I'm doing some freelancing for a weekly now... it's weird. I don't know your location but I think the big city weeklies are bound to be better than this little one. It's alright I guess, as long as you don't mind assignments (that might not always be interesting: like election coverage). Free supplies though, that's totally worth it.

yea the assignments have been sort of dull. morstly profiles and speaker ones. but the speakers have been awesome so far. last one was for rober fisk, an amazing very well known war journalist. so i do get to see some great events that i never even knew took place previously.

Haha, no.
She's just a cool friend from my college days.
I gave her one of my new AA hats. Apparently her friend stole her other one.
She happened to be in D.C. for a couple weeks and I hadn't seen her in two years. A good time was had.

Please tell me what you think of the photograph's attached below:
Any feedback would be good, either positive or negative... (preferably positive)...
In this series of photograph's I have used a long exposure period time set on B setting .. I have only used the natural available light present in the subject and havnt used any flash to enhance the image.. The use of a tripod also helps a bit ...
Enjoy people!

A) I suggest you post these in the Photography Thread, where they should be.
You'd get more views and replies.
B) They are okay.
I think they are lacking more light.
Use a tripod more. Some of them look as though they were hand held.
Try using a flash gun rather than some flashlights, if you have access to one.
Also, try lighting more than one corner.
Set the Bulb, walk around, light shit up. Just be sure not to put yourself between the light source and camera or your silloutte will be in the way.

Thankyou for the wonderful comments RAGE... but to get to the point if you look closely where the subject matter was taken you might realize how difficult it is to take shots there. Firstly it is completly dark -NO LIGHT WHAT SO EVER- SECONDLY - if you noticed the reason why you can see something in every photo is because there is a torch providing a partial amount of light to brighten up the Lime Stone walls, I knwo you Yanks no really nothing about the "Underground" but maybe if you try and take photo's of the subject matter what you see , maybe have a go at it...GOOD LUCK...
With the use of a flash gun I am not going to use one , ie: risk of damage -location-.... I used a tripod in every photograph you are seeing mate, the reason why it looks hand held is because my subject deliberatly moved to create a blur effect and set on a quick exposure time... thats the reason why ...
Otherwise, Australia is about 38c and I need a BEER!!!
thecarwreck
11-25-2005, 03:15 PM
I'd agree with rage here... they are OK. It's all well and good to shoot long exposures, but it almost feels like you're relying on that fact alone to make these "good" photos. While all the ingredients for an interesting shot are there--lighting, subject, exposure--it's not captured as well as it could be. Straight on shots down tunnels aren't interesting 99% of the time no matter how long your exposure is.
And don't jump to any conclusions about our knowledge of drains (and other "forbidden" areas)... there's a sufficiently large contingent of urban explorers/photographers in the U.S. who turn out some consistently sick images. Of course we all envy the Aus. drains.... lucky bastards  .

forgive the nerdosity, but the thing with photographing graffiti and posting it for people who study/do graffiti is unless
you're a total champ with composition and have a primo eye, the photo can sometimes be basically
relegated to whatever the quality of the graff is, since we all instinctively and automatically
look right at the graffiti in the shot..not a diss or anything..i'm just sayin'..

Ok, I know there's graff in these shots. But it's not like writer's graff, you know? And I just thought a tiny percentage of you might recall the top photo posted here back in July, taken in February. And I also just thought a tiny percentage of you might enjoy the second shot taken just a couple days ago, for comparison's sake. That's what I thought anyway... :innocent:

word up burlap.. i get it. there are ways to shoot graffiti that remove the 'look at this neato graffiti' aspect from the image... hell, i've posted images like that myself. but a straight shot of some piece is pretty much boring.

the basic jist is if graffiti is the focal point...don't post it.
just because there is a little bit of graffiti in an otherwise kick ass composition...that is fine...post up.
White Ox...your bridge shot with the shadows of the beems on the concrete pillars falls into the latter category.

It's time to purchase a D-SLR.
Any reccomendations?
So far, the front runner seems to be the D50 (Nikon), I've read nothing but good reviews for it thus far, although I am considering a 20D (Canon). Both seem to have alot of good reviews, but the 20D has 8.2 MP compared to the 6.1 of the D50. I also believe I remember reading some stuff about Canons raw-file system stuff being annoying? I do plan on shooting alot with it, and in very low light conditions on the whole.
Has anyone done any printing with the D50? They claim that you get very good print results up to 11x14, and I really cant see myself going much larger than that.

the d50 is nice, but drop the $200 more and get the d70 or the new d70s. i've printed 20x42 from the latter and it was pretty damn clear (at 300 dpi). anything up to the 11x14 is crystal though, and you can tweak for stuff larger.
that said, i'm partial to nikons since getting a d70. i fucking love it, period. it's easy to learn too if you're all analog up to this point. i've read that the canon is a bit more diffivult in this regard, but it's really up to you. go to a shop and hold both, see which FEELS right for you. they're all sick cameras so you really can't lose.

I've read that the d50 and d70 are very comparable with the exception of perhaps 4-5 custom features, If I can save a little bit on the body and devote it into better lenses that would be ideal.
One of the downsides to the Nikons is that I've been told that theres no vertical grip/batt. packs available, which is definetly something I would like to invest in for any camera I own.
I've been shooting a Canon SLR for about 5 years now and enjoy it quite a bit.
I'll definetly be hitting up B+H to test out both before purchasing though.
Thanks everyone.

Yes they still make film for it.
It's peel apart film.
Color = 669, 689 & 690
B&W = 664 & 667
You can find this film at most local photo stores.
They don't carry it at places like Wal-Mart or grocery stores.

Crack open a phone book, look for Photographic Supplies, find what's closest to you, give them a buzz.
Ask if they carry Polaroid Pack Film (i.e. 669, 664, 690)
If no luck in your area, you might just have to buy some online.

lots and lots of really great stuff here. inspirational for sure.
before i get some photos up, ive got a few questions.
how do you film guys (35mm) transfer your stuff into the digital realm?
ive got a pretty cheap scanner, but it does have a film attachment that will let you scan film. am i better off scanning the film, or just getting the film developed down at cvs and having them put it on a cd? (the people at my local cvs are clueless and only charge me a couple bucks to have like 4 rolls developed and put on a cd).
at the current moment, i unfortunately do not have access to a darkroom. what do you guys do in this situation? i know some places, like best buy, are pretty shitty when it come to color correctness and what not? and tips on where to get my film developed?
thanks in advance, and sorry for the lack of photos, but ill get some up soon.

I recently went to a whole gallery full of stuff like this.
The photographer was obsessed with this division of sky and sea/land.
I more liked his early work which looked like these really smooth gradients over entire expanses of about 30 inches.

That's all in-camera magic, no photoshop. Well, the sky was pretty blue but the D70 has variable color saturation settings that can get bumped up (the equivalent of shooting crazy saturated film like Velvia or Kodak UC). I was/am a huge fan of really vibrant film so I figure running these settings is the closest I'll get to shooting Kodachrome in digital.... for now.
Just for a little comparison, this is Kodachrome's green:

But seriously, I need some way to develop my rolls, and I would really prefer to do it myself. It just seems right.

this shot bugged me out for a second, It took me like 10 seconds to figure out what it was. First reaction was that it was an old shot of a ship (the telephone pole & wires) sinking next to a large iceberg (the head) and the water was the reflection off the car.....ha , ha, that tripped me out...

^^is size an issue?
I mean do you wany it to be compact so that you can carry it pretty much anywhere with you? Your basic compact point and shoot type camera
Or are you looking for something that's a little larger and more professional grade as far as lens and optical zoom and manual focusing and such are concerned?

Yeah, this happened to me with my entire first photography project.
So I had to go REshoot everything that i had done. Thankfully it was all pictures of stationary objects and the lighting conditions were almost the same.
Good thing it didn't happen later though, because my best pic was of a building that they have since knocked over.

EDIT: ese , i hope you dont mind me using this as an example.

Here's the other raspberry shot. Its looking a little dark on screen. Messed up and had the background more in focus than the raspberries. Learning curve on the medium format. Also tried trimming the border off on it.

<s>No idea.
I use it a few times a month and this time the shutter wouldn't stay open (I was trying to use the bulb effect).
This is the camera that I modified from the dead 4.5v battery to accomidate a 9v. So naturally, I thought the 9v I had in there was dead.
Bought some new 9v's, threw it in.. nope. Still not working.
So, I'm stumped.</s>
Umm.. ok. Just tried it again and now it works.
Maybe it was a loose pos/neg connector.

it doesnt even have to be anything special , any picture is better than none..
shit, you could even post other peoples pictures as long as you give the right credit.. just to make the thread more interesting..

how did you get the different colored pictures like that...i tried a method of my own that worked well kinda like that but using clear packaging tape over the lens and coloring it the color of choice with sharpie....but the images arent as clear...and what kind of polaroid camera is that on your tripod....
-Rage-
12-23-2005, 05:30 PM
See the picture above the famed colors?
That's what I use.
Buy any color posterboard hang it from a clip on a wall.
Point a few lights in it's direction, but be careful not to cast a shadow of yourself, tripod or camera.
Then snap away.
Take notice though, if you're trying this with Polaroids, be prepared to use A LOT of film, just to get the colors the way you want.
I spent 70+ exposures and I have only 30 or so that are presentable.
http://www.angryalan.com/photohost/lj/12-22-05-1a.jpg
*also note: colors like grey and brown are almost impossible to capture with Polaoird film. Grey usually seems to come out almost purplish and brown almost always has a red tone to it.
It sucks.
The camera is a Polaroid Sun AutoFocus 660.
