The utilac made by benjamin moore not that old, maybe 80's-90's they kept that can design for awhile. Probably a fan tip if I am right. They made parrot green which was a watery jungle green type color, not a bad substitue for jungle, and usually people are more williing to give up those cans.
The Color creations is a mid 90's most likely 93-94 paint that was distributed at wal mart. My neck of the woods at the time only had one walmart about a half hour away. We would make trips out there just for one color in particular. The whole color creations line was similar to alot of krylon pastels that came out at that time, rose, mauve, jade green color, a dark teal similar to rusto teal, ivory and a few others. There was one color in that line that is one of my favorite all time colors. Cobalt Blue, not the thickest but a real rich blue, with a purple shade to it. At the time I had never seen a color even come close to it by an american company, I am sure some of your yuppie paint has something like that, but at the time it was worth the trip just to pick up that one color. Would post some pics, but fotango is not working and I have yet to sign up for a new picture server. There is pics on contains lead though...
yea it does have a fan cap and its a female one too which i thought was interesting
and this color creations color is really great like you said thanks man

Hey Slyle since you refused to follow up on your own accusation about Sopranoss. Let's get into some gossip about you and him (for those not in the know). I heard your bitch ass shit a load in your pants at a NJ dump site when he was going to smack your ass up for grabbing a can of paint?
I also heard that you ratted out pj to various officals trying to get him barred from the sites? And according to the story I heard about the dump, it was pj who prevented Sopranoss my breaking you in half? Some payback you bestow upon pj, ratting him out?
Now, the above I'm in the know about. However, as an Ebay bidder I would like to know people's A/K/A's.
Afterall, you put the rumor out there to begin with. Be a man and back up what you represent.
As for my mere "six post" here. I have a life as well as expenses to tend . I don't still live at home with my dad like you.

09-15-2006, 08:41 PM
Hey Smart,
Truth be told, I "heard" it directly from Sopranoss when I sold him the big faces. That was after I asked him about the alledged other Ebay names, since Slyle refuses to follow up on his claims. Therefore, it hardly qualifies as gossip. But why does it appear that you're indirectly defending Slyle, by not call him out on the Sopranoss ebay name(s) allegations? Hmmm....
I was contacted by Sopranoss about the big faces when I posted here that I have them. Before I sold them to Sopranoss I was told to contact pj. Which I did. He declined because he had those cans and they weren't full. Didn't realized they had to be full to be worth something? Anyway, I sure one could email pj, and verify what Sopranoss stated concerning Slyle? How many people does it take to confirm an occurance in order to have it deemed the truth?
Please let us know. Thanks.
Smart
09-16-2006, 05:44 AM
I'm not defending anyone, Slyle can fight his own fights where I'm concerned, I don't know dude from Adam. Apparently you've nominated yourself to fight for Sopranoss but I'm just saying that you want to quote some post from at least a year ago and start some ruckus that could be handled through Email or PMs or in person. I don't really care to email PJ and ask about what Sopranoss is saying because, way I feel, if either of them was really bent about it they could be on here saying it themselves. Why do I have to contact all these people to be justified in telling you not to pollute this thread with stuff that you can't prove and are basically a 3rd party to? You might be right but..? Let's just stick to talking about the vintage cans.

what about the few colors rustoleum and painters touch discontinued in like 03/04? before any of the new ones came out?
would those be worth money in like 15 years?
i had a couple not completely full woodsavers, one was a real tight slate blue, but my dad threw them all out when we moved...
the pretty pink that painters touch discontinued a short while ago, i have alot of those still untouched, and one pewter grey (did that get disconinued?) stops rust from 2003.
no really good old stuff though. maybe ill hold on to them for a long time

if you hold onto stuff, there's no way of knowing what it'll be worth.
the woodsavers are dope but up until a few years ago, they were easy to find. use that paint if you have enough, but shake it up like crazy first. oh, and they never made a slate blue. do you mean deep blue? that was the only blue in the woodsaver line. interesting story about why that paint failed as a product.
travis bickle- it's time you shut the fuck up, this is a public forum and you're fighting battles (and airing shit out) that you know nothing about. if you want the real world you had better go and tell slyle that shit to his face and you'll see what happens. collecting isn't fucking thug bullshit and backstabbing and you're bringing that shit here straight from the source. if you don't know shit, then don't say shit.

Why did the DEEP BLUE fail as a product?
Deep Sky Blue (sorry, forgot the full name before) and all the other Woodsaver colors failed for a few reasons, all of which i've heard from people in the industry. Firstly, it's a messy thing for a company known for metal coatings, that has RUST in their name, to sell a paint that's for wood. Rust-oleum historically was not known for taking big chances on new colors and concepts that don't succeed-- think about (Mandarin) Orange, Coral Pink, Speedy Dry colors, and the Fed Colors, none of which lasted that long in the Stops Rust line. Do a lot of people need to paint wood Cherry Red? The late 1980s were a time when Rusto tried several different concepts, only to have most of them fade away quick-- Metalsaver or Auto Panel anyone? I've met many store-owners who were totally frustrated with the Woodsaver product since it sat in the stores so long, and like most Rusto products was NOT cheap at the wholesale rate. A lot of people gave it to us for free, and they knew it was good paint. The fact that it clogs easy if you don't shake it very well doesn't help either.
Secondly, after they discontinued the spray paint, which only has 1988 production year printed on the cans, Rusto tried to sell it only in gallons, for use on outdoor wood like decks and siding. Bbbbut, wait! There's one problem. Woodsaver was made with Teflon coating in the formula. Paint your deck, it rains a little bit, and now it's fucking treacherous to walk upon. Several people have quoted me the liability factor in this, and Rusto discontinued the product rather quickly. The last time I checked, Woodsaver was mentioned in the Rust-oleum FAQ on their site, saying that it is no longer made. Looks like they want to distance themselves from it as much as possible.
On the other hand, it is excellent paint for most surfaces. The Country Cream is absolutely disgustingly good and seems to even have a thick, creamy quality. Ash Gray, Deep Sky Blue, Redwood, Cherry Red, Birch White, Acorn Brown and Ebony Black are all excellent covering, very thick paints. The Gray Primer and the Evergreen were both decent on the few times I've tried them-- Evergreen is pretty tough to find, and Sandalwood Tan (which collectors will know is an old 70s color brought back from the dead --btw, the OG Sandalwood is a fine collectable that ALSO lasted about 3 years max in the 70s) is decent but runs a bit and is not as good as the rest of the line. I have not used the Clear. There were these 12 kinds of spray and a few colors were made only in gallon.
The only reservation I have is that it's hard to use with a thin cap (next to impossible actually) and a Rusto fat is best. It is heavy paint to be sure, and can sag more than the heaviest Stops Rust if you're not careful. But shake it a LOT, and shake while using. I have found a few cans of late losing their pressure, which is pretty unusual for Rusto and cans that aren't THAT old-- to me anyways.
Enjoy.

JOE I have a question. What year did KRYLON start using the black dot.And why?
imported_joewelcome
10-04-2006, 04:18 AM
the black dot, it would seem logical, was to cover up the price on the original priced 1968 cans. if you've ever cleaned up cans, you can tell that you can take off the black dot pretty easily with solvent (which doesn't usually take off the price underneath). think about it- Borden orders cans from an steel manufacturer in bulk, then realizes they need to change the price on cans that haven't yet been used. i bet that Borden stamped the priced cans themselves so as to use up the cans they had. this is why there are 1968 cans with price, with blackdot over price, and with no price nor dot at all. i have an OD Khaki somewhere with a paperlabel over the black dot can.
i would estimate, since Krylon dating is largely estimation, that the black dot cans came out around 70/71. Just because it says 1968 doesn't mean it was made then. That can style was made until 1973-- one of the few dates that IS clear.

it's a custom made Rustoleum color for Coca-Cola. I've heard of Coca-Cola Red, Black, and White. Don't know when this can was made, but it's safe to place it in the late 80s, as it's the same label as the Post Purple and UP Yellow which made the rounds big after appearing en masse in stores. Rusto made loads of paint for different people, and some of it was put into spray cans. If you had the loot, you could easily hire them to fill spray cans with whatever vintage color they used to make (though it'd likely be new formulas). Custom colors are basically impossible to track, as there's been many that Rusto has made for different companies over the years. As far as I know, there's been 2 styles of can that they've made custom paint in, a 70s one and an 80s. They are both paper labels, which is very unusual for Rusto.

i mean, fresh as fuck son!
That color is pretty fresh, came up on a can with no top, thick ass paint and almost identical match to rusto's cascade green. The apple green is hot too, had a spot with a grip of them, we grabbed a few of each color but when we returned a few months later the stingy korean guy would not let us in the back to grab the rest. Wish we took it all on our first trip, but it's ok we stole all the old color charts right out of his filing cabinet....Joe remembers that, it was there he seen it....

Can't let our secrets out, but start diggin in the obvious spots ebay, grandpas garage, independent hardware stores, its alot of leg work, but a good find can set you up to trade stuff with other collectors.
I am currently looking for 66-67 Krylons with borden scripts (dune I seen that baby blue) Avocados, Bernzomatic, 1/2 size krylon from late 60's, and early pre-borden krylon cans, along with any grenade cans. Hit me up with trades.

One exists that I know of, and that is it. I have yet to see any ads or documentation for one. Dune where are some of your collection photos?????

slyle
11-04-2006, 12:23 AM
Actually that is a case fresh cascade green. The 1978 rusto line holds all the old color names and color numbers from the scotti era. In the transition of changing can styles you will sometimes see the older plain style caps as well as the printed caps. Paint companies don't have a set of rules they work by, they are very incosistent. I guess that explains why some 59-60 rusto's have fuil metal tops and some small ones. That is also why some of your older krylons came in paper labels and others were lithographed cans. Also why I have seen some krylon litho cans get paper labeled right over the can (Gold label lemans lime gold over its old color name a 5 ball luminous lime or even 66 borden script cans with pre borden cans under neath and so on). Krylon even had notch tops that came with ing. labels on the caps. All these examples have come from cans off of store shelves and out of freshly opened cases.

Hmmm, you know what, i was always wondering if that was actually PJ selling cans on the bay cuz his name is PJ and he usually slangs really old shit, I once seen him throw a wetlook can on there. Of course it cud jus be someone who uses his name and jus happens to have a shit load of vintage paint, hmm, o well, btw I have a few Sher. Ahh dune got the good copy of enamalized, I am stuck with the alternate cover of just caps....Sticking with the subject of anomalies some older krylon cans from the 68 era would take a lithographed can of the same color and paper label over them, for no obvious reason. I seen examples of white stencil in paper labels that all had school bus yellow cans under them. You can probably blame it on the companies that supplied the cans to krylon, or maybe an error in production of a color being placed in a wrong can. Instead of writing off the whole batch and taking a loss they would just put the correct label on a can. Shit like this can go on and on and on and on....

Hey Dune may I ask you a question? Where did you get that signed PJ Red Devil can from? Did you get it from SEEN's site? I ask, because I recently heard that Pj's wife gave birth to twins and since they needed his paint display room for the babies that she ordered him to get rid of the excess cans. And as a result he signed or pieced on all the cans that he got rid of in order to see where they (the cans) may wind up later. I heard that SEEN grab a bulk of them for some future art projects? And we're talking in excess of 150 cans here. Would be happy if you would enlighten us as to where I may obtain a few of the cans. Thanks.

Dune, Thanks I did! I misspoke before. Pj gave SEEN 150 of those cans for his birthday last month. After seeing them, SEEN grabbed the others that Pj had to get rid of. I guess SEEN will be doing alot of painting with them? I know I'll be checking seenworld.com on the regular. I already emailed the site asking about the cans, even the empty ones after Seen uses them. I'll keep you posted, as I don't know how to send a private message.

It all depends on age condition and color, but as far as I am concerned they have always sold alot less then they are really worth. Poor distribution and not easy to find, few have found them on store shelves, most are from other means....

mediterranean teal, such a dope color.
copped 12 cans for a dollar a piece last week, many of which have never been sprayed, the newest were two 1999 cans of american accents.
most likely they will all get used though.

Hmmm, just checked did not see them on there, even on closed auctions. There is this guy in France that was and still is buying large amounts of cans to anyone that will ship them over there. I shipped him a huge box that cost about $100 to ship. It took a long time to get there so the fool complained to paypal, and they gave him a partial refund out of my money, so I stopped shipping there.

I sold some magazines to someone in France and the person did the same thing. Probably the same guy. I noticed he was buying old cans off of ebay as well. He got a full refund from paypal. He wants you to ship it slow boat but doesn't want to wait. Sounds like 1/2 a hustle to me.

it's a custom made Rustoleum color for Coca-Cola. They are both paper labels, which is very unusual for Rusto.
i saw coca cola black in a chain discount store about two years ago.

Well the first VHT is chrysler blue, working on cars, I know that green top is NOT chrysler blue. The rusto can is interesting, I have seen cans that did not have the colors on the logo line up and stuff, but never print a can without a color, so much for quality control. What is that color for the vinyl spay??? Oh and you got me with the metro tone, never seen that before, are they both olive drab?<p>
On a side note, I was at a trade show this weekend, I seen some of the new krylon colors coming out. Bringing back some ILL color names. Gum Drop, Peekaboo Blue, Tottaly Tangerine, Ivy Leaf (looks like and avocado) and one more that looked like a slightly darker shade of Pastel Aqua, I have to find the chart....

That smokes ass,
im in the reversal situation.
I scored those plasti grenades - magic spray caps etc - so glad to score them after a long time waiting for them to surface ,a friend had them sent to someome in nyork to assist with shipping as they wouldnt ship direct to Australia. - to me they are a beautiful resemblence of early aerosols.
Problem - the guy in ny has not dealed with it at all, and im getting concerned. He does not write but is a well respected artist. Hopefully it will resolve as i know he is busy.
I cant understand why someone from overseas would burn u guys for all the effort you have given them.
i suppose that the difference bettween people.

Hmmm, little confused with your post, but it seems you need to talk more with the people you are dealing with. Looks like you got the cans off the same guy I did out of Michigan. Who is supposed to send them to you, and how long ago. Like I said I sent cans US to Paris and it took almost two months, and I got shafted on the deal....

01-10-2007, 07:06 AM
all good from Jack who sent them, he couldnt send o/s so a friend had them sent to their friends in brooklyn. Now just waiting for a friend of a friend to send them, i know they are still there as there has been little com between the 2 friends. frustrating but i had a chance to get them thru this method with no contacts reliable in the states. Plastikote played a major role in my early years of writing, and my love of packaging has me regretting all the picture labels i lost. grenades......

yep me too, such iconic items- best i get less romantic about paint! I love the idea of catalogs and chips as they tell another story. So fascinated by this side of products from the 50s, Australia feels a world away .
The signage and packaging obviously makes as much an impression as the cans. anyway to me they do

Here are some very interesting oddity cans of paint. Lets start from the left. Klenk's Epoxy is slamming with the thickness & coverage. Has a great smell to it too. Only problem is the valve system which doesnt except standard fat caps. The stock cap though itself writes a bit fatter then the average Rusto or Krylon caps.
Any brand of Epoxy paint is usually good , so I recommmend if you see the Trutone Epoxy pick it up as well. Klenks who is the major brand for Epoxy based paint usually comes in Almond , Avacado , Harvest Wheat, Harvest Yellow & Toast. The Avacado is badass, & so are the Harvest colors. Definately quality shit that runs along side with old Rusto.
Ok for the Hue Grey I never used it. Found it along with a case of old , old, old school 60's Krylon OD Khak in an old building a friend was buying.
Rusto Flourescent Yellow. Just an interesting Rusto oddity from the late 80's. THe Avcado in the pic...see Epoxy above. Growco Purple...Now this is the ill shit.
Made in California in the late 80's. Talk to the old LA graff vets about this shit. Sssssslammming. One of the best purples ever and thick like old Rusto too.
Craftworks Dolphin Blue...used to find these in some art & craft stores in the 80's. Made by Illinois Bronze company. Same company that made Wet Look & Wet Paint. Very solid Blue. Dont remember what the rest of the colors were. Good shit however
