hey seeking i dont take it personally no worries. in fact its refreshing to have some real dialouge about an image.

I didnt use bulb because i didnt have a cable release or a tripod with me and didnt want camera shake. The camera was rested on the edge of a bridge and just proped up with the strap. Your comment about high noon makes since and it got me thinking that maybe a black and white conversion would give the image some more impact by allowing me to control the contrast in the sky. Here is a quick conversion.

it still seems a little bit off, but definitely works better in B&W.
as much as i dont like using 'photoshop filter' like effects, some vignetting around the edges and a little more of a 'worn' grainy kind of effect would give it a cool old tymey sort of feel.

its underexposed, lacks contrast, saturation, a clear focal point, any kind of natural flow and the blurred clouds hurt your eyes.

thanks man its a blackbird though. he put on a little show for me as i was leaving and i got kinda lucky with that shot.


shooting wildlife is all about luck.... and waiting.. smoking pot is a good way to pass the time though.

Also, i tried to get some shots of the ducks flying but those fuckers were doin 60 MPH EASY and it is hard as shit to focus on them.

for some reason my internet at work wont let me post more than liek 5 sentences as a time. grrr.

second pic is the best. its also the only one exposed properly.
last ones honestly arent that good. even if they werent under exposed (except for the light, which is totally blown out) the composition is just kinda...not that good. in the pic with the can, absolutely nothing is in focus. not the forground, nor the background. with the other one... its not awful, but like... its still not very good.

...if you backed up a bunch and then zoomed in on the hanging object, so the rest of the wall behind it was out of focus, it would have been better, but as is, its just kind of flat and boring. at the same time, you're going to have a real hard time getting those pictures to expose properly, because of the darkness under the bridge and the light at the end of it. youd bascially have to 'bracket' the shot, shoting parts under and parts over, then splicing it together in photoshop. thats a lot of work for a shot that isnt that good to begin with. ha.

for me, the corners are now way more distracting than they probably were before.
they're the one 'unatural' element in the photo, which instantly pulls my eye away from the dude. that very well could just be me though.

FWIW, i'd have burned the building in the background a bit, and probably dodged him some. and as much as i rail against photoshopping things a ton, i might take out the pink square next to him. i like the color that it ads, but for me its a little distracting ince its dead center and basically neon pink. ha.


i hope i dont seem like im being over critical or anything, im just kinda pointing out the things that would bother me if it was something i took. overall its a cool photo, im just super nit picky.

Decaying: they were shot with an old Polaroid 600 "one step". It's a pain to carry around due to the size of the thing, but ultimately worth it.

Which small light source on my LJ? You mean the pen light?
I do all sort of lighting techniques. Those shots above were taken during a thunderstorm, so the light outside came from lightning. The first one for example was completely natural light. To me it is a nice picture, but I also wanted filler light to get the details of my parents in the porch, so I used a handheld flash and popped it off a couple times. I'm starting to shoot more with the idea of getting more light coverage over the entire photograph... Basically which would lead to a perfect looking Histogram in Photoshop. Digital OR Film.

Yeah I'm doing some photography work for a French web designing company and also getting some of my photography in a few restaurants, magazines and gallery’s. But living here makes you lazy as shit, it’s so easy to do nothing. By nothing I mean not making money and basically getting drunk every night and getting skin cancer on the beach. so i have a question. for all you out there who own the tokina at-x 107 fisheye, what's the compatibility on those babies? i currently own a canon eos 30d and i've been looking at this lens for a while but i still haven't gotten any answers on the agreeableness with the two put together.

As far as I know, I'm the only person who owns an AT-X 107 here.
I use it on my Nikon and it works great. Haven't tried it with a Canon EOS, but I would assume it works just as fine.

It's a bad ass lens.

i have a question for all you dudes.

i recently shot a bunch of photos for my friends band to be in their new album art. i was wondering what normal freelance photographer rates were. they're a pretty big band so they have money, but i dont know what to charge.

any thoughts?

your time, equiptment rental (if any) film (if any) , and what you are going to give them in the end, plus what they are going to use them for.

even if its a good friend i would write up a contract that says how long they can use the image for and what they will be using it for. it sounds a little dick but if you give all you photos away with no time+usage contraints, they could become a world famous band and your photos could become iconic. on the other hand, if you dont care, charge them between 300-800 bucks depending on how much work you spent, and all that other stuff i wrote at the begining.
you and your buddy might not be friends forever and it would be a drag if practically gave the photos aways and his band went on to use them extiensivly.

remember, we photographers always will own the images, what we sell to our clients is liscensing fees. ex. '"you may use these photos for 1 album cover + 1 promo poster with distribution of 20,000 copies for 1 year." If they decide they want to use it again, make more flyers, posters, re release the album cover, they cannot do this without permission, (IF YOU BOTH SIGN A CONTRACT). If you just hand copies of you photos on a disk to them, they can do whatever they want with the photos. they make money singing, why shouldnt you make money using your skills??? thats all ffor now, goodnight

Well said. Its important to practice good business as a photographer, that way, when another photographer ends up working with these people, they dont have to hear... "The last guy only charged me this... what do you mean one time only, I dont own these photos?!?" I think its good to ask questions and try and find out what other people are charging for shit, as freelancers, it helps everyone out if we try and stick to a common business plan. Just my thoughts on it...

so i just found out that my photo teacher i had in high school past away last week. probably one of the biggest influences i've had in my life seeing as he was the man that taught me technique and pretty much everything i know about photography other than my own personal style.
my question is, would you all find in inapropiate in any way for a couple of my friends and i to leave some of our best work by his gravestone to pay our respects?
