Since we have so many Virginia heads on this board and several other people had suggested making a Virginia thread for everyone to add onto, here you go. I'm just trying to get this started with some stuff I have from Virginia Beach. Every day I'll try to add another city to the thread and hopefully other people will contribute. I know some older Virginia heads looks at this board and I'm hoping you will post some old stuff or maybe give some history lessons. That would make my fucking day. If anyone has flicks of this wall i would love to see them. I remember going to it several times but never with a camera. After a while it pretty much just turned into a free for all instead of a production. they buffed it in about 1998 cause it was getting out of hand i guess.

IT ISN'T THE best area of the city to live in. People even call it dangerous. It's the kind of place where you might find a few obscene words scrawled on the sides of buildings. But in this inner-city stands a wall - a wall with a message of hope.


Like so many Saturday mornings, 17-year-old Conrad ******* climbs a ladder that leans against the wall of the Hunton YMCA in Norfolk. With a can of blue Krylon spray paint in his right hand and another in his back left pocket, he is ready to make his art, his feelings, his emotions come alive. He is ready to do graffiti.

The weather is perfect for graffiti. Sun, blue sky and cotton ball clouds hang overhead. The parking lot is silent except for the sounds of spray paint hitting the 24-foot wall and the rattle of the spray cans whenever they need shaking. Sea gulls circle overhead, as if attracted to the newly painted shades of blue, purple, white and turquoise.

Conrad begins his graffiti after reaching the top of the ladder. With the can of blue spray paint he carefully outlines a letter ``T'' at the top of the wall.

Spray. . . pause. . . spray. . . the movements become repetitious, rhythmic. His message will eventually read ``The Future's in Our Hands.''

Since the explosion of graffiti hit the Kempsville area in Virginia Beach this winter, officials have cracked down on spray paint bandits and labeled the act as vandalism. But there are others who label graffiti as an expression of the individual, a form of art.

The Hunton YMCA and a group of teens who attend the Unity Renaissance Church in Chesapeake, recognized graffiti as art, took a negative idea, made it positive and made it legal. The wall is now open to graffiti artists.

``We're not here to decorate,'' said project sponsor Mary Denyes. ``We're trying to involve the community and learn from each other.''

Along with youths who travel to the wall from Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, the graffiti group also includes residents from communities near the YMCA.

Their mission is to repaint the YMCA wall and other vandalized areas of Norfolk with a new message promoting a positive outlook for the future. So instead of just being a wall, the Hunton YMCA wall is now a palette of interlocking hopes and dreams. Outlines of puzzle pieces are painted on it. Some are blank, some are filled with self expression.

On this sunny Saturday, just below Conrad, a friend on a shorter ladder is spraying an inspirational word in light blue and gray. Below, a group of teenage girls fills a puzzle piece with purple, blue and black hand prints. They giggle when they look at each other's color doused hands.

Three little girls with Rasta braids approach from the neighboring projects. It isn't long before they each are filling in their own little piece of the wall with hues of their feelings. It is graffiti. It is art.

The legal graffiti project wasn't easy to get started. It took the work of Denyes; Vera Franklin, director of resident initiatives of the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority; and Reginald L. Townes, director of the Hunton Y. After the OK from Hunton's board of directors and a go-ahead from Norfolk officials, the project got under way in May of '93.

The NRHA pays for the paint and ladders through a drug elimination grant. The artists are at the wall every Saturday, weather permitting, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For now the message reads, ``The Future's In,'' but the completed message will say, ``The Future's In Our Hands.'' These words were spoken by the Rev. Alen Ferebee of the Unity Renaissance Church.

``What were trying to say is that we're looking at the younger kids and if we don't help them straighten out their future and put the future in their hands. . . we are going to be in worse shape than we are now,'' Ferebee said.

Ferebee said that graffiti is simply ``an art that a lot of people haven't accepted.''

Conrad, the junior at Virginia Beach's Bayside High School who is painting the main message, agrees. He puts graffiti into two categories: legal and illegal.

``There's the graffiti that's for the adrenaline rush, to do it quick and leave, knowing you left something there to be there. . . like making your mark in life,'' Conrad said.

Then there's his kind of art.

``My type of graffiti is branching off from the original (illegal) style of graffiti. I'm putting in more of my inside feelings,'' Conrad said. With legal graffiti, an artist has more time to think things through, he added, though there is still some spontaneity.

``I just create a shape and then it ends up becoming a certain letter form, a certain word, then I just start expanding from that shape,'' Conrad said.

Although legal graffiti art has now had its debut in Norfolk, ``illegal'' graffiti is still widespread for a lot of reasons.

Denyes, who promotes the legal variety, said that graffiti can be an outlet for anger. If parents do not provide the proper channels for youths to talk about their feelings, then they ``will resort to writing their feelings out,'' she said.

Bobby *******, 17, a junior at Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach, who also works his graffiti on ``the wall,'' said that some teens do graffiti because they see it on music videos and think it's cool.

``Some figure out that it is a form of art and they want to better themselves and make it look good and be proud of it rather than just trying to get your name or tag up more than somebody else,'' Bobby said.

He also said that gang-related ``taggers'' don't love the art enough to stick with it.

Conrad advises graffiti artists to use good judgment when choosing their canvas. ``Go with your intuition and ask yourself, `Is this an appropriate area?' Graffiti writers need to come together and start having respect for people's property,'' Conrad said.

He also said that the area cities should be ``letting more people create,'' because it could cut down on violence. ``Maybe graffiti could be the solution - I mean would you rather have physical wars or style wars?''

The Hunton wall artists are not the only ones making graffiti art. The Jan. 20 edition of ``Entertainment Tonight'' showed Angela Lansbury spray painting her set for an upcoming episode of ``Murder She Wrote.''

The show is about a graffiti artist who witnesses a hit-and-run car accident. The artist reveals clues through his graffiti art, because he does not want to make himself known. The show will air next month.

At Franklin High, seniors traditionally spray their college logos on a nearby barn. ``It started as a tradition about 25 years ago. The kids used to go out and paint the barn at night without permission,'' said Elliot Whitfield, who has lived in Franklin for 46 years. He can see the barn clearly from his front porch.

``Ten years ago my boss, S.W. Rawles, said to let them paint it under supervision. I think that graffiti is a form of art, and if you saw the barn you would think so too,'' Whitfield said.

Rawles owns the barn and is chairman of the board of a local fuel and gasoline distributor.

Those who view graffiti as an art have their own ideas about where it is headed.

Hunton YMCA director Townes foresees graffiti contests and graffiti as a growing art form. He refers to the Wyland Whaling Wall in downtown Norfolk and said that people see it as art.

``Expressions of art don't have to be negative,'' Townes said. ``Positive art can grow and be duplicated easy. Graffiti will take off in about a year or two with further projects.''

Even now, local graffiti artists are finding meaning in how and why they do the art.

Conrad said that when he does graffiti, it becomes a ``performance, a dance.''

``The way your energy goes into it, the way you move your arm, the way you fill in quickly. . . it's an art. The process is an art. . . . I wish people can see it more as an art form than a destructive thing.''

And for Conrad, the art is alive.

``Feel it,'' he says reaching out and pressing his hand against a blank puzzle piece on the YMCA wall. ``Come on, just feel it. . . feel it breathe. . . the wall is alive. . . listen. . . it talks.'' He presses his ear against the piece.

I stand there, reluctant at first, a paintbrush in one hand and a can of green paint in the other. Slowly I feel the wall. It is warm and smooth. I press my ear to the wall and listen.

``Can you feel it?'' Conrad asks.

``I hear something,'' I answer.

``What?''

``It's saying . . . Michelle paint me.'' Conrad chuckles and gives me a pat on the back before he once again climbs his ladder. I start painting and began to understand. This is art. This is graffiti.
