(Chicago) -- A group of "taggers" was charged with misdemeanors early Tuesday after police investigating a report of gunshots discovered their van filled with spray paint and photographs of their graffiti.

Five males between the ages of 16 and 23, whose identities were not provided, were charged with one misdemeanor count of possession of spray paint and one count of reckless endangerment for their use of fireworks, according to Belmont District Lt. John Schulz.

Police were called when area residents thought they had heard gunshots coming from a van at 3655 N. Artesian Av., Belmont District Sgt. Kent Erickson said.

Police pulled over the van at the intersection of Nelson Street and Western Avenue only to find that the men in the van had been lighting fireworks, Erickson said.

What the police then found inside the van was much more revealing, Erickson said. "There was all this paint," he said.

Inside the vehicle, police found many containers of spray paint and photographs of their acts of vandalism and graffiti artwork, according to Erickson.

One of the photographs confiscated by police showed a Chicago Transit Authority bus marred with spray paint and other graffiti, Erickson said.
