anyone in the 206 area with a serious paint collection, please hit me up. I've come into a bunch of old cans since my dad passed. he would have wanted them to go to someone who would really be excited by these cans, as he was excited about old stuff all the time.

hit me with a PM if you know someone who is deserving & in the area.

thanks,

That is correct... The can does say copyright 1937 BUT you can clearly see the picture of the car on the side of the can is a 50's style car and there is NO WAY they would have a car that looked like that on a spray paint can in 1937 because cause looked totally different in 37. My guess is that 1937 is when the company was born not when this can was produced!!!!

its called shill bidding, sometime people do this to ''up'' a auction so someone that REALLY wants that item will pay more or if your worried you might loose it for less than you wanted it to go for.

so when your bidding on a item or having a bidding war you might just be bidding against that dudes freind and if he wins he dosent pay for it and it ussly winds back up on ebay

coffie crave 7
11-20-2009, 10:55 PM
this always happens in auction houses, a few people will go in and not look like they are together and place bids on a item, someone that sees alot of people fighting for this item will sometimes think it is worth more than they think, and they end up bidding over bored becuase of ''shill'' bidding or a fake hype.

and when you got stuipd rich people buying stuff just to brag they own it, they are deff gunna want something that they see others wanting, just so they can say. ''i own this''

but in reality they own a over priced paid for item, sometimes even junk or a fake

wisetuxedo-

i dont have any info on that can, but for a dollar its a good buy/find

engine / car paint came in a million different brands some being more popular and known than others.

their isnt that much of a huge market for them but they are awesome to collect because just like yours the lables are always wacky and weird

slyle
11-21-2009, 02:54 AM
GM Green. Engine enamel is usually pretty thick, and that is a pretty dope color, don't think its that old, a good user if you ask me.

As for the auctions, why are paint collectors the only people that seem to get caught up in bidding wars? Wait till the auctions end. I sell a ton of items on the bay, and you would be suprised how a quality item can up itself several hundred dollars in the last couple seconds. I don't have time wasting on bidding wars, I plan on going after some of those cans, but you will never know till its over.

That one icy grape looks like the wrong top, looks more like a newer krylon grape top. Gotta be careful, see lots of people out there changing tops, or not knowing what the correct top is on a can. Just because you find it with a top on it, does not make it correct....

I'm psyched on your collection, Nick Cook, but i can't help feeling a little bummed on that Wet Look selection. I've spent years looking for those, on actual paint hunts, and came up short every time. It's disheartening that someone in Britain can fork over money and have nearly the full lot without having to put in any real work. I would have expected folks from overseas to pay tribute to their own history and collect like Top Gun does. I wonder what relevance these have to you when they were never available outside of the northeastern US? I'd much rather see some vintage UK cans and a celebration of that history. I'm truly sorry to knock you, because I can see the passion is there. I just can't help but question the amount of money invested, and how much the internet played a part, when vintage cans are truly about heart and the hunt.

I can appreciate that. That particular spot where all those Wet Paints came from was one of the easier nuts to crack. I'm glad it worked out for people. There's a spot in Connecticut with 2 Wet Looks that the owner refuses to give up, even though he's 90 years old and I've introduced myself to him several times. Haha.

slyle
11-24-2009, 04:09 AM
You still can't crack that spot, whats taking so long....I have had plenty of spots like that, and they end up closing up, and shit probably gets tossed.

That's exactly what i think when i see all those second-hand cans...

I've spent so much time walking, bicycling, driving, swimming(no not swimming:) ), hunting for cans...i don't understand what you feel when you are sitting on your chair biding dollars on Ebay auctions...

It's not that exciting is it? I can understand that you like some of the designs of US cans, but collecting the whole sets...Do you collect other cans than Krylon and Rustos? And why? For the history of US graffiti?

collecting spray paint (even tho i pretty much fell off of interest) is a lot different today than it was 10 years ago. theirs hardly any ''ma and pop'' shops around anymore and with the ''popular'' interest in old paint, hunting for cans is pretty slim to none, a lot of die heart collectors use the internet and online auctions to seek out missing additions to there prized collection i don't see anything wrong with that? i don't care if you live on mars...

people over seas should be trading and selling with people in America each side can get things they cant normally get unless the travel well over seas. i can easily picture myself trading dubbles for some old euro paint.

This sorta reminds me of ''art glass'' before you could go to tag sales or estate sales and get something cheap that someone might not know much about, but today that is also very slim to none with tv shows like antique road show EVERY one thinks there old junk is worth a fortune.
and leaves collectors also going to action houses ect to look for finds...and with the internet it only makes collecting more easier with being able to meet other collectors and online auction sites / stores. cant blame it on the collectors its just the times and technology.

I remember reading an old story of a man going to houses and knocking on doors and asking people if they had any glass shades they might wanna get rid of and he got luckly alot of old houses with furnishings where left with 1900 gold mines and to the new house owners it was just ugly old junk. this idea lead me to go around and also knock on doors and ask ppl for old paint in there basement or garage and got alot of cool finds! and always free, that was cute back when i was a teenager but today in my late 20's that shit wouldn't fly high.

i always have art dealers come over if im selling or buying a piece of glass and they are always like WTF is up with the old spray paint, they have no idea theirs a market for it.

give it 5 more years and you will find very rare cans at high end auction houses im calling it now.

give it 5 more years and you will find very rare cans at high end auction houses im calling it now.

Cans were featured in the Guernsey's auction 11yrs ago but I will agree that cans and other "tools" will be making their ways into auctions in the future but it won't take 5yrs. I know for a FACT there will be some in at least one big auction next year possibly 2. ;)

The wet paint purple is not an easy one to find. That is also the only one I have been looking for too...Wet looks are rare all around to find in just about any color.

The Purple Wet Paint is a super hard one for sure. I got mine early on because I traded a couple other colors to Danny Boy from House of Pain for it back in like 2002 and I've never had the chance to get another one so I'm glad i got that one or I'd be looking for it too but thankfully I have the whole set. I'd say the Yellow is the second hardest color in the set.

And while we are on the subject how about these...

I have cans from europe and japan... I don't think it's a big deal on where the cans come from if you collect the cans you do. If Nick wants US cans more power to him. Lets face it we are collecting krylon grenade cans, 63 krylons, big face red devils, big face rustos... we never used any of those, we never were going to the stores and racking those, those were pre graffiti cans so in reality that is the same thing Nick is doing. He likes US cans and is more then likely paying homage to graffiti's origin which is no different then someone in Europe buying a canvas from Seen, Quik, Jon One, Lee and so on...

Judging from the other cans in there it's gotta be Flambeau Red...

I actually won the Purple and the Pink Wet Looks on Ebay around this time last year when Paulie had his auctions up. I think I won them for like $30/ea and on his second set of auctions is when he started bidding on his own auctions and pushing the price because I had bid on others he had and were outbid but it's funny that the same cans i was outbid on were posted up again 3 months later by him... At least I got the Purple and the Pink though... :D

Some of the rusto and aa yellows are not that bad, krylon Topaz yellow was a decent yellow. I had a few cans of catepillar yellow by Bowman that was some pretty thick shit. Most of the thicker ones are not a real true yellow. I remember using sun yellow on a white primed wall for some simple letters, and still needing 3-4 coats to really make it pop, you live and learn....

I mean, a real yellow, not pale, not orange, YELLOW.

In Europe it's almost impossible to find a great one.

Molotow/Belton make one good one (and a few not so good) Jasmine I think is the good one..?

The only one i really love is the Dupli-color Platinum Traffic Yellow.

Those cans are so dope, and so free!

Oh, and a Multona(Auto-K) one, but i don't know the name. A Sparvar one too...

My crew mate Burye had these spanish/mexican Krylon yellows that covered amazingly. He found a grip of them at a bargain store. Really ugly paper labels. Looked like John Deere/Bright Yellow, and covered in one shot.

I had one can of the first generation Ironlak paints, with the colored, rounded plastic tops and smaller logo. It was Pineapple Park, which is one of their brightest yellows, and covered very well. I find it funny, because the current formulation is one of their worst colors. I'd say on par with something as bad as Krylon sun yellow, but the older version was like late 90's era Rusto Sunburst Yellow in terms of coverage.

Ironlak Butter is pretty bright, and covers better than most yellows. I've outlined with it.

Painter's Touch Sun Yellow is ok, and looks alright with two coats. It's totally solid with three coats.

It is just a formula problem? Due to the fact that to obtain a real yellow lead is needed? They haven't find any substitution?

if were talking yellow in general, mtn hardcore lemon yellow is not bad. I used it for a force field not to long ago which came out nice and solid over a red background...

It must be weak pigments, because yellow is thin no matter what paint you use, be it bucket paint, artist tube paint, spray, whatever.

AA Buttercup and Old Rusto Sunburst Yellow is good. Used the Sunburst the other day. it was sitting for forever, and when I started to use it it was terrible, but the nI got it working nice and I was really surprised at it's thickness.

It should be unanimous from all USA posters that Rustoleum Sunburst yellow is the last best American yellow currently out there. AA summer squash has gone downhill and is slightly paler, but still workable. Another thick Rusto yellow that I can't find anymore is Cornmeal.
Union Pacific yellow is runny (although thick) and changes color while you use it, flirting with orange and then reverting. Really runny, not a great experience unless you're patient.

It must be weak pigments, because yellow is thin no matter what paint you use, be it bucket paint, artist tube paint, spray, whatever.

cadmium yellow is opaque, but it obviously shouldn't be sprayed due to inhalation hazard, cadmium is also pretty expensive....typically on housepaint (spray or bucket) the darker or more vibrant or intense of a color the more pigments are used and less titanium dioxide and other shit that makes paint cover well...that's why it helps to have a grey underneath a burgundy etc...otherwise you're doing multiple coats... like cracked ass said, rusto sunburst yellow is great and covers well..it does look like it has a tiny bit of red in it..but it's bright as heck

Does a grey primer coat actually work better than a white one for thin colors?

slyle
12-23-2009, 11:57 PM
I think it depends more on what the top coat is going to be. I try to use a primer shade closest to what I am painting (normal painting, and not "art")

StyleFive
12-24-2009, 03:01 AM
grey primer is definitely better than white or any other primer color as long as the final coat will not be lighter than the grey used for priming.

so says sherwin williams, anyways. my experience tends to support that, also.

you could use a burgundy to prime before a final coat of burgundy and it will never give you the same intensity and vibrance as you would have been able to achieve by using the same number of coatings of grey primer

It doesn't really matter. Having a base coat of any primer is going to improve coverage, because you don't have to hide the lines from whatever you're going over. Ideally, basecoating with a similar color is going to have the best results. If you ever watch or worked as a professional housepainter, they usually get the primer tinted to closely match the topcoat, so the job is completed in less time for low opacity colors.

slyle
12-24-2009, 02:55 PM
If only you had a choice with aerosols...when it comes to latex, yes they do tint the primer to match. I learned that when I tried painting a room red and it took 5 coats. The next time I did it I used a red primer and it covered in two.

I was of the understanding that Kobra, Monster, Beat, and Clash are all made by the same manufacturer.

Regardless, their paint is very good in my opinion. Better coverage than most and the spray quality is comparable to other euro brands.
