Tunnels, airports and bridges in New York City are closed. Many subway lines are also closed. The New York markets have also been closed. In Washington, officials said the FBI was investigating reports of a plane hijacking before the crashes. President Bush is returning from Florida.

The towers were struck by bombers in February 1993.

"The plane was coming in low and ... it looked like it hit at a slight angle," said Sean Murtagh, a CNN vice president, the network reported.

Large holes were visible in sides of the 110-story buildings, landmark twin towers.

"I was watching TV. and heard a sonic boom ...," witness Jeanne Yurman told CNN. "The side of the world trade center exploded. Debris is falling like leaflets. I hear ambulances. The northern tower seems to be on fire."

The tops of the twin towers were obscured by the smoke.

Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles from the tower, one witness said.

The center bombing on Feb. 26, 1993, killing six people and injured more than 1,000 others.

In 1945, an Army Air Corps B-25, a twin-engine bomber, crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building in dense fog.

Another plane crashed a few miles outside of Pittsburgh. They don't know if it was connected to the other crashes. I live close to the airport here in Nashville, and planes fly over my house every 3 minutes. For the first time in 17 years, there's nothin flyin over my house. My condolences to the families of those working at the WTC when it was hit. And, as WillyWonka said many moons ago, NUKE THE ARABS AND TAKE THEIR OIL!

NEW YORK -- The United States just declared a state of war against terrorists this morning following a chaotic course of events across the nation, NBC reports.

In a horrific sequence of destruction, terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center and the twin 110-story towers collapsed Tuesday morning. Explosions also rocked the Pentagon and the State Department and spread fear across the nation. streaming video

Authorities had been trying to evacuate those who work in the twin towers, but many were thought to have been trapped. About 50,000 people work at the Trade Center.

"This is perhaps the most audacious terrorist attack that's ever taken place in the world," said Chris Yates, an aviation expert at Jane's Transport in London. "It takes a logistics operation from the terror group involved that is second to none. Only a very small handful of terror groups is on that list. ... I would name at the top of the list Osama bin Laden."

President Bush ordered a full-scale investigation to "hunt down the folks who committed this act."

Within the hour, an aircraft crashed on a helicopter landing pad near the Pentagon, and the White House, the Pentagon and the Capitol were evacuated.

One of the planes that crashed into the Trade Center was American Airlines Flight 11, hijacked after takeoff from Boston en route to Los Angeles, the airline said. American Airlines issued a statement saying it had "lost" two aircraft -- Flight 11, with 92 people aboard, and Flight 77 from Washington to Los Angeles, carrying 64 people.

In Pennsylvania, United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757 en route from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco, crashed about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The fate of those aboard was not immediately known and it was not clear if the crash was related to the disasters elsewhere. In a statement, the airline also said it was deeply concerned about another plane, Flight 175, a Boeing 767 bound from Boston to Los Angeles.

Authorities went on alert from coast to coast, halting all air traffic, evacuating high-profile buildings and tightening security at strategic installations. The Situation Room at the White House was in full operation.

At the World Trade Center, "everyone was screaming, crying, running, cops, people, firefighters, everyone," said Mike Smith, a fire marshal. "It's like a war zone."

"I just saw the building I work in come down," said businessman Gabriel Ioan, shaking in shock outside City Hall, a cloud of smoke and ash from the World Trade Center behind him. "I just saw the top of Trade Two come down."

Nearby a crowd mobbed a man on a pay phone, screaming at him to get off the phone so that they could call relatives. Dust and dirt flew everywhere. Ash was 2 to 3 inches deep in places. People wandered dazed and terrified.

Evacuations were ordered at the United Nations in New York and at the Sears Tower in Chicago. Los Angeles mobilized its anti-terrorism division, and security was intensified around the naval facilities in Hampton Roads, Va.

The planes blasted fiery, gaping holes in the upper floors of the twin towers. A witness said he saw bodies falling and people jumping out. About an hour later, the southern tower collapsed with a roar and a huge cloud of smoke; the other tower fell about a half-hour after that, covering lower Manhattan in heaps of gray rubble and broken glass. Firefighters trapped in the rubble radioed for help.

"Today we've had a national tragedy," Bush said in Sarasota, Fla. "Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country." He said he would be returning immediately to Washington.

The crashes at the World Trade Center happened minutes apart, beginning just before 9 a.m., EST.

Heavy black smoke billowed into the sky above one of New York City's most famous landmarks, and debris rained down on the street, one of the city's busiest work areas. When the second plane hit, a fireball of flame and smoke erupted, leaving a huge hole in the glass and steel tower.

John Axisa, who was getting off a commuter train to the World Trade Center, said he saw "bodies falling out" of the building. He said he ran outside, and watched people jump out of the first building. Then there was a second explosion, and he felt heat on the back of neck.

WCBS-TV, citing an FBI agent, said five or six people jumped out of the windows. Witnesses on the street screamed every time another person leaped.

People ran down the stairs in panic and fled the building. Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper drifted over Brooklyn, about three miles away.

Several subway lines were immediately shut down. Trading on Wall Street was suspended. New York's mayoral primary election was postponed. All bridges and tunnels into Manhattan were closed down.

David Reck was handing out literature for a candidate for public advocate a few blocks away when he saw a jet come in "very low, and then it made a slight twist and dove into the building."

Terrorist bombers struck the World Trade Center in February 1993, killing six people and injuring more than 1,000 others.

"A second occurrence is just beyond belief," said Ira Furber, former National Transportation Safety Board spokesman.

"It's just sick. It just shows how vulnerable we really are," Keith Meyers, 39, said in Columbus, Ohio. "It kind of makes you want to go home and spend time with your family. It puts everything in perspective," Meyers said. He said he called to check in with his wife. They have two young children.

My mom woke me up today, with tears in her eyes, holding my nephew. I was like "what??? what is it?" I thougth something happened to my Dad or my brother. She was like "there's been a national tradgedy today" then she turned on the news. I'm in shock. My stomach is twisted into a mess, I can't even imagine the people who are hearing this as being the loss of their dad or brother. I've never felt this blank and in shock before. How can we love so many things and yet inflict these acts of hatred on eachother. Us on them, them on us. How can we be such complex, intellegent, loving creatures and still (at times) be comeplete monsters).

This isn't the start of the end. This stuff has happened since day one. Someone always does the unspeakable. When pearl harbor was attacked, when we dropped the first atom bomb, nazi germany, the first world war, the civil war, the cold war, the fall of rome... I mean bad things happen, it doesn't mean it's armegheddon. You shouldn't think that way, you're only doing an injustice to yourself.

I just want to say that we are a strong country. We can and will overcome anything anybody throws in our faces. Each time terrorists take a cheap shot at us we get a little bit stronger and a little bit smarter.
We HAVE to have faith in our government and our defence and attack systems. As the younger generation, it's important that we all stay updated on the events. We should take this very seriously, because we don't know what this means for our future. Also, we should turn this terrible tradgedy into something good. For me, it's this: In America, we tend to have it so good that we never appreciate what is there. We constantly battle eachother because of our sex, our race, our religion, our social class, etc. At this point, we need to realize that we are all Americans and we are all in this together. We should support, love, and be there for eachother through all of this to the best of our capacity.

i am sitting here staring at this tattoo design I planned on getting soon. its a red white and blue shield witht he word independence written accross. This design gained so much more meaning today. Today we were attacked. Today us as americans were attacked and killed in our own homes. I heard on the news this was being compared to pearl harbor. This is worse than pearl harbor. Pearl Harbor was a military target. Soldiers were killed there. This was a terroristic attack on innocent american civilians. This is still like a dream. Its just now starting to sink in. To most of the world, Canada comes off as an
oppressed neighbour to the usa. Many countries

You seem to be one of the most logical people here. I agree with everything you have to say. There CANNOT be a war in this case. All of you who plan on joining the army for your chance to take a crack at these guys are wasting your time. Disregarding how long it take to get through boot camp, and the likeliehood that by the time you were finished the conflict would be "resolved", we don't send in troops anymore. We drop bombs.

My dad tried to tell me that we didn't celebrate after Nagasaki or Hiroshima. He used his histroy major status as proof, until I pulled out one of his own histroy tapes that showed people celebrating in the streets of New York after the news of the first atmic detonation.

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Sept. 11) - Three hijacked planes crashed into major U.S. landmarks on Tuesday, destroying both of New York's mighty twin towers and plunging the Pentagon in Washington into flames, in an unprecedented assault on key symbols of U.S. military and financial power.

Loss of life was expected to be catastrophic from the collapse of the giant towers of the World Trade Center where roughly 40,000 people work. The two 110-story towers collapsed one at a time in a huge cloud of smoke and fire two hours after the initial impacts.

Desperate people were seen jumping out of the burning towers before they collapsed.

President George W. Bush, facing the first big test of his eight-month presidency, called the deliberate aerial assaults an "apparent terrorist attack," and vowed to hunt down and punish those responsible.

Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Nebraska Republican, called the attacks, "this generation's Pearl Harbor." The European Union's External Relations Commissioner said the attacks constituted "an act of war by madmen."

The attacks, the worst on the U.S. mainland in modern history, plunged the country into chaos and panic, paralyzing communications, forcing the evacuation of key buildings, closing markets, schools and even theme parks. Sirens screamed as terrified people rushed through the streets seeking safety.

BUSH WHISKED TO UNDISCLOSED LOCATION

Even America's pastime could not escape. Major League Baseball canceled all 15 of Tuesday's scheduled games. The Walt Disney Co. temporarily shut its U.S. parks and began assessing global operations.

Bush cut short a trip to Florida and flew at high altitude to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana for a brief stop before taking off again for an undisclosed destination. He said he had taken all appropriate security precautions to protect Americans and ensure the functioning of the government.

"Freedom itself was attacked but freedom will be protected," he told reporters. The U.S. military was put on the highest alert at home and abroad.

Early speculation about the source of the attack centered on Saudi-born guerrilla leader Osama Bin-Laden.

Airline officials and other authorities said four planes -- two from American Airlines, two from United Airlines -- had crashed. They said the four were carrying a total of 233 passengers, 25 flight attendants and eight pilots.

"This is total war, I think this is a wake-up call for America. This is a war, a real war," said Alabama Republican Sen. Richard Shelby.

Vice President Dick Cheney and key congressional leaders, were taken to a secure location, apparently not in Washington.

New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said there had been a "tremendous number of lives lost" in the assault on his city. But five hours after the attack, the full dimensions of the tragedy were still far from clear. One TV station reported that 200 firefighters were missing in the World Trade Center.

Experts said it could be days before the full death toll was established.

As international flights were diverted to Canada, the Federal Aviation Administration shut down all flights in the United States. Part of the land border between the United States and Mexico was closed.

HOSPITALS OVERWHELMED

Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and gunmen at refugee camps in Lebanon fired into the air to celebrate news of the attacks.

Hospitals in New York were overwhelmed with patients as a massive cloud billowed into the blue skies over Manhattan where the city skyline had been dramatically and permanently altered.

"Hundreds of people are burned from head to toe," said Dr. Steven Stern at St. Vincent's Hospital in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of lower Manhattan.

"The whole of lower Manhattan is coated in half an inch of dust," Reuters reporter Daniel Sternoff said.

The attacks forced the evacuation of all government buildings in Washington, including the White House and other tall buildings across the country, cut cell phone communications on the East Coast and grounded all commercial planes in the United States.

World leaders expressed shock and horror and foreign financial markets fell sharply on news of the attacks. The London FTSE index plummeted 5.7 percent, while oil prices spiked up. U.S. markets were closed.

Early reports said all three planes used in the attacks were hijacked, one of them from Boston and one from Washington. It was not immediately known who flew the planes and what happened to them.

The day of horror began just before 9 a.m. in New York when the first plane plowed into the south tower of New York's World Trade Center, as thousands of workers were streaming into the building to begin their day.

HUGE HOLE IN TWIN TOWER

It opened a huge hole near the top of the building. Two hours later, the whole building in which thousands of people work, collapsed on itself in a huge cloud of smoke and fire.

TV stations caught the second plane plowing into the second of the twin towers, exploding in a fire ball a few minutes after the first impact. That building caved in about an hour after the first.

Shortly afterward, a third plane crashed into or near the Pentagon in Washington, throwing people off their feet inside the building and setting off a massive fire.

Amid confusion, news organizations reported another explosion at the State Department, but that was later denied. Other reports spoke of another hijacked plane heading toward the capital.

All government buildings including the White House and the Capitol and the CIA were evacuated. The FAA grounded all planes in the United States, an unprecedented step.

"It's clear that this is terrorist-related, we're not sure who is responsible," one official said of the Pentagon attack.

"We have not seen an attack like this, certainly not since Pearl Harbor," said Adm. Robert Natter, commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, which was dispatching ships and aircraft for air defense, along with amphibious troops, to Washington and possibly New York.

The attacks took place near the anniversary of the 1978 Camp David accords that led to peace between Israel and Egypt.

Bin Laden, a Saudi millionaire and Islamic militant, believed to be in exile in Afghanistan, was blamed for the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in which 224 people died.

An Arab journalist with access to bin Laden told Reuters in London the renegade Saudi had warned three weeks ago of an "unprecedented attack" on U.S. interests.

Washington has offered a $5-million reward for his capture. George Tenet, director of the CIA, said this week the tall, thin Saudi was the most immediate and serious threat to U.S. security.

Beside the embassy bombings, U.S. officials link bin Laden to last year's bombing of a U.S. Navy ship in Yemen and with foiled plots in the United States and Jordan at the turn of the millennium.

"Since 1998, bin Laden has declared all U.S. citizens legitimate targets of attack," he said.

The previous worst act of terrorism in the United States was the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City in which 168 people died. Timothy McVeigh was executed for that attack earlier this year

A previous bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 resulted in six deaths and hundreds of injuries.

I see where youre coming from. But my point is this. It is practically impossible to kill only the small group of people responsible (if it is indeed a small group). But we MUST retaliate..the people who were behind this must be destroyed ASAP. Does everyone at least agree on that? Im seriously worried if someone doesnt even agree on that. We might have to take out some innocent people, and thats a damn shame, no doubt. But its our only choice. I usually despise the pictures, in this case I'm willing to suspend my general predjudice and view the dog as a symbol of America, and as a reminder that even with all this happening, the dog is oblivious, it sits and loves humans, which is probably not a bad thing about now, the dog represents the innocents, and it's own innocence... overall I find the picture to be strangely comforting.

I woke up with my Uncle calling to say, "I hope this is some freak accident and not a new form of terrorism." New form? Right...

As I left my house, the second plane had just hit the other tower, and no one knew anything yet...not even what type of plane it was. I got into class about 10am...half empty. Got out at 11am...a hundred people watching this one tv on the floor. In the spanse of an hour, the world trade center's towers were no longer there. From a bridge at school you could see smoke billowing up downtown and throngs of people walking uptown. I stayed til about 2pm, then attempted to catch the train in to the outer boroughs. Everyone seemed odd...like if they weren't down there, or didn't no someone down there, it hadn't hit them yet. Everyone was making commuting jokes, propelling themselves into packed trains and such.

I'm waiting to see the New York skyline minus two of the tallest buildings in the city. The world changed today...time to see how much.

All New Yorkers I know are present and accounted for. That says nothing about their friends' friends though.

i am in true grief. i had several very close friends and family involved in this whole shit. i thought my girlfriend was dead several times. works 4 blocks from the joint and just came out of the subway at the time the first plane hit. was talking with her on the cell; she's crying and i hear fucking world war through the phone i'm in panic crying. the cell cut out when the first tower fell. no contact for 3 hours; crying. sister less than 1/4 mile from dc disaster. close friend in merreel lynch building right next to towers. acquaintance actually in the second tower. by the grace of god, all are okay. as far as we know. please stop arguing. today has been too much for me. thousands dead and i'm so sad. i feel so beat emotionally- feel like i've been up for 17 days straight. i'm sorry. this is too much. please everyone be ok...

That might be the next step at least while America is still on Def Con 4 D(The stage right before all out WAR). Many countries in Europe including Israel in the Middle East keep armed guards on ALL flights to protect the passengers.
