans for years. Back when i lived on the east coast, it would be a bad idea to leave cans laying around at the walls. Kids would come down there, find a can with a couple squirts left, and before you know it a whole stretch of pieces are lined. We'd just pop all our empties and throw them over the wall after we finished painting, or carry them back in a plastic bag if we were at a legal spot.
I generally have a pocket knife on me that I use to pop cans. I lay the can on it's side, so all the paint is laying at the bottom, and carefully twist a small hole in the upper portion of the can. That way, when you stand it back up, paint isn't flying everywhere. It's pretty controlled, and I've gotten sprayed in the face maybe 2-3 times over the past 10 years. I've also used a spade drill bit, which works great because it will only drive into the can about a 1/4" before stopping. You can pop a can with just about anything. Broken boards with nails and screws, telephone poles with staples or nails in them, the edge of dumpsters and doors, chainlink fences, bolts, whatever has a corner or point.....
I think a drill would be much more dangerous, since once the hole is made, all the gas escapes at once. With a knife or awl, you can make a very small hole to start, and expand it if you want.

OD Khaki name label, if you are finding bordens on store shelves you should be grabbing them up. That is a rare occurence these days...
yeah, they still have a few on the shelf, i wanted to pick them up but i paid full price for the OD Khaki and the Safety Greens, and i didnt have enough cash on me. all of the other ones i was lucky enough to snag for a dollar each. i am definitely going back to get them though.
@ Kreaturesleeper - I can get you a color chart for those premium decor cans if you want for trade. Also, the Boulevard is a really nice blue to use. Have one or 2 left that I'm trying to use at some point.
.
Ill definitely take you up on that offer when I can get a few more colors and some duplicates. And yes the Boulevard is a great color. I had two but ended up using one, and was very pleased with it. I wish I could find another Apricot Brandy because it looks like it would be a great color.

Better learn about Ebay before you judge. You're losing an average of roughly 20% on fees alone. Is it worth it to sell cans for $1?? Lots of us bust our asses looking for paint and the shit is NOT easy to find. Just because it's on Ebay doesn't mean it fell into people's laps. It's a waste of time to sell cans for $5 through Ebay, deal direct if you want stuff for dirt cheap.

I agree. Feebay is an outright rip off. However, some collectors are beat artists as well. And a majority of people here know who they are, yet the community remains silent. I've been lucky dealing with pi and moet as well as the Ohio pipeline. I guess being close to NYC helps? We should rank sellers within our community and list them. Perhaps more cans would become available, which are and remain cost-prohibitive to list on eBay?

Don't pass up building materials auctions in your area. Nothing special, some user paint. About $5.00 for the pictured cans. Most of everything is full. Their future looks like this: take to wall, empty onto wall, puncture can, bring to scrap facility, give to them, leave with $ and the feeling of doing something unselfish. Ah to be a human.

Don't be so helpful with user can updates! Let the on-point people get something for their gas money running around checking the usual spots for sales.
That said, I'm already on top of (i.e. done with) the satin amber sale in my area, so I ain't too mad. Coverage on that color is disappointing, 2 coater, but certainly worth $1.24.

I'm not going to put anybody on blast. You know who you are. As for the girl Karen, pj said she use to buy on eBay under the name vintage paint or spray? Anyway, her man was a big skateboarder and they moved to California, shortly after pj brought out her collection. You guys should take notes on how to handle your business. Perhaps, maybe one day you'll have the collection equal to the status of pj's. Once again thanks dune. Pj said he has your addy, and he's going to lace you lovely. He takes care of righteous cats, without a doubt!
Sweet!!! So I get the hook ups too?!! NICE one!
Anyone else other than myself & Dune send over PJay's contact info? Good to hear you found some nice bits man - Enjoy! :)

"Inhibits rust"! Great! It's cool to see how the brands were biting each other, and tried to find ways to camouflage it.

Round 2 of my trip to the scrap yard. 93 pounds of tin (the spray paint cans and pints/gallons of wall paint and 2 rail spike barrels which were rusted thru the bottom and just a couple tuna and soup cans tossed in for good measure) at 6 cents a pound totaled $5.50. Yeah, i drilled them all again and managed to not engulf myself in another fireball thankfully. Again, it's not about the money, it's the idea of doing something good for the earth. Anyone else looking to do this, let me know. We can have a "contest" to see who can recycle the most. I'm a loser. But I know it. Enjoy.
