i've got a problem, it seems that the apature(sp?) on my lens doesn't work anymore. i have no idea what caused this and i know it's not the lens because ive tried 2 different ones and theirs don't work either, the light meter just stays where it is. it doesnt seem to be the light meter either, since it still works but it's just not affected by the apature. if anyone knows what the deal is then let me know

Cremaster 3? I saw that movie two nights ago, and not having seen any of the others had no idea what to expect. After seeing the movie and being asked if it was good, i didn't overly know what to say. It was good for the most part, but there were a few parts that it just went for too long, and it was definitely the most confusing three hours of my life in a long long time.

Minolta Maxxum 5 35mm. i might be getting this, want to ask you PROS if its quality.
id be getting it with a Minolta 70-210mmF/ 4.5-5.6 II Silver Zoom Lens

unfortunetly, i can't offer you any advice on the camera, since i don't have any experience with minolta, but i do believe rage has a minolta. I will make a suggestion though, and say you might want to get a lens that also can get a bit closer. 70mm as your shortest range is starting out decently long, and i personally know i like to shoot close up shots a lot, but i guess thats a lot of personal preference. Sorry i can't overly help you.

C+A+D
The Minolta is fine. I don't know what you want to use it for, but just the camera and the lens it comes with (20-80mm) is suffice. You can always try it out first with a couple rolls of color and a couple of black and white. Then get yourself the zoom lens.
It's very small and light, so that's a plus. No fumbling with a heavy ass camera. It also has all the options of an older class Minolta and lots of new fancypants options.
Only suggestion... Don't buy from Amazon. You can get one AND the lens for much cheaper.

jbrsh... first off, sweet sweet photos you keep posting.
The fisheye's are superb.
Anyways, as for the said photo... here's what I did to get that shot.
- I was in the theater I work at after closing and I was getting shots of the outside marquee (they came out shitty). When I was about to lock up I had turned off all the lights and I thought one of the theater auditoriums itself would be a cool setup.
I was armed with:
- my new x700 Minolta
- a light pen (key factor in creating that photo)
- a tripod
- a cable release
How it worked:
- I set up the tripod and camera facing the exit door, obviously.
- My f-stop was open wide at f16.
- I then set my shutter speed to Bulb and added my cable release.
- When I was ready to go I got my light-pen ready in hand, opened the shutter and held it open with the cable release.
- I hurried to highlight the door outline, making sure the light was aimed toward the camera.
- When I was done I walked back and released the shutter.
No more than 30 seconds exposure most likely.
Notice the ambient light from the door window via the outter lobby. Cool shit.
Hope that helps.

ive been reading a lot of photography books, especially thoes of certin photographers work, cartier-bresson, tress etc. i read an article from cartier-bresson talking about how he dosent even consider photography an artisticly relavent medium and how he just does a lot of sketching now. being one of the more influential "artists" to me, Ive been forced to contimplate this opinion of his. not photography being accepted with painters and sculptures and the rest of the accepted 'art world' but it as a medium to actually convey feeling. i look at a lot of the stuff on this post and some i really like but a portion of it seems to be the same things i see happening in modern photography, just copied ideas on a different setting. well, i'd like to see other peoples opinions on all this shit i just discussed with myself, if anyone finds time to read it...

a few of my thoughts on this statement: The reason you see the same stuff on here as in modern photographyis because a lot of the subjects look good. Yes, you can look anywhere and see long exposures of cars, or photos of abandoned buildings, but they're fun and interesting subjects to take pictures of. I can look at any long exposure of cars or any abadoned house shot, and if it is good, no matter mow many times i've seen similiar photos, i still enjoy looking at them, and personally enjoy taking them. I just take photos of things i find interesting, and if other people think the same things are interesting and are taking photos of them, so be it. For me, photography is something that i think is fun, and as long as i'm getting pleasure out of taking my photos, i could care less who else has done similiar types of photos. Just some thoughts...

firsttake, you have to understand several things, it has always been that way. There are only so many topics that you can take pictures of...
Also anyone and everyone owns a digital camera and with the internet anyone can post an image... so you see a lot of amateur photographers, photos.. don't judge them so harsh. most are teenagers or in their early 20's.. Most don't have the eye for photography so the images seem to be very similar..
Take me for instance.. I've been taking pictures for 20 years.. I've always had a good eye, but my vision has taken off in the last few years. I feel my pictures are more creative.....I started taking panoramic shots (that way the person lookig at my shots can get a better feel of what I saw), and I've also been traveling a bit more... so a person like me can get a variety of shots..
Mind you I've never looked at the credits when I looked at photography books... Forget about what so and so says about photography... You do you and shoot what catches your eye... It's your vision.. there is no right or wrong....

i defitnally agree with the fact that many of these pictures look good and that they are intresting. i believe that a picture is to convey certin emotions and occurence in a fixed period of time, even if it is a prolonged exposure..heh... anyways, i'm not questioning the validity of any of the work, i'm just saying that a lot of the things ive been seeing seem repetitive and that the same goes for the majority of photography for the last few years. i'm sure if i looked harder i'd find tons of experimental and new ideas, but it seems i'm just subjected to look at majorly what someone says is good now. just thoughts, i'm by no means trying to single out or insult anyone. through the posts ive looked at i really like a good amount of the work. keep posting.

the sounds like the very beginnings of photography as an artistic medium all over again. Alfred Stieglitz helped pioneer photography into an accepted "art form".

in relation to the cartier-besson stuff, atget took what was mostly a utilitarian approach to his work. he had thousands of shots all carefully kept which he sold to artists as referance points for sketching/paintings. i remember seeing some examples a while back of where his photos can be found in some fairly famous paintings. one can look at his work and find artistic elements of composition and such. personally i tend to lean more towards the design of the photo/image rather than any emotional response which i feel should be secondary and on a solid base. i dont know. enough ranting.

Crazee b0b and I have been e-mailing back and forth and he sent me this idea today:
COPYRIGHT 2003 Crazee b0b
I have an idea for a little photography project invloving basically all those people. What I had in mind is getting a disposble camera and getting as many creative/talented people (writers or not) to take one photo each with the camera and then they pass it on to the next person on the list. Then when finished the results are stuck up on a website and everyone gets to see what each other have done. You like the sound of that?
Brilliant.
Fuck a 12oz Journal Project.

jbrsh, thanks...the plant one looks a lot better in person since my scanner really toned down the green. Its supposed to be a lot brighter.
about the disposable idea...it sounds quite interesting. I do hate disposable cameras and all, but it would still be a lot of fun. If we plan to start this, it should start at rage, since i have some shit to send to him very soon, and you have that hat to send me. So start at you, go to me, then crazee bob since i'm sending some photos to him. Also, depending on how many people are in on this, it might work with each person taking two...i'm not sure how many photographers we have on here in all.

I don't understand this "pushing" I'm just assuming by that when you say t-max 100 pushed to 400 you are putting in a roll of 100 speed film and setting the camera at 400?
Please explain I'm intrigued.
Ski Mask
07-09-2003, 04:46 AM
Yep. tmax100 goes in, iso set manually to 400. all the photos are metered as if it was 400 and it gets dropped off at the lab without telling them its pushed. and voila. super contrasty photos.
-Rage-
07-09-2003, 04:47 AM
I can start it off. But I must end with it too. I'll develop.
If I start we can have a SET box to ship in. I can make it a good one. As long as people are careful to open and can repackage it, there should be no problem.
There should be a way of special shipping that has it x-rayed, but in a safer way.
MisP... where'd you come from? You disappeared for a while.
MrChupacabra
07-09-2003, 04:52 AM
well, its worth a try, worst comes to worst we lose a few bucks in shipping costs. We should start a list of everyone whose going to be getting this camera so we can figure out how many photos each person gets.
Rage, i'll be getting your and bob's shots tomorrow...hopefully they turned out being developed off the cd and are of high enough quality and not all pixelated or anything...we'll see.
Crazee bob, i no longer have your email address, so if you wanna drop me an email with the address i'll be sending the pictures for you to that would be great.

ok I've been off 12oz for a while, but now I'm back.
First off: some AMAZING photos have been posted in my absence.
Second off: I have a Kodak disposable flash camera sat here right now and will find a suitable box and post it this week to the first person on the list. If we get a full hand count of who is on the list, we can work out how many photos each. It has 27 photos on it, so if all the regular posters of this thread joined in, it would be roughly 2 photos each (guesstimate). If it gets lost/broken/whatever, oh well better to have tried and failed then not tried at all. Infact I have 4 disposables sat here, so I'll just start it off again. It is more a question of how we go about it. Do we produce one big list with all the names addresses on it that travles with the camera? Or does one (or two) people have a list and when you recieve you email to request the address of the next person? Where possible it would be nice to keep screen names and real names seperate, and I'd prefer the option of emailing for the next address and would be more than happy to organise this.
Thoughts please.
Also hand count of people willing to take a photo and pay a few dollars in postage. I have one person from 12oz who doesn't post here down, me and Rage. Email me or Rage or both of us for further thoughts.
The results will be posted here and stuck up on a lil website somewhere so we can all see what we did.

My thoughts:
- No disposible. They are poo.
- I have a 35mm plastic "toy" camera that takes interesting shots. See below.
- My 35mm has cheap-o f-stop settings such as: Cloudy, Partly Cloudy, Some Sun, and Sunny. A.K.A. 6, 8, 11, 16. Very cool.
- Should we use color or B&W?
- Should we vote on film stock and speed too? Kodak, Fuji..?
Feedback.
P.S. This camera cost me .99 cents. Who cares if it gets lost or damaged.

i've become pretty disenchanted with photography lately... i know this is gonna be a thunderstorm in the middle of everyones parade, but whatever...
photography is a joke. everyone and their mother is a photographer. its so fucking easy to shoot a 'good' picture, its pathetic. start with either a very blurry, or very crisp photo, over sturate it, crop it, throw on a border and 'voila' you've got a good photo. its gay as shit. it's a formula that is fool proof. i could walk around the room im in right now, with the camera in my bag, and shoot 20 pictures that would all be 'dope', and i could do it nearly in my sleep. infact, i could hand the camera to an 8 year old with one are, tell him what to shoot and it'd be damn near the same thing. it's all tricks and gimmicks. its geometry. its chopping things into thirds, and playing with a-symetrical balance. its 8/10th's of electric blue, interspersed with billowy white clouds, and a slightly cock eyed strip of richly colored brick, filling out the last 2/10th's and framing the left side. its a joke. and dont even get me started on fish eye lenses....christ, you could shoot a cigarette butt in a mud puddle and make it look high-brow with the simple mouse click combo of 'edit>image>curves'.
now understand, im not slamming anyone in here, i first began thinking all of these things by looking at my own photos. i would shoot a bunch of stuff, scan through them real fast, find the obvious 'winners' do my standard 'edits' and BOOM. admittidly, they would look 'good', but good isnt enough. good is fucking gay. it's so blindingly easy to make 'good' photos, when really all they are is in focus and pushed 3 f-stops. this isnt to say there arent some exceptional photos in here, there are, but as a whole, its becoming so much harder to impress me, and to feel like what im doing is worth my, and the worlds time.
i dont know, maybe im wrong. maybe there are a few of us here that just have the 'eye' for it or something, and my concept of 'easy' is actually just natural ability. i dont know. i just know that i'm lost and frustrated and not content with how i feel about my own stuff. i feel no sense of achievement when i take a good photo, i just think 'oh look, how esy that was'. the only thing stnding between any of us, and mass recognition, is some 64x80 prints and a degree from cooper union. i'd say photography wasn't even art, except i feel the same fucking way about art in general. do something sloppy once, and its bad, do it sloppy 1200 times, and its art.
thats gay.
rafeal was art...not...
blah. sorry, i just had to get that out.

^ the exact same thing can be said about grafitti.
Ant 8 year old can do it, but the trained eye sees the difference
between what's good and what's simply following the formula.
Once your eyes are trained a bit of the magic is lost. You cant
be fooled into thinking an average photo is good when you know
the mistakes. Same thing about graf.

I'm not going to disagree.
It just seems that as you understand more about photography, writing
or any other 'art' you have to be a little more discerning in your tastes.
For example... News did a piece in my city years ago with crap paint
and stock caps. The untrained eye would say 'that's sloppy looking'
but the trained eye would say 'wow! what style!'. Strip away the photoshop
and just try to see though to the raw content. That's where you'll find the difference
between average and good.
I've been a firm believer that a good photo should be in a collection of
similar photos to be great. If you can shorot 30 things in the same style
and end up with similar results that fit as a cohesive unit, then you are
a good photographer. The rest might just be luck. Some photos are waiting
to be taken. Some are crafted by the photographer.

see, i would say the exact opposit.
if you can come up with 30 photos, that are all good for different reasons, then you're a dope photographer. 30 photos that are similar are just 30 variations of the same thing.
i realize that a more 'trained' eye will be more discerning, and there is definitely an ability to take 'next level' photos, maybe what im so frustrated at, is my inability to get there. but see, even if i was to 'figure it out', it would be just that, a riddle, not art.
i could write a book on how to take 'dope' photos, that would be good enough to get you through most levels of any art school photography corriculum. its all shadows, or angles, or colors...its textbook. maybe im just mad because i was expecting something else, and im unhappy with my glimpse behind oz...hell, mybe im just completely fucking wrong... i just know coming across all of this has left me incredibly unmotivated and frustrated.

damn seeking... you looked behind the curtain? We told you not to go there.
I think you're just hitting the frustrated phase know as a 'plateau'.
Maybe you and fun subject matter instead of dealing with the
'thirds' and shot composition. I will once again take it back to the graffiti
comparison just because this is one of the few places where that works.
Look at joker. Look at the stuff he used to do. Look at what he does now.
He clearly got the outline>fill>outline>highlight concept down, and now
he's pushed way beyond that. Maybe you need to step back and forget
about all the textbook photograph techniques and let yourself make
some interesting mistakes and try to develop those directions.
and why'd you look behind the curtain?

I've gone through the exact same thing Seeking. I'm gonna have to agree with Kilo and say its a plateau. There is a formula for everything and you're right in saying that its easy (when you have the talent or eye). I think art minded people in general have that eye. Talk to some of your friends that don't have a spec of it in their blood and perhaps you'll hear something refreshing. I agree that you could "teach" these people how to do it as well....and I'm sure the majority would be able to take some nice pics. Maybe that's just good teaching? I also think that I could do the same thing with photoshop in regards to blah photos. Of course, knowing me...I can attribute that to my cockiness in being proficient in PS. So anyway...back to the plateau comment. There are certain images that are in style now...and there are biters in photography as well. This is the one thing that changes the style and direction of things. This is why painters quit painting religous scenes and rubenesque women. This is also why in a few years time...we'll probably be laughing at our high contrast, gritty, no tonal value having photos. The end result of this thought is to challenge yourself to do something better that doesn't incorporate all those things. Some of those techniques should probably always be observed...(rule of thirds) and some are just styles.
Pilau Hands
07-09-2003, 10:33 PM
I've thought about it myself from time to time...so here mine is for what it's worth...
To me, a lot of photo is about documentation. That photo of ese's is great, but why? It's a big ball of light, some smoke, a building with interesting shadows...what's so special about it. That's what I love about photography sometimes. It's not so much about you, as it is about being there, wherever you are, and that exact point in time. Walking down the street everyday there are millions of things you could shoot that would be beautiful. But a photo is what you make a personal choice to look at harder than everything else for a second. It stands out to you for whatever reason, and maybe there isn't a whole lot that goes into that, cropping, contrast, whatever. What I'm interested in is that personal choice. A picture of a wrinkly old man may be fantastic on its own, but you're still reading into it. You're looking at it and for a split second you imagine what he's seen, where he's been. I was mulling it over when it comes to International photography. I've seen photo books of children from Tibet, locals near Angkor Wat, Bushmen in Africa, and as a westerner, I loved them and thought they were fantastic...which they were. Great colors when it applied, great contrasts in b/w ... but visually, it's foreign. We don't see it everyday therefore it's special. I thought, how many times have I seen a photo I loved and loved it only because of the subject matter not the actual print or physical effort it took to produce that work. You could take a disposable to Costa Rica and Americans would eat it up. It's a bias we have I just have to deal with.
It is in a sense really easy to make a great photo. It's all mathematics and formula. Have depth, contrast, etc etc. So I've realized the same thing you have...except in the end i still love it. In our visual culture, i like capturing seconds and putting them down on paper. Maybe instead of concentrating on how easy it is to shoot a thousand things that the art world would like, just concentrate on one. What is photography to you, why do you take pictures at all? Just take one shot, and think about why you're choosing that one instead of an infinite number of others.
seeking
07-09-2003, 10:36 PM
i was looking forward to your comments.
i agree with you, and also kilo, but i also dont think its quite that simple. its not just a plateau that i'm at, its one that photography (and art as a whole) seems to be at. its like graphic design. there are 15 trillion good designers, and 11 great ones. its so rare that i see a photo and go 'oh shit, that's ill'... they all just seem so...contrived. im sure alot of that is what i'm putting on it, but i can see it very clearly none the less. i also know if i can find a way to push myself, and to look at things from a completely different perspective, and take pictures of new things, i would begin to enjoy it again, im just having difficulties finding that. in graffiti, there have always been people that i could draw inspiration from. not necesrily style, but people like joker, or revok, or ecb, or whoever, that were constantly breaking new ground, and proving that it could be done. photography doesnt have that luxury....not only is it much older and thus has seen most of its major reniscenses, but its also bound by the physical characteristics of our world....
i really didnt start all of this to complain, or to bring people down, or even to find answers, i brought it up because this is the 'photography' i've doing these last couple months...theory of photography....and if anyone could relate to it, or benefit from it, it would be you guys.
alot of what im dealing with, ultimitely, comes down to my completely unrealistic approach to things, and the speed with which i get bored of things. i dont like doing the same thing twice. if anyone is familiar with the little stickers i do, i never draw the same image over again. they're all one shot deals. ive never painted the same piece twice (simple letters excluded).... ive yet to accept that 'famous' artists will somtimes spend two years making 2 dozen versions of the same painting, before finally completing the one that we wind up knowing...to me that is just unaceptable, but at the same time, who the fuck am i?
blah...food for thought

^ ADD ?
Do you think you've done all you can do with photography?
That there isn't an original idea left in you? Well if that's the case
then put it down and never look back, but I dont think that's the case.
Sure things look formulatic and a little contrived but that's just in how
YOU are seeing them. You see the thirds, the colour levels and all the
technical elements. People might not know that when they take the pics
but it seems like your not interested in pictures as a whole anymore.
Is it like you need to break it down into elements to really appreciate it?
Well I'm sure I'm not going to change your mind in any of this,
but I do recommend switching up your process and finding something new.
Or have a gallery show and listen to all the little punks either rip your shit up
or talk like it's the best shit ever done. that would change the perspectives quick fast.

dont think tht you cant 'change my mind'. my mind isnt made it, its just frustrated and unhappy. if i felt it was 'made up' i wouldnt have bothered talking about it.

i should also admit to a complete obsession with over analyzing things.
anytime im doing anything, im trying to figure out how something works, or why it is the way it is. it's not like a freaky obsession, just an extreme desire to understand things.
i wrote a book a couple years ago breaking down modern art and modern culture. it was more of a big magazine with alot of pictures, than a book really, but still....one of these days i need to finish it. its pretty dope.
but thats all whatever.

1,2,3 & 5, if technicaly done better, would be 'good'. not saying as photo's they arent good, but you know what i mean.
pilau, you must have posted that just when i did, cause i didnt see it till just now.
and as ive agreed with the others, i too will agree with you, it is about capturing that moment in time. i guess im just frustrated with the lack of angles, and lack of different ways to capture those moments.
and i should say that what i'm talking about with all of this, is mostly 'landscape' or 'still' images. photographing anything that conveys a feeling of 'life' or is an action shot, something depending on capturing that split second in time, is a whole different ballgame, and is not at all subject to the same scrutiny.
i dont know. im tired, im hungry, im warm.
im listening to eminem.

I used to hate people in my photos. I've since realized that interesting people make things even better.

hey pmb i was looking at this photo and i thought that maybe if you adjusted the aperture and shutterspeed on your camera this photo wouldnt suck as much. Now, the photo lacks any real depth and the composure is all wrong. maybe if you step back from the subject a little you will actually be able to see what is going on. i'd suggest you use a minolta 1400 with 26 exposure film. wind it on manually and develop it in the dark room on your own. make sure you dont let any light get to the film because maybe thats why its mostly dark. overexposed. and you should go back at a more suitalbe time of day to take the picture. I'd also suggest some documentation and a little bit better composure. But i mean obvoiusly you're a beginner so keep at it son.
you got beef with this guy or what? people do take silhouette photos you know
