i use transparency sheets. theyre pretty durable and u can tape them together for making bigger stencils.

my question is, whats the best way to carry them around? i mean after i spray mine, i end up putting them in a binder with dividers but they just end up getting stuck to the dividers and theyre a bitch to peel off.

try buying a pack of manilla folders.you can usually get like 100 for 14 or so bucks.use some for stencils, and the others to carry stencils.

You could just make the entire thing a two layer.

Or just cut lines in the border of the islands, so when looking afar you still see a fairly full stencil. It's hard to explain, stencil rev would be better as an example of it.

it is not congruent with the HOWTO theme of the yard, and serves only as a picture post, everyone knows how to cut and glue things already.

posts in this thread are often shots in the dark and already answered before.

A few things come to mind lol. First is the fact you and plenty others will start bitching once people start making stencil threads asking questions.
Second, just because someone posted a picture doesn't mean the thread is no longer used to help people.
And you can't even use the last page or two as an example. In the other stickies people use those like fuckin chat threads...

If you wanna talk about something that should be done, it's combining the ink/marker threads. Hell as of yesterday people are even posting recipes in the marker thread. You could also join the Spray Paint and Caps thread. I like em either way, but what's the point when they go hand-in-hand, and in both threads you have people saying "take it to the other thread" lol.

Granted stencils are usually weak sauce, but it's still part of this artform, whether you like it or not. In certain situations stencils can say alot more than graff could, like the dude with the pics has proven...

instead of just fighting to keep this thread alive... i'm actually gonna post something usefull...

people don't realize that cheating is okay with stencils, that's what they pretty much are, is a hack for tagging. when a small connecting bar is ripped, just throw some tape on there. cut it to the right shape and slap it where you need to. the tape is actually stronger than the paper, so it helps reinforce thin areas. also, when you're totally done cutting out a stencil, put a spray on clear coat on it. i did this to one of my stencils, let it dry, left it out in the rain, and used it the next day...

hope someone uses this info

ExcuseMySarcasm
06-13-2009, 03:52 PM
Good shit, man. Yeah, quite often I snap, cut, or rip off an important bit of a stencil. I just apply some handy clear tape and recut it to how I want it.

FuckDaFakes

I love stencils... they are so bloody handy when you dont necessarly have time or space for a throwie :)

06-24-2009, 11:02 PM
yeah i get a really big island going and i cut the only part holding it lol
that really pisses me off. but when i tape it it distorts my stencil, like if the strip is too small.
but this is really handy for larger stencils

one thing i do to avoid underspray on a stencil im doing for a stencil that i can lay flat is to put small rocks on it or even used 9mm bullets :D

ɞℓiɴĸ
06-25-2009, 03:18 AM
Uh, I guess, if you're stenciling on horizontal surfaces.... I prefer vertical myself. To avoid underspray, use spray glue. If you've got the time to do it, put another piece of paper over it or a book and apply pressure to make sure all the little sharp ends are actually stuck to the wall. Way faster than touching each piece of the stencil with your fingers.

06-26-2009, 01:00 AM
ive been having problems with my stencils when i pull the exacto knife out of the stencil paper to start on a new line, it cuts furthur into my stencil.
if anyone has this problem, pull the opposite direction you are cutting.
if you cut right, pull out to the left

first 3 people to reply will be the 3 other judges post email and post pic of the stencil to so others can help make a decision

I found that plastic placemats from walmart work really well for stencil work. They cut fairly easily and are durable as hell, not to mention they are usually super cheap. Also, if you accidentally cut something, you can superglue that bitch back in place without distortion (as compared to using tape).

Yo Tmoney, stenciling doesn't exactly = toys it just means your using a premade piece to get up.. That doesent mean you didn't put as much effort into what you did, its just a faster way to get up.. Stencil one of your characters instead of freehand... It will save you time + paint and = quickness.. But when it comes down to bombing.. You can't stencil it really.. And that's what seperates the men from the mice..

Not sure if anyone's posted about this but I figured I'd give it a shot to all you stencil heads out there.

I work with cardboard a lot and have for a few years....

Some tips on cutting....use a box cutter....yes xactos are comfortable but get used to a box cutter and you'll save yourself some money in the long run. Blades are way more sturdy and youll get more life out of one blade by flipping it over when one side is dull or the tip is broken.
http://content.glidesociety.com/image.aspx?id=7ed8a313-b1e2-4384-87a7-2a36a9a23436
I suggest looking for a stanley box cutting knife. They sell them at walmart. They fit into the palm of your hand and have a retractable shaft that holds the blade. Super comfortable and the blade doesn't wiggle as much as standard box cutters.

If you have super detailed stencils...go to michaels and look for circle die cutters. No not the scrapbooking ones. These are for fabrics/leather.

http://content.glidesociety.com/image.aspx?id=e454b53e-41ed-4ae4-bc5c-a9d3877d2e81
http://content.glidesociety.com/image.aspx?id=6584ccc7-1bbc-4078-b84e-a0e3c82f3b12
They may or may not come with a hammer...but you will need one. They come in different sizes. They are basically a round metal "pipe" that is very short and sharpened on one end. To cut cardboard just position it on the area you need cut and bang the hell out of the edges.

http://content.glidesociety.com/image.aspx?id=1b120f7e-9a5a-4323-9fcd-db2f3319caa0
I haven't used this but came across it on the website. Looks pretty useful.

Like I said, this is only for cardboard. Flutes are the wiggly parts inside the liners. The fluting of cardboard is various but there are only about 4 or 6 different types of fluting styles. Then you get into the double fluting for heavy duty boxes. I suggest using the single fluting ...smallest and tightest fluting you can find. The cardboard is denser and will be easier to cut.

iorts3
02-12-2010, 02:51 PM
Wow sec, those look like some heavy duty tools.. ive used box cutters on harder-core material and those things can hack through almost anything.. those place mats are cool but there a real pain in the ass to cut wit a box cutter and a lil too hard to cut wit xacto (unless you got one of those fat blades) i would like to use a hammer and that fatty lil grey thing but it looks like a real time consumer.. plus i usually use throw aways so im only gettin 2 or 3 uses out of my shit.. ive jus been so used to an xacto and manillas folders..

Lady_Sec
02-12-2010, 03:16 PM
Yeah, like I said...it's for cardboard. It's actually not time consuming at all. Plus you get clean corners and rounded edges. One pound of a hammer instead of going back and cleaning up the jagged edges in your design. Just my two cents..

Yeah I'd like to try that fatty grey thing...

iorts3
02-15-2010, 10:23 PM

bump this info.

To make my stencil I photocopy/print out onto white a4 and then laminate the paper at work. Cut out the stencil then and it is nice & easy using a craft blade and presto a ready to go, handy sized stencil.

thats a sick method bro, im assuming the cuts come out clean right?

Gleneagles Hotel, owned by drinks giant Diageo, made an operating loss of ?554,000 in the year to 30 June 2009. RMT (http://www.rmtvip.jp)The five-star Perthshire hotel, which was the venue for the G8 summit in 2005, is set to host the Ryder Cup golf tournament in 2014. The loss is thought to stem from a drop in the number of business customers holding corporate events. The figures follow a slump in recent years in operating profits for the hotel, near Auchterarder, which stood at ?5.5m in 2003-4 but fell to ?1m in 2007-8. arad RMT (http://www.rmt-wm.com)Peter Lederer, the hotel's chairman and highest-paid director, saw his pay package drop from ?287,000 in 2008 to ?209,000 last year after his bonus was cut because the company failed to meet its financial targets.arad RMT (http://www.rmt-wm.com )

Usually, I just use a wood burner with a nice and sharpened tip to cut through plastic shit. U can find them for pretty cheap depending on where you get it. Don't have to turn the paper every cut, just like your tracing the outlines. Makes shit dope easy, especially if you plan on making a big stencil. I'll post a picture of mine as soon as I find it...

im know there are hundreds of threads with this info and i apologize but i need some help.
i'm trying to make a fairly detailed stencil to go on a t-shirt.

do people usually use an x-acto knife

If you are thinking of using a stencil on a t-shirt. I'd recommend using acrylic paint, Eventually it'll start to wash off, It gets a cool worn out look. I use an x-acto knife, invest on some different blades though, they're really helpfull. They're about $1.35 at Walmart.

I have never stenciled and am not really interested in trying it, but must admit that is a pretty sick one . The chick tagging your name is a dope idea. You might want to work on your hand style though. No offense, but after such a tight neat stencil, with 3 colors and a sick concept the tag only drags it down..71 Get that poppin and your golden.

alright. i am working on a super detailed 6 layer measuring 6"x 8" so i am trying to find something super small but sharp as hell. its a bitch to cut through both sides of the lamanetes.

on a side note, has anyone tried the scotch precision cutter?

Pew_Pew_Pew

Looks like a ceramic tip on that scotch precision cutter. Rack one and find out?

Bill Nye
09-13-2010, 08:20 PM
i copped one. it is ceramic. glides through news print- photo paper with ease. needs gone over at least twice on anything thicker (folders and such.) laminates take at least 3 cuts, and dull out the blade super fast. they handle like xactos with the sharpness of a box knife. the blade is very, very small though.
not bad for bigger stencils on thinner sheets, but a big no to laminates.

I began painting by just doing some basic stencils, and worked my way up to slightly more advanced stencils before I stopped using them altogether.

To me, they're just too much of a hassle to carry around since they need to be flat and any folds or creases basically destroy the end result. I guess if I used a more rigid material for the stencil then it would defeat my problem, but I'd rather freehand a painting than just use a 'cookie-cutter'.

I'm thinking about making up a couple new stencils though to use as a signature type of thing for my pieces... I think it'd be a good way of making your mark on pieces since it's much easier to remember an object than a name.

Do any of you make your own stencils from stock photos? What technique do you use? Personally, I just pull it up in Photoshop and mess around in there with the different layers and whatnot. but I have buddies who just print out the picture and then draw the shapes that they want to stencil, and then cut it out but I find it much easier to let the computer do it for me :D

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned this yet (atleast in the first and last 5 pages of the thread that I checked)

If you guys are looking to make your PAPER stencils stronger. Go out and buy a can of 2-component clear coat spray. This stuff is awesome and it will GREATLY increase the lifespan of your stencils.

One thing thing to note is not to apply too much at once, I'm sure most of you are aware that once your stencil becomes wet, it likes to bend and curl up on itself sometimes. The best way to avoid this while clear coating is by doing a LIGHT initial spray around just the outsides or the top/bottom of your stencil and leave it to cure. After about 20 mins you should be set up enough that your paper will now hold it's own shape and you can coat the rest, I suggest leaving them for a couple of hours in a dry environment out of the sun (i've found the sun tends to make the clearcoat seal shitty when using it on other applications)

Once you've let it dry, you're good to go, start bombing! Hope this was helpful..

What do you guys think is the best way to create inverted images out of regular photos to make stencils with?

Doesn't rolling up your stencils also make them hard to stay flat again?
