it sucks going with other people when you write cause when cops show up, they always bitch out. when your by yourself, you can dig out and them slow fuck will never get you, but when your with friends, you cant ditch them. not because you dont want to leave them behind, but because if you dig out, those babies will rat you out to save their own ass.

it's so funny there was like 5 different cops who showed up because i guess they couldn't handle us two. even their chief(?) came. he was all if they're gonna be assholes, take them in for anything. we can do anything they want cause we da police.

A mainland vandalism trend has reached Hawaii with more than a dozen businesses in Waikiki and Honolulu being "tagged" by graffiti artists who use hydrofluoric acid to burn their mark into plate-glass windows.

The damage left behind by "acid graffiti" is expensive to fix and sometimes involves replacing the damaged glass entirely, said one expert. Triton Restoration owner Maurice Crabbe said he has had about 18 repair jobs involving acid graffiti since April.

"I've done maybe eight stores at the Hilton," Crabbe said, "four at the Sheraton, two at the Hyatt and some others around town.

"I know it's hydrofluoric acid because its pretty popular on the East Coast where I've done some work."

Some of the acid-etched tags left behind include "ACE," "ACE MVP," and either "OZ" or "DZ," said Crabbe.

Honolulu police have been informed about the acid graffiti, and Crabbe said he might have talked to a possible suspect.

"I was getting my equipment ready to grind down the glass when this kid came up to me and started asking some specific questions about how I was going to take the graffiti off," he said. "Then he started questioning me why I was doing it and said, 'Hey, at least I'm giving you work to do.' And then he took off.

"I had $3,000 worth of equipment in my hands, so I wasn't about to leave it there to chase him. ... I'm working with police now, though."

Security officials for the Retail Merchants of Hawaii said they are concerned because the hydrofluoric acid being used is potentially dangerous. They said they are taking this more seriously than if it was just the traditional paint tagging.

"This acid etching costs much more to fix, and it's bad news if you get it on you," said Tim Haverly, chairman of security management for the Retail Merchants of Hawaii. "We've battled graffiti of the normal type for a long, long time ... but this is something entirely different."

Hydrofluoric acid is known to be one of the strongest inorganic acids and is used mainly for industrial purposes such as glass etching, metal cleaning and electronics manufacturing. Some cities that have experienced acid graffiti include New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

"It's the latest trend," Crabbe said. "The acid comes in a can and looks like foam, but you need a license to buy it, so I don't know how they're getting it."

to handle graffiti reports

Question: Is there a number we can call for a group that goes around town removing graffiti?

Answer: There is no one group we know of that goes around removing graffiti, but there are two hot lines you can call to report the defacement of property:

The Honolulu Police Department's graffiti hot line is 529-3222 and the City and County of Honolulu's is 527-5180.

Call the HPD number to report graffiti on either public or private property.

Staff in HPD's Informational Resources Section retrieves messages Monday-Friday and a report is made and sent to the patrol district where the graffiti is located, according to HPD Detective Letha DeCaires, coordinator of the CrimeStoppers Program.

Patrol officers check the scene, write out a police report about the degree of criminal property damage involved, then notify the proper authorities for action, she said.

For example, if it's a defaced freeway sign, the state Department of Transportation would be notified; on public school property, the Department of Education; on a private business property, the owner.

"Private owners are encouraged to remove the graffiti quickly," DeCaires said.

In the past, she noted that HPD officers have partnered with the community to "clean" graffiti. "This has also been done through service organizations, such as Boy Scouts," she said.

Meanwhile, DeCaires said that information on graffiti is shared within the department at a monthly meeting of the eight patrol districts, which helps HPD determine trends and other related criminal activity.

She also noted that attacking graffiti is No. 4 on the police chief's "wish list" of priorities.

Meanwhile, the City and County of Honolulu's 24-hour graffiti hot line is checked by the staff of the Department of Facility Maintenance's Road Maintenance Division.

Calls received on the hot line are transposed onto "Service Requests" and given to a department investigator, according to Tyler Sugihara, acting chief of the Road Maintenance Division.

The investigator reviews the requests and faxes them to HPD for investigation of possible gang involvement.

The city would not get involved if the graffiti is on private property. If a contact number is provided, the complainant would be notified that the private property owner is responsible for the cleanup, Sugihara said.

If the graffiti involves a utility company within a city roadway or if it involves state property, the request would be referred to the appropriate company or state agency, he said.

If the graffiti involves city property, the request would be referred to the appropriate city agency.

The Division of Road Maintenance's Halawa Corporation Yard has a crew that specifically responds to graffiti cleanup for city roads, traffic signs, walls, bridges, and flood control facilities, Sugihara said.

The Department of Transportation Services also has a crew that cleans graffiti from city bus stops and bus shelters

I know things get hectic over there at the City Council. And I know you are out in the community all the time doing good deeds, raising money for charity and stuff like that. I know it's easy to lose track of who the good guys and bad guys are.

Take this graffiti thing. Yes, graffiti's a blight and something should be done about it. But you forgot whose side your votes are buttered on. You represent the good guys, the property owners, the taxpayers, the voters and the guys without rap sheets. You are against the bad guys, the graffiti sprayers, the gangstas, the criminals and the punks.

So why in the world would you dredge up an old idea that would penalize the good guys for something the bad guys do?

I know, you've retracted your bill to make property owners pay to have graffiti removed from their property. But since this was the second time the nutty idea came up, we need to address why it was considered in the first place.

Back when your colleague, John Henry Felix, was kicking around the "penalize-the-victims" graffiti idea, I pointed out how stupid it was. Forcing people to pay to have graffiti removed from their property is like forcing a gunshot victim to pay to have his blood removed from the sidewalk. Or having someone struck by a hit-and-run driver pay for picking up all the broken glass left on the highway after his head hit the windshield.

Yes, none of us like to see blood on the sidewalk. It reminds us that society isn't perfect. But you don't SOLVE the problem by simply erasing evidence of the crime. And you certainly don't put the responsibility of getting rid of the evidence on the head of the victim.

Even considering forcing property owners to remove graffiti is an admission that authorities are more interested in covering up evidence than stopping the crime.

This mindset is rampant. The usual knee-jerk reaction to any serious problem is to take away the rights of the people who haven't done anything wrong in the first place.

For instance, guns are often used in crimes. The easy and misguided answer is to ban ALL guns. But this is stupid because most gun owners are law-abiding citizens. They are the good guys. They aren't the problem.

The problem is getting guns out of the hands of criminals. Simply because this is difficult doesn't mean you solve it by taking away everyone's rights.

If you must violate someone's rights, I say violate the rights of the criminals first.

If I own a piece of property that happens to to be on the edge of some perceived gang turf, I become the victim of graffiti. The problem is with the gangs and graffiti vandals, not with me.

Do you see, Rene? The property owner is the good guy, the graffiti sprayer is the bad guy.

Now, what can we do to stop the graffiti vandals? We could shoot them on sight. That would certainly stop the problem. We could give them free tickets to Disneyland. That would stop the problem until they returned home. And both ideas would cause a public outcry.

But that is roughly the parameters you have to work with, Rene. Somewhere between shooting graffiti vandals on sight and sending them to Disneyland is the answer to the graffiti problem. Your job is to find a solution that works. That's why you get the small bucks.

And when you come up with a solution, use this little test to tell you if you are on the right track: Does the solution help the good guys and punish the bad guys? It's that simple. If you had applied the test to the recent graffiti bill, it never would have come back to life. Let's just hope a wooden stake has finally been pounded through its heart.

A sophisticated form of graffiti called "tagging" is spreading at an alarming rate and costing businesses and taxpayers thousands of dollars a week in cleanup costs, said Councilman Andy Mirikitani.

"The difference between vandalism and art is permission," said Mirikitani, who met with representatives from the police, court system and business community to address the issue.

"Seven billion dollars a year is being spent across the United States to remove graffiti, and if we don't take a stand now, we're going to have the same problems as New York and other cities."

Tagging involves a competition between painters, who refer to themselves as artists, said police Detective Glen Muramoto.

"The higher up you go, the more respect you get from peers," he said. "It's part of the hip-hop culture."

Hip-hop refers to the culture of rap music.

The typical "How did they do that?" reaction to tagging plays to the "You don't see us but we are here" hip-hop theme.

Noting a shift in tagging activity from Pearl City and Aiea to the urban center of Ala Moana, McCully and Moiliili, Mirikitani said the problem is out of control.

In a 10-block area heading mauka from the Hawai'i Convention Center, he said his staff counted 240 cases of graffiti vandalism.

"It's an insult to the community," Mirikitani said. "Businesses and taxpayers are spending over $1,000 a week to remove graffiti.

"We need a zero-tolerance approach, and without tougher sentences, starting with first-time offenders, there's no incentive to stop."

Since Jan. 1, the East Honolulu Crime Reduction Unit has made 12 arrests and linked the suspects to more than 50 cases, said Muramoto, who credits officers Chris Kobayashi and Mike Fisher for the busts.

Taggers work in teams, Muramoto said. "One guy says they can do something mural-size in 45 to 90 minutes," he said. "Two guys are working on it and one guy is a lookout."

The suspects arrested in January were age 16 to 22. All were charged with either felony, misdemeanor or petty misdemeanor criminal property damage.

Isaac Choy, whose Old Manoa Finance Building was tagged over the New Year's weekend, favors tougher penalties.

"If the police would be kind enough to bring the kids they arrested for my building to me, I'd punch them out," Choy said.

"Kids are uncontrollable so I don't know if you can hold the parents totally responsible, but I think they and their kid should be made to paint over the graffiti damage."

Mirikitani agrees. "Juveniles arrested repeatedly are being slapped on the wrist or getting light first penalties and end up back on the streets. Some who are sentenced to paint over graffiti never show up to do it," he said.

"At the very minimum, they should be required to remove the graffiti immediately, and they or their parents should pay restitution. . . ."

DRIVING around, you expect to look around and see scenery, but when I was driving down Kaukunahoa Road from Wahiawa to Waialua I was shocked to see graffiti.

Vandals may think graffiti's cool, but others, like me, think it's ugly and irritating.

I think graffiti shows how insecure the vandals are. They feel they need to do this so their peers think they're "cool" and "hard core." This gets them the attention they lack in other areas of their lives.

If the vandals were truly hard core they would put their names and addresses up on a wall because they wouldn't be afraid of the consequences.

The only thing graffiti really does is impose on the public. Innocent people end up doing the clean-up work, which isn't fair.

Vandals who are caught should have to paint over all the graffiti in the area. If not, they, not their parents, should pay for all of it to be painted. Then they should have to make a public apology for defacing the community.

Hopefully, all this will make them stop. If not, they need more punishment, such as attending counseling sessions, paying a fine and doing community service.

Many of the vandals are good artists. Since it is hard to catch vandals, the city should create a place where anyone can write, draw or paint, as long as the art does not contain profanity, slurs or gang-related messages.

People should be able to express themselves in a productive way. Hopefully, this would open a creative door for some and keep them off the streets and in school where they should be.

With an approved outlet, these artists could be proud of their work and get the respect they may deserve.

For the second time in nine days, someone painted graffiti on two large, culturally significant stones in front of the Hilo Public Library.

Library staff discovered the vandalism when they reported to work yesterday morning. Police say the incident occurred sometime between 7:15 p.m. Wednesday and 6:15 a.m. yesterday.

As they had on Nov. 11, the vandal or vandals painted the dates "1893-2004" in white on the 3 1/2-ton Naha Stone. The Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown in 1893, but the reference to the two years is unclear.

In yesterday's incident, both the Naha and the companion Pinao Stone were also defaced with a number of Hawaiian words.

A torn U.S. flag and an animal jawbone were left on top of the Naha Stone. The Hawaiian words "mai" (come) and "aihue" (take) were spray-painted on the flag.

The Hawaiian words scrawled on the stones were difficult to read, and there was some disagreement on what they were.

What appeared to be the phrase "He Noa Keakua" was painted on the large Naha Stone.

"That's what it says," said Kalani Kay. "It means 'In God We Trust.'"

Kay was one of a half-dozen members of the Order of Kamehameha I, a Hawaiian cultural preservation group, who cleaned the stones with wire brushes and a power washer yesterday.

The words "heinoa," "keakua," "pau," "mau" and "mahiki" were written on the smaller Pinao Stone, which is thought to have been an entrance stone of the ancient Pinao Temple, which once stood near the site of today's library.

"The words are wrong -- like the person doesn't really know how to write Hawaiian," said Kay. "It's kind of a pidgin, and I can't be sure what it means."

Police said they have enlisted the assistance of an authority on native Hawaiian culture and language to learn more about the significance of the phrases painted on the stones. For now the message remains a mystery.

"I've had several different people tell me what was written, and everyone said something different," said Kalena Silva, professor of Hawaiian studies at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. "I couldn't begin to guess about what it means."

The graffiti had already been removed before Silva had the chance to view the stones. He did, however, lament the "awful desecration of our sacred stones" while lauding that the sacred relics were directly accessible to the community.

"Most objects this artistically and culturally important are in museums," he said. "I don't understand why anyone would do this. Until now people have always respected them."

A new war in the streets of Pearl City
TWO years ago, Pearl City resident Tom Sugita faxed me a four-page tirade on the scourge of his community: graffiti. It seemed that every time gang members whipped out their spray cans to uglify walls, buildings and public structures, conscientious folks like Sugita would paint it over. Yet the newly purged surfaces would be defaced again just a few days later.
Pearl City, the epitome of mainstream Oahu, was beginning to look more like scuzzy L.A.

Sugita was hu-hu about the misdeeds of the vandals. But he was even more miffed about the indifference of his neighbors.

"You would be amazed at how many excuses people have for not being available to help us eradicate graffiti during scheduled paint-outs," he wrote. "They are too busy, too tired, whatever. Yet when it happens to their property, they are the ones to scream the loudest."

At the end of his correspondence, which seemed more of a cathartic exercise than a genuine inquiry, Sugita asked if I thought Pearl City's war against graffiti would succeed.

Since this is one wahine who believes in miracles, he got a yes. "Don't despair," was my response. "Your army of painters will grow because homeowners DO want to protect their property values and enhance their public safety. They know that, by leaving the graffiti untouched, it sends the very clear message that they have given up.

"Remember, there are lots more good guys than spray painters in Pearl City. It's just a matter of outlasting them."

And whattaya know, I was right! Just last week, the postman delivered another long letter from Tom Sugita. It started off by acknowledging that Pearl City had, indeed, triumphed in its crusade.

"Thanks to the Graffiti Task Force, formed a year ago, we have pretty much controlled graffiti in Palisades, and from Pearl City to Aiea," Sugita wrote. "Dedicated volunteers have adopted specific areas - members of the local Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis clubs, and citizen volunteers."

Sugita's pride and satisfaction was evident in his missive. What great news to start off 1998, I thought. Oops, spoke too soon.

His letter went on to describe an even more perplexing and potentially deadly problem plaguing the streets of Pearl City: speeding. Despite the standard residential speed limit of 25 mph, vehicles are careening over the asphalt at 30, 40, 50 miles an hour.

"They seem to have a 'freeway' mentality when they drive within Pearl City, and must drive at 'raceway' mentality when on the freeways," Sugita wrote. "During a five-week speed monitoring survey we found, to our surprise, that the most blatant offenders are not teen drivers but women! It seems that they are rushing in and out of our community because of their multiple roles as working mom, housewife, chauffeur, etc., and time is short."

OH boy, Tom Sugita. This is going to be a real toughie. In the case of fighting graffiti, the numbers are on your side. There are way more law-abiding, tax-paying citizens than gang members on any block.

But modern-day society has ingrained in too many of us an impatience and need for immediacy so evident in contraptions like beepers and cellular phones, and information sources like the Internet and live CNN reports.

Pearl City - heck, every community - has got a big problem when it comes to driving too fast, because it's the "law-abiding" citizen rushing around just to get by. So many of us are breaking the law, we don't even realize it.

Hawaii motorists have many words to describe the graffiti and taggers responsible for defacing highway signs, particularly the huge ones that loom over Oahu's freeways.

The law has one word for them: criminals. And the state is fighting back.

Last week, the Honolulu Police Department's Gang Task Force arrested four juveniles from Aiea and Kalihi following a monthlong investigation. The 14-year-olds allegedly belong to a group calling themselves ITK - "Impossible to Katch" or "Insanity to Kings."

More arrests are expected as police identify other members and other tagging groups.

The ditches seem to be the one thing holding back graffitti writers from vandalizing buildings, walls, etc. And really if you think about it you and everyoen else are vandalizing the ditch with your own sewage. So really painting there isn't much different. As for teh bombers and toys, stop going with the fad of graffitti. Only do it if you like art otherwise find something better to do with your time. Join a club or a sports team or something. Just don't get the true graffers caught for your actions. And uncle boy how the hell is bombing stuff gonna help. We have let 3 new people in AF, and each one of those three deserved to be part of our family. They aint toys in our eyes. I saw that movie out in San Francisco. Its soso, lots of drama and bullshit. it is intertaining if your fucked up though.
theres this other movie comming out its a documentary though on SF graffiti from the early 80s till now, lots of painting looks a hell of a lot more interesting.

i admit, if it does come out on dvd, it will be in my collection of dvd's. beat street that was our one resource for graff. 10 years ago i saw it again and couldn't believe how cheesy it was. and at the time everyone idolized that movie. everyone i knew could recite the whole movie. wild style another movie everyone thought it was the dopest movie to come out. and now when you watch it, the story is almost as cheesy. the graff was killer, but the storyline was so corny.
