yeah fully, there used to be some quality on that wall: ksa, tgc, emb, akm, tab. and that stuff would stay up for years, easily. these days even the best piece on there would struggle to stay up longer than 6 months.

this is a good point but the problem is you seem to be stereotyping these political graffiti writers in the same sentence as defending against the stereotype of your own activity.
Now don’t get me wrong I am in the same boat and do not appreciate hippies using their political beliefs as a platform to be lazy.
However I think you would be surprised as to who the people are doing the political graffiti, an act like the one that triggered this discussion involves a high degree of balls and organization, similar to the prerequisites of a successful (hip hop) graffiti writer, I doubt highly that this could be executed by some doped out, malnutritional hippy.

The best way to control this movement is to commercialize it, this is what is happening to graffiti as we speak, it is being pimped in advertising and graphic design by people such as 123klan (scien and klor) among others as a fad!
Graffiti IS a art form IF it is done in an illegal context, this gives it content and political comment, 2 ingredients that are the backbone of fine art.
As soon as graffiti is viewed outside of this context it is reduced simply to a form of decorative arts (ie a style) with no substance other than its visual appeal. This now exposes graffiti's potential weakness, when there is no "ideal" ,ie political comment and content, graffiti looses its strength within society and will ultimately die as soon as the "style" of hip hop graffiti is played out (it is on edge already).
Think about the genesis of Hip Hop graffiti, we all know it has a distinct look and certain key ingredients that allow us to identify it as "graffiti". The reason it looks the way it does is because it has evolved ILLEAGALY with obvious time constraints, it would have ended up looking very differently if people like Seen UA had the opportunity to go back a few days in a row in order to paint a train with attention to detail that is only possible on legal walls.
For this reason painting legal walls should be recognized as an imitation of graffiti NOT graffiti itself. To paint graffiti in a legal context is just plain ridiculous, similar to doing a throw up on a legal wall. Real graffiti IS illegal and IS generally unwanted, the aim of graffiti writers SHOULD NOT be to gain public acceptance through pretty murals, A graffiti writer may employ the skills learnt from painting illegally to produce a mural, but should recognize this as a mural not a act of graffiti.
If these points are recognized by writers concerned with the future of graffiti, we can maintain its underground status and not worry about the problem of “selling out” on ideals.
In conclusion do what you want to do but recognize what it is you are doing, do not attempt to mislead yourself or others in order to capitalize on the current appeal of graffiti, and if you are truly passionate about graffiti then paint illegally! </span>

For an artform that is so "free", any truthful writer would have to admit that it is extremely confined to a strict set of rules, formats, politics, and historical conformity. For example, the common use of key lines, outlines, bubbles, highlights, shadow/3D, very recycled letter forms, and similar output of all the above elements into an overall piece. There are some people doing "innovative graff", but on the whole you would have to admit that for a "free" artform it is very conformist.

over and out should go down the Frankston line cause there's lot's of stuff that has not been seen on the internet.Over the weekend there was a wall painted at Mentone Station(legal) with SIRM,MESK,TAIR,RESET,AKSIS and some other guy and there all pretty good,all colour co-ordinated.Also at Pato Bridge(Bentleigh-Patterson) and Highett Bridge(Moorabbin-Highett) there is new stuff from CI that was not in the update that MG did a couple of months a go as well as a few other peices that are worth a look.An other good spot would be a legal wall about 200 metres before Cheltnham station with pretty good RESET,SIRM,LUDE,TAIR,TAIR and i am sure you would see other stuff that you might want.

This is exactly it. Graffiti isn't about doing a certain amount of tracksides and a certain amount of tags and legeals. Graffiti is something you do for yourself. If you have fun sitting down doing a legal with your mates, then thats cool. If it makes you feel good to bomb the rntire city, then power to you. But it's all about what you want. As long you're doing what makes you happy, then who gives about what other people think. I can't stand people like bigjoe trying to push their veiwpoint onto everybody else. I found the following transcript at The Graffiti Writers
Local 132 Union Hall. At first, it`s size and format made me think
it was a religious tract. Upon closer inspection I realized it`s
purpose was to instruct on another level. I submit it to you without
any edits, so read carefully, you saps.

There are a few things you must do before in order to make
your presence a welcome one. First; know the history. Second; Know
the rules of the game. Third;Work hard at being good, or ar least
competent. Fourth;Snitches, and shit talkers get stitches and need
walkers. Fifth; You`re good, but you`re not that good. Keep your fat
head to a reasonable swell and get back to work. These are the five
fingers of your left hand. Study them well. Soon, you`ll be able to
get a grip on your self esteem and we`ll all be better for it.

FIRST: HISTORY
Cavemen did it, so did Romans and Egyptians. The Incas did
it, so did Greeks and Native Americans. There was graffiti on the
New York subway a year after it was built. There`s graffiti on the
moon. If graffiti is vandalism, and vandalism is graffiti, then man
has left his mark with garbage at the farthest reaches of the
universe. So you with your pathetic desire to be remembered are in
good company. I could spend a ream of paper telling you about the
development of modern graffiti, but we`ve got other ground to cover.
It`s important that you know it, so ask your local expert (or DJ
Deadly Budda in Pittsburg if you don`t have one) and he`ll tell you

SECOND: THE RULES
1 You suck until further notice
2 It`s gonna take a long time before we even acknowledge
your existence, even longer before we can bear to look at that foul
scribble you call your name. To speed the process of acceptance you
can (A) Choose a clever name that defies the norm of simpleminded
slang. An example of a good name is "ARGUE." It looks good when
written, sounds cool when spoken, and conveys a combative attitude.
On the other hand, "ENEMA" (actual name) looks, sounds, and conveys

general, other writers names and tombstones. Writing on memorial
walls and cars is death.

THIRD: DEVELOPING STYLE
Although being a toy seems undesirable, you should enjoy it
while you can. At this stage you can bite all you want with no
remorse. All your elders will say is "Aw isn`t that sweet, kootchie
kootchie koo." So steal that dope connection, rob that color scheme,
and loot whole letter forms. Don`t worry about giving any credit,
weÕll pat ourselves on the back and brag how weÕre influencing the

Once you got it down to a science you can reinvent letterforms to

There`s nothing wrong with knowing youÕre the shit as long
