Victoria announces runaway train probe

A runaway train which slammed into a stationary train at Melbourne's Spencer Street Station had rolled downhill without power.

The Train operator confirmed the train had travelled more than 15 kilometres downhill from Broadmeadows, in the city's north, without its driver or any passengers.

Its ghost journey ended when it rammed a stationary V-Line train with 22 people aboard at the Spencer Street Station about 9.30pm (AEDT).

Eleven passengers on the V-Line train, bound for Bacchus Marsh west of Melbourne, were treated at the scene for minor injuries, with four people taken to hospital.

Two of the injured were discharged while the other two are expected to go home later today.

M>Train Managing Director Alan Chaplin said an internal investigation into the incident was underway and M>Train would co-operate fully with any other investigation.

He said the train had no power and had travelled on forward momentum.

"Unfortunately, trains can roll down hill and in this case we believe the train moved on its momentum ... it is a very steep gradient from Broadmeadows," Mr Chaplin told radio 3AW.

"There was no power on the train at the time."

Mr Chaplin said the systems operating the level crossings between the two stations appeared to operate normally.

A spokesman for Transport Minister Peter Batchelor said last night the circumstances surrounding the incident had sparked much speculation about the cause of the crash.

But it was too early to apportion blame fairly, he said.

The government has called for the Australian Transport Safety Board to investigation the accident.

Metropolitan Ambulance Service spokesman James Howe said the driver of the V-Line train, which was due to depart within minutes, saw the onrushing commuter train and jumped clear.

"He was very lucky because his compartment was fused with the other train," Mr Howe said.

He said ambulance staff feared the worst when they arrived because the impact had welded together the drivers' compartments.

But they were relieved to discover that of the passengers aboard the V-Line train, only four needed hospital treatment.

"With the Waterfall accident (in Sydney last Friday, which claimed eight lives) we were prepared for the worst," he told AAP.

"And looking at the impact, it was certainly an alarming scene.

"The V-Line train was about to depart within minutes and, if it was moving, then the injuries would have been significantly worse ... they were all very lucky."

A spokesman for V-Line said the company had started its own probe of the incident and would co-operate fully with any other investigation.

Try taking a screenshot, then go into adobe photoshop, or a similar program, open a new canvas and paste. Not 100% sure that will work the best, but i've done it before without too many hassles.

itll be blurry so sharpen the picture and it should be alright. not the best but itll do the job.
