Here are some very interesting oddity cans of paint. Lets start from the left. Klenk's Epoxy is slamming with the thickness & coverage. Has a great smell to it too. Only problem is the valve system which doesnt except standard fat caps. The stock cap though itself writes a bit fatter then the average Rusto or Krylon caps.
Any brand of Epoxy paint is usually good , so I recommmend if you see the Trutone Epoxy pick it up as well. Klenks who is the major brand for Epoxy based paint usually comes in Almond , Avacado , Harvest Wheat, Harvest Yellow & Toast. The Avacado is badass, & so are the Harvest colors. Definately quality shit that runs along side with old Rusto.
Ok for the Hue Grey I never used it. Found it along with a case of old , old, old school 60's Krylon OD Khak in an old building a friend was buying.
Rusto Flourescent Yellow. Just an interesting Rusto oddity from the late 80's. THe Avcado in the pic...see Epoxy above. Growco Purple...Now this is the ill shit.
Made in California in the late 80's. Talk to the old LA graff vets about this shit. Sssssslammming. One of the best purples ever and thick like old Rusto too.
Craftworks Dolphin Blue...used to find these in some art & craft stores in the 80's. Made by Illinois Bronze company. Same company that made Wet Look & Wet Paint. Very solid Blue. Dont remember what the rest of the colors were. Good shit however

Ahh I didnt know that Wet Look was a separate brand. I haven't seen a can of that in twenty something years. Always thought Wet Paint & Wet Look were the same company.

Believe it or not I dont dig for old paint. Most of the above was racked in the 80's except for the Growco which I traded paint for a very , very long time ago & the Hue which I found. I dont remember the Colorworks line much but I do remember racking that up in Micheals Craft & Hobibes. They didnt carry Rusto or Krylon at the time. Not sure what brands they carry now. Anyway I used that Dolphin Blue a few times way back then and it worked quite well.

You talking about the Nybco Sprite Green, I have a couple cans of that now...and Benjamin Moore Had Their Utilac Parrot Green which was not that bad either I know one spot where I used to cop cans of that...

Yeah spruce made them too, actually alot of can companies made lime greens, I know even KMART had their own lime green. Some older brands like Spray0namel also had lime greens, along with wet look and wet paint. Red Devil had a lime, and rusto had a lime in their speedy dry lime. I think Metal Man Ed has a pretty good collection of limes, I know he was collecting them a few years ago.

A question for you old school paint junkies. I have several old Rusto Pound cans from late 80's. None of them work , and none of them had been ever used before. What would be the cause of them not working. I have much older Rustos then this that still work. Also one can had some clear brownish silicion-y looking stuff leaking out.

Yeah I get this alot with some older cans. It is as if the solvents in the tube have dried up, because the can still has pressure but nothing sprays. One thing you can try is a "blaster" cap. You can use the old style wd-40 cap, or take a stock cap, pull out the center piece and cut the notch on the stem so it can allow the most amount of paint to spray out. Sometimes when paint hardens in the valve this larger opening and free flowing cap will help clear it out. If all else fails there is always ebay.....

I tried using the can it would not spray so I put it back on the shelf and then it leaked and hardened like that. You would be suprised how many times we are hanging out and people try to light it thinking its a candle...

That is a Zynolyte Epoxy "Straight Outa Compton". Paint is real thick, I have heard lots of good things about that stuff. I found a can of harvest wheat out in the midwest and pointed out to the hardware store guy how it was made in compton. He said "thats where they paint all those rail cars." Ignorance is a great thing. I have a pink and an orange martin paint, from what I told that was a pretty big chain at one point with stores in Jersey too.

Late 50's. That is the second style of full size cans krylon came out with after "grenade" cans. Nice can, just a shame that does not look like the original cap. It should be a cap painted the same color as the can.

Avo is an ill color that I was able to catch the tail end of when it was still available. I think color place was sold only in walmarts. One of my favorite all time colors was made by them. Cobalt Blue sort of a blue purple tint to it. They had a bunch of your pastel colors too like mauve, a light pink, the teal, a jade green color and a few others. Mostly similar to the pastel colors krylon introduced in the late 80's early 90's. Not the best paint out there, but very comprable to krylon.

Brands of Spray-Paint

Itallic=(mostly old school brands, that dont exist any longer)

Auto K......................................very thick paint, vibrant colours, used a lot in the old days, quite hard to find nowadays
Belton.......................................good colours of paint, old skool writers used mainly pink or purples
Buntlack...................................the preferred paint by old skoolers, once the best paint you could get, now watery & expensive at £15 per can
Car plan....................................the paint everyone has used at least once in the old days, was always considered sub-standard
Cycle Style............................... ..a range Halfords brought out in 1990, only had 2 good colours, pink & purple, but was good paint
Dupli Color.................................this was usually the last resort if you couldnt find anything else, very substandard cheap paint
Halfords....................................a modern-day replacement of car plans, not much better than its pre-decessor
Home Style............................... .the staple diet for every old skool writer, this was the most racked brand of paint ever!
thousand upon thousand of these cans would have been used on trains during the '80's & '90's
Hycote......................................a very good brand of paint in small sized tins, still highly rated, very good colours
Isoflex...................................... a gutter repair rubber based spray, that can be used to outline a piece
Japlac........................................a good replacement for smoothrite - easily racked from B&Q came in red white and black
Krylon...................................... england had a version of this paint, not as good as the U.S., but the black was favoured for trains
Marabu.................................... a little-known brand of Buntlack, but in smaller cans, nice colours, but drippy as hell
Montana...................................the ready made for graff paint, that has been around a couple of years
Multona....................................a German brand of paint, very rare nowadays, came in nice pastel shades (used by Shine & Quest)
Odds & Ends.............................miniscule cans of paint, that appeared in the mid 90's, still around today
Radiator Enamel........................used to be a last resort, in off white colours, nowadays they have a very nice chrome
Rubber Duck...............................legendary brand of spray paint that was actually meant for fixing leaking pipes, made of asphalt mastic it would leave a permanent stain on a train, bizzarely Woolworths used to stock them
Rust Not....................................part of Plasticotes old range, some nice colours
Smoothrite.................................the mainstay of every english writers pallette, this was not only the first choice, but the only choice of paint to outline a piece in, sadly in 1992 the makers changed the formula to a bog standard watery mixture
Sparvar....................................dutch brand of spray paint, usually racked by london writers on trips abroad and brought back to london, the range of colours was vast, and included a lot of muted pastel shades, came recommended by Kast
Spectra......................................spect ra chrome was the main paint used for dubs back in the day, it was long-lasting, thick and shiny, cherish & karl used it on their whole train (BTP was featured on a news item collecting the empties afterwards and reckoned they used 200 cans)
Spraila.......................................come s from the same makers of Belton & Auto K, but is very watery
Stone Chip...............................a thick mastic spray that used to be easy to rack, and was thick enough not to sink in bare brick walls, so was good for outlining tracksides
Stop That Leak...........................same as rubber duck
Super Enamel...........................stocked by the old Texas Homestores (now homebase), small range of colours, but pretty good paint, its formula and style has been changed though, and is average nowadays
U-Spray.....................................the first ever spray paint available in the UK, came out in 1971, used by early writers including yours trully
Water Based Plasti-Cote...........initially seemd like a good idea, nice new colours deep purples and soft pinks, but was soon hated by writers, often clogged up, and froze in cold weather! nasty paint, thank god they dont make it anymore.

Yeah most paint as long as its sealed is still usuable. I bought these $5 gallons of rubberized avocado latex from the 70's out in mid-bumblefuck and it took a minute to mix up, but worked. Painted my paint room with it, and it was some of the best wall paint I ever used. I believe oil paint has an even better shelf life than latex...

Jungle Fever ehh? so this is my first post in here and i have a few questions for the serious people that know a few things about collecting and history of aerosol. okay first questions is where do i start to look for old paint.ive looked around garages, barns, and old factories but nothing but dust. and i was wondering if collecting modern paint for a later time is a good idea because i know the paint from the NYC transit era is worth more and harder to find but would the paint of todays day and age be of any value. thanks in advance for replys.

All i can say is in N.J. you will not find any good cans at the old mom and pop stores SLYLE and PJAY and some other cats cleaned it out years ago.I pick up my scraps from ESTATE and GARAGE SALES.Check your local dump to.If that dont work for you hit EBAY.

camera died but i got a couple zynolytes that look pretty worthless as well as bunch of paint to use..

the guy owned a couple Pittsburgh Paint Stores in Pittsburgh back in the day.. He also paints show cars, bikes, and yachts... He says he has mad shit at the crib and he is going to let me clean his place out and i can keep any old cans. So we will see whats up if he calls.

Blaze Orange nice...I will say this, that pitts paint is thick, coats real nice. Have used the vista green and safety. Use some of it, and hold on to a couple of the colors. Might not be collectible, but def worth probably what ever you paid for it.

How can it be a can of spray "paint" if there's no paint inside? Does a car collector have a 427 corvette, if the car doesn't have the motor?

I think its better to have empty cans for display but thats just me.I hate cans that leak.All collectors want mint full cans.

This is a long debated topic. In some of the other collecting fields, like beer cans and oil cans, the collectors actually empty the cans themselves. If the can was not empty already and is full NOS they will puncture the bottom and release all the liquid inside. I think any can collector with the long term in mind should think about this. The problem doing this with aerosol is that the can can still be under pressure. I do not have many leakage problems with cans from the late 40's and early 50's, where I do have problems is the newer ones from 70's and alot of label cap krylons. Cans were seamed together in more places and the gauge of metal is thinner than in older cans. Also, with all cans you always have a problem of the valve leaking. I had a can that I bought from a reputable seller listed as "slight loss of pressure" which was actually a pin hole on the side that slowly leaked over time, eventually leaking on a number of cans, being it was on a top shelf of the rack. I took the can off, and just sprayed out the rest of the contents (since the can was used already) and when it all dried up put it back on the shelf. Sometimes you just come up on empty cans. Recently I have come up on 2 completly empty cans of hot raspberry. I figure hold onto them to fill the gaps in the collection, and if something better comes along than that is fine. Too me it does not matter, because some that are even full will not spray if I wanted them too so whats the point then...
