thank you
ok heres my idea, based off the battle thread from paper chase
PHOTOBATTLE
1.to begin a photo battle you may either throw out a challenge to a specific person, or to the entire thread, in which, any member may join in at any time, but no more than 5 competitors per battle.
2. battles may either follow a category, theme, camera/film type such as (but not limited to) Digitial, action shots, B&W film, poloroid...or may you simply throw out an "anything goes" challenge. you may even chose what you are going to photograph(ie: trains, bums, buildings)
3. when you throw out a challege you must set a due date, the first taker to the challenge may ask you to change the due date, but after the first two people in a battle have agreed upon a date it is in stone and people who join the battle afterwards must abide by it.
please keep in mind, not everyone uses digital, so if you are throwing out an "anything goes" challege and the due date is tomarrow, you are pretty much throwing out an all digital/poloroid battle. be resonable with your due dates.
4.in a battle you may set the citeria to have have each competitor enter a single shot, a related set(each image in the set has a simlar object, envirorment etc) or and unrelated set. i would say for times/bandwith sake there should be no more than 5 photos per competitor.
5. you also have the option of setting the judging type: this means that voters will be voting on a specific aspect of the photos(ie: contrast, composition, depth of feild etc etc etc). or you can just keep shit simple and ignore this option, choice is yours.
6. on the due date, after all participants have posted the thread shall vote, first person to recieve five votes wins. to vote you simply post the name of the battle and the persons name.
at the end of the voting PM me with the results, include the criteria of the battle, the participants names, and how many votes each person recieved, and every sunday i will post the weekly winners.
well. thats what i was thinking would work good...what yall think?

I think more than 5 competitors.
I think more than 5 votes to win.

(I think the photo battle is a great idea however, maybe you should start a new thread titled "photography battles" that way it doesn't drag all of the photos posted on here into the battle, they will be seperate images & could post on both threads if you wanted to?? just a thought..)

zombie:
i was already going to make a new thread once we get the details sorted out, as far as using pictures already posted...the point is that you can't use any photos you already have, they have to be tkaen FOR the battle, or maybe i am totally misunderstanding your question.
PS: those long exposur flicks are tight, like some digital tie-dye shit.

Yes they should be new images just for the battle. I say open the battle for maybe 1-2 weeks and just see how many people enter. Then possibly just open the voting for perhaps 1 week and see who has the most amount of votes at the end.....
Just making suggestions.

i made the comment about slide film being expensive to me to process... or for my money and what i want out of my photos... i dont think i even paid 10 bucks the last time i had 35mm film processed... the only thing i dont like about slides that i like about prints or even digital photos is the sharing issue... its too much money for me to really only view in a dark room with a slide projector... for my use of photographs slides are all but useless... maybe for cataloging all the artwork jammed under all the beds in my house and overflowing my closet.. maybe for that.. but for everyday photographs no, not so much... last year (04) i took 3000 photos.. divided by 36 times 12 = wow... that includes brackets and snapshots... but still slides are not for me... sorry for the rant but i was scrolling around 120z for the first time in a week or so and found a post and yea...
wait it was a year and a half...

pictures from inside my boy's house that now sits abandoned in the slum-iest of slums. oddities abound... it's like walking through a giant version of a homeless man's shopping cart. the walls are lined with speakers and amps, stacks of electronics tower over you in in every room. did someone say baby carriages? ... yes, yes we have baby carriages. at the end of the hall is the lamp room. have you ever seen a 6-foot tall lamp made of cork? the basement is devoted entirely to bicycles. you have never seen such an assortment of bikes in your life. if anyone needs a blue, sparkly low-rider bike with a sissy bar and a fuzzy leopard-print banana seat, a head-light, and a shifter nob (what the fuck? it's only one speed)... get in touch with me. plus, every corner you walk around, you're caught off guard by some shit like this --

No problem, just trying to help out the folks like me who don't have monsterous monitors. I appreciate it. 600 by 450 or 800 by 600 (?) works well for everyone i do believe. Like i said, if you have an image you want people to see in high res, just link it up. I know i've done that before on some photos that had a lot of detail.

Scanning negatives is a bitch. This is from a roll of neopan 400. I'm kinda disappointed with how some of it turned out. I was told it was high contrast, tight grain, and i guess some of them turned out like that but quite a few of them had a whole lot more flat gray than i'd like. Maybe i just shot them poorly. The contrast and brightness is slightly adjusted in some of these, but its all adjustments i could easily make in a darkroom.

The fly picure is nice... it also reminds me that I need to pick up a 1:1 macro lens of some kind. Anybody have experience with any Sigma brand macro zooms? I'm pretty much stuck with sigma because of the SA mount on my camera unless I get the M42 adapter and an older lens, so any recommendations on M42 macros that are decent would be helpful (and cheaper too).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v454/oneblushu/fly1.jpg
i just spent about 20 minutes (at after 3 in the morning) shooting a wad of paper out of a slingshot at a huge fly... yes i said sling shot.. when i hit it it fell but woke up when i was taking pictures.. so i snuffed it out with a cotton ball a cup and some rubbing alochol... then i took pictures...
(repost from another message board i visit after getting funny responce from the fly photo and description.....)
it was actually pure boredome at work... i was in my bathroom and i heard it buzzing around... and i have this kinda rowdy crossbow "toy" that shoots these plastic darts with suction cups on the end... i really wanted to shoot the damn thing with that.. only i couldnt find darts anywhere... which pretty much made me sad.. so i saw my slingshot.. and used a wad of paper a lil bigger than a marble... and shot and shot and shot... and i even grazed it a few times... it didnt like me shooting at it too much.. it kept protecting itself getting close to the light bulbs... anyway i finally nailed it (i wasnt shooting at a real close range mind you) and it just kinda dropped... when it fell it did that thing fighter planes do when their shot down in movies.. where they kinda spiral nosedive.. anway so i set him up to take photos seeing as he was kinda a bigger fly... and i stand him up (tweezers) and he stands just fine.. it looked like he was still alive.. i set up mi mini tripod and im not getting the light like i wanted... so i spot lighted him with my mag light... and all of a sudden after the light being on him a few minutes he starts walking around... bastard.. thats not helping.. so i pour some rubbing alcohol into a lil paper bathroom cup and pour the excess in the sink...i put the cup upsidedown over the lil bastard and go play tonyhawk a few rounds... when i come back i carefully lift up the cup... not only is the lil bastard still alive he is climbing around on the inside of the cup.. fuck me... soooo.. i soak a cotton ball with the alcohol again.. i put the cup ontop of the cotton ball.. and prolly less than 2 minutes later he is dead on his back lying in the pool of liquid death...
lights camera action.... the only problem is now, he wont stand up anymore seeing as he is dead....

i got it home and noticed a small crack on the side of it, and theres a sliver of opening into where the film goes. i couldnt get a very good picture, but to sans sheriff or anyone else...would this let in a lot of light making the camera useless? what would you suggest to patch it up?

Congrats fr8's,
First off, you're right it does take Time-Zero film, BUT you can use basic 600 film also.
I suggest using a pack of 600 first, this way you can see if there is a light leak or not.
Looking at the damage on your OneStep I can tell you it's unlikely it will affect your Polaroids.
If it does, just throw some layers of electrical tape on the outside.
To use a pack of 600 film in the OneStep you only need two things.
A pack of 600 film (duh) and a thin piece of cardboard.
Take the cardboard and slide it in 3/4 of the way into the film bay, keeping it in contact with the bottom of the bay.
Now, push in the 600 film pack halfway (on top of the carboard), then remove the carboard and insert the pack of film the rest of the way.
Close the bay door and the top film card should pop right out as usual.
Make sense? It's really easy.
Now, technically you need some filters to compensate the film ISO from Time-Zero to 600, but it's not a big deal.
Just make sure you turn the Light/Dark dial all the way to dark.
Hope it works for you!
fr8lover
05-04-2005, 02:52 AM
thanks for the help! yeah, upon further inspection it probably wont affect the pictures, since the film is not only physically in the camera, but in its own case...we'll see.
the good news is theres a shop nearby that sells time zero film for almost as cheap as 600. i always get nervous with pawnshop cameras, but the investment is worth the risk!

I liked your shots but I have one suggestion:
Don't be afraid to get dirty, don't shoot from your face. The Bird and the Worm technique, shoot from different angles.
Nice stuff though, glad someone still uses film.

I just ordered and box of 55 and 59 film, I've got a show coming up at some local coffee shop(not a big deal at all) but I'm doing all transfers and emulsion lifts. I'll post up the final stuff before the show. I'm hyped.

mackfatsoe. the reason my polaroids are blue is that 600 film is the wrong speed for the sx70 i got. so to compensate i needed a neutrel density filter, but i'm ghetto so i put a square of blue and red clear plastic over the lens as a filter. seems to work alright.

More Updates.
I am currently scanning the book and it's taking FOR FUCKING EVER.
I have 38 pages to scan front and backp.
I've scanned and edited 5 pages so far.
..Pretty much the front cover and my pages.
I started at 10:30p, it's now 1:30p.
That's 3 hours to scan and edit about 6/7 pages.
At this rate, it will take me about 18 hours to finish.
This is going to take longer than I expected.
I still want to make a fancy interactive flash menu before I post a thread.

Yeah, those are digital. I flew out to see my girlfriend in Chicago and only took my dad's digi. I just finished all my final projects and I was completely photo'd out and didn't even want to take a camera but i felt naked without one. Plus, everytime i've previously flown out there I've always had a problem with the x-rays fogging my film. They tell you anything under 800iso is safe, that's bullshit. I've had 100iso film fog hardcore. So yeah, those will probably be the only digital stuff i post up.
As for contrast, I was touching them up in photoshop and some of them practically fell apart with more contrast. 5 megapixels is a lot when you can see them. I too enjoy really contrasty photos but after the last year of nothing but black and white printing for your teachers and having to have your prints dead on, it's force of habit to try and get things dead on.
Oh, and my dad rocks the Canon Powershot S50.s

I have a pentax 6x7.
they don't make a digital back for it but the way i see it, i don't need one. The only advantage is the imidate turn around.
If you buy a medium format film scanner($1000 - or $200-$300 for a good flatbed with a mask) you get the same exactly quality as a 22megapixel back for more than $9k less.
Also another opition, shooting medium format with a digital back is stupid, just go buy some standard professional dSLR. To shoot medium format with a digital back defeats the aesthetic quality of medium format much like digital ruins the craftsmanship of photography.
There is a reason most galleries won't accept digital prints.
Have fun when your hard drive crashes.

oh, and if you do go digital you should really consider using a Mac and make sure you only use some quality lens(I suggest nikon lens or canon. If you can't afford it Sigma is a must. Avoid Tamron(decent but not the best), Takor, and Vivitar)
Random babble on Sigma:
When I used to shoot 35mm I'd only use Nikon lenses(so pricey but totally worth it in the long run) My room mate shoots with a Nikon N90 and uses all Sigma lenses. One day I left my 12mm-24mm lens at our apartment so i borrowed his and i was shocked by how crisp they are. Definitely great lenses for the price.
As for their digital SLR i can't say much because i honestly don't know nor do i have any experience. I'm pretty sure GnomeToys shoots with one(i could be wrong) but his stuff is pretty quality so i guess that can speak for the camera.

I would have to agree. I'm using one of the cheaper sigma lenses made (28-200mm F3.5/F5.0?) and it is pretty sharp over most of the range.

I'm using the SD9.
It is a good camera, but has its issues. If you're in the market for a digital SLR right now I'd suggest buying something else, Sigma doesn't seem to be coming up with anything new. I played with a Nikon D70 around christmas last year after my aunt bought one and it focused so fast in AF mode compared to the sigma that I almost shat myself.
The SD9 has some serious power issues, which they did not fix correctly on the SD10. I get about 150 shots off a set of rechargeable AAs, which thankfully is all I have needed. Then you need to replace the 2x CR123a every 1000 shots or so. In the SD10, they took out the need for CR123as which made it almost impossible to power the camera with normal batteries, so people have been buying rechargeable CRV3s instead of AAs. The jackasses on the sigma discussion forum over at dpreview will swear up and down that this is somehow better than a proprietary battery system. I have to disagree after using batteries from Sony that would take 600 pictures without losing a bar of power.
High ISO performance is crap, hence indoor / bar / concert photography usually doesn't turn out good. This right here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/Lederhose/IMG04128.jpg
Is the best I've been able to get out of ISO400 in full daylight. It doesn't look bad, but that noise that is there is sometimes ALL that is there in lower light photos.
For a daytime landscape or city camera though, it can't be beat. I'll be buying a Canon next anyway, unless Sigma manages to address these problems.
