try not posting pictures all in one long line...and just so you know,
this is a thread for photography as art, not for you to post a bunch
of blurry ass photos of girls in skirts. If you're bad at photography
and trying to improve, then you're in the right place, but if you just
want to post pictures of girls in skirts, this isn't the place to do it.
Keep that in mind.

Yeah, birds are pretty overused in most art media, photo included. I suppose bird imagery carries connotations of freedom, life & transcendence when they're shown flying the opposites of those when they're dead. Also, they have really broad appeal. Birds are still pretty interesting though...

How long did you develop them for? I thought the only way to increase contrast with developing was to keep the film in the tanks for longer than usual.

I tried printing the second of the far off center girl with a 1 1/2 filter and it came out practically black and white, no tonality at all. So using filters was not an option.
That is correct, longer increases contrast.
I'm using Ilford HP5+ and Sprint at 1:9.
Normaly, if I spend the time to get the temperatures right, at 71 degrees it takes 8 minutes to develope. It's gotten much colder here in the last week or so and the water is now running at like 65 degrees. I was in a rush and didn't exactly see what the temp really was and just assumed it was around 70 or so. At 68 degrees it should be 10 minutes, so I accidently cut back on time.
Also, today we discovered some fuck put the paper developer in place of the film developer(sprint comes in the big like 5 gallon boxes with the little tap that all look the same) so most of my prof have been suggesting all the grain in my photos is from that if I did use it which honestly I can't remember if I did or not.
Yesterday I spent literally 10 hours in the darkroom.
Kevin/My work load weighs a ton because i'm public enemy number 1

That was an odd photo. Me and my friend went up on that bridge and this person is just sitting there. It didn't even look like they were doing anything. I'm not even sure if its a guy or a girl. They looked over at us once and then just continued staring straight ahead. I kinda wanted to go closer, but the person seemed really sketched out, so we decided it was in our best interests not to bother them.

that lomograph photography is sweet! also, cipher, those airport shots are sweet. bathroom photos must be kinda akward to shoot, huh? i mean, you must have to be quick and covert or get booted by Tom Ridge's best and brightest. Adbusters had some slick images of girls getting made up in bathroom mirrors and such a few issues back, which somehow seem similar to the urinating geriatric guy.

In town there's thiss group of kids who are called "Zoo Bombers". What they do is find kids bikes, abandoned kids bikes, and take them to the the top of the local zoo. Which is on a large hill. They wait till the dark hours of the day. The road down is twisty and very dark due to lots and lots of trees. So the danger risk is way up there when you consider that they're on kids bikes and haulin ass. When everyone has reached the bottom they all continue down to the city together where they ride to the same bike post every Sunday. Then, they all make an "art piece" out of all the bikes and lock them up. Eventually, the bikes pile up and the city removes them. But there's always something there. Has been for a good part of a year or so now.
Now you know...

Because i run across old ones all the time that i can cop for people if they want me to, or if there are special ones you have to have. Just enlighten me, that would be tots like whoa....

I collect for profit AND pleasure.
I use each of the cameras I buy, but I also sell some after I've tested them.
And yes, some Polaroids have different features/uses.
Some cameras take specific Polaroid film as well.
Be it 600 Integral, 669 Color Peel-Apart, Time-Zero Integral..and so on.
For each type of film there are at least 50+ models of cameras.
So, that's a lot of collecting.

at the moment....my 350 reigns supreme as my favorite polaroid.
I'm still trying to get my hands on an sx-70.
rage, have you come across any 180s or 195s yet?
some dude was selling a bunch of them on ebay as a unit. one of them was a 195. dudes were coming out of the woodwork trying to get him to sell it seperate.
I haven't come across a single polaroid in any of the pawn shops and thritstores I've checked. I've even got family members looking at garage sales now.
-Rage-
10-29-2004, 07:21 PM
Oh man.
In an LJ Polaroid community a girl I talk to just got a 180 in a Salvation Army for a few bucks.
She had no idea it was worth about 200.
Then I told her why.
Never come accross a 180 or 195.
I've seen them at Photography conventions for hundreds of bucks or on eBay.
And I'm not spending that kind of money.
I've found ONE SX-70 in a thrift store (which I purchased), but they are harder to find.
I have a feeling that when a Thrift store merchandiser holds a SX-70, they have no idea how to open it... thus they have no idea it's a camera, so they probably toss it.
My favorite is the 250. It's sleek, black, and I can attatch a lot of extra equipment to it for interesting photos.
SteveAustin
10-29-2004, 07:28 PM
what are you attaching to it? close up lens kit made for it?
I mainly love the fact that the focus and view finder are in one window only. that small ass focus window drives me insane...especially since I wear glasses.
-Rage-
10-29-2004, 07:34 PM
I've got the #191 Cable release.
I can attatch my hand held flash too.
I also just hold various lenses in front of the camera, such as; close-up, wide angle, fisheye, UV...
I really want the Self Timer and Close-Up kit though.
I like my 250 because I modified it and stuck a 9v battery in there.
Shit is all pimped out.

I always use full frame, at first most of my profs really hated it. My composition class requires you to so I just started doing everything that way. Most profs have grown to accept it because that's all I'll hand in. The only glass I don't do it for is my studio light class because the guy seriously is a douche bag, I've seen him inserted in vaginas to be cleaned, but I just cut the paper down so leave a neat black border and he's fine with that.
Most of those were for personal use, some for classes so I just printed full frame.

How easy is it for polaroid film to go bad?
I was trying to do some proofing the other day when shooting some 4x5 stuff(using the polaroid 55 film) and every polaroid I was doing came out black. My actual film negatives shot at the same f/stops and shutter speeds were fine. I even tried different developing times.
The film as been in my trunk for the last week and it's been nothing but cold so I know that can't be hurting it.
I'm really bitter about this, a 20 exposure box is like $45 and I wasted like 8 of them trying to figure out what was wrong.

I've never used 55 film, but from past experiences with other polaroid film, it seems like it gets messed up very easily. It might even be possible polaroid film can get messed up from the cold. Not positive about unexposed film, but i know that photos i've taken in cold weather don't turn out as well and sometimes even don't turn out. If anyone here would know, it would be AA.
MisPantalonesEstaEnfuega
11-06-2004, 02:16 PM
I'm not sure the cold has anything to do with it because when I bought it it was sitting in a fridge.
Captain Anger Pants would know!
Dear Captain Anger Pants,
When I purchased my Nikon body I was given a deal on a variable focus lens(28mm-80mm). This the only lens I own as I am impoverished college student. In my Fundamentals of Photography we class we performed tests to make sure our lenses were at the best quality they could be at. The meant we went through photographing newspaper at every f/stop for every focal length our lens had. Once developing my film and making a contact sheet I realized that my lens is unable to focus sharply between 28mm and 50mm which really sucks. So I need a new lens. This mean provided I come up with a couple hundred dollars by tomorrow I will more than likely bump into you at the Camera Convention.
See you soon hombre,
-K.

Haha, oh man. My late night thought process is miserable. Yes, i'm fully aware you can keep polaroid film in a fridge, i just failed to think of that last night. Well, in that case, i'm really no help to you. My appologies, i tried.

Cheif Fire Pants;
If you left your film in the car, that's actualy not good.
I know the temeratues recently went close or below 40 lately.
This can actually throw off the balance of the chemicals in the packs.
It's best to keep the film stored in a COOL and DRY place.
While it was in your car it probably also went from COLD to Warm/HOT which destroyed the chemicals more with moisture.
Also, I assume you did do this, but when taking the film out of refrigeration, it must sit for a few hours befire use.
Here is a data sheet for the 55 film:
http://www.polaroid.com/service/filmdatasheets/4_5/55fds.pdf
Allllllllllllsoooooooo.. my AIM is on all night.
If you are serious about going, let me know what time you may arrive.
I'm about 30 min from the place.
I'll leave you an IM with my cell #.
Once again.. to anyone in the Philly area who want to see/buy a shitload of awesome photographic equipment...

^^^ wow kick ass.
Yea, there were A LOT of medium formats there.
I saw some nice ones for pretty cheap.
By the way, that Polaroid Land 180 Model was $450.
BUT it came with the case, filter kit, close-up kit, flash and all the other rare goods. That and it was SUPER clean. I was tempted, but.. half a grand.. damn.
She also had a 195 Model for 350, with no case and a cracked cover.. blah.
MisPantalonesEstaEnfuega

half a grand for a polaroid? shit, it better clean your house and give you blow jobs for that money...
What size is your fish eye?
I've realized they are a complete novelity and am looking for a more practical one. Something that is full frame and mildly distorted...I'm thinking like 18mm? Does that sound right?
Anyone?
-Rage-
11-07-2004, 08:54 PM
haha the Polaroid Land SE BJ.
Bitch...
http://cyberdenis.topcities.com/nlens-1.htm
My Phoenix fisheye isn't the best. It has more distortion around the edges than most because it's a .25X with a longer focal range.
This kills the edges compared to a .45X, with a shorter focal range, the edges would be more in focus...

ckit,
Technically they take Time-Zero (SX-70) Film, but they can be adapted to take regular 600 Film.. as seen above.
Time-Zero film can be find at most Photo stores.
It used to be carried in mart chains like K-Mart and Wal-Mart, but not anymore.
So, your best bet is a local shop.

Yo..
I recently bought an SX-70 Sonar camera...
http://www.rwhirled.com/landlist/pics/campics/Sonar.jpg
One on the left..
The SX-70 cameras technically take Time-Zero film, but can be modified to take 600 film.
But since the film is a different speed the color suffers.
I lost my old filters and you can see that the photos are really yellow/orange/red.
Anyways.. to get a longer exposure I had to tape over the Electric Eye, which registers how much light is being taken in.
Cover up the eye with electrical tape and it eleminates the timer.
Thus, a bulb setting.
Thanks for the feedback too!

I thnk i have the same camera as the one on the right. can you cover the electric eye on that one too, and change exposure times? which part is the electric eye, i dont even fucking know. can that camera be modified to use any film but 600?
thanks.

mack,
If the camera IS an SX-70, than you should have no problem.
An SX-70 folds out. The picture above shows one folded (right) and one open (left).
The Electric Eye (sensor) is on the far right of the camera.
The lighten/darken control is right on top of it.
You can only use Time-Zero or 600 film in an SX-70.
Here's a users guide for it:
http://www.chemie.unibas.ch/~holder/SX70.html
If you want to load 600 film in the SX-70 do the following...
-= Get piece of thin cardboard the size of a Polaroid.
-= Open the SX-70's film bay
-= Note the small metal latch in the front center of the film bay.. This blocks the bay from taking anything but Time-Zero film.
-= Place the carboard 2/3 of the way into the bottom bay.
-= Now place a new pack of 600 Film on top and load it into the camera, making sure NOT to let go of the carboard.
-= Once the film is 3/4 of the way in, pull out the carboard, push the film in completely and close the film bay.
-= Now it's ready.
Good luck.

I've been printing on this really cheap but fantastic Iflord Fiber Based warmtone paper all week and really lucked out with a lot of my prints but unfortunetly for this thread these were all printed at 11x14 and will not fit in my scanner. I imagine school has big scanners somewhere, probably monday I'll post my big prints but as for now here are the only 8x10s I printed this week, nothing special just some assignments.

I wasn't going to print this for the class but I thought it was too funny not too. "What the fuck are you doing with that reflector?"
Like I said, nothing special. You're all just lucky I didn't post my product shots of a yuengling bottle using three different types of light, sooooo exciting.

FirePants.
I had the same problem too a while ago.
I also used 11x14 Ilford Fiber that wouldn't fit on my tiny scanner.
I scanned segments and stitched the print together in Photoshop...
Peep it:
http://www.angryalan.com/photohost/misc/32.jpg
Holga Print.. exposures were slightly overlapping by accident.
My professor saw the 8x10 print and said go with it.. but bigger paper.
She was right. I love it.
ckit,
I'm not sure the One Step's will work.
The SX-70's are more SLR than a fixed One Step.
I've got a Polaroid thread somewhere in Channel zero...

My how the collection has grown in the past year, honestly that's ridiculous.
I am extremely impressed by your holga shot and it's inspired me to actually use mine again. I had been using 35mm film and got some mixed results but nothing fantastic. I think I may order some 120 film at this very moment.
on a side note, I picked up an old TLR at a thrift store over the summer that took 620 film(120 film on a smaller reel, that stopped making it for the most part but it isn't hard to come by) but I forced a roll of 120 in there anyway and actually found the shot roll in my glove box the other day so hopefully I'll get around to developing it this week...I need bigger reels...

I've got a roll of Tri-X in my Holga now.
Then again, I must have a roll or pack of film in every camera I own.
I hate that.
I get started with a camera and forget about it for a long time.
MisPantalonesEstaEnfuega

yeah I tend to have that problem too.
how it breaks down:
SLRs:
Nikon N75- Currently has ilford HP5+****
Nikon EM w/Motor Drive- currently has fujichrome in it
Minolta SRT 200 - no film
Minolta SRT 202 - fujichrome
Other:
Holga - no film!!
Anscoflex II TLR - no film!
Bell&Howell J30(?) - neopan!
Toyo 45CX View Camera - this doesn't hold film but I do have three film holders loaded.
Polaroids:
Polaroid Square Shooter 2 Land Camera - None
Polaroid Swinger Model 20 Land Camera - No longer make film
Polaroid Colorpack II Land Camera - none
Polaroid Automatic 103 Land Camera - 669 about 3 exposures left
Since I did this I suggest everyone do the same, just post up what cameras you frequently use. Should be neat.
****Yo, HP5 is my shit. I rock this in all formats! I've got the following sitting in my fridge:
20 36exp. 400iso rolls of 35mm
100 pack 4x5 sheet film
Going to pick up some 120mm HP5 today.

Well, I'm really into getting actual prints, but anything would be cool. Would we be able to do the "pass around" thing? Or would we just have to have partners or something?
We could do the kind of Secret Santa thing. Like, if everyone submitted their address, and one person emailed everyone their "destination". Does that make sense? It does in my head.
Would it be more worth it if there was some type of theme? Or at least more than one print/photograph? Maybe the theme thing is going a bit far.
I've got Winter break coming up. So, I wouldn't be able to get shit going until January.

The secret santa thing doesn't make sense to me but i'm interested in it.
The theme might get a little complicated but I'm sure if we all agree on a theme and a deadline it might go smoothly.
My break(or lack there of) is from 12/24-1/09 so I'm here for awhile.

I imagine this is not limited to people studying photgraphy, so, would everyone be able to mount their prints if they weren't in school for photo?
It would add a bit of difficulty if mounting was a requirement..But I kinda dig it.
Secret Santa thing: Say there are 10 people who want to be involved. 9 of those people give their mailing address and email address to the tenth person. The tenth person then randomly assigns mailing addresses to the other 9 people. So, everyone has a person to mail their mounted(?) print to, but no one knows who they are receiving their print from. The 10th person will perhaps miss out on this element of mystery, since he or she will have to give someone their mailing address. Or, we could get a "third party" to randomly assign the mailing addresses so no one misses out on the fun. Perhaps a moderator.
Does that make sense? If not, we can just go the simple route and exchange mailing addresses publicly.
Is an acceptable deadline for this Feb 1st? Since we don't even have details together?
MisPantalonesEstaEnfuega
11-18-2004, 08:59 PM
feb 1st works and i am totally diggin the secret santa idea
As for mounting I guess we don't have to make it a requirment but I don't see why it's so hard for someone to spray glue a print to a piece of mount board/cardboard.
