while walking down the tracks today i look over along the tracks and theres a coupler just laying there then about 5 min later i see a huge wrench it must have weighed 50 or 60 pounds i guess it was for working on trains and right next to the wrench there was 4 books from the Milwaukee railroad on parts of trains there like 50 pages about working on trains it was weird because trains go real fast through there they never are going slow or stop and theres like tress and bushes on each side, i wonder how this stuff got there.. i have found other stuff in the like shoes and clothes.. oh yeah i found a BNSF hard hat once.. share any weird stuff you have found along the tracks

found somthing the other day that kind of spooked me out. I tripped over this binder with a big thick manual for some kind of "self contained breathing apparatus" with a generic company name and some long product number next to it. the cover had a picture of a guy wearing the device, with a huge face mask and all kinds of hoses and a big tank strapped to his back. Probably fell out of one of the MOW cars that they have stored there to be scrapped....

No mystery here. Those knuckle couplers break off once in a while. They weigh about 80 lbs. One must have broken off, they stopped the train, got out the tools and the manuals, and put the new one on. Then in their hurry to leave they left the other stuff behind (or, that wrench and those manuals were the ones that proved useless among those that were tried, so they left them behind).

If by "5 or 10 minutes" you mean "much further down the tracks", that's no mystery either. The train would still take a long time to stop after the incident, so the repair could have been done quite a ways away from where the knuckle dropped.
I don't know if it would happen at 30mph. I was under the impression that couplers more commonly snap during humping operations. Of course, there's always the various shocks associated with slack action when the train changes speed, so it's possible.

While i was walking the tracks in search of layups i kept seeing grocery carts and tires and shit, now i know this is not umcommon shit on the tracks but it was like 30 minutes downt he tracks, who would carrie that shit that far? but i always find those little juice bottles and i found a box of orange rusto cans of to the side were they were doin construction. it was a box of 6 full cans of caution orange, it was great. and i found a box car, i was walking the tracks and out of no were way back in the middle of some woods theres this box car, only one and theres no layups around there, why would it just be setting there, its been on there for like a week now, if its there two much longer ima paint it, it has a chisme piece on one side already. later CLUEone

when I was in Buffalo, we walked some tracks leading out of a very large conrail yard and we found various dead Deer. These thinga must have gotten SMOKED because they were shredded, it was disgusting. We found shopping carts, all sorts of metal poles, empty milk jugs, airbrake hoses, rats everywhere...

Up here in the pacific northwest though, we generally find things like workers gloves, water bottles, cupplings, airbrake hoses again, various trash that pedestrians leave laying on the tracks while taking a shortcut down the lines, grain everywhere, always, falling out of the hoppers. Beer cans, obviously.. paint cans sometimes. I don't know how often I find myself in a yard or layup, or even on a line of track and i find myself cleaning up some other idiots lids, or cans, or anything else. Its fucking ridiculous.

Kaes the little mounds of sugar are from hoppers that are leaking. it's not just sugar you can find all kinds of stuff that they carry. i've seen several piles of tiny pieces of broken glass all different colors. i'm guessing they came from a hopper too.

this summer, while walking the tracks...i found a subwoofer, a clogged rusto fat, and on this bridge, there was graff saying something about reefer smokers. it was written in like 1988 or something. i also found the electrical thing on the rails for the little stop sign at the rxr crossing. i couldnt figure out how 2 work it tho. i alsso found signs of a big "W" on them. they had bullet holes in em.

a friend of mine had told me about a good bridge to catch some flicks and piece...well he told me to run across the trussel (i think that's the proper name for the railroad bridges) and about 400 yards up there should be the underpass. well im walking through this rail in the woods at 10:30 PM, i can't see shit, and im weilding a can of spraypaint in my beanie to beat the shit out of anyone that approached me..and i usually don't get scared in situations like this. well i found the bridge and i got closer and i coulda sworn things...i walked a little closer and there was probably 5-10 people sittin around a small fire jabberin'. i just walked through and minded my business...i didn't notice shit for graffiti...just drunks. god what a great guy to lead me to such a place!

I found a pair of 1st class needle-nose pliers some UP worker must have dropped, and some "Work Safely" UP-logo work gloves. I find hardhats from time-to-time, but they are usually broken or scuffed up very badly. I see fish plates and tie-plates all the time, and spikes. Sometimes I'll see a long 18" or 24" tie-plate in a jungle, being used as a griddle over the fire.
Around the Houston area we see hundreds and hundreds of blue plastic water bottles. It's real hot here in the summer, and the train crews drink a lot of water and then pitch the bottles all over the place.
The grossest thing I've found turned out to be a very large, dead German Shepherd wrapped up in plastic. I thought it was a dead body and called the cops. They were kind of pissed, but all I could think about was that maybe it was a dead kid. One cop told me "I would have been suspicious too, with it all wrapped up like that." It stunk bigtime like death. Gross.

As i got close i see its 4 black guys all about 20 years old or so drinking some colt 45 or what ever they drink. with my snow hat with the rock in it i walk past them one guy says "yo nigaa you lost or some thing" i just kept on walk with out looking back acting like i didn't hear them, then i hear " hey motherfucka we talkin to you" i turn and say I'm just going home taking a short cut. they stop and start to walk towards me so i start to walk away they start yelling stop get back here we just want to talk at you for a minute. fellin I was about to me mugged or beaten I took off, 2 guys chased me the other two stayed back, I was running as hard as I could, I was thinking in the back of my mind not to trip over a railroad tie or something. I ran through some trees and bushes and up this hill that lead to more tracks thats when they gave up on chasing me. I still kept on running in till I got to a small restaurant. I could not believe what happened or that I out ran 2 black guys. And to all of you that say I should have stayed and fought them off I laugh at you. out here in Chicago we got metra commuter trains that travel between 60-70 mph in some spots and for about a mile stretch there are woods on both sides lots of deer cross the tracks to get the other side a lot end up getting hit and you can imagine what a deer looks like after being hit by a train going 60+ most of the time you only see pieces :dazed:

VisualJAZZ--it's probably not a "hobo hammer" because it weighs too much. Hobos travel very light. More than likely, it is a tool lost by either the MoW crew, working on rails or switches, or a tool lost by a car knocker out of his tool box on the back of an ATV.
I travel all around the Houston area, around all rail yards and major lay-ups and junctions. I've never run into any tramps that carried much in the way of heavy tools or serious weapons. Most hobos carry a knife of some kind, or maybe a small pistol, like a .22 or a .25, that's about it. Pistols bigger than that are too heavy and too expensive. What they usually do carry is a bottle of T-bird or Night Train or Mad Dog, LOL.

Sunday we were scouting spots here in Houston, and at Tower 30 we found a dead horse laying on it's side in a ditch by the tracks with it's legs sort of sticking up in the air. This was not somewhere out in the country, mind you, but right square in the middle of Harrisburg (a part of Houston, on the east side,) not fifty feet from several homes and back yards. We couldn't figure out if it got hit, or was dumped there or what. We also saw this crazy yuppie professional guy dressed in white walking shorts, tennis shoes and a red-and-blue striped shirt, with a cane tucked in his belt, that was walking the rail lines. Later on that day, down at T&NO Junction, the EXACT SAME GUY came zooming past us, still walking, three miles away. We stopped him to ask him what he was doing and he said he was just doing it for the exercise. He thought we worked for the railroad, and was worried we were going to turn him in, LOL.

i always find the normal crap, but one time i climbed up in between these two spans of highway high above the tracks and right in between where they meet there was a 57 chevy stepside truck that was torn to peices and rusted as hell. it had definitley been there for many years, and i highly doubt that the driver or passengers survived. it was spooky.

If you return that EOT aka (F.RE.D) to the yard office you could basically get a free pass to ask any questions you have about your yard....Those things run around 4g's they tell us..It would be a good way to get yer foot in the door and ask questions...Just pretend youre a concerned foamer......

in connecticut yesterday evening painting freights. there were these large propane tank looking things next to a section of unused tracks that had some weeds and bushes growing out of it. They were rusted out and I wanted to paint a container next to them. I walked towards it and started hearing a hissing noise, a took a step closer and smelled this scent i cant describe but it took my breath away and i needed to run backwards to catch some fresh air. I have no idea what was in those tanks but it scared the shit out of me.

Holy fuck, four grand, i think it would be a good idea to return it, i just don't really know how i would go about it. Just say i was walking along the tracks and found it, idk though. Thats kinda like admiting i was trespassing. i kinda have a feeling they would just be like thanks for returning it and send me off, they might even think i stole it. Maybe i could bring my camera and act like a railfan/photographer. Any more advice?

These tanks (If near a power operated switch point) are filled with flamable gas...Usually propane..During snow and cold winter months, these tanks will ignite small heat sources near the power operated switch points to keep switches lined tight and with no snow or ice packed in between..Thats crazy you mentioned this because I was on dead tracks about 2 weeks ago a noticed a few tanks that were atleast 50-60 years old and we all commented on their age and status of decay, rusting through damn near...And I'm sure they were never emptied when the line was shut down....

Just walk in there like you own the place...Just make up where you found it,OFF railroad property if that makes you feel more comfortable...I'm sure they wont care much about where it was found as much as the fact it was even found at all....Just ask for the Train Master or Yard Master or talk to the first guy you see that doesnt look like a total prick.
