Very nice, man. Perfect exposure, great soft water effect. What do you guys use for post processing? Photoshop mostly? Is that what you use for the frames too?
Thanks. I played around with this in photoshop, just touching it up on colour enhancements and what not. And yeah, you get the border from adjusting the canvas size in PS
oh, and internerd, how do you like the d50? I was thinking about getting one if i ever get a dslr.
D50 is awesome so far. Great starting camera for people looking into getting their first dslr
Very easy to use and you adjust to it quite quick.

I haven't had a problem with Photobucket so far. This image is just as uploaded it as 341x500 pixels. It is 72 DPI though, I see you are using 300DPI. Save a copy of the original and convert it to 72-100DPI which is pretty good for just showing on the web. The light looks good, Is it cropped? if so how much. i would like to see a closer shot to see the detail on the rocks if you are willing to try using the 72DPI should give you a nice size image.
I don't want to sound like a complete retard, but I don't understand what you mean by DPI
It's not cropped. And I have to say that this size it kinda doesnt give the photo justice.
Thanks for the feed back too.

Dots Per Inch can be changed - If you are using photoshop goto Image | Image Size.
Basically what this will accomplish is make the filesize smaller so Photobucket doesn't resize it.
What is the dimensions of the original.?
PM if you want.

Well, I'm going to try and ditch the 8700 asap for a DSLR.
Thankfully, I can still use my new 4GB CompactFlash card in a Nikon DSLR.
Maybe go with the d50--that's what it's looking like I will do. I've heard good things and its cheap.

Word to that. The D50 is probably the best "advanced amateur" camera out right now. Plus Nikon's optics are the best you'll get without dropping at least $1500. User friendly and a breeze to learn, too. Plus you can get them on the cheap from a lot of online spots... under $600 in some cases.

Thank carwreck and Issac for the tips.
I actually just got a $1,000 check from my grandmother as a congrats for getting into college (again) towards a new camera.
So, if I sell my 8700, I'm more than certain I can get a top of the line model.
Or something a little lower with more lenses, etc.
And yes, a 4GB card.
I almost invested in an 8GB card until I found out that they are not compatible with the 8700.
The Sandisk 4G CF Ultra II only cost me $189.

How many photos can a dslr hold with something like 1gb? If I am to buy a dslr, I am not going to have extra money laying around, so I'd probably have to go with something smaller than 4gb, but I want a decent amount.

you need to use the static address. click on your photo in flickr, and hit the "all sizes" button. at the bottom of the all sizes page there's a "Grab the URL" box. Copy, paste.
or you can just right-click (or command-click for mac) on your image and open it in a new window that'll have the static URL.
and then go HERE (http://www.flickr.com/groups/12oz/) and get down.

I'm new here.. working with a semi decent 5MP camera and an external flash thats not compaitble with my camera.. thus its a trade off.. gotta use a slow shutter speed so I can manually trigger the flash in time (usually 1/6th of a second or slower) and have to guess a good apeture in relation to how far I hold the flash from the subject.. aka.. ghetto as hell way to take pics

i always try to adjust my layers unless its a film picture, then i only use photoshop to get it off the scan bed - super quick and easy to crop it up all nice and stuff
whats really messed up is in my photo 1 class at school they start everyone out thinking that photoshop is part of photography, like its just what your supposed to do with pictures.. when that isnt the case at all

I own a d200, it's a good camera. I never use the video option on point and shoots anyway.
I'm a huge advocate of photoshop. The still images on magazines and billboards that were shot with digital systems (more and more now, with the introduction of digital backs for medium format) have had many hours of editing each. Before Photoshop, people did the same thing in a darkroom- it's just simpler to do so now. Come on, editing is very much so a large part of photography.
"I eagerly await new concepts and processes. I believe that the electronic image will be the next major advance. Such systems will have their own inherent and inescapable structural characteristics, and the artist and functional practitioner will again strive to comprehend and control them." - Ansel Adams,

some things about film are just so much better and i feel like i missed out on all of it, like the only thing i learned about solarization in school was how to do it in photoshop, when i found out what it really was, i was just like wowwww , the technique became much more interesting, as well as a lot of other things.. i had much more respect for those aspects of photography..
plus i think cross processing is probly the funnest part of photography ive came across yet, other then having to wait to pick up your prints

dslr's can record movies due to the fact that they have a mirror and shutter type system like a 35mm. so you cant really record a movie with the mirror in the way of the image sensor.

Rage, I know I'm a little late, but congrats on RIT. I got accepted there as an undergrad, but decided at the last minute that I didn't want to live in Rochester. The photography program is really good there. It was the late 90's when I was gonna go, and they already had a lot of state of the art digital equiptment... way before other schools I looked at even had any digital stuff at all.
It's a pretty cool city, too. I still visit now and then.

Small businesses with new websites or websites in general want product photographers. Build a portfolio and start doing it. Get a white background though, and make sure you can't see the ripples in the cloth, if you are using cloth as your background.

I have been meaning to get a peice of fabric that does not wrinkle so easily either... I most likely would just get a black and a white.
I think if i put some type of board under the item it would eliminate the ripples created by the camera sinking down.
Thanks for the advice.

I don't normally do setup shots such as that one, so the advice/suggestions help. The weather is making it tough to get outside... but maybe that is a good thing to try something different.
Where are you getting your prints done? You should check out MPIX.com. They are fast and high quality.

I'm going to try and do a few Panorama's and I'm trying to figure out how to do it on photoshop.
I searched cyberspace and it tells me how to align photo's manually using photoshop which looks easy enough. However, does anyone know if there is any stiching tools on photoshop? I know there is a photomerge option somewhere in photoshop...anyone? I know Rage has got some answers......
Thanks

^^^ i think pffft said there's some stitching stuff included (or free plugins available) in the later PS editions... CS2 maybe. I'm curious to know myself...

almost all of them have photo merge, even older versions..
file>automate>photomerge
although manually might actually work better for you, check it out anyway

How many of you shoot alone? Personally I don't really enjoy much of anything if I'm not doing it with a close friend. If I had someone who was as interested in photography as I am, though, I would shoot every day.

there are some really good shots on this page.. philth, cacash refund, artifacts are the stand outs..
i like shoting alone as well because i dont have to worry about anyone else and im on my own path and time frame. but i do shot alot with a good friend.
shooting with philth was cool until we got harrassed but some african guy running a pay car lot.
depending on the person you are shooting with can make the dif. in my time. sometimes im more inspired, or feel more ballsy about taking shots of strangers.
here are a few from a few weeks ago..

i saw that sony-r1 at the stores... it says it was 10.3 megapixels. that's a lot. i was talking to one of the guys at the camera store, and he said something about how more megapixels wasn't always better. i thought more megapixels meant the picture would be more crisp, sharp and less fuzzy since they're fitting more smaller "squares" in the same amount of space... but he said something about how more megapixels cause there to be less color or something, and 6 megapixels is usually recommended... anyone else heard something like this?
Pfffffffffft
05-22-2006, 02:34 AM
it sounds right because ive run negitives through a hi-res scanner (15 megapixel) the picture was very very crisp but i did notice color was not the same..one advantage is that you can resize images at weird dimentions with out having negitive effects

I don't want to hate but I'm really sick of night photography. Anyone can grab a tripod and shoot some zaney looking light. Composition-wise that last one doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. I think we all know what night lights look like depending on how they are photographed. Its interesting the first few times, but then if you keep shotting the same moving car headlights with long exposure, your not doing anything new. Or if you point a slow shutter at a lampost and wave the camera around. Sorry to have a sook

Don't feel bad..I was thinking the exact same thing but I wasn't going to say anything. The long exposure highway/road shots are so played out. We all know what long exposure can do. I don't want to be an ass cause I'm no good but seriously, lets see something new, or at least an attempt at something that hasn't been done 1,000 times.

I guess people weren't able to understand what we were saying. We weren't saying that night photography is bad, only that lots of photos that people are doing are simply cars on the highway with long exposure to make streaks of light or just pictures of lights with the star effect that a long exposure gives. Nothing else about the photo is interesting, its just that effect over and over. So people, stop responding to the idea of dissing "night photos." It's the style of photos that we were talking about.
