The City is preparing to send out dozens of letters demanding that private property owners clean up graffiti on their buildings within 30 days or face $500 fines. The letters come as a result of a new law written by District 7 Supervisor Sean Elsbernd and passed by the full board on Oct. 28.

The new legislation comes as graffiti is on the rise, according to Mohammed Nuru, the deputy director of Public Works.

Nuru said the department averages between 600 and 1,000 graffiti complaints a month -- a 50 percent increase over past years. He said Public Works' $2 million graffiti-eradication budget would have to be increased to $10 million to properly deal with the problem.

"At the moment, graffiti in The City is out of control. It's alarming," said Nuru. "We really need to clamp down. It is making San Francisco look terrible."

The crackdown can't come fast enough for Ronald Tunison, who owns a condo at 88 King St., across from SBC Park. When Tunison shelled out $850,000 for his tenth-floor apartment two years ago, the one thing he wanted, he said, was a "million dollar view."

He got his wish: From South of Market to downtown to the Bay Bridge, the view from his living room is stunning.

But he also sees something he did not pay for and something he doesn't want to look at -- a 25-foot-tall piece of graffiti stretching 100 feet across a storage building at 611 Second Street. The graffiti, which appeared in April while Tunison was on a business trip, says "More Book$."

For six months, Tunison has been hounding city officials, as well as the landlord, trying to get rid of "More Book$."

"I would say it's a very good public nuisance," he said. "I'm at a dead end. The only thing I can do at this point is hire an attorney."

He said he misses the old faded signage on the building, which said South End Warehouse.

"It was a beautiful piece of history, a little bit of nostalgia," he said.

Police officer Chris Putz, who handles graffiti for the department, said he hopes the new law will address Tunison's concerns.

"(Tunison) has a legitimate complaint," said Putz. "I would be furious if I had to look at that."

of all the muni metros and busses i hit.. they have never pulled them out of service.. even during the world series.. forget yards.. they pull them.. the best way is to put shit on the tracks and jump out and do quick fill ins or tags out by the beach or stonestown
there are a few other good spots if you study the line.. like when they stop before going through the old eureka station at night..

And his buddy is Public Defender who's gotten alot of guys off the hook, they are old sf family and probably remember when graff went along with OPEN spaces, now that every inch of the city has been bought and sold we got no room anyone that doesn't support private property. Majority of kids are ignorant to the history of public space. If you can touch it, it should be yours.

He got his wish: From South of Market to downtown to the Bay Bridge, the view from his living room is stunning.

But he also sees something he did not pay for and something he doesn't want to look at -- a 25-foot-tall piece of graffiti stretching 100 feet across a storage building at 611 Second Street. The graffiti, which appeared in April while Tunison was on a business trip, says "More Book$."

For six months, Tunison has been hounding city officials, as well as the landlord, trying to get rid of "More Book$."

"I would say it's a very good public nuisance," he said. "I'm at a dead end. The only thing I can do at this point is hire an attorney."

He said he misses the old faded signage on the building, which said South End Warehouse.

its 65' wide and 26' tall, much larger than a freight or freeway wall. and it would never have happened if i stuck to illegals..
