*Rage here..

Shit.
Sorry for that hyrax. Why would you have to pick up a package?
Want me to send you some cash to ship it to ese?

Ferms.. what did you and $360 do?

fermentor666
02-16-2005, 06:27 PM
Shit?? I sent it 3-5 day delivery, insured it for 200 dollars, paid 26 dollars total to send it from the US. I sent it because 360 didn't have the cash to send it out. Sent it last week, forgot to bump the thread.

I honestly have no idea why you had to pay to get it, I paid all the postage neccessary to get it out from the states. All I put down on customs was that it was a camera, sketchbook, and extra film. Sending it 3-5 days for 25 dollars came with an insurance for 100 bucks, and for an extra dollar I could get 100 more insurance so I paid that. I'm sorry that you had to pay for it, but I can't say that I know why.

fermentor666
02-16-2005, 06:29 PM
360 and I will pitch in some money to you hyrax, he has a "vintage digital camera" that he's willing to send to you, but I'm afraid you'd have to pay for that, too? Is there something about the Canadian post office/customs office that I'm unaware of?

those were shot at the aquarium, no flash, very steady hand (no tripod) and caution to avoid any glare in the shot.
canon powershot A85.. ..excellent fucking camera!
apparently, it does have underwater capabilities (when you get a protective case)

as far as customs fees, i do a TON of overseas shipping here at work, the only times i can recall when a person had to pay to RECEIVE a package was when there was INADEQUATE POSTAGE.
who knows what happened. maybe the postal service typed in the wrong zip code and misjudged the postage amount. dunno.

hyrax
02-16-2005, 08:36 PM
Thanks for the support guys, I'll let you know what ends up happening. I read through some of the customs documentation and I can dispute the charges to get a refund, so I'm gonna give that a shot.

Total was $42.22 canadian:

$17.37 GST/HST
$19.85 PST
$5.00 Handling fee

According to the customs info, I can dispute it if the goods are returned to sender/exporter, I just have to prove it's left Canada. Or, I can claim the Goods were classified or described incorrectly.

I think the second one is the best bet. According to the customs form the value was listed as $248.18, which is the reason for the charges :/ Shouldn't be hard to get them to understand it's a handmade book, some photos and an old polaroid camera that's basically a gift, and isn't even staying in Canada.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

sans sheriff
02-16-2005, 09:22 PM
hyrax,
Definitley see if you can dispute the charges for LESS than the 248.
I assume it's unopened. You could even claim the whole package as something really inexpensive.. like 30 bucks, if that will lessen the fees.
Maybe we can work something out.

Ferms.. did you by any chance get a receipt when you sent it out?
Was it UPS.. FedEx...?

I sent it UPS, 3-5 days. The clerk weighed it, it came out to 25 dollars. 3-5 day shipping includes 100 dollars worth of insurance, for an extra dollar more you can get an extra 100 dollars. I paid the extra 100 dollars because I figured it was worth it in case the thing got lost or damaged. I do have the original receipt but it will be somewhat of a pain in the ass to find since I just moved.

I declared it as a camara, sketechbook, and film like I said. I declared it's worth as 200 dollars since that's what I had it insured for. If that's something wrong that I did, sorry, I've never actually sent a package outside the US. I can try my best to make it up to you.

I assure you I paid the full postage when I sent it out, I wouldn't stick ya with the bill, hyrax.

Customs for certain countries place large import tariffs on high valued items to prevent people from skipping sales/flat tax by ordering expensive equipment from elsewhere. By declaring at $200, you essentially put a big sign on it that said, "THIS IS VALUABLE. TAX IT". I'm guessing the camera was actually worth much less than $200. For future reference you're best off declaring items shipped to other countries at their actual value or far less than it depending. It was definitely an honest mistake though.

fermentor666
02-18-2005, 01:11 AM
Yeah, someone just told me that the fee was probably because of taxes due to me declaring it as 200 bucks. Honest mistake, but still stupid. Sorry Hyrax, if you can't get the money back let me know and I'll get you back. And 360 says he has a "vintage digital camera" he can give you.

I paid for it and have written up a letter to dispute the charges. I'll be mailing it off in the next couple days, just need to get me an envelope. I don't think there'll be any problem in getting the money back from them.

I've taken one picture so far but it looks like the film might be damaged. Part of the print is missing a 1cmx2cm part of the negative, it looks like a tear. There are also small black globs on parts of it, and it looks like there were some light leaks :/ Not sure what's going on.

There's 2 more exposures left in the camera and a whole new pack of film left, so I'm wondering what your feelings are on me taking 2 more exposures...

Dunno what the deal is with the film, 360's pictures seemed to come out ok, he didn't mention anything about it being damaged. It's possible it could have gotten damaged but there were so many goddamn fragile stamps on it and a big "keep away from heat" message written on the box. Of course, anything can happen with the postal service.

The new pack of film in there is something we bought extra when the film in there when I got the camera didn't work. 360 and I picked it up from his school so it's fairly recent and should work.

You should refer to the small black Manual that I included...

The white edge is what happens when the film is pulled out at an angle. When this happens the developer misses a part of the backing completely, thus leaving just the white.
This can also cause a red/orange along the edge or corner of color prints.

When you pull out the second tab with the picture, pull it straight out and don't slow down or stop.

* oh yea.. go ahead and use the last pics.

Good question.

The first time (http://www.angryalan.com/photohost/polaroid/MichaelLARGE.jpg) I did a Polaroid Name, I was near an exposed light bulb with a pull string.
I realized I could use a quick flash of it while writing a letter and have myself exposed.

I thought it would be cool to use that technique for the last letter.
I think of it as a sort of signature. It's an Angry Alan original becuase i'm in it.

*note:
For the most recent two Polaroid Names I've used a small handheld flash instead of the pull sting bulb, which broke.

yeah, this is waht i have, i love it. I want an slr for the simple reason i want to change the lenses and things of that nature, its like ive pushed my camera to the limits, and basically i did what i wanted, which was get into the digital realm, and play with photography to see if i really liked it before i spent large bucks.

plus
-small and compact, portable
-great pictures
-reasonable price
-12/13 shooting modes
-ergonomic

cons
-lenses arent really changable, you can get more, but eh, its really not worth it
-plastic body, ive snapped something on mine
-screen is small, cant manual focus and shit very well

i got to play with one of these this weekend, i agree, its ergonimics are quite the odd, but it was still fun none the less, if i had more time to play with, i would probably enjoy it more

good luck with what you get

im lookin at a digital rebel to introdue me to the digital slr world, then the 20d, and ive heard good things about the nikon slrs, i might try one of those...

I'm kind of pissed that I didn't know about this book earlier.
I would have tried to find out if there was a way to submit some work.

Meh it's okay..
Maybe the PPA will get some exposure.

The thing about the Sony F717's ergonomics is that they are strange if you are shooting it from eye level, but after owning a F707 for quite a while I learned that the trick was to put it on a neck strap, and shoot with the lens swiveled up from somewhere around waist level. From that position, not only is holding the camera more comfortable, but with your elbows and upper arms against your body, it is stabilized better than when held near the face, allowing for sharper low-light type photography. I remember being able to handhold 1/15th second shots with that camera that I simply cannot manage to keep steady enough for with the Sigma SD9.
