I always either shoot with my Olympus OM-1 or my digital, Canon Optura Pi
heres the Olympus:
[img]http://www.seemesmile.com/photos4/2941637a.jpg'>
i usually use this Kiron lens, it works super well because its 28-105mm so i can get really close up or wider angle shots, but i can also get an ok amount of zoom. i just throw on my doubler if i ever need more zoom

wierd...i have the same camera as you mr chalupa. i've only used it once though because i just started with this whole image capturing deal. have you found it to work well for you?
MrChupacabra
05-23-2003, 10:49 PM
haha, Mr. Chalupa....yeah, i like my camera a ton, but i did have a slight problem with it not too long ago. This camera was my dads before it came into my hands, and after many long years of use, some of the camera was falling apart slightly and i fucked up like 2 or 3 rolls of film because of light leaks and a messed up light meter. I had to send it off to get fixed which cost a bit, but i don't believe thats a common problem.
Overall though, i really like this camera a lot. Its a nice SLR and i mean, theres nothing super special about it, but it takes good pictures, and i enjoy it, so thats all that really matters in my book.

my 3rd close up - so pic n°4 - is from this tag US GO HOME which isn't really a tag since it has no link with a writer anything, it was done with a brush and looks very old........... it could be a century old for all I know but i can't think of an (old) historical event when the French felt that strongly against that states.........maybe Wilson's arrival for the Treaty of Versailles in 1918 ? anyway i should go back and take a picture of the whole thing...

everyone should fuck around with a polaroid camera at least once. the films expensive usually, but it's worth it. they have their own unique quality to them. i picked up 1 really old polaroid cam (has bellows) and one current polaroid cam from goodwill for $1. If you need a camera and you plan on doing "artistic" photography, check out goodwill and salvation army. crappy cameras can take amazing photos :)
Wish I had a better scanner, can't get good scans of some of my black & white prints, so here's what i've got to offer right now (all 35mm. minolta x700):

I have a roll of Fuji 1600 speed film sitting in my x700 now. Need to finish off the roll.
The Kodak Instamatic has only one flaw. It takes 126 film. I've discovered that only two places in the U.S. develop that type of Kodak film. Grr.
As for the Hitochi, I developed a roll and it came out creepy. some light crept into the camer, but it looks cool. I'll post up in a few hours.

That way i can try to work out a trip to a darkroom and get doubles at the lab all done at once for the first set of trades, instead of repeatedly having to go back and forth and shit.

nice :D i've used polaroid film that had been expired for about 1 year and found that the prints came out ok, but the developing fluid actually leaked out of the corners on some of them, which was a bitchhhhh cause that stuff is caustic i think, and it sucks getting it off.
let's see some scans when you use it

yes! more tunnel shots.
the use of the polaroid film was unsuccessful. the developer dried up or leaked out. i doubt anything wouldve come out on it seeing as how its been expired for 19 years....
and yeah, the gel is caustic. it causes nice alkali burns. awesome.

Question for anyone about double exposures...the question is would this idea hyrax and i were discussing work, and if not, does anyone have some ways that they personally do double exposures.
MrScojangles: Alright, so on your camera, you have some switch or knob that you have to turn before it allows you to rewind the film, correct?
antigregarious: yep
MrScojangles: the thought is that when that is turned to allow it to rewind, the film can't move forward, so you "cock" your camera to take another picture while that is turned, which means the film isn't going to move, but the camera is ready to take another shot
MrScojangles: which technically would be over the shot you just took
MrScojangles: i'm not 100% sure that this would work, but in theory it should...i'm kinda planning on testing that theory soon
antigregarious: hmm...if try to advance the film tho the reel's teeth are still in the film
MrScojangles: hmmm
MrScojangles: but when that rewind knob is turned doesn't it not allow it to move forward?
antigregarious: i dunno i could test it out lol
MrScojangles: like i said...it was just kinda a theory that might work
antigregarious: lemme go get my cam
MrScojangles: i think i'm going to grace 12oz with this conversation and see if anyone can back up or disprove my theory, or possibly tell me their ways of going about with double exposures
Anyone?

double exposure examples (http://www.hirsch-photography.com/pages/experimental/double-exposure/folio_exp002/dexp10_002.html)
Many SLR and some point-and-shoot cameras have multiple-exposure buttons that make creating such pictures simple; on some older SLRs, you may be able to override the film advance by holding in the rewind button while you recock the shutter.

im an idiot who just came upon a really nice camera (minolta if you must know) and im trying to play around with it and get effects. i would just like to ask for a few hints on a couple of things
how do you get the effect of lights trailing across the picture?
what does the speed of a film mean?
do all of you manually focus or let the camera do it?
thanks for the help in advance

light streaks: there should be a "B" setting on the right dial (it'll have other numbers too). This means full manual shutter control. as long as you hold down the shutter release, the shutter will stay open, which allows light to streak across and expose the film. best to use a tripod when doing this, and if you're doing longer open shutter stuff and to ensure you dont shake the camera, use a shutter release cord. 20" one is like $12 CAD
in terms of film speed i can't give a proper answer so i'll leave that up to rage or chupa ;)
my camera is a full manual focus camera. having autofocus would be a benefit cause you can usually override it and go full manual anyways

By leaving the shudder open for a longer period of time by setting your shutter speed on B, aka, holding it open manually. You really should do this with a tripod and a cable release otherwise you're going to be shaky and the picture will get blurry as hell
what does the speed of a film mean?
higher speed film means it doesn't need as much light, but it is going to be more grainy, especially if you're blowing up your film to larger dimensions
do all of you manually focus or let the camera do it?
On my SLR, i don't have the option of the camera focusing, so yes, i manually focus. On my digital it really depends what i'm shooting. If i';m just taking pictures of graff in the middle of the day i'll let it autofocus, but if i'm going for some close up shot i'll usually have to do it manually.

"shudder"
Buck Fush here's what you do.
*I have no idea what you know about camera's, so I'll lay it all out there*
First off film speed comes anywhere from ISO12 to ISO6400. The slower the film speed, i.e. 25-400, the better quality your image will look. The faster the film speed, 800 and up, the more grainy the image will be.
For your set up you'll want to try an ISO100 film. Try any brand you'd like and black and white or color, no matter.
It would be best to shoot anytime from dusk and after. Like hyrax said, set up your camera on a tripod or steady surface.
Next, change you shutter speed to the "Bulb" seting or "B" on your camera.
After that, change your aperture all the way down to f/22. This is the ring on the lens itself.
Now you can press the shutter release button and hold it for as long as you'd like. Just experiment. And like hyrax said, it would be better to use a cable release to keep your shots more steady.
Hope this helps.

that ones a bit of a cheat. its a shot from my digi that has the standard pre-set modes. I set it to "no flash" so it takes a longer exposure, and voila! the trick is keeping the camera steady against the window of the car as its moving.

for slides I'm using sensia 400, but the print stuff is mostly generic or konica 400iso. I did a bit of 800, and 200, but the vast bulk of shooting is with 400.

Anyone?
yes this method works with my camera, an olympus OM40. after i have taken the first shot i lift up the small rewind lever and take up the slack. while holding down the rewind button and keeping the lever in place, i 'cock' the shutter in the normal way but the film doesn't move. i then take the next shot or shots on top of the first, usually with disasterous results. :D

All of my photogrpahy to date has been with fixed-focus snapshot cameras or digital. I just go myself a lomo, but that is automatic so it easy too. I know the effects I want to achieve and have an idea of the images i want on film, but don't know which equipment/film will help me achieve them. Where should I start? A massive question I know. I was gonna get a few photography for dummies type books to to introduce me to a loads of things, but was wondering if anyone could reccomend any books in particular? Or any other pointers? A non selection of images from the last three years.
Mostly taken with the ubiquitous Lomo LCA or my Kyocera fine pix s3l digital camera. Some have been cropped, some have been photoshoped, some haven’t been touched.

it's a process called 'stitching' where you take on flick then
the camera shows you the edge of that flick and you line up
the next photo. Then the software puts all those images in order
and cleans up the seams. I shouldn't have tilted down because
it threw my entire arch off kilter.

My friend has that camera and it has survived everything! I on the other hand have a FinePix 40i and the internal power controller thingy just keeps dying. I know two other people witht he same and it keeps happening to their's too. Supose the moral of the story is don't buy a 40i. It is a pity, as they are a small handy camera.

i dont do anything worth posting.
ese's modeling shots: the first one is lit well and the skin tones are looking good especially around the lower arm/hand area. the second one is really lit hard from the left making the whole upper portion of the face hot. this could all be due to the scanner not picking up all of the tones that were in the slides. if thats the case, disregard everything i said as idiocy. personally, i dont like the model. she doesnt seem very "into it" or whatever. the look on her face in the first one is a stare...which i usually dig, but its too "blank" on her there. it almost gives it too much of a snapshot feel. and the second one is eerie because of the way her head is posistioned, which i actually like quite a bit. but the lighting is throwing me off a bit (still, could be the tones not showing up...) also, how high are the ceilings in the studio you were using? because it looks like you caught the ceiling but im not sure...
the white backround is a good idea too, but did you try using an avedon-style lighting on any other shots to get rid of the shadows in the backround? just curious.

the lighting was rather hard. just one hotlight with a cheap softbox. I was really unintrested and rushed through sets with both models (hence the background being exposed) so the large line behind me could keep moving. I think things would have worked a little better had we been given some guidance as to what to shoot. We're not advertising a line of clothes...its not headshots for 8x10s....its just to learn lighting. yet we were given no options of what lighitng to use or where to put it. other students expressed the same kind of feelings, so I know I'm not alone. but I'm happy with the results.
the shadow detail and tone is a little better on the slides, but overall its still very hard.
I'll see what I can do about getting some kind of scans of the other model on here. I got a couple where she's looking a little more happy to be there than this girl. warm smile, slight better lighting.
Before this class I was feeling like I'd be bored to tears and not give the slides a second look. held no intrest to me. now I wish I had put some work into it...caught my intrest somehow. Considering most of my shots are completely devoid of people, who'd think I'd suddenly be intrested in shooting models?
thanks for the concise feedback tyler...

thanks austin.
Now that I'm Bobby Digital, you know I'll be allover this thread.
I shot a bunch of flowers and garden shots this weekend, but I'm
not sure if that will have the same effect as the 'desolate industry' look.

kilo...you and me both man. Soon as my new digi shows up...I'm gonna be a shooting fool. I'm working on getting some girls to let me do nudes. I think the digital will put this on lock.
Love the industrial look...but I can handle warm and fuzzy. Fuck it man...postem up.

ese: yeah, i hate shooting models typically. unless i really have a solid idea of a shot that NEEDS the model for composition/design purposes. but usually i dont include people in my work. i also know the bullshit of having to hurry up so the line of students behind you can do work.
[img]http://images.amazon.com/images/P/2880466520.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg'>
i STRONGLY suggest that anyone who shoots portraits or shots of people in general get this book. it was my textbook for some class and it has alot of really nice shots and then goes into detail about how they were created including pretty simple diagrams of lighting setups. for 17 bucks its well worth it.
ill scan some of the diagrams in later or something.

Did I mention that the hippy girl is currently in some Castle in France
doing a bunch of nudes? Some project where 8 shooters and 8 models
all stay in this castle for a week and take a heap of flicks. Then she's
sticking around for an extra few weeks to go rock climbing. (yeah... hippy)
I can wait to see the postcards!

^ that second flick is incredible!
It could use a little colour correction on the water though.
It just looks like colour banding in sections.
flixster
06-09-2003, 09:31 PM
no need for color corrections.. it was a cloudy day.... the sun was hitting only a portion of the water so it looks that way... the dark parts are theshadows of the buildings....
--zeSto--
06-09-2003, 09:50 PM
yeah... The water probably has patches of different colors too.
I just noticed down by the website tag at the bottom right,
there's a very defined line where the water changes tone.
That's the spot that stood out when I made my above comment.

11 pictures in this one. the first one i tried, you can see the obvious stitch job in the center, i could probably go back and fix that if i wanted.
what i find works well, is if when your stitching them together, you view the stitch points and when you double click the green stitch field, you can select and line up key landmarks in both pictures and then the program will stitch them together much nicer.
[img]http://pic6.picturetrail.com/VOL146/1152779/2177252/27067812.jpg'>
this ones a bit better, you cant see the obvious frames at least. i think theres 6 or 7 pictures in this one.
[img]http://pic6.picturetrail.com/VOL146/1152779/2177252/27067768.jpg'>
one thing you want to remember is to make sure all your shots stay sharp, its really hard to tell on the puny screen on the camera, but you can always check it out if you go to review. i havnt tried anything 360 yet.
my apologies to all the real photographers, i hate to waste your space like this.
some random pictures ive taken around:
