For the polaroid shooters here: I found a 320 Land Camera at the thrift store yesterday for 7 bucks with a flashgun. With the cost of polaroid film and my familiarity with digital, I'd suspect I'll probably shoot about a 10 pack of film with it every month or two if I buy it. Is this model easy enough to find film for? Anything else I need to know?



Here are some pictures from last week. Haven't really shot much lately, but some friends wanted me to take some pictures of them playing. I hate indoor photography, and I really hate indoor people photography. I have to handhold the flash and use bulb exposure because it fucks with my camera's circuitry. Some of them turned out ok anyway.

Yah, I like the 1st and 4th ones best also. It looks like you're thinking about creative composure, that's good.

The photos you've posted, however, look overexposed. Most photographers aim for a full range of tonalities - white, black and everything inbetween. Maybe it's the scans or WalMart printing or an Fstop too open, but none of yours shots have black tones, just dark grey to washed-out white. The washed-out-look isn't bad but maybe work on some punchier contrast.

Also, this will be nearly irrevelant if you're moving to a D-SLR 'cause image editing programs allow you to easily tweak contrast and whitebalance.

thanks for the feedback.. and i hear what your saying about the overexposure... some of it was due to my camera, as the battery was damn near dead so the shutter was slightly slower, but some was also because of personal error..

im looking forward to working with color, and that should provide me with even more room for improvement haha

I shot some stuff tonight, climbed up a mountain above the treeline, set up camp finished off a roll of color and popped of some black and white. Decided that shivering all night in a tent at 13,000ft wasnt a good way to spend the night. I'll post em when they get developed.

I don't know what it is about the majority of people posting on here, but there are definitely common themes that are right out front for a lot of us. That's pretty cool actually considering we're all sitting/shooting in different locales. The imagined 12oz group show would be a sight....

and it is kind of strange how everyone around here kind of views their surroundings differently from the majority of the population, but similar to each other. it undoubtly has something to do with the influence of art, graffiti, skateboarding, and the other common interests a lot of people around here share. a 12oz group show would be on fire, i know that much.

Looks like the creepers are coming out of the closet... i also have been viewing this thread for quite some time but have finally decided to join the "club".
In regards to what similarities we all shoot for subject matter, all of us on here have common interests (graffiti, freight culture, nature, night time, etc...) so it's no suprise to me that we all decide to snap our buttons at these subjects.
A lot of these subjects are also quite common for image makers to take notice of, such as shadows, textures, compostions, etc..
I think as photographers we look at things slightly differently that the common person, maybe being intrigued/excited about shadows cast by wires. While an average joe only sees boring wires and nothing else to it.

as for 'regular' film, i think the cheaper, the better with 'toy' cameras. expired 120 can be scooped up at any respectable photo store for cheap cheap. if you find some old kodak UC 200, let me know.

its a real chep wideangle atachment that i screw onto my canon 18-55 lens.



if i had to guess, i would say its shootinglike a 10mm wide angle.

Edit: I never did get that polaroid, I did find a Yashica 635 TLR in good condition with the important parts of the 35mm kit at a local camera store... 120 or 35mm with the same ancient manual camera, sounds like fun. I've been wanting to try out medium format for a while now as it kicks the ass of most digital in clarity and resolution still. Might pick it up this week.

heres some from yesterday... eventful outing actually.. i've noticed an increase in homeless remnants lately, and today i found what could be classified as a hobo hotel.. so many matresses, sleeping bags, coolers, bikes, etc.. there was a hobo there when i found it, i find most of them are either interesting or crazy as hell

alittle bit later walking along the tracks i stopped on a train bridge to get some pictures..then some old guy runs up the side of the tracks, all out of breath and shit, and said "why the hell have you been taking pictures of my house?" .. i proceeded to tell him what i was actually doing, and after he grumbled on like a douche bag for a bit all was good...

also saw a few freights go by, noticed some Risk 9 and SANE.. good day

I was given an old Nikon Coolpix 990 with a broken zoom and autofocus. I didn't care about that though, I was just finally glad to have a camera to play with that I can do long night exposures with. The Sigma SD9 is an amazing camera for lots of things, but it is a finnicky bitch for night photography. Images get ruined with noise above 4 second exposures or so, but I don't have a fast enough lens to get away with anything less than that in most places.

i carry a d70 with me, and a lot of times, i'll have the 80-200, it's a monster of a lens, and you just can't do discreet with it. most of my people shots i take are with the 80mm end, so i'll only be a few feet away from them. other times, i'll be using the 50 or the wide end of my 17-70 and i'll have to get close. well, they do notice. if you act like you shoot pictures of people all the time, they really won't mind. i've shot hundreds of people just on the street and i havn't gotten anyone to complain in like a year. (there was this one time there was this chess bum that looked interesting, but he didn't want his picture taken, so i didn't. his friends were equally interesting and i shot them to death). I do get different reactions though, some people smile, some scowl, some just look away. whatever happens though, i give them a smile and a wave and i'll be on my way. i've never asked permission so... yeah.

if you've seen my shit you know i get real close up to some real mother fuckers. i dont use a zoom lens besides the stock one that came on my rebel. to me its worth the risk, i have had bottles thrown at me, been chased with knives, guns, trash cans. its all good. i rarley ever ask for permission, i want to get pictures of people being people, not people being photographed, if that makes any sense. as far as being embarased/scared, i am 6 foot tall, 230 lbs of jackedness and i have tattos, usually the subject is the one scared of me.

I got a chance to mess around a bit in a rediculously well equipped studio this weekend, so I'll have some stuff to post up later. But before I can do that...does anyone know how to import .cr2 raw files into iphoto? I have v5.0.4 which is supposed to recognize them but it doesn't seem to want to.

the picture all depend on the lens, the camera really doesn't have anything to do with it unless it has gaping holes in it to leak light in. (re: holga toy cams, they're fun to use, a whole nother medium of art, but light leakage like no other that adds to the effect) I believe pentax cameras use carl zeiss lens'. which have excellent optics. there won't be a difference in quality in a picture taken with your century old pentax than in a brand new Nikon f6

Pentax is the joint. If you ever have aspirations of being a 'serious' photographer, you NEED to experience the manual world... and the old K1000 is a good a start as any. I've used mine as a hammer before. Watch the sprocket though, that thing can get to sticking and ruin a roll pretty fast.

I got 2 assignments tonight and fucked them both up (read: didn't shoot a frame). Input would be appreciated if you've got it....

anyone have shot with this? looks like it's been used as a bat or hammer or something but it works and has aperture priority. uh the AF 85 f/1.4(wonderful lens) is on it because I didn't feel like purchasing any AI lenses. Right now focusing is kind of hard because it's lacking a horizontal split prism so i'm just eyeballing it, otherwise... i dig. oh, it's fuckin' heavy. the shit would kill my neck if i had a strap for it.

anyone here fuck with large format. post that shit. i think some of the pro-fession-al dude's shit(the one with the tracks and old shack) in the couple pages back was a LF shot... i like some of that shit, and INFA RED shots, post that shit too, post em, ima start getting into that junx because my school has a class where they GIVE you a LF cammera for a whole semester..dope shit, i love the way these films can fuck woth the contrasts soooo much, like shots with a lot of clouds.
from what i understand IR film is the hardest shit in the world to shoot with cause you basicly have to guess what the settings are.
i wonder if that shit will be tight or if i will break the shit in half.
plus for me most of my shots besides the killer whore set is all spur of the moment, and i aint got more than 3 seconds tops to take the picture.

so yeah, hook it up with shots(either yours or ones you like) and info on the above said shit.

Someone want to reccomend me a versatile, cheap 35mm slr? i'm getting a darkroom thrown my way for little to no cost, and need a 35mm. worked with a Pentax K1000 awhile back, but it was a friends and haven't needed once since this digital thing.

k1000 is probably the best cheap slr you will find. i have a nikon fe-2 and although it is a little more expensive than the k1000, i like it a lot more. other ones to check out are the pentax mx series. do you have a preferred brand?

nice. i'd like to see that flatland shot done with a little bit of fill flash and a higher shutter speed.

i've been trying to shoot some skateboarding pictures recently, and it's probably been the hardest thing i've done so far with photography. hopefully i'll get some decent results that i can post up sooner or later.
