1. What I say bout the Jungle Green, but thats cool I knew you were gonna post them. You just could not resist.
2. WTF would someones grandfather be doing with 6 cans of Jungle Green. I mean come one now, I'm not calling anyone a liar, just shit is a little hard to believe. I mean 1 I might believe, but 6? And all the other colors were basic? What would the average person use 6 cans of Jungle Green for? I ont mean to go on a rant (Thanks D.Miller) but come on now...
3. More posts, lets see some pictures!!!

I have a can of that Krylon yellow stencil ink, where the Krylon headquarters is listed as Norristown, PA. It contains lead. The can is a tank, very heavy, obviously kept all its pressure.

Yeah punds cans are a beautiful thing, too bad paint companies felt it was more important to have pressure over paint...or did they have some other reason for cutting the amount...cheap bastards.

So I got this Red Devil can of yellow, only the name and number is missing. I believe it was called "yellow" and I have a number, but am not sure if they had any other yellows. Anyone with info, I would greatly apreciate it...oh yeah and whats up with the x's, how do i fix that? anyone...anyone?

I love sapolin, great can, wish it was in better condition. Sapolin was a great brand back in the day, I am not sure if they still make sprays anymore. The other is a nice bite off of Krylon, the color check this "Little Boy Blue" It was made by NYBCO (New York Bronze Company)
Later, and where is your flics?

osh?..as in orchard supply hardware?it might be worth something to someone who doesn't live on the west coast(osh only has stores in the west, its not a nationwide chain, even tho its owned by sears)other than that, they still have rose available in the stores,(all their cans are paper wrapped)it has a different label than the ones they have now tho.i dont know anyone who collects them,so its not likely that its worth anything...good luck anyways...

Whospank is right. that paint is from the west coast and some people on the east coast love it and really want it. The only thing is I hate to tell ya that the ones the sell in the stores now are paper labels and all say 1984 on them so it probabally isn't that old. As far as that color goes I don't know if they still make it or not, I'd have to go check, I was there a couple weeks ago and I think I remember seeing that color but not 100% sure.
As always if you have old paint and want to trade email me at

yeah a date on a can is only the copyright date. If there is a newer date then you can expect it to be as old as the next date that appears. Does that make sense, some companys like rusto change their cans often, so usually the date reflects the age, but try tellin that to the old guy at the hardware store. A good example is AA. Dates on the old cans say 1991, but they were available like that till like 96-97. So you figure it out.

word up on the dating.
it's a confusing shit, this dating thing. it seems to go back and forth between date of copyright (design/formula) and date of manufacture. and i havent been able to put together an easy way to figure it out since it's never consistent.
for instance, Rusto cans can be found for every year between 1976 and 1984- some years nothing changed on those cans. Hard Hats debuted in the late 70s and the SAME EXACT can has new dates on it all the way to 1988. Rusto's dating then gets fuzzy for a few years and revises a few times before the 90s.
Krylon seems to maintain the same date (1991) on every can since SW bought the company, but with small revision dates. where it's easier to figure out dates on really old cans where they might actually print the manu. date on it, it's better to use color charts to approximate can dates.
the big headache that i have coming on is BARCODES. not barcode caps, but the strange barcoding that krylon did in the late 70's/80's.
by the way, does anyone else have an 83 Rusto can with a SCREENED barcode (not a sticker) on the cap?
cracked ass
09-20-2001, 02:42 AM
My understanding of copyright dates is this: The can's actual age will be anywhere from AS OLD AS the year marked, to AS NEW AS the year they next changed the package design. Except in the 78-80 range for Rusto there are all three years marked on cans with identical designs, so I could be mistaken.
As an example, a 1983 Rusto might have come out in 83,84,85, or early 86, and then in 86 they changed the design again so it has to be one of those years, no earlier than 83 and no later than 86.
I have actually had plenty of luck with hardware store owners believing the copyright date is also the date of manufacture, so I get good discounts, and pay the least for the oldest cans.
slyle
09-20-2001, 03:14 AM
Exactaly, but then some store owners are like "it sprays...then its good" and they have gone af far as spraying it in front of me...and they know damn well they been sitting on those cans for over 10 years, and that they are not gonna sell them. But anyway, cracked post some cans, lets see whats on your shelf...
slyle
09-20-2001, 03:27 PM
Yeah Ihave to add to what cracked say, and disagree a little. In 78 Rusto had the old numbers. In 79 they put the new and old numbers on the cans. Then in 83 they had cans that had the name stamped on them, or a label. So they are not all the same.
One More thing to add, but I am not sure of this, and that is that not every year has every color.I only heard this for someone, and my collection of Rusto is not big enough to veriify this, but I do notice a certain trend in the ones I do have that might suggest it, I dunno?
And what is the oldest rusto anyone has seen. I believe 60 is the oldest I have heard, and I have seen a 62. The 58 or is it 55 gallons, have the same design as the 62 can, so does that mean that that is the original and oldest spray can design. I believe there are 2 examples of that on this board.
One last question, and that is if anyone has the original TOPS for a 73 Rusto Flat white and a 73 Rusto Chestnut Brown.

I refute this by talking up the possibility of partial pressure loss. If the can is more than 10 years old I'll mention that it has probably lost part of its pressure, so it seems to work in the store but get it home and it'll run out of gas halfway through. Therefore I'd pay half price tops. This usually works to get me a deal, whether or not it's true.
And slyle I don't have access to a scanner so I can't show you my tastiest finds. I honestly don't have much before '78, except the few Derustos I mentioned already, and the Utilac flat black with small cover.

the biggest secret is to learn how to act like an adult when dealing with adults. the way you dress alone can make store owners completely rule out the possibility that you're using paint for.... you know.

well, plastikote has always been pretty close to the automotive market, much like duplicolor. but there was a time, 70's 80's, when they tried some ill decorator colors. check out Art Of Getting Over (or ContainsLead) and you'll see a few. they used to have lines that started with T-(a number) and like slylington said, a polyurethane with the latter P-(a number)... a little hint for the diggers and a bummmmppp for the thread. i'm running out to go find some HTF NOS...
oh yeah, in that blurry shelf photo 2 pages back, there's a picture of a PlastiKote ployurethane, it's a white paper label with no top.
You would not believe the score I got today. 100+ cans of scotties, early 80's rustos, '68 krylon metal cans, barcodes, name labels, prytops, '64 red and white cans, Bromas, Spruce, '69 Derustos, newer Derustos etc, etc.
I'll post a list on contains lead once I sort it all out. The most incredible haul ever.

Kalifornia Kolors were made in the late 80's thru the early 90's by Borden and Sherwin Williams (SWP). Check to see who made yours, and then you have your answer. Personally i think the graphics are so nauseatingly neon, it's necessary. More popular to collect on one coast for entirely obvious reasons.

i have no clue how canadian cans are labeled, i've never even seen one aside from online. the SWP "flatball" krylons are ALL dated 1991, and/or with '94 or later revision dates. clearly the mandarin is a borden can (pre-1991). krylon took the "rust magic" formula out of their decorator line in '83 but that was in the states. that can doesn't look that old, but anything's possible. it is canada afterall.
that's all i got.

ok, before everyone gets crazy about this, LIGHT BEIGE is not a 'crazy money' color. do not confuse scarcity among collectors with rarity and big money. we are can obsessives who find certain colors from certain times. i think the idea that a few people are looking for it was misconstrued somewhere.

the big wind-up (played to the tune of 1980's "The Big Throwdown" by South Bronx)....
1) Kane is talking about what appears to be a Canadian can on Seeking's shelf. Canadian cans have a different caution warning than US cans do, using three symbols of warning. on some Canadian cans, the can design is adapted to comply to this.
**canadian collectors- any info on when this started? how about Canadian cans without that warning on them, if any?
2) i don't know where this misspelling thing came from. but while we're on topic- the proper spelling is Rust-Oleum. Rusto is fine for a abbreviation. If you can't spell Fire Hydrant, well.....
3) Rust-oleum, probably due to their industrial roots, kept lead pigments in several styles of their paint until roughly 1970. supposedly there was last lead in 1972 Forest Green, but the 72 Forests i've seen do not contain lead. the 1967 FH Red had lead in it, and possibly the 1970 (confirm, slyle?) the paint industry knew what lead could do in its dried, chipping form and usually made it pretty clear what did and didn't have lead on the cans (excepting of course, EXTREMELY old paint predating aerosol paint). if so, rusto cans says it has lead on the back of the can. lead colors, incidentally, are often whites, reds and yellows and colors made from these colors.
4) Sparvar gets crazy disrespect for no good reason. this mysterioso krylon sub-division is a pretty scarce thing and they made lots of the same colors as krylon. nice cans too, especially the pre-borden ones.
i hope someone out there takes their sparvar seriously, it's just as worth collecting as any other paint!

Worth 3 bucks to who? It all depends on what you want to collect, and why. Flatballls are a good place to start, sometimes borden bar codes. Its a start and most can still be found on shelves with a little digging. Aswer the first few questions, and you might find an answer...
not really...just stocking up on some colonial blue, mauve, and rose. hoping to sell some if anyone would like any. the guy that owns the place said i could write down shit i was looking for and he'd call me if he got any in. he said he got someone a jungle green one time.
sunflower yellow isn't on the rustoleum.com current color list. in fact, it's only got one yellow (sunburst).
so i'm going to go pick myself up a sunflower yellow tomorrow...

Flat Balls dont always mean better quality. I think it was in the mid 80's that the quality of paint was changed around. I know with rusto that 83 cans spray like krylon but still cover like rusto, (Basically they dont stutter when they talk). I think older krylons (name labels and older) are the better ones, but I have not used them in a while and really dont notice too much of a difference. Look at pacific blue, that is a great color, everything that krylon should be. There are alot of factors why some colors like yellows and oranges suck and the blues and grey (or should i say gray) cover good. I dont want to get into it now, maybe another day, or maybe someone can pick up where I leave off.

Hate to tell you but a price guide is usless at this point, and just way too much work. If you are collecting only for shear value, I would say to quit now. A can is only worth what someone would pay for it. Most of the time I just pass up on some cans just cause the only thing I could do with them is use them. As far as shortcuts, I cant help you with them. Joe whats your take on all this?
imported_joewelcome
05-29-2002, 09:51 PM
what's my take?
well, i believe that most, if not all of the shortcut cans i've ever seen are paper labels. then again, i don't pay much attention to them.
the day a price guide comes out for spray cans is the day i quit. priceguides cause more problems than they solve. i want nothing to do with it. like slyle said, if you're collecting for the cash you're not gonna last very long.

Well the cans I was posting was nothing special. I was more or less showing people the different generations of krylons cans, if anyone noticed. You start with the old midget cans, then the early 60's small tops. From there I took you to the rookie borden year with the borden script, next was similar, spray paint cans, aka fat seams, aka 68 cans. Though they were produced well after 68. From there you got your name on cans notch tops ( not pictured regular name on cans). Next Ing caps, then name labels, and last bar codes. Though sherman williams procuced barcodes, and even PAPER LABELS, I prefer to stop at the borden years. Uhhhhhh, ok, I AM DONE.

fatugly..
Aqua Turquoise is always nice, looks like one of the SWP (Sherwin Williams) cans with the holdover barcode cap.
The Krylon industrial/tuff cote/ stuff has very little collector appeal, i'm not sure why. Some of them weren't made very long, but it probably has to do with the dreaded chisel (fan) tip.
Kali Kolors are always cool- such intensely ugly graphics!
The Nybco cans are also nice- greatly underrated brand for collecting...
Sparvar is great and disrespected for no reason.. the older Dura Color has a cool 80's-ish label.
5oclock...
I like that design too. that pant is awful, by the way, but hey- the old deisgn is fresh.

if you're gonna paint any kind of clothing, something i've loved doing since high school, you're best off using acrylics and brushes. i like gel medium by liquitex to finish. and, uh.. FUCK AIRBRUSHES!!

1. This would be the company for the santa spray, and the chevy orange. Read up, all their cans even the newer ones say "inventor of spray paint" http://www.seymourpaint.com/story.cfm
2. Rusto Adobe...hmm...thats a nice color, I happen to like it, and I know joe loves it even more. For info on rusto cans, and what designs lasted to when www.rustmagic.com (http://www.rustmagic.com) Thank Joe for that one.
3. I picked up some spanish brown bar codes today I am looking to trade for older derustos, if anyone is interested.

this laura ashley thing is puzzling; it was such a fringe brand, it was only sold at certain stores, it was a franchised product from valspar. marginal as ever. i can't find anything definite on it either.
where was it sold? and what assurances do you have on its availability (how do you know it's discontinued?)
JinkZ aNd BrainZ

it was sold in lowes, thats the only store as far as i know and i spoke with the manager of the paint department and he said that they were discontinuing it. all off the cans have gone done to $1.97 clearance as well. i am interested in finding any other colors than from the ones i have listed if anyone knows of any and i am looking for a heath green as well. hit me up at

the old zynolite epoxy is what that belton molotow color "PJ green" is based on. it matches the zynolite avacado. apparently it was some of pj's favorite shit back in the day. red devil went down hill too as did krylon to a lesser extent so its no surprise that the old zynolite was dope.

aha!!! worldoflies has stumbled upon a crucial piece of paint collecting- history, mutherfuckers!
WHY did quality go downhill? don't die wondering!
1)Red Devil and Krylon are both bought by Shrwin Williams. the entire approach of both companies is skewed forever.
2)Epoxy paint goes out of vogue, perhaps by the better quality of appliance paint or the decrease of home improvement.
3)Stronger pigment bases lose their cost-effectiveness or are outlawed as solvent-based paint is slowly eased out of the consumers' reach.
(dropping science as if i was clumsy)
ps- the real question is this, is "PJ Green" a yuppie-paint duplicate of Zynolite Avocado Epoxy or Zynolite Fresh Avocado Epoxy? that's one to grow on.

everyone is guilty of copping cans off e-bay from time to time,no big deal i do it also, but i really believe that the art digging is being overlooked by a couple of rich kids who can afford to buy collections... where is the art in that... that means that any fuckface w/ a credit card can buy a collection, or for that matter mommy and daddy could buy one for them... this doesn't go for all of y'all, (actually far from it) but remember tearing thru packs of baseball cards trng to find griffey jr. rookies, or even clemente's and shit, all u could afford was like maybe 2-3 packs a week but their was always that little fucker whose mommy and daddy went out and just straight up bought him that card that you spent your whole years allowance and pay from odd jobs on rippingup packs for that bitch... the day you found it u were in 7th heaven and the value u put on it was far more than anything the beckett price guide said... have fun w/ this shit... go dig get creative and trade up...don't be that little rich kid... i am gonna go bid now...peace... and please dont confuse what i'm saying ebay is dope but give shit a try before u give up and buy it...whatevers dont mind me i am just ranting probably cause i am a broke fuck who cant afford e-bay's astronomical prices... but i am glad cause when i get a dope can i value it more... peace out fellas!!!!!!!

i know that this question has been asked before, i dont think its ever been answered though. pricing? i know its all based on how much the person likes that can, but can you guys give me somewhat of a round about idea of prices?
5:00 Shadow
12-05-2002, 06:58 PM
bro don't even try i used to wonder about that also... but you answered yourself... if u watchmarket trends it seems that scotties are thru the roof but hat happens when all the guys paying hundreds of dollars for them get all they want the price will drop... collect for personal value not monetary... i know explaing this shit to your folks or friends who cant comprehend the collecting of paint cans new and used it is easy to explain thru monetary value cause it easy to grasp... but collect for delph fuck money ... money fucks everything up.... peace

good news, krylon has come out with 48 new colors. i dont think they're with sherwin williams anymore. some of these colors are very close to some discontinued ones.
watermelon=hot pink
hosta leaf=avocado
georgia cay=bonfire
bahama sea=teal blue
ballet slipper=pink pastel
tuscan sunset=brick [cap looks the same as georgia clay, but the color is real close to brick.]
i found them at hobby lobby :dazed:

8 of them are a series called whisper white, its white wit just a hint of color.

its just as good as the rest of krylon. they went back to the old style can kinda, they got rid of the box around the 3d balls. it looks alot better. give me a few days and i'll get flics up. if you have hobby lobby where you live go check it out, its the only place i've seen with it. a few cans at wall mart are in the new cans also. i forgot one color, tomatoe looks like sunset orange. keep your eyes peeled at the paint store near you. peace, zewlives...:king:

i too was unlucky at both hobby lobby stops although they say by mid to end of january ALL HOBBY LOBBIES will be fully stocked with the many new krylon products. I know there out there else where (walmart,kmart,micheals...) but they havent made it into my city and im tired of driving so im just gonna wait till the end of january.... shit should be SUPER ill though judging by the color names...

krylon finally stepped up, maybe we will start collecting the silhouetted 5 balls now, if they change it back... i just hope the paint is thick... SATINS!!!!!!!!!
zew what does mimosa and equestrian look like
these names are off the hook woven tapestry???
tidepool? what do these look like...
celery sounds dope, frost grape (icy grape??), italian olive, watermellon, hyacinth, these all sound dope...
-do y'all think this in response to the demand for foreign paint w/ wide color selection, i mean Krylon has their graffiti hurts campaign and all but they gotta realize that they have a market here maybe they should go for the aerosol art campaign like belton... cant wait for whisper whites also... i am thinking out loud now...peace peace

all the colors i used were thick. some of the colors i cant match with the name, i just took a piece of paper in the store and started writing shit down. it was like a system overload, i was flippin out. these are the colors i'll be scannin in, for now anyway.
hosta leaf, tidepool, stonewash denim, tuscan sunset, pamento, grape frost, watermelon, ballet slipper, fresh salmon, mimosa, woven tapestry, bright idea, sweet cream, and meringue.
hopfully they'll fit, its all in one panaramic picture. next time i go to hobby lobby i'll take my camera, and get flics of everything.

i don't have a camera or i'd post, but i found a wierd can at Grampy's
it's a 6.5 oz can of rusto "stops rust" drippy letters in the circle logo, with "Auto Primer" in fancy letters above the rusto symbol, with "white primer" and the number printed 3 times on the cap. looks kind of old.
and a 5 1/2 oz can of tempo auto paint with a metal cap, paper label.
any idea what i'm talking about?

paper label shortcuts are not too hard to find. krylon has discontinued that style of can so techinically you could consider them collectible. although none of them have any sort of collectors re-sell value YET. they are a nice addition to a collection i think... I've collected almost the entire line of shortcut paper labels. the pink and purple are pretty ill colors to use as well. but no they arent worth anything except to the individual but they aren't gonna make anymore like the paper labels so decide for your self.

ran across some derusto from the 60's....i dont really collect paint, but i picked up a couple of the older cans that are in good shape still....most of the ones i bought were different colors, and i figured it was a good start to a collection...(in the past, i always found old paint and gave it to a local head who collects it cause it meant way more to him than to me)...but this time, i think im gonna keep some....what i want to know is...theres more of the derusto regal blue---im sure of this...and there might be more of some of the other colors... is this worth anything to any of yall?? or would anybody be interested in trading some stuff for it...
it might not all be from the 60's...some of the cans didnt have dates, so i dont know.

No year on it, my guess is that it would be early 80's. Its a 6oz can not a full size, I am interested in them in different colors. Here are the type of cans that I am looking for....
Notch Top Krylons or OLDER
Rusto 1978 or OLDER
Derusto full size and LITTLE JOBS, no cans with rainbow on them
Any early 60's cans or older, if no date, would have 1 or 2 digit zip code, and no warning on front of can
Any color with avocado in it, or Chineese Red.

you named a couple right there, but it all depends on what you are into... you will see a really really hard to find can on ebay soon... just wait and see, i dont want to spoil it... i would be willing to bet the reserve is set so high no one will be able to buy it, but you'll see a missin' link can, here's a hint its krylon and its a '66...
aside from that, big face devils are dope, 62-67 rustos, icy grape, hot raspberry in krylon.... wet looks are "gangsta" it all depends...

komik- yeah, i have corals with those "New!" caps.. those were on all 12 'Fashion Colors' for a minute when they came out in '89.
icy grape and jungle green are probably the 2 most HYPED krylon colors by writers.. they were hyped back in the 80's and they're hyped now. why exactly isn't important.. but colors like Spanish Brown (a gorgeous caramel color), Baby Blue, Chippewa, Plum, Pastel Aqua and so on aren't as talked about but just as fresh. Then there's sleepers like Teal Blue and Terracotta, 2 killer colors to use.
it's whatever u like, that's all.
speaking of 'gangsta'....it's not about a salary, it's all about reality.

I got the spanish brown if you need them, though they are older and I would not use them. I do have tons of odkhaki, and other newer colors they do not make anymore if people want to use some of the classics, and not feel so bad. Starting prices on most cans $5 each with a one case minimum. Inquire for color list.

the silver 1964 is not full but it was the first can i found.
the avacado (rusto) is full...... got it on ebay
american accents-- i know i'm missing a few but i have a ton of summer squashes and indian spice. the indian spice they dont make anymore so if anyone wants to trade.
i was focusing my collecting to old krylons. mainly bordens and bar codes but i've picked up a few other cans along the way
and the painters touch i noticed i had alot of colors in my using stash so i put one can of each color aside so that in twenty years the might become collectibles <---niggas gotta start some where
i'm missing a few colors on that one too i've been meaning to stop at home depot and pick up what i don't have.
the woodsavers on the other hand is a funny story.
i went to the local hardware store to pick up a tube of caulk (home ownership type shit) and while i was there i notice a can of old rusto (horizon blue) that i didn't remember ever seeing before so i grabbed it. on my way out the door i ask the guy behind the counter if he had any older cans and he said that he had just threw out all his old stock.
then this girl says "oh i think we still have some in the back" they turned out to be the woodsavers i told him i was looking for one of each color he had so he goes in the back and comes out with this box
seven cans total i say "how much?" and he says just take them i was like bet thanks alot and left before he could change his mind.
just goes to show there are still some decent people out there

every one of the 67's i've seen has the red stock tip with a white center.. these are the caps that come on the cans, as they've got the removable 'condom' over them. i have also seen a white stock tip on one of them, but i have no way of knowing if it was replaced.

I don't think anyone really focuses on OSH.. I know that it's still made and sold in Orchard Supply Hardware stores. And yes, it is still made with a paper label.
I am unaware of any colors being discontinued, but then again OSH isn't anywhere near me. Californians?

OSH is the shit! (to me anyway) heres the story. all paper labels say 1984 on the back. THEY ARE NOT PAPER LABEL ANYMORE. most stores you might find some, but most carry only the metal cans with the new can design and shape. the colors are the same, but i still think the paper labels are cool cans. they are discontinued and getting harder to find every day. the plum was discontinued all the way, so a paper label of the plum would be nice to have. dope fiend blue is the illest color osh ever made! i would want it if i didnt already have it!:shook: :shook: :shook: :shook: :shook:

they had maybe 3 of the blues and one can of the yellow in those hobby paints. they also had sets of borden "home accent" i guess the first version of the short cut they were dated 1990 they also had a paper label set of Illinos Bronze Hobby work paint looked to be about the same age. the illinois line features a few dope colors my fave being "miami green" which is a short cut version of mint green. ill post the illinois bronze ones in a sec but lemme know if you want the blues or yellow i dont know how much longer theyll be there. the store was seriously depleted since last i checked....

paper label marking paint borden/krylon...
off the top of my head i want to say that they might have started that in the early 80's but i know for a fact that most of the ones out there are very late borden run. like 85-91. yet another example of "don't let the paper labes fool ya!".. those are probably just like many of the industrial line, which look older then they are.
krylon used paper labels on and off on different cans all the time, even into the SWP years.

Canadian paint, mmm...those older krylons look interesting, and tremco, thats some good shit, at least the ones I got. I am looking to get my hands on some older canadian panit, I wonder about the dates, they say spray paint, not interior exterior, but I think there is an american krylon can under, wonder which one.

not a dumb question at all..
rust-oleum is the easiest, you can often even tell the MONTH of production on older cans. copyrights are clear.
krylon is tougher, but let's see.. sticker-capped cans are early 80's to 91, paper label BORDENS can be from 66 to 80 (several other factors). check manufacturer and on sherwin williams cans, check the Revision date (Rev)
other brands are all different.. but think about it like this- barcodes came in in the late 70s- krylon was one of the first. if there's no real warning on the front of the can, it might well be a 1960 or earlier can. a paper label is NEVER a sign of age on a random can- lots of people still use paper labels. there's lots of other factors, and since you're in canada, it'll be still different. post up pictures for more data.

Also, to add to joe's reply, there are a few other ways to decipher some cans date.
•One way is if you turn the can over you'll notice on most cans you probably have ever seen, the bottom is concaved (one piece of metal). This is what all the new cans have but in 60's and back w/ the exception of a small handful of brands the bottoms were made with what seems to be two pieces of metal and instead of a nice smooth concave you will rather see the beginning of a concave and then a flat piece over that i'll have to post a flick of it... this is apparent in the red devil supreme qualities... the older fat lips* had this bottom though i have some cans w/o fat lips and the older styled bottom (go figure)
•then there is always the cap method...
depending on which top a can is covered in can help ya out also...
obviously metal small tops are tell tale signs that you have a vintage can... usually found on early 60's and back...
then you have some plastic small tops which are few and far between yet still exist this must have beeen a transitional period... whatever, most good co's didn't rock 'em so fuck 'em...lol
Next trend in caps were big "tin caps" seen on 65 and back rustos and 66 krylons etc.
Then came fat lips which were most notable on the red devil supreme qualities, but can also be seen if you scroll up and peep that nu-kote avocado or the illinois bronze spray o namel i posted (might be one page back) these are fresh for display but a bitch to get off ( you'll see many used cans of this that look like they had surgery performed on em w/ a screwdriver to get them off... many got torn up) oh well. There were all types of fat lip variations depending on the brand...
then came plastic caps which we could spend an hour on but to make a long story short, the early versions had no writing on the tops and no pry notch, then they got a pry notch and then some companies got writing on the tops... Krylon had the bright idea of making notchtops that never seem to fit correctly n the cans...lol... I mean this all varies, wet looks have the freshest plastic caps in my eyes and they look nothing like a krylon or rusto top... there are many different types, i'll just leave it at that...
so that is a little bit more data to add to what joe spoke of already... hope it helps
:D the method is in the medium<<<<...

Paint junky I have to correct you on some of your info. Small tops do not auctomatically mean 60's cans. I have perfect examples of spray ons with small metal tops dated mid 70's. Though I will say a small top mostly means majority of the cans with them are old. One other thing though, when talking about tops, is that you must remeber where you find cans. Even companies themselves have not kept things consistent. If a can is found on a store shelf there is a good chance your getting the right top, though you never know what could have happend over the years. Out of a garage or "some other" place, there is always the chance the tops have been switched, especially if the can has been used. I dont think there is much more I can add to this for now, if the can has a one or two digit zip code, it is most likely early 60's or older. No warning at all on front probably 50's or later. Styles of cans changed over the years, and some companies did one thing while others lagged behing. At a time when seymour was producing their cylinder cans, you had companies producing midget cans. They soon transisted too the normal cans we know of today, but instead of 12oz you had pound cans and more. Joe what was the larges you seen in a regular size can? I am loosing my train of thought so I'm out.

this one may be a stupid question, but a rather simple one thats bothered me for a good bit.....what does O.D. stand for (as in O.D. Khaki).....
imported_joewelcome
06-20-2003, 06:31 AM
ok.. donnie- O.D. Khaki is a military color used in camouflage color schemes. you might have heard of Olive Drab before- it's the common darkened green/gray that army-navy stores are full of. O.D.- Olive Drab
clasico- the first lineup of American Accents was in 2 waves. there's the 1991 cans and the 1994 cans (in 94 they introduced the Tapestry Line and expanded the Classic Line).. they look identical- and some of the 1994 colors happen to be more scarce.
CIRCULATION? that's anyone's guess. the new cans are 1996 if i remember correctly. considering all the money spent on making it, distro'ing it and shipping the stuff, everyone wants to at least see some return on the investment of the cans in the stores. so you might see some cans for a while when it's considered a real dog color. sadly, Autumn Gold and Indian Spice were dogs, at least commercially. that paint's so good it gives me heartburn. this is the business......

had to hit the books on this one..
Slate Blue, to my estimation, was dead in the water after Borden introduced it in 89. HOWEVER, both Slate and Colonial appear on the SWP (Sherwin Williams Paints) 12/91 chart and the SWP 1/92 chart. The only Slates i've ever seen are Bordens, but then again it wasn't too popular neither. Another nice paint condemned to the salvage store.

the slate blue colonial blue thing is sorta the anomlie (sp) that was more or less common practice for every paint company for years. comapnies like krylon and rustleum are notorious for indroducing colors by reigon. so one mans rare color , is another mans fill in color for 900 pieces because its saturated in an area. a good example is berry ping painters touch , we here in my city have to go way out of the way to find that stuff , but i know cats in other cities , and that is a color that they use constantly because they have a surplus , however they are teh ones bitching that they cant get spa blue... of which we have the vise versa nahimean. sorry if i confused anyone , i lost my train of thought.

1320 zinc chromate green primer was made until roughtly '76. with zinc chromate being really harmful and the nixon/ford administrations having imposed many environmental and consumer safety laws, krylon killed off the z.c. yellow and green primers and made zinc chromte-free 1345 YELLOW and 1346 GREEN primers for metal.
you don't have all the greens unless you got both Zinc Chromate Green 1320 AND Green Metal Primer 1346.
