Yes that is my stock, and as far as finding shit in those stores, I found little to nothing. But they are great looking spots. Doing alot of digging you really begin to appreciate old hardware and paint stores, they are a rarity and a find in themselves.

they changed the formula in the early 90's around the time i was getting into graff, the newer stuff was ok but not a patch on the original from what i hear. ive been serching for it but we dont seem to have an abundance of 'ma and pa's' for paint digging.

Coral was in and out with thte barcode line of krylon. Only made by borden in its last few years. That would make it late 80's to about the beginning of 91, when sherman williams took over.

why you hating on krylon is a better question.

i like 'em better cause they don't try to play like they're "down with graffiti" and make "paint for artists". i'd use when i'm in europe but i won't buy into the hype. fuckin rusto, krylon and plasti-kote have been plenty good to me.

I assume its a pits. can where the cap and labels are same color. I dont know much about them, have only seen them a handful of times. I assume them to be around mid late 70's. As far as metal flake, that is a type of paint, so I dont know what you are talking about. Pictures are always the best way to get info out of us.

its funny you should bring the 70's show up, that has been somewhat of a joke amongst some of us... (being so addicted to looking for old cans you look at things like that, funny haha, ok...) but i have looked before and also thought i saw a newer can in there... maybe they realized this and updated their set or in actuality dated their set... you can also see old paint i believe in saturday night fever (i believe, slyle?) and other movies as well... in arachnaphobia they kill a spider w/ a krylon flame torch ( i forgot what type of can it was) joe or slyle i am drawing a blank what else is there out there...
we all need help... this hobby is like heroin...:D

slyle
08-27-2003, 11:22 PM
Yes paint junky you are correct. If you remeber in saturday night fever Tony Manero worked in a hardware store. Not only is there a few shots in old subways, but in the begining their is a shot of him talking to a customer in front of the first rusto rack. The rack dating to the early 60's late 50's is filled with 72-73 scottis, but they put things in front of the sign so you could not read that it was rust oleum. There also is a shot of a red devil poly rack, but with no sprays, same thing sign is covered as not to advertise for them. I have a copy of the dvd but cannot play it on the computer, or I would post stills of it.

paint junky
08-28-2003, 01:36 PM
word... i remember when you got that dvd, you were all psyched to see tony in tight pants working the dance floor and the paint shots were just a bonus! you were happier than a pig in shit that day! oh boy! lol hahaha just playing homie, lol...hit me up later... sneaker show tonite...CHALLAH!

any suggestions on cleaning cans without ruining the labels
both paper and metal????

slyle
12-05-2003, 01:16 AM
Yes be very careful....Clean paper labels with a slightly DAMP paper towel. I have used chemicals on paper labels, but test on small spot first, and never overdue it. Metal cans usually can be cleaned with anything, but excessive wiping has been known to ruin a can. Its all trial and error, and can types. You learn the hard way, but none the less you learn...

verse, i told you i got oicture cans for ya'... send me the trader flix holmes...
i am feeling the derustos... noice

when it comes to cleaning cans there are all types of methods... like slyle said it is all trial and error.
on metal cans: on older ones sometime the clearcoat that protects the printing on the can is worn away. you can see that can seems duller, the shiny coating is gone, these cans are really suceptable to being ruined by cleaning solvents, especially the black printing... proceed with caution...
on old red devils, the color name is stamped on afterwards. one swipe w/ a cleaner will take the color name/ingredients right off the can...
some caps back in the day were painted the can's color, these can be ruined with a cleaning as well...

paper: these are tricky... be very careful, sometimes these are best left dirty, but there are some "secret" methods to fixing these up, use your imagination...

there are some other tips and secrets but ya really gotta learn the hard way... we all have ruined nice oldies and learned...good luck

notchtops are circa 1978 cans, the avocado, if its a metal can (they often have the ozone printing on the side in blue) is roughly 1980. if it's a paper label it's like 1977. remember that these are informed estimates.

I do have a question though. A while back someone gave me a can of Seymour MRO paint.

the Pittsburgh, i'd guess was with regular male caps. they use a danvern/fan spray now. like most "big name" paints, their paint is quite good. not all that collectible but always fun to use.

Seymour is indeed the inventor of aerosol paint. they are one of the few independent spray paint companies left and they focus on making paint for custom jobs, technical uses and very specific technical jobs. for instance, i've seen subway workers using their Spruce line of paint. anyhow, they do sell many different products and there are places that carry some of the Seymour line. start looking. or if it's that difficult, just call up the company. you need to find small independent store, esp. paint stores and industrial supply outfits. and expect to pay "real" prices for the paint, not home depot prices.

MRO (Maintenance-Repair-Operations) General Use/Primer is made in 20oz spray cans. According to the company, it is made in:
5 safety colors (ROYGB)
3 ANSI grays
cascade green [which is NOT like the rusto, it's a medium green]
light blue
deep blue
tan
dark green
shiny aluminum
ryder yellow
new cat yellow
omaha orange

this is a smaller company so it's harder to tell what they make in aerosols and what they don't. but this stuff is out there, i'm going to check out one spot that carries it soon. i've used their Hi-Tech Magenta which was pretty good.

anyone have any input on methods they use to clean up their cans?

slyle
02-08-2004, 11:37 PM
Cleaning cans is all trial and error, I like to start with just warm watter on a paper towel and move up in strength of cleaners. Every can is different, and even the graphics on a can can be different. One part might not be harmed while another will, take your time, and start on t back if you have any doubts.

Glowing Red Orange is a FLURO. unless its a pre borden black label can, I doubt their will be much of a demand for it.

festival is a great color, i personaly pick it up from time to time to use, stashed one can of it away because eventually there will be no more, same thing goes with colors like terracotta (krylon), used 2 cans this weekend but they don't make that shit no more either, or indian spice AA's (great color)... so yeah, as of right now it doesn't hold a lot of weight in comparrison to regularly traded cans, but one day it will be, in the mean time pick it up to use, if u like it...

Ok so the weather is warming up, I am starting to see more garage sales in the paper (as opposed to none) and I got the software I needed to put pics from my camera to my comp. [img]http://photos.fotango.com/p/eba00226452f00000060.jpg'>
Here is a quick lesson, if you notice that this can has no warning on the bottom and some of the fonts are different colors, this is the first full size can that krylon issued, dating to late 50's. The later ones contain warnings and font color is different.

Antoher first issue full size can from the inventor of aerosol paint. Seymour. And another example of a nice can in a shitty color.

Derusto paper labels...
.I would be the man you want to talk to about that. I must make one thing clear, most derusto up to the mid 80's all came in paper labels. I have yet to see a painted can. I am looking for the old style bubble letters first, I still need a few colors of the 70's style ones that have a basic yellow and red outlined box on the front, but am not interested in the newer early 80's style that has a small 3 color rainbow shooting to the top. Let me know, I am running a paint special every can you give me you get at least two...

you might be able to use NY fats, but generally, they don't fit those cans. there are a few german caps that do fit them quite well, those are the only ones that I've found to be successful on Dap/Derusto cans. and german thins don't usually work, you really need the Euro style caps with the thinner stems- pink dots, blue dots, etc. DAP cans hark back to an era when many american manufacturers used cans with these narrow valves, that most "American" caps cannot function with.

If you are into spray paint collecting this book is not really for you. It is mostly comprised of pre aerosol items. There is a pic of one or two spray cans, and a few items from red devil and I think rust-oleum. The lady that wrote it I might ad is a bitch. She has been selling most of the items in the book on ebay. If you ask me that is kinda shady, even when she basically promised them to a friend of mine. Its like she created a market with the book, then turned aroudn and sold them all.

If you are looking for books wtih paint, roger gastman always puts cans in his books. Mass apeal and while you were sleeping have had articles dealing with paint. And dont forget saturday night fever, travolta worked in a hardware store and in the background they covered up a late 50's rust rack filled with scottis, and a red devil qt and pt rack. Thats all for now kiddies...

its not really a secret anymore.
There are alot more collectors out there than you would think.
but its not the collectors you have to worry about (new collectors are were the money is, in either selling buying or trade)
but a deticated edjamacated PAINT HUNTER.(like myself and other big wigs in this thread) These are the guys you worry about . theres is only so much vintage paint.

There is def. alot more older paint out there than you would think. With the amount of collectors out there all it takes is for one good score of a case or two of colors and everything gets screwed up. Given kids are picking up this hobby each and every day there is by far alot more paint out there than I think we can imagine. The fucked up thing of it all is that alot of it is getting thrown out and destroyed, used, and who knows what else....prime ex. bout a year or two ago this kid came upon probably one of the best paint finds I have ever heard of. For those that have been around awhile this is when the first mint green apeared. Now fucked up thing was this kid had no idea bout old paint, and what he had. He was actually using this paint, worst thing was some of the cans would not spray so they just decided to destroy them buy crushing them and throwing them against a wall. I know for a fact a few mint greens were used or destroyed, along with hot raspberry. For all I know icy grape and pineaple yellow could have been in that. This find he had was all 68-75 krylons along with some notch tops and name on cans. Now being un educated about this, some of the cans were able to be saved by going to the spot via a little investigating and get scooped up by someone who knew what to do with them. What he had not used, and had left was sold off on ebay, and I had the opportunity to purchase a few remaing cans at a pretty resonable price...all in all, if this was not kept a secret who knows what kind of cans could have been saved...there is still a few krylon cans out there that I have never seen or heard of. Pennant blue and peacock blue krylon , are prime examples, I know of only one of them out there, forget which one it is. Just recently some early examples of fool size krylons have poped up, something that I dont know of anyone seeing. There is also the elusive half size 68 krylons. White, Avo, Black, and some fluros are out there, but what about the hot pink, or burnt orange ones? Also early 60's farm and implement krylons with the funky farmer on the front, only seen ads with the cans, and never the cans themselves. Point is, I would rather more people know about this it gives us a better chance of finding some of these cans we may never see...and if who I think it is puts out a book, I aint buying it....but thats just me

Could not tell you much about that java brown. I think I have seen those cans at some discount stores, but not sure. Dont let a paper label and small top fool you. Alot of times it is just a cheaper way of packaging cans. Most of the times cans like that are made by larger companies like Seymour for smaller outfits. Look on the back and you might be able to decipher some infor....

Now that second cans is a nice one. In very good condition for its age. That is the second one I have seen in a few weeks. I believe gambles to have been an old department store. Now I know woolworth used to distribute paint called home cote, and that was made by red devil. I dont think there is anyconnection of the two, but most likely that too was made by a larger company. It is most likely at least late 50's or very early 60's....How do I know this? You can tell cause the front of the can is all virgin graphics. No warnings or anything, just pure product. I love those older cans, for that specific reason. Looks like it is a shorter can, not a full size one. Take a flic of the back of it if you can, so that whatever is written is legible, and I might be able to tell you more.

In 1925, the first Gamble-Skogmo store opened in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The second and third stores opened in Fargo and Grand Forks, North Dakota, respectively. Their business survived many financial crises, including the depression of the 1930s. Gamble was company president at Gamble-Skogmo from 1925-45 and was chairman of the board until his retirement in 1977. The company was acquired in 1980 by the California based Wickes Corporation.

I finally finished cleaning out this thread. Removed all dead links, old trade/wishlists, and useless chatter. All pertinent info and working images are still here. If you've posted any wish lists, you may want to repost, as I've most likely deleted the old one. If anyone has any problems in this thread, PM me and I'll take care of it ASAP.

On that note, here's some stuff I'm looking for. Mostly big ticket cans and such. The Icy and Pineapple are to replace cans I once had and since traded out. Any year/style can is fine, and I will consider paying for them.

Any Nybco Wet Look cans
Krylon Icy Grape
Krylon Pineapple Yellow
Krylon Mint Green
Krylon Surf Green
Krylon Pastel Pink (not pink pastel)
Krylon Puritan Grey
Krylon International Orange
Rusto Navy Grey (preferably '72-'73 scottie cans for all)
Rusto Orange
Rusto Fed Safety Purple
Rusto Fed Safety Blue
Rusto Fed Safety Green

Also looking for user cans of....
American Accents Indian Spice
American Accents Autumn Gold
Rusto Sandstone
Rusto Graystone
Rusto Adobe
Krylon Pacific Blue
Krylon Teal Blue
Krylon Violet
Krylon Orchard Green
Krylon Victorian Blue

I have plenty of stuff to trade. No cash deals please unless it's reasonable, I can't afford the prices. Slyle and Joe, holler at me when you read this, I'd like to touch base.

I really like Derusto paint. In recent years I think they've taken a turn for the worse, though. I got a couple cans of hi-heat black from Big Lots a week or two ago and the shit is watery garbage. Very surprising. The older stuff is pure gold, and the tins are excellent for painting canvases, if you're into that. I recall them making a really nice clover green lookalike. The only problem is that it takes forever to dry, like Rusto-leum.

The only problem is that it takes forever to dry, like Rusto-leum.

ohhh fuck yeah that clover green shit is the fucking shit. my entire liking of said brand was based around finding a random can of that shit (light green i believe) at this dollar store that is notorious for shit cans 95% of the time. i did a few painting with the tins over the summer , shit was nice , aslthough its a pain dealing with dry times (i found a hair dryer on low heat solves this quandry.

Funny story about those "American" cans with the eagle on em on the last page....

A friend of mine ordered some blubber color cans when they were first mentioned on the internets. The couple cans he eventually recieved had odd paper labels and said something like Promo cans? Or something weird like that. He noticed something odd about the cans, so he took the paper label off and took some thinner to the cans. Turned out the cans he was sent were really just those American Minty Green cans spray painted silver. Weird.

Harvey Wallbanger

If you want to paint with yellow, You've got a few options.
1. Rustoleum makes a couple of nice, thick yellows, but without a lot of variety.
2. Spring for some euro paint.
3. Start digging for some old Borden Krylon. Half the old shit I dig up is for painting with- pastel yellow and chrome yellow are two of my favorites. They used to be able to make paint way thicker and brighter, so a lot of old Bordens cover like rustoleum.

PushbuttonWarfare
05-16-2005, 04:24 PM
I still have chrome and pastel yellow bordens in my basement. I dont recall them covering like rusto at all. Yeah, maybe better than maize, or any of those new horrible yellows they have, but rusto? no sir. I've used a few old yellows and none of them are really -good-. Old Derusto Epoxy Canary Yellow, Duplicolor yellow-orange or bright yellow(i think that was what it was called....), Rusto lemon yellow, etc. etc. etc., all arent that good at all. I'm assuming it has mostly to do with lead and the ochre/pigment that yellow needs to be nice and thick. But I probably have really high standards of -good-, If it doesnt outline nice and opaque in one coat, its eh.
I'm not sure what ulovetohateme wants to use yellow for, if its bombing, pretty much any rusto yellow is going to get the job done - Stops Rust! Sunburst yellow, AA Summer Squash, Buttercup, Maple Sugar, or PT Sun Yellow. If you're using those colors to fill a piece with, you're looking at doing a couple coats to make sure its solid. If you're trying to get a nice clean outline on a piece, its pretty much euro-yellows, although a lot of those arent the greatest either(Montana light yellow for instance, could be thicker in my opinion.) I think it also depends on the shade of yellow, a pure yellow is probably going to be thinner than something thats a pukier/greener shade, or a more pastel shade.

thanks, yeah i've been using other yellows, but i just hate that runny effect, but i really like yellow color schemes... deffinately using it for bombs. i lke to outline with it, but my problem mostly is when i'm tryin to fill.

The only good yellows I know of is American Accents "Summer Squash", and a few other yellows by American Accents that I forget the name but they're all good money.

I was wondering if some one with any knowledge about rustoleum can help me. I was wondering what my cans may be worth. I have a Dunes Tan from 1967 it appears. It is full and in great shape. Today I picked up 2 cans or Almond Rusto they are full and it decent shape. I also have leather brown all of those appear to be from the late 80's. Anyone know what each can might be worth? thanks for your help
