Whether you call him Razo or Rees, Sarah or Haras, one thing is clear: the kid has some cleaning up to do.

The kid, in this case, is the Richmond District's most notorious graffiti tagger -- generally known as Razo -- who recently pleaded guilty to more than 20 vandalism counts, some felonies and some misdemeanors, for treating the private and public properties of Geary Boulevard as his personal canvas.

"This guy over the years has done a lot of damage to Geary," said John Gray, a sheriff's deputy who in his spare time volunteers to clean up graffiti. "One night he would do the north side and the next night he would do the south side. He would go from Masonic to 30th Avenue and indiscriminately tag everything."

Razo -- whose real name has not been released because he was a juvenile at the time he was charged -- paid more than $8,500 in victims restitution, lost his driving license for one year, and was sentenced to 300 hours of community service, which will be served this summer, according to San Francisco police Officer Christopher Putz, who oversaw the vandalism case.

"We'll take him right back to Geary Boulevard and he can start maintaining all the places he used to damage," said Putz. "He can walk from 30th to Arguello and the next day he can do it again, and the next day he'll do it again so he'll get a real feeling of what it is like to paint the same thing over and over and over."

Razo, an upper-middle class Outer Richmond resident who is currently on vacation in France where his father lives, was the most persistent of graffiti artists. He tagged the underside of the Golden Gate Bridge. He tagged second-story billboards, commercial trucks, elementary schools, city buses.

Both interior and exterior of the old Letterman Hospital at 15th Avenue and Lake Street are covered with his various tags.

"He would do some pretty brazen stuff," said Gray.

Razo was arrested in November when police, armed with a search warrant, arrived at his house. The suspect knew the police were coming and stashed the evidence in a locked boxed underneath the stairs in the garage.

"He was a bit cocky with us until he saw that we were going to the garage, and then he said he wanted to talk," said Putz.

Evidence leading to the arrest was largely compiled by the Geary Boulevard Merchants Association, which took hundreds of photographs of Razo's handiwork.

Since Razo was busted, Geary Boulevard has had fewer graffiti incidents, according to David Heller, president of the association. "They know this is not a neighborhood to mess with," he said.

Razo is scheduled to return from Paris next week. He will immediately be handed a paint bucket and roller.

"If he wants to continue painting and drawing, he'll have to do it in a legal spot -- hopefully on a canvas," said Putz.
