Another spraint....gotta love those cans. They were distributed by pep boys auto part stores, not sure but will have to look into if they were affiliated with Plasti-Kote as that was one of the primary brands Pep-boys sold. Plasti-Kote also made a budget brand for pep boys called De Bois...

I have 4 different spray paint display racks for sale/trade. Asking $200 or best offer per rack.

1. First rack is a generic black metal rack that is encased in a cage to prevent the theft of spray paint. This rack is situated on casters which allow for easy mobility.

2 & 3 I have 2 krylon spray paint display racks. The krylon logo is displayed on the bottom of the racks. These racks also come with cages that can be used with the racks, or you can use the racks without the cages as seen in the picture.

4. Last is the larges rack of them all. This is a vintage Krylon/Sparvar display racks. Holds about 300 cans. From circa mid 70's.

I have pictures of them on the CMC facebook page. NYC, NJ, Philly, CT or Boston are all areas I could possibly deliver to. PM me and I can email you pics and discuss details.

how can you tell how old a can is? i know there are years printed on the cans but is that the actual year that specific can was produced or like the year the brand started to produce that line of paint

not all cans have year printed, like you said you can tell by the year on the can,and also you can tell when you see the can style, like old rusto if you see name on the can you know that that can is made from 1971-78,sw krylon with stripes on the bottom you know that that can style was made from 91-97 etc etc (years that i mentioned were just an example, not actual data for krylon and rusto can styles  ) or you can always ask someone in this topic,or visit www.capmatchescolor.com ;)

Yeah if you search the thread I think I have gone over it. Copyright years on cans are not always correct, and it is not an exact science. General rules of thumbs is if it has old 1/2 digit zip codes on can it is before 1963. Same goes for warning on front. Bar Codes on cans usually dates them to late 70's or later. (They first started barcodes in 1974) Lots of cans do have 2 or 4 digit dates on them that help pin them down a lil, rusto for the most part always dates their cans.

Thats is some really good user stock you found there. Osh is supposed to be real good, but I have not had any experience with it yet. (Its a west coast thing I guess) You might wanna save the scotti and some of the flat balls if that is your thing. You also have one of those "ribbed" champion cans. New can always found their design interesting, and you don't see them too often.

That life spray enamel copper is probably the most interesting can to me. Never seen that one before. It is probably as old as the flat black scotti if not older. Also that pactra imperial. Too bad it is missing a top, but I do know a guy who collects those.

HAL
01-06-2012, 03:34 AM
It's pretty hard to do with paper labels. You can wipe away a little bit of dirt and grime with a damp paper towel, but if you soak the paper, it will crinkle and look even worse. Wiping the paper with strong solvent is bad, because the printing ink seems to react very quickly.

Metal lithographed cans are pretty resilient, and you can remove a good bit of grease and dried paint before damaging the print. Rusto is the hardest to clean, while Krylon removes pretty readily with acetone or xylene. Most silver wipes off as quickly as a layer of dust with acetone. Sometimes I'd rather keep the overspray and leave the can as i found it.

yep, paper labels are pain in the ass lol,i did the same thing with them, towel and its done,i keep overspray which is not visible until you remove the cap,i keep it just to see the right color, since some cans don't matches with color on the cap + some dupli cans had color code and name under the cap so if you remove overspray you will remove the color name also. but once i had to remove paper label with color name which was on the cap,it used to look like a blank label which is burned from sun,i threw that cap in hot water and after 20 min i came to take it off and i was like "wtf!" color name stook there,it become visible i dont know how but label lost look of old paper which was yellow and now it was white with black letters which used to look like a fresh printed ones  weird shit tho

Paper labels are as old as the brand itself. Starting in the late 50's krylon had cans produced in paper label and metal lithograph cans. This was done all the way into the early 80's when all cans were lithograph, though occasionally you can find a late borden or early sherwin williams can in paper label.

By the color names you mention I assume you are refering to name on cans from the late 70's till the notch top style can in the early 80's. Some collectors prefer paper labels, while others like the glossy look of the lithograph cans. I for one think a real clean paper label is alot harder to find as opposed to a lithograph can. You can only clean a paper label so much, but lithos if they have no tarnish can be cleaned to the point where they look like they did when new.

You also have the debate of notch top or not. Seems mostly all collectors tend to prefer the rare notch top. A style of cap with a slot down the side. This is a unique cap that I have only seen on krylon and sparvar. European style cans also had this style cap but they were only similar in design and can easily be distinguished when compared to each other. These tend to bring the most money. I think most notch tops have a basic start value of $30 a can in good clean condition and they just go up from there. Name on cans without the notch tend to sell less.

Given the rarity of name on cans, I still see some newer cans barcodes and even flat ball sherwin williams selling for far more than they should. You can still find those in stores if you look, good luck finding any name on cans or older in a store these days, they pretty much don't exist anymore....hope this helps, sorry if it is a little long winded....

Not an easy task, especially if you are diggin for them. I don't know if anyone recently has found them in stores, usually you gotta dig by "other" means.... Being he is not in the US it must of cost a good buck or is it quid??? "it must of cost a good buck or is it quid?". Damn Slyle, was that a dig or an assumption? Perhaps all of those Big Faces that Sir Nick has/had doesn't qualify as a legit commodity to barter with? Even if Nick were to throw a steamer trunk of Pound notes across the pond, at the exchange rate, (then and now) he'd still be ahead of the game. Think about it. He acquired the bulk of his collection when the Pound was at $1.92 to one. Almost two to one. Thus, basically, every can he as was buying at the time was at a buy one get one free level. He's way ahead of the game.

I've stated it many of times, cash is the easiest thing to acquire on this earth. Whereas time remains the most invaluvable of all assets. Time digging, verses time acquiring cash? If one can spend less time acquiring large amounts of cash, verses spending loads of time chasing cans, why not? Oh, I am not discounting the thrill of the hunt either. Lord knows I've enjoyed many of my excursions. Merely stating that if you have the loot, and not the time why not? One should be grateful for the few that can afford the luxury of purchasing the few available high-end cans out there. For these individuals, enrich us by purchasing our cans thus, funding the next road trip or the next round of mailings.

As for the cans not being mint. You're right. They aren't. But nevertheless, a great grouping of a product line which never aged well from the outset.

I give props to Nick. he had the desire, the drive to pursue his passion. And has you stated, not an easy acquisition for somebody residing in the UK!

I wish you all luck with all of your passions. Cheers!

^^ I cosign that statement ..
Basically rarity and what people collect depends on what generation
They came up in..I am from Columbus Ohio home of the Borden, Sparvar Krylon..These brands hit
Close to home for me^..If I get a SW Krylon it's usually gonna get sold or used..
Some of the rare colors and brands are cool but I basically like Rusto and Krylon..
My goal is to get every color made of rusto and Krylon ever made..From the new to the old..

So depending on the person even box logos and 3D 5-balls have cans that are hard to find..
If I find something I don't collect on a dig I usually know who does and will trade to get other cans or sell to buy a hard to find color..

Even the Most serious collector has bought a hard to find can at one time or another..

If you say you found all those juicy colors on digs or racking youz lying..

Bump Cook my man got some ILL cans..I don't care how he got them they are his..they are displayed proper to educate the masses now..that's what it's really about...

From my european point of view, digging is the only way to get cans...i'm the only one collecting seriously here, there are some other guys, but with 100 cans collections...

I have almost all the "historic" Krylon colors, except Jungle Green, Icy Grape and the other tuff to find ones...I have digged every one of them, and i have emptied like 300 Krylon cans, to know what it was like to paint with 70's cans, like old-school heads. And i still have like 300 more to empty...

I can find like one old can a month on Ebay or other sites. And i don't pay more than 10euros for one can.

I have like 1500 cans, color-charts, key-rings, posters, racks, signs, ads, even ties and t-shirts!

Some of us here are doing a great job, sharing knowledge and encourage each other to go digging for history and memory.

I'd like to have news from OG5Ball, who was seriously getting cans!

And P-Jay i'd like to know if i got nabbed from you and your french friends, cause i never had news of the Pastel Yellow Name on can french Krylon box i mailed you. Thanks for being honest, i never had beef with you but with somebody that barely knows you.

So I was reading about this Evapo Rust in a trade magazine. It got some good reviews, so I went and picked up a can to try out on a few rusty cans I had laying aroud.

Before....

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/1497/dsc0191go.jpg

No scrubbing or anything, just wiped off with paper towel when I was done. Not bad, obviously the rust removed the shiny coating so the rings are still tarnished. Overall I was happy with the item, and worked better than using steal wool which tends to make it not look right....

Most of the rust staining on the front picture probably woulda came off with a good cleaning, but the rims and the seam would have needed something stronger. Overall pretty happy with how the product worked, now I am trying it on a few other cans. One bottle cost about $9 but wonder how many times I can use it till it wil not work anymore. You have to submerge the cans in it anywhere from 30 mins to overnight. 30 mins showed improvement, but overnight worked best.

There is alot of custom rusto colors that no one has ever seen. That is a really nice one. Off the top of my head in the older style label Flamebeau Red and Eastern Brown are two and I know I have seen one or two more. Certainly rare and probably well worth whatever the reserve is.

HAL
01-21-2012, 10:32 AM
Be careful with that Evapo-Rust or any other rust removers. If the can is extremely decayed, the rust might be the only thing holding the pressure in the can. The way that type of cleaner works is by converting the oxygen out of the rust. Just a caveat that you might wind up with a leaker after letting it sit overnight.

I've used CLR quite a bit in the past, and if you let it soak long enough, it will eat the rust off a 100 year old rail spike. I found a bunch of great ones on a trip to Cape Cod a few years ago. The old spikes there were extremely rusty. My guess is from the close proximity of the ocean and salty, sandy soil. Either way, i pulled the spikes out of a week long CLR bath and they were eroded all the way down to the clean metal. Amazing stuff.

The cap should not have a lip, looks like the wrong top it also looks like a flat top on a gloss black can. Name on can cans are not rare but there are certain colors like any year that are harder to come by than others.

I've noticed there are several name on can designs, though. Color code over top the name, color code to the side of the name. Any info on how many different designs there were, and what years they ran?
I did see something earlier on in this thread about other companies making cans for Krylon.

Keep an eye out on the next Infamous Magazine issue. Me and the rest of the CMC crew have a two page spread this time around where we break down all the major design changes Krylon has been through.

What you are talking about would be the 66/68 krylon design versus the mid 70's name on can. You will notice when the color number is above the name the can will say "Spray Paint" as opposed to "Interior/Exterior Enamel". From the late 60's to early 80's the 5ball logo krylons were all made in different Name on Can styles. Though collectors routinley refer to "Name on Cans" as the later ones. If the can has the notch style cap we refer to them as "Notch Tops" which are just Name On Cans with the rare notch style cap.

So many subtle differences with all these cans I could go on forever, and new variations are always popling up....

02-24-2012, 01:45 PM
I am gonna go with 67.....metal or plastic top on that one? This is the second time I have seen a can like that. I wanna say the other one I saw was an avocado. Add this one up with other strange variations. Pre-Borden cans with full size tops (I have even seen pre borden can designs with full tops, but no borden logo displayed in borden ads), this 66-68 variation, fat seam name on cans, Notch tops with ing labels on the cap, ing labels and name labels on same cap and barcode top sherwin williams cans. Whoever said paint companies had to follow the rules....

drunknucleus
02-24-2012, 03:19 PM
I was going to say 1967 as well, because it has both traits of 66s & 68s.if I had to pick one of 66 or 68 I'd say 68. My reasoning would be, Perhaps krylon was adding hot pink to the line so they made that can before other colors with names that were not changed or new colors, because they had stock already, and then Krylon settled on the 68 style as we now know it. So in short I agree with both slyle and the description of the can on eBay.

Mid 50's. The copper on the end is the newest. That was the same design when they started making the "normal" size can. Early 50's they had almost no colors. Started with clear, then they had aluminum white and black. I believe these are the first style cans when they introduced color lines. All the earlier cans you find are normally just clear....

I recently found this can of Glossy White, and in my haste thought "Krylon no lid; user paint". When I got home and realized it would be worth finding a lid, I checked my Hot Pink lid for a reference and went back. There was a white lid in the bottom of the box, no words, no screwdriver slot, so I thought for sure it was a match. But the lid doesn't look exactly like that of my Hot Pink. Is this the incorrect lid for my 68 Glossy White?

Can on the right is a fat seam 13 oz, which I'm pretty certain is older.
When did Krylon switch from 13oz to 12, fat seam to skinny?
I don't know much about dates besides '68 cans.

Hey guys & gals. This past weekend, I returned from the US's largest coin-op machine and advertising trade show & collector's show in Saint Charles Il. While there, I meet a few sellers who had/claim to have access to that which we all on this forum seek and desire: Vintage spray paint and it's related items.

Upon my introductions, and presentations of my color post cards, and fold out flyers etc., the respective vendors were all shocked to be in the presence of somebody who actually collected "spray paint". Now these same vendors, all related the story of the mountains of spray paint (the same cans depicted on flyers) which they repeatedly threw away in the past, upon sight.

These same "shocked" vendors, had for sale various paint company related clocks, displays and signage as well as other wares on their respective tables as we spoke. But no actual spray paint, which would've been worth more than the items which they dragged across the US to St. Charles.

Thus, in order to stem the perpetual desecration and destruction of the few sought -after cans which remain undiscovered out there, I had to educate these vendors as to their worth in a collectors society.

While attempting to educate each vendor, there first question almost always is, "how much am I willing to pay for each can"? A fairly easy question to side step, by replying, it depends on the color as well as it's condition. You could name a high price for a nonexistent color, in order to entice them to simply start looking for cans. After all, no person is going to troll through and drag home garbage for a few dollars a can. One must wave the proverbial carrot-on-a-stck before these vendors in order to get them to recalibrate their respective hunting/search habits. Once they call with the details of the lode, it is then which one could negotiate a value for the lot.

However, due to recent behavior by some within our community, it is becoming harder to get a lode at "wholesale prices" anymore.

What? You're saying? Let me explain. During the aforementioned conversations last week, while speaking to a group of interested potential can/sources recruits, a few were conducting searches on ebay in my presence for cans being sold. And lo and behold they come across the active auction of my recently acquired as well as SNIPED Ferguson Gray big face! And what did they see? The same year(s) big faces presently sought-after with it currently bidding up to $115.00 with numerous bids and three days LEFT on the USED item auction. What does that tell a prospective seller? They go Hmmm... I just may have something worth more here. Let me, hold back/out. Screw selling it "wholesale" to this guy before me. I'll take my chances on Ebay.

Which brings me to my final point. People, why would you continue to bid up an item with days left on it? Why not simply click "watch this item" and come back and try to snipe it in the final seconds, like most serious buyers do in the first place? Why continue to throw NUMEROUS as well as INFLATED bids, knowing

1. That's not what the final selling price will be.

2. You're only showing the sellers as well other potential sellers that they have "gold" in their hands

3. People conducting searches will see these inflated prices, due to the time left remaining on the auction.

4. Most bidding don't have a realistic chance of winning an auction of a rare can.

5. Sellers/finders only know what they see, not know what color is what or worth more etc.

Hence, those of you who are working with budget constraints (which most email and state so), need to
rethink/visit your bidding practices on Ebay. For, should you come across your own motherlode. Chances are, that perspective seller will be conducting an Ebay search themselves. And once that happens, chances are your opportunity to get it wholesale will evaporate before you. And you'll have yourself to blame.
