View Full Version : how long until the masses accept graffiti?
it seems that lately since the 'elements', whether you agree with that or not, have been thrown around in pop culture, graffiti has been more emergent in pop videos rather than just hip-hop videos. clothing has graffiti on it, or designs by ex-graf artists. since basquiat and others hit the mainstream art world, there's been a growing appreciation of it, but how long do you think it will take before people (in america) embrace it? we've already seen places like amsterdam, copenhagen, parts of paris, etc. not really care anymore.
kind of the same deal with marijuana. what's your take?

I'm checking my clock and it still seems that hell won't be freezing over for at least another 376,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years, give or take a few billion centuries.

It seems that corporate America has to some extent accepted Graffiti to sell their crap to the drones and easily sold masses. But when you get to brass tacks and the nitty gritty of painting, no I don't see a widespread acceptance of Graffiti at least in this century. Most civilians accept the prods and beautiful pieces that TATS Crew and FX, UW do for example. I'm just speaking for where I am. When it cums to tags, fillins, ect they can't stand that and will probably never accept it. And I say now as I've always said the pieces/prods & tags and fillins are the right and left eyes of this thing of ours. I always run into the pieces and prod fans everywhere. And almost 8 times outta ten when I ask someone do they like tags an fillins they say hell no that stuff's an eyesore blah blah blah and soforth. But their quick to add but I like the colorful nice stuff even though I can't read it most of the time.
As for weed. I don't smoke for health reasons but if this Government would just wake the fuck up and realize that legalization would just be best for all involved I think we would all be better off. And the tax revenue they could collect from it would probably wipe out the National Dept in about a month or so.

all they need do is creat more legals , like under bridges that no one goes under anyhow , and that will stop a good portion of illegal vandalism in that area . please believe it .

graffiti by it's very nature is illegal - that will never change.
The public may get used to 'graffiti art' because Murals are nothing new.
and we all know that if you put 2 walls together and say
"ok guys.. this wall is legal, so dont paint on the other one ok?"
that both walls will be covered in no time.
Plus it will be a hell of a lot more stressful getting space on the legal wall.

One of the things I would do if I won the lottery would be to open a few graffitii parks dedicated to pieceing and whatever.

I agree, itīs the money that governs us all, unfortunately..
eh, the reason i brought it up is...i was thinking...cities should have departments that declare certain walls, bridges, etc legal, and commission them. for $, unfortunately.

any writers out there who want graff to become accepted by the public need to do something important:
go to your favorite train yard, lay down on the tracks and become a new pic on rotten.com.
if graff was accepted, it would be pointless.

hopefully never making graff legal will ruin everything.....enless toys enless beef with endless going over whats the point
yeah...i understand all that. i just think it would be cool if there was like one city that was a mecca for it, you know. where it was all legal everywhere. it'd become a tourist attraction and shit.

I actually hope graffiti never goes legal because they're would be so many masses or retards, toys and just ignorant morons doing all kinds of bullshit, but when its illegal only a few of them are dumb enough to do it.
If it was legal then it really wouldn't be graffiti now would it? Fuck acceptance. It (graffiti) isn't meant to be accepted. If you want some legal shit to paint on buy some canvas or plywood and make a fucking wall. Yeah. Fuck you and fuck me too.
Don't get me wrong.... Legals are fine.. but they aren't really part of graffiti. You know it's true.

ahh that is so true
hm, maybe legals aren't what i was talking about in the first place. i was thinking more along the lines of how long will it take for more than a few people to walk down the street, see some graffiti, and see it as a good thing.

I have to admit the adenaline rush from bombing is cool. I agree that total legaization is stupid. But there should be more places where people can go and rock shit. In addition to bombin. Which will always be illegal.

Why would you wonder when the world is going to completely accept graffiti? The media has an appreciation for the ones with a great amount of talent, and even try to make money of them, but hey everyone's gotta get their dough one way or another. But most of us aren't making money off graffiti and vice versa. For me, the saddest thing would be for people to stop noticing and start accepting graffiti like it was a regular street sign. If you're not out there to get at least one person's attention, what's the point...

most kids today that i know either have no opinion or like it...
so i think that the apathetic group of people today would hate it when they grow older
it would take a long time for the young generation of kids that like it would be the majority and lead to a aceptance

graffiti is illegal and to most its vandalism. therefore it will never be accepted. i had a thought once that graffiti would some day be accepteded because its still new to the world. its only like 30 years old maybe a little more i duno when it started. but there are still people alive that remeber life without graffiti thats why to them such an act is a horrid one. but as the years go by these people are dieing away and the new generation of cattle is growing up with graffiti where to them and some its comforting a way of life or just a visual that has always been there. to kids that live in the city i bet they could never even begin to think whut the world would like without it. and even after all this people will still grow and learn and there property will get writen on. therefore they will begin to hate what they once didnt care about or whuetever they felt. thats why it will never be accepted. understood maybe but accepted no. i think thats whut i wanted to say:D

I'm Sure That Graffiti won't go mainstream because people still think that it;s just a bunch of punk kids breaking things. Jet Set Radio isnt helping any I actually met a kid that thought buners and peices could be done in a matter of seconeds that really pissed me off. Well I would't Expect Graffiti to be accecped by anyone but the stupid teenbop kids who just think its a cool fad. Well FUCK THEM!! Graffiti is Life.

graffiti is in music videos and commercials because certain(most) companies choose to market their goods as "youth oriented" or "counter culture" because kids have the largest disposable income. furthermore to market to rich white suburban kids they market useing parts of innercity life , graffiti for example. it is by no means accepted it just sells products.
damn that sounds like an essay

i totally agree with you!, in my town, a little south of the atl, there are 3 bridges that no one goes under, they city says it leads more illegal graff. but how i see it is, is that because we cant paint these spots, we have to find more spots that happen to be illegal, damn morons
