do you think that with only 26 letters in the english alphabet that its natural for people to have same names to write, or that we should STILL be able to come up with new ones even with all the writers nowadays? (on a side note: ive been writing for almost 10 years and all 3 of my names ive found in other cities...go figure)

I was thinking about that a lot lately.
I make pieces under lots of names. But i concider one of those names my main one. I am not really happy about it, its a common name, i probably share it with a bunch of other writers around the globe.
And i dont really care, i have it from when i started 7 years ago.
So its my name, i dont care.
The thing that bothers me the most is that in the quest of originality people choose really silly names, a 3/4 letter combo that doesnt mean anything and sounds ugly.
My name is one of those although not to original.
You mentioned 26 letters, fuck that.
Cause at the end we are talking about the same 10 letters combined in 3 or 4 letter words...Not to many alternatives right?
Why? cause not to many writers have the balls to rock a Q or an X.
But thats straight formalistic shit, names are not copyrighted as walls arent also. They're locked by style.
If your pieces under a _______ name lack style, your name will be taken by someone that actually deserves it just like your piece on a wall that will get covered really soon if its not able to prevent it.
And to get back to your question,
I think we earn our names, everytime i see the word "amaze" i automaticly think of AMAZE however that doesnt happen with other words that someone might be writing.
I dont know if i feel that AMAZE is one of the coolest names a writer could have because its a good name or because the person behind is one of the coolest writers. The one thing i know is that the name is taken cause noone can write it without thinking of "AMAZE".
And if you write SD56NHQ and you're biting you still aint shit.
I say, pick a name that you like and actually can work on without thinking of someone elses stuff and do your best to hold it.
Its like Highlander:

i understand what you're saying, but i'd much rather see that, providing the right attitude was behind it. i mean if you're trying to be thug with a name like Glyxinixlpx then it won't really happen.
Although look an SNX in NYC on the 7line. It stands for Schonix! That kid destroys...seriously a fill-in AT LEAST on EVERY SINGLE ROOFTOP on the 7. No joke.
I'd rather see someone right something that makes them happy (hence the signature), no matter how silly it is. Don't try and please others or worry if it sounds fresh enough. (Someone in Nyc rights Fresh...and yes his stuff is).

On a sidenote,
I was also thinking about countries and places that have a different alphabet,
Speak another language.
It seems that graffiti as we know it is strictly associated with the English alphabet.
Maybe its because we often judge the style of a letter based on its history of transformations.

...i was actually thinking about this the other day too...i was wondering if certains letters or combinations or words are intrinsically more pleasing to the human mind, and thus thats why you get the same letters and names(assuming you could hold the biting variable constant)...like on a deep subconcious level, jung style...i dunno just a thought.....

on of my friends in jersey told me about someone that writes casek spelled kasec...so, i guess it's only expected that things will go this way...i was thinking about a new style today, but it might end up biting someone else's style...i'm just not sure...the thing is, it doesn't involve letters at all, more or less, the illusion of letters....hmm....

ha ha...well, i thought about it a little more before actually emailing this person concerning the developement of the style...anyway, it all revolves around my wireframes project...i'll kind of break it down for you guys...i noticed these great curves using simply straight lines to make up the curves..anyway, i started thinking about swooshes and swoops...it's hard to explain fully, i've been thinking about this "alien flower" i saw the other night on some sci-fi channel program, and the wireframes came into play when i realized that the curves kind of fit.

^^ i have written my name backward before
i have only seen one person w/ my name, and at this point in my graf career as an old fogie and not at the top of my game, she'd rip me...... i did see one other name similar, different letter structure though, not jsut by one letter either, cause that doesn't count. but i did see somebody w/ that screen name and 0 post here on the writers forum list of people signed in yesterday. damn biters. ahhh i have a name up my sleeve that no one writes as well, well that i have seen at least. i'll sell it to a newbie.......

pretty much any name now a days has already been taken or is taken,
and any new name you think is original i bet you someone has already thought of it and has written it. so just write what you want to write

There are thousands of words in the english language not including names that dont mean anything. Someone needs to be creative!
if you don't have ideas for names in english you can always try something in other language, or mixing it or deforming it. Ok is not graff related, but, for example theres a punk band here called "the weebegones" i don't remember what wor in english they took and diform and they came up whit that name that dos't mean anything:D

people have and always will be writing the same old shit. I am sure you could come up with new and more original names, but cats like dose, syco, flame, and other wack shit.

but seriously, there's a few Lens' out there but it doesn't bother me. it just makes me concentrate that much harder on my art so i stand out from the others.

for my name i got a good name its common but my signature is a short form and its my own style, and then i just paint random words and inside jokes from my friends,
but if you got a name and ur not big and dont really want to be, so if your going to be local just dont take a name from a local artist, but you got to think of your own
malis
10-27-2004, 11:59 PM
its cool to be original, but its also cool to bite. just make sure its not someone big, or local. and dont copy the kings styles and use there name, or else all the local kids will try and bite off your toy ass.
oh and if you cant think of a name do what i do and sound it out. and then use wrong letters. cuz tahts always cool
furie. malis. its all in good fun.

i write noise...
I say just pick the letters you like the most. Not too many of them, arrange them in a way you can flow good and go fromt here. try and get allthe ideas you can from it and all. It doesn't have to be a real word in any language, and it doesn't even have to be speakable (eg. XBCR or somethin). It took me a long time to come up with my word; I changed it a lot when I started out. Your word is your style, so yo should prolly develop some style before you go picking some fresh name you want as yours.
