again these are all stolen from hifiart.com. there needs to be a collection of tie shit on here so please add to this. if you werent in sf when he was bombing, you might not even know how influenced by him you are. since sf gets a rediculous amount of magazine coverage for such a small scene you probably have seen and been affected by ties work. he was amazing. i have NEVER seen some one who bombed as hard as him. i know tie spent some time in nyc. nyc is a land of throwups with a far more refined culture to its styles and techniques. i dont necesarily believe tie was the first to do any of the following but here are some elements to his bombing that he definately blew up on the west coast. things like
-rocking buff spots hard regardless, showing everyone just how random the buff was at the time. some of the grayest walls were running for months with tie or seo outlines bouncing up and down as he made his path.
-the one line throwup............. done before but speed was the name of his game. he was bombing tie with mq who has a much simpler throwup and you could tell he was keeping up. even became more aerodynamic with seo and its 3 sweeping lines that made them so fresh, you could see the motion of his bombing and it was fucking exciting.
-painting through the window grates. GNARLY spots on market and mission.
-doing such "weird" (at the time) tags at a point in sg graff where a lot of people were still trying to perfect their twist hands or trying ot be gangsters with their cholo letters.
- doing the, "backwards reversed inside the windows of the building you just broke into" trick. on one of the tightest buildings ever on market with fate 5 stories of windows with like 7 on each floor. (i couldn't find pictures of this spot. anyone got it?) many people would do this after, creating a whole new kind of shot to seek out.
-making a point of painting over multiple surfaces. not fitting into the typical spaces everyone would gently place their graffiti into. tie would blast over the brick wall onto the glass door filling inover the door frame and circling your doorbell with the dot of his "e". and all seemingly on purpose with speed. tie created the most amazing compositions on the walls he painted, seeking out interesting things to paint over and juxtapose into his outlines. sometimes not filling in so you could see just what it was that attracted him to the spot.
-the 3 dot halo on your throwup or tag. or adding the three lines to the halo on your tag. (he definately didnt do this first. but after he was rocking it it worked its way in to a lot of peoples repertoirs.)
-connecting the lines of your throwup to show the overlap of your next letter. (do you know what i mean?) look at the way the i is both behind and in front of his t. this trick was later adopted by fate. to place his t behind and infront of his throw. very fresh.
-leaving the part of his t un-outlined. you know the spiral part. i definately saw twist dothis on the west coast years before but since tie ive seen an awefull lot of people utilizing that spiral or letting that fill mist into the background unrestrained by an outline.
-just an overall trend to doing what at the time were considered weird and ny looking throwups. now it seems everyone has a throwup in this style. remember when west coast throwups sucked? people would do those throws where the top of everyletter had the same wispy point thing? i remember, i used to do them.
so many people were so motivated to rock during his reign and after he was killed. i remember people even saying things like " so and so is just trying to paint like tie." or "its seems just cause tie started rocking so and so has been painting so much more." it was funny that painting a lot was "trying to belike tie" guys like kept abandoned anal german thin tip piecing to become a throwup monster. (also very influential in the school of what many would call "ugly") or how about all the ocho no 3d outline stuff that popped up, and later people like kers lewy and flare trying to take it to and even more rediculous level rocking madman stocktip fillins in the hottest spots. i dont think im taking away from any of these peoples bombing by saying tie had a hand in it.
this is kinda long winded. but i just hope some people can get a taste of how fucking amazing he was. i remember specifically going downtown and thinking "fuck!, this guy is going out every night" his throwups always had the emotion, movement, and feeling of BOMBING!! laced with adrenaline that was completely contagious.
when he was shot it seemed almost fitting in a horrific way. it made you wonder just how long could he keep it up. what way could this story end. a lot of bombers age into the cynical piecers that they are now but that just didnt make sense for tie. but i can imagine he would have excelled onto the next level as well. he was murdered tragically young. he never saw 19.
his killer will get his in some way some form, karma's a reality and it will catch up................................................ .
tie influenced my graff and my life, yours too and you might not even know it. thanks for listening

I never personally knew Tie(RIP) but i did meet him in Frisco at the Coors Factory wall a couple of months before his death. I met Tie and Beneto(RIP). They were pretty coo guys one of my boys was with me that inherated the name Sesk that was passed down to him from Tie. Its a trip that i met these 2 guys and they both happened to have an unfortunate future. I've been seeing Tie change in time. Imember when he used to live in Santa Clara 408 and was rockin Sesk REDS RTC crews. The TA was gettin rocked his infamous Sesk pole shots with spray paint were dope. Even when i got locked up at the Juvenile Hall In San Jose in my cell on the steel window pane there was a TIE scribed in it. Fuck it sucks that someone who was really putting it down 200% had to leave us. RIP TIE RIP BENETO....

TIE is a king forever, We all used to go on extravegant bus bombing missions to go buy a $3 sack in downtown SJ and TIE would get the mexican fools to always hook it up because they thought this chinese dude was "funny" he punked them all, he always would kick you down something he stole when he met up with you, he would show up at your house to take "bong rips" at 7:00 am in the morning and was to busy grilling paper to use the carb. he will casually take your black book and grill 64% of the book with layered thowups. when you are with JTie bombing you go the extra mile. sometimes you just want to sock him sometimes you want to give him a hug, he was about uniting people together to take the city(where ever he was at at the time) down, kill shit and destroy all, such a in depth personality that forced you to do your best in real time settings. I wouldnt be the writer I am today if I didnt have the pleasure of knowing and putting in work with such a Individual and just about everyone I know who I met who knows Jon feel the same way. Respect is due to a true King and the appitamy of a Graffiti machine with fresh oil, Killer King TieOne Rest In Peace Forever.

I never met TIE...I wish I had..but I got a ton of inspiration and learned alot from his work..his legend and his obvious passion for writing.
I remember looking at city blocks like a tornado had just passed thru..everything..and I mean everything was covered..with pure writing..fast,furious,yet delicately crafted...like the little faces i the "t"..
I also remember putting up a few stickers, only to come back a few hours later to be sidebusted with Tie stickers..It was a nice feeling...
I miss seeing his work. I jocked that kid..he wrecked shop like very, very few..and for that I give utmost respect to...TIE ONE...PURE KING.
Sad to hear of Beneto...
May the fallen LEGENDS live on forever.

Fame Whore,
You are a true idiot. You say no disrespect but you cause disrespect. Your narrow mindedness is something that a graffiti writer, especially, should be past, as we all know what its like to be looked down upon.
Would you have posted something else had Tie conformed to, what in your mind, is cool?

looks like a nerd? In San Francisco not all writers dress like rappers kid. A lot of writers are bike messengers or ride bikes and shit. You just don't know what you are talking about. Messengers wear short pants like tie is wearing so they dont thave to roll them up when they ride. Tie was in THR, a crew notorious for being full writers who ride fixed gears. when he got shot, his bike was found locked up down below the fire escape on the street. A mesh hat? the hat he is wearing is a cycling hat, pleanty of people wear them. Maybe the only writers you know wear Mecca and Triple Five Soul, but last time i checked, writing on walls didn't involve a dress code. basically you are a jackass. you don't know shit about tie, the crews he pushed, San Francisco, or graffiti in general. you're a punk and i don't think you or your opinion are going to win a lot of support here.:heated:

I'm not looking for support, I was looking to give respect to a fallen king.... you're right 200$, I don't know much about tie, sf, messengers, or thr. all I know is what he looked like it the photo and to me he came off nerdish'. I never said he was any better or worse for dressing like that, I just said it was a style I'm not accustom to. this is lame, no beef in a death sticky. sorry for all of this but I think it's not as big as you made it....

Graffiti artist who was shot 'told the world to live'
By Spie One
Editor's note: Graffiti artist Tie One (Jon Lim) was shot to death March 18 in San Francisco. The following article, a tribute to Tie One, was submitted by a friend of his, Spie One.
Tie loved graffiti. He lived graffiti. Writers will say they live graffiti or graffiti is their life, but they are lying to themselves. When hit with the question, "Would you die over graffiti?," they have to take a step back and think about it. Tie found what he lived for -- and someone killed him for doing it.
Graffiti permeated this 18-year-old's body like soy sauce soaks into rice. Tie's blood veins flowed with permanent ink, like Rustoleum paint, with pure, unrestricting self-expression. Graffiti's loud and angry reaction to the backward system in which we live sprang from every step he took.
Tie's response is seen -- on the bus, on the walls, on doors and in doorways, over "stop" signs, on billboards, on freeway overpasses and even on police paddy wagons. He cared not to be confined by authority, by categorization limitations, by the risk of another beating him in defense of his pride, by the walls of separation that the ruling class constructs in grids that attack our psyches.
Tie bounced off these walls. Hit-ups looking like horizons just altered, invading our spectrum of sight -- big with a fat cap and whipped out in seconds -- like rampaging elephants, round and bold, over windows, entrance ways, poles, what have you -- he bombed. Making a mockery of this bureaucratic world of ridiculous and humiliating laws, of this power structure and its home, Tie was that big rash the beast despised the most.
This beast battled Tie hard with paint buff squads and Good Samaritan "keepers of the state" that took it on their own initiative to shut up this one youth from ever speaking his mind. But he won. Even after the system took him out, he is up everywhere, on the streets and in our hearts.
His last piece had a message on it. It said, "The joy of life," which is something much more sane than systematized school textbooks that teach the youth to honor killers and slave masters as heroes; or a flood of policing in our communities to instill fear into us of even going out of our homes in the name of "stopping drugs and crime"; or Hollywood producers making a special race competition to exhibit the hundreds of ways to practice humiliation of another human, particularly sisters and brothers of our own family. People have been taught how to kill, but Tie told the world to live.
What was Tie doing that was so wrong? Perhaps feeling his own heart?! Responding to his gut-felt soul voice? Is this what was so dangerous? Is this what called upon a bullet to be lodged in the back of his head, triggered by 51-year-old freelance photographer William Porter, who said he felt "threatened" by a young, unarmed boy, 5 feet 5 inches tall and about 90-something pounds?
Tie chose to be a rebel. His rebelliousness made him an enemy of the state. The state made, or rather labeled him, a "graffitiist," a vandal, a criminal, a gangster...one of those "good-for-nothing youth that causes trouble." And in the eyes of the powers that be, they would rather jail or kill individuals like Tie.
A part of me died with Tie. A part of you died with Tie. So when Tie was killed, the powers celebrated with a toast; a toast to the 51-year-old "good ole' American," symbolized by setting him free without the thought to do a police investigation, without the slightest thought of ever charging the man with murder. The freelance photographer has not only shot a picture, but has now shot and killed the next generation. And with the justice system backing him and other opponents of the youth, he, along with all the other vigilantes of the state, lance on their merry way, freely ... .
Tie was not an intruder. He did not break in any person's place, nor did he have the intent to. He carried no threat and he most definitely did not deserve a .38 slug to the back of his head. He was climbing the ladder to fame -- a principle highly regarded as the "American thing to do." He was climbing to scream his presence of "I am here" and stake a claim as a free-spirited person in this jail called America.
What writer do you know that took the bus with the most stops across America to get to the graffiti Mecca, New York, just so he could bomb along the whole way? Who do you know that ever survived getting shocked by the third rail? What writer ran from cops after getting up, jumping off a building, breaking both of his legs and then covering himself in the snow to escape getting busted? What writer got the utmost respects from Queens and Kings internationally and paid his dues to writin' graff? What writer did you ever know that said "I ain't got shit to lose" and would scream at you to go out and do the same!
"BOMB, SPIE, BOMB!" he said to me with a passion of expectation as he left to carry on his journey. I thank you Jon, TIE ONE -- you taught me a lesson on living up to my full potential and I love you for that. You are forever young, and in your memory we will not ever give up the fight.

San Francisco Style.
200$ was on point.
looks like a nerd? In San Francisco not all writers dress like rappers kid. A lot of writers are bike messengers or ride bikes and shit. You just don't know what you are talking about. Messengers wear short pants like tie is wearing so they dont thave to roll them up when they ride. Tie was in THR, a crew notorious for being full writers who ride fixed gears. when he got shot, his bike was found locked up down below the fire escape on the street. A mesh hat? the hat he is wearing is a cycling hat, pleanty of people wear them. Maybe the only writers you know wear Mecca and Triple Five Soul, but last time i checked, writing on walls didn't involve a dress code. basically you are a jackass. you don't know shit about tie, the crews he pushed, San Francisco, or graffiti in general. you're a punk and i don't think you or your opinion are going to win a lot of support here.

That action shot is exactly how I remembered him to look like - the ONE time I ever met him, up on market street. All he wanted to do was crush - he was the most eager and enthusiastic bomber at the time, no doubt about it. This may sound nitpicky - but he rode a little schwinn type bike at the time (not a fixed), and wore that exact same mesh hat, along with hi-water pants. It was the style in these parts, and still is, pretty much. None of the writers I know LOOK a certain way - heck, you're poor, you paint - how glamourous can you really look?
I remember where I was the night I found out he'd been shot. I vividly remember where I was in every instance for the writers and friends who passed away in the last years - Tie, PakOne and Dream - all people that I had short glimpses of them and their personality, their style and skill. It's the moment in time when you know life has changed forever - when you again have to reconcile with the passing of a friend, or even just someone whose mere presence and energy affected you in some way. The older you get, the more frequent these moments take place. All these people fullfilled their destiny in some way or another, and for Tie, I think it was to inspire and enrage - to get the fire going in your gut, to get out there and do your share of damage.
PakOne was a true, sweet and genuine person - and fun to paint and chill with, I was just getting to know him when he died. Tie was coming into his own as well as setting the trend and pace for bombing in SF, everyone loved and respected it - I was happy to see that him and Tase bombed together, as they were about the same age, and almost equals in their unique approach. And Dream is a pioneer and a legend, taken from this world in a most unjust and unfair game - another mystery as to who is responsible and whether they will ever pay for their crime. I had the joy of hanging out with Sope a few times when he lived out here, and remember him to be cheerful and witty. I never met Meta, but her art began to grow on me, and I always loved her letters - painted with such execution and craft.
Rest in Power Tie, Dream, Pak, Sope and Meta.
May Meta's and Dream's children continue on their legacy.

Ive never seen any of tie's work in person, but i very much appreciate the progress he made and the dedication he had for art, and his love graffiti.
Ive caught glimpse's and peice's of Tie's work (both as tie and seo) in magazines and various other places and have always found his style to be one step above every one else's, be it breaking through barriers of restriction of styles (the clich'e) or just painting spots that had gone unseen or noticed for years other bombers.
His Unfortinate death made tie a martyr, but his graffiti left him a legand.

If TIE was some respected community figure that wore a suit to work the dude would be in jail right now for shooting him. Also in that action flick he kinda looks like hes bout to bust out some karate. Whatever man different writters have different styles. I dont knoe how people can bomb in expensive clothing brands. Hell yeah that action shot is hot! Shit like that is what I like most about this forum. Tie is awesome, and unfortunately was taken from this world earlier than we could have hoped.
To judge someone on their physical appearance is silly. I see that photo and I see someone who was out doing exactly what they wanted to do and not giving a fuck about what others thought about it. I appreciate seeing that more than anything else, true spirit shining through. It's sad that he is gone, like many others. I hope that there is a better place.

as i sit here and look at the pictures of the youngest most craziest guy i ever met in mah life that walked the streets of san francisco i shed tears becuase the kid known as jon lim was a true bomber in mah heart he went a extra 150 feet to get a tag on a building i met him once at another writers crib i remember him as a tiny short lil azn kid but this azn kid had da biggest fawkin balls in san francisco he got up lik no other and he also ran from coast to coast catchin wreck in everyone neighborhood...
tie influenced the younger generation of san francisco no doubt about that so did everyone else as in dream, pak, beneto, and many others but tie encouraged people to say fawk the police and go higher and higher when he told me about his new york story it fawkin blew mah mind but it was a war story from a living legend dat was well known coast to coast...
jerk stated some well facts about this kid and i can remembah as a youngin bearly in the game of graff watching tie go higher and higher but i can never see why he wanted to just bomb and bomb and do nothing else but now i see why all he wanted to do was bomb and itz because the streets where his heart was at and he had to share it with the world u know...
so im saying dis one more time much respect to TIEone(jon lim) and of course we all miss you down here on earth and your style has influenced a lot of people and i know ur watching us from some where if its heaven or hell im just lettin you know dat we are all missing your touch and appearence...

i met tie when he was in nyc at a rocksteady anniversary in the south bronx. he was just sitting there handing out his black book (a spanish workbook) for everyone to rock, with a huge smile on his face. i sat down to talk to him when he ushered me outside. i had just started writing and was impressed with him being so original and different especially amongst the hiphop crowd at the event. when we got outside he started doing hollows on the gate of the community center that was hosting the event. he wasn't speaking much, but he handed me the can of yellow topped with a stock tip just as one of the organizers started yelling. i gave him the can back, he put it in his bag and went back in to sit down. he rocked almost every page in my book and gave me a load of stickers.
i had never heard of him before, and after that day i walked around the city for months and even years after to see the damage he did while in town.
its been said, but he was a true king. rip.

man, just found this thread. Jon See Lim was my nephew in traditional chinese culture, not blood, but related just the same. i remember when he first got down with thr and had to skip town so he could beat the rap on some graff cases he had in san jose. he went to chicago and ny to bomb and develop his style- broke his legs jumpin off a roof and hiding in snow to get over, he never even waited for his legs to heal and for the rest of his days walked with a small limp and in pain-but you would never know that cause he wouldnt show it. he would call me every day telling me about what he was hitting and who he was meeting-i used to think he was nuts and was actually really scared for him, sometimes i didnt believe him, he said sometimes he would do twenty throws a day, and twenty AT NIGHT! i couldnt believe that at all.
ok cut it short-heres my tie tales
that guy used to listen to kung fu disco soundtracks in his headphones when he was bombing, some ill bruce lee movie soundtracks and shit.
he one time left me a whole thirty minute message on my machine with that stuff in the background rapping.-what a nut.
when he went to Nyc- he brought 60 mops filled with him, some pens, stickers, and a sweater-just about nothing else.
i was painting a piece once and he rolled me up and started screaming at me at the top of his lungs because i had brushed an outline of his, but then proceded to break me off german thin tips cause he didnt want to see me outlining with stock caps, then twist rolls up and tie starts yelling at him too, llike" you fuckin never go bombin, you need to represent thr barry, i go out every night barry! i go bombing i go tie tie tie tie all over this fuckin city!, then some girl in a car rolls up to the spot, and tie tries to hook me up with her, man it was great, we made peace all together right there, but it seemed like twisto and tie didnt hit it off so great, as it would seem. the night after or so some cat that had funk with twist for some reason rolled up on tie, and this dude was huge! and tie straight said "i got twists back till the day i die!" and spit in dudes face, this dude was twice as big and twice as tall as tie, and tie took one for the team that night, and was still talkin shit on the ground from what i hear.
i visit jon once a year, his parents dont remember me but i visit them infrequently at the bakery and tip a lot.
great thread, love to see more flicks.

You are forever young, and in your memory we will not ever give up the fight.

the first thing i saw last weekend going into SF on the freeway was that big black Seo rooftop...r.i.p
dude, this is funny shit... i was walking down the street in san bruno one day years ago with my friend mike... and this little chinese kid walks up and says, all hyper, "yo, you guys write? i write tie, like this," and bang, whips out a pilot and goes to town on a payphone, right there in front of us, on el camino in broad daylight. it kind of left me speechless. still does. i guess he had a habit of doing that. he was one of the only writers i ever truly mourned, because he was a nice kid, and nobody, but nobody, rocked sf like he did. and probably ever will again. and, from what i hear, he put a pretty good dent in nyc to boot. so, whenever i go past that corner, i think of that day in 96 when he was daylight bombing way before i ever thought of it, and i miss him. rest in peace.

Tie has influenced my bombing more than any other writer ever. I remember when i first heard of his death, that whole summer i would go out with a can of black and silver just because he was such an influence. Very few have ever bombed as hard as tie, and had such amazing style. You dont look at his throwees the way you normally look at somebodys throwups, you truly experience them. You can feel his emotion, and whats amazing is that he busted out so much emotion with two colors and did it in seconds. Bump, for a true king. TIE, RIP

what a tragic story.. fuck that dude who shot TIE
fuckin :five-o:
im no CSI FBI forensic detective or anything but in my opinion I don't think TIE was shot accidently..
I bet TIE paniced to get the gun away from his head then the pig faggot shot him..
N maybe TIE doesn't speak english too well and when he paniced he had trouble reasoning.. and he could of been out of breathe when he was climbing that shit too...
shit i dont know...
REST IN PEACE :king: TIE STILL INSPIRING!

Tie spoke English fine.
Obviously Tie was murdered. By a Vietnam Vet, trained to kill Asians, holed up and terrified in the Tenderloin. William Porter claims Tie grabbed the gun and it accidently went off... In the back of his head. Think about it, its impossible.
The DA didn't care. Tie was a vandal, William Porter was a 'good citizen'. Fuck the state.
