Get a Vivitar 285 and learn how to use a manual flash. They are fucking work horses. Powerful and cheap. That will be my next photo purchase. That and another pocket wizard reciever.

2 Pocketwizards are getting delivered tomorrow with some rechargable AA batteries and a cheap shiity optical slave flash that a friend has/recomended to me.

Another option for the flash:

Metz Mecablitz CT60-1 (http://cgi.ebay.com/METZ-Mecablitz-60-CT-1-2-Professional-Flash-Germany_W0QQitemZ190302622669QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH _DefaultDomain_210?hash=item190302622669&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A13 18|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50)

Mecablitz CT60-4 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Metz-Mecablitz-60-CT-4-Flash-Unit-NR-84032_W0QQitemZ290312639712QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDigi tal_Camera_Flashes?hash=item290312639712&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A13 18|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50)

I have the 60-4. These were $800 flashes back in the 90s, but the TTL on them doesn't work with modern cameras so people don't use them much and they go cheap on eBay, but they have all kinds of manual settings and also meter very well on their own if you dial in the ISO and Aperature from your camera on the unit. They are insanely bright, guide number is something like 930 feet at ISO 1600.

I was shooting some DJs last weekend in an outdoor pavilion with a 60 foot roof and was able to use bounce flash off the roof for lighting at ISO 800 without any problems.

At more normal speeds, they'll flash at up to 5 frames per second.

You're using PW's right?

What was that cheapie strobe kit you ordered? Interested.

And I think I am going to grab some Cactus Triggers or some Alien Bee's soon.

Need to grab that 70-200mm f 2.8 L befoe I get the set of pocket wizards.

XJONATHONX

Didnt order a cheapy strobe kit. I ordered a cheap, weak hotshoe flash with a built in optical sensor. So that I can trigger my 580ex2 with pocket wizards and then trigger that flash off its optical slave. What do you need strobes for?

Portraits and shit, bball games too.

This is what I got.

I've never fucked with a 420. My 580 is bright as shit, can keep up with my 6.5 frames per second, can go from full power all the way down to 1/128, can do stroboscopic effects, and can be used as a master slave to control other 580's or 420's. I dont know. I don't use the ettl much.

to be honest, i would love to hear some shit talking about my images, im in that rut where everytime i go out to shoot, i come home feeling like, "i already shot that". i know i need some new projects, but i would feel a lot better if you all could reveal some errors i hadnt seen before, so that from now on my work feel more error-less haha.

thanks in advance, i understand its somewhat self-absorbed to be like, "LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME", on the internet.

thanks for the comments. and to be honest, i find it very difficult as well- at times it can be irresponsible, or even insensitive to just shove a camera in someones face. alot of people in the past involved in more 'journalistic' endeavors would claim, 'oh its okay what i do [as opposed to what someone else might be doing], because i'm doing it in the name of art [or truth, or whatever].

as far as my images, i was lucky- i either knew, or was rightly introduced, to most of the people who i was photographing. i seriously doubt i would have most of these images if my other job didn't allow me to be introduced to these people first, and in such a way that it wouldn't be outlandish for me to be taking photos.

if you're serious about getting into more work like this, you should pm me, i can offer some tips on how 'to get in' into whatever subject you might be interested in documenting.

You can't get away with it here without risking regular altercations, most people get supertelephoto lenses that are into that kind of photography here or are just good at talking it up with strangers..

Mayor I love your photographs. The colors, and subjects expressions...etc.
I have the same problem as losing when it comes to street photography.
I would very much like to be able to capture people I don’t know like that
but always get self conscious in snapping.

Sometimes so much that I shy away from objects lest I offend someone
by giving them the impression that I am photographing them.

I'd prop you on your social skills
enabling you to take greath photos and your skill but I am 24'd.

Looking for a video about street photography I saw a while ago I found this one about Joel Mayerowitz which is quite good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCCs_nedFhY

It's quite funny how he prides himself on being able to become 'invisible' by dressing like a russian hitman from some terrible film and jumping around taking photos of people. Folk don't seem to mind too much though.

This is the video I was looking for. This guy pretty much attacks people with his camera. It's an interesting watch. He does create some excellent images though.

It is so annoying to constantly have pictures and video taken of you even when you know the guy.

I went to the Central Mexican states of Michoacán and Guanajuato back in 2007.
I call this series "The Face of Mexico"

Here are a few of the people that I met:

I met David Morales during his morning walk in La Piedad, Michoacán. He told me that he is 104 years old. As a young man he fought in the Mexican Revolution alongside Pancho Villa in Chihuahua .

Are u asking me? If so its because honda makes acura, acura is just rebadged for the U.S. And it goes with the whole JDM theme/look for the car.

Yeah, they make a 70mm f2.4 which is almost as small... Seems like it would be a great lens for candid street photography as nobody would possibly think that thing had any kind of reach to it.

Either another canon, I'd look for lower megapixels on the new batch of P&S cams as they're trying to cram too many photosites on the sensors these days and the images are noisy, or hunt around on eBay and see if you can find a Rebel 300D or Nikon D40 or similar for that price. I've seen refurbs selling for $300 so I'm sure a used one can be had if you look...

I've been wanting to get a new compact camera that I can just keep in my purse where ever I go and still be able to take decent photographs.

I just purchased a Nikon P6000

http://www.nikonusa.com/Assets/Digital-Camera/26135-COOLPIX-P6000/Views/353_26135_P6000_front.jpg

Opinions on this camera?

I was contemplating between the Nikon P6000 and a Canon G10...

The newer point and shoots rule, some of them take better quality shots than SLR's from a couple years ago and you can even shoot Raw files on the nicer ones.

*On a semi related note Nikon Released an SLR camera for under $800 that is getting great reviews.
It also shoot 720p video/audio, dope considering you can use most interchangeable Nikkor lenses for nice effects and DOF control.

I really dunno what you're talking about. Fashion pictures always make sense.

For example:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/dathok/testshoot1copysmallcutout.jpg
A half naked girl on a motorcycle next to a table.
A girl with gold pants under the table next to a caged bird.
A guy eating a lump of raw meat with black and silver fingers.
A black panther skull and lots of crystal on top of a mirror table.

What doesn't make sense about that?

So models are none of those kinds of people?

And would you say no to get paid at the MINIMUM 1000 per page in a magazine?

Mercer2789
05-14-2009, 09:36 PM
Yes models suck, every model I've met is retarded in one way or another or they would find something to do that requires a brain,
Strippers are the same thing just slightly less annoying when they pretend they had a thought.
I don't see why dudes get all gaga over them when there are much hotter chicks out there that are less annoying and coked out.

As far as money goes, who cares?
I'm banking more than your average "pro"tographer on some blue collar technical shit.
Money means nothing, using your skills to communicate, express, improve the world is what I'm into.

I see some meaningless studio shot, I'll forget it in 2 seconds.
I see a shot of real life beauty it affects me forever.

azert
05-14-2009, 09:45 PM
And how many models have you met? Most girl models are around 16-20 so of course they're not going to be very smart yet, and many eastern european models come from poor families so they're often exploited. And I take it you were only referring to girl models?

I'm not talking about your average photographer. And I highly doubt that you make 6000-10000 a day. I'm not saying you don't get paid well for whatever you do, but that's a shit load of money to about anyone.

TootsieRoller
05-14-2009, 09:49 PM
You really have no idea what you're talking about. I've known plenty of intelligent models, some who are just doing it on the side to pay their way through school.

Mercer2789
05-14-2009, 09:51 PM
Dude, I live in NYC, models are a dime a dozen here, so are fashion photographers.
Met two Japanese models last weekend and their friend who didn't model was hotter.

Oh, Ive got friends who shoot fashion and assist, $1000-$6000 a day sounds good but if you factor in expenses and they don't work consistently then yes, I do make more than most of them.
I know of three people now going belly up because of the economy looking for 9 to 5's

Tootsie, I'm not talking out my ass, I know models that have made the cover before, my friend Scott dated one for two years,
she was only a nice penis ornament in his own words after they broke up, my opinion of her was even lower.

Just because you live in NYC doesn't mean you meet and talk to models everyday.

Most fashion photographers aren't really interested in fashion, they like taking photos and fashion is where the money (and benefits) are. Most top photographers are very capable of taking natural photos too.

And making the cover of a magazine isn't that big of a deal. There are many, many magazines and a new cover each month. Just because your friend dated one for two years doesn't make you an expert on models.

What were the Japanese models' names btw?

Mercer2789
05-14-2009, 10:28 PM
So what makes you an expert?

I know I'm generalizing all models and all fashion photography, I'm sure there are exceptions.
I just think if you have talent as an artist, you should be focusing on improving the world and communicating deeper thoughts than "buy this, it's cool".
Photographers fall into the artist category in my book, why focus on wasting your short time here as a lowly salesperson.

Don't try to call me out on some 2nd grade "what were their names" trying to see if I'm lying.
My credibility speaks for itself, even if I was lying I'd be slick enough to beat your obvious lying test without dropping names of my friends friends on here.

azert
05-14-2009, 10:43 PM
I modeled full-time in Japan for just under three years. And by full time I mean 3-5 jobs a week and making enough to live and save money. I wasn't trying to pull your card by asking their names, I know a lot of Japanese models so I was wondering if I knew them.

I agree that most fashion photos are boring, but I just disagreed that models were stupid. Some are and fit the Zoolander model perfectly, but there are many nice people in fashion.

I think it's been proven many times you can never win anything on the internet.

Proof: See DAO's posts on 12oz if you haven't blocked him already.

Since I've only been complimented on one photo, I'm guessing my photos aren't very good? Truthfully, I'd be happy with mediocre, since I got my first digital, non-disposable camera about 6 months ago. Not that that's an excuse, but I'm pretty ignorant with things with a lot of options and settings. I'm waiting until my aunt visits so I can finally try a manual focus camera.

Can any of you guys recommend a good point and shoot that has decent quality and can be used for traveling (not as big as a DSLR). I am thinking the Canon ixus 980. Is this a good option? Do you have any other recommendations? I was also looking at a Canon g10 but I think it might be a tad big and I cant really take it out with me unless I have a bag present.

My great-aunt's village is having a sorta village wide yard sale thing, meaning most people will set up a yard sale on their yard on the same weekend, and I was helping her move stuff and I found a camera she was going to be selling. Of course I asked for it, and she was nice enough to give it to me.

So now I have a Minolta XG1 35mm camera with a minolta 135mm 1:35 lens and a petri 55mm 1:1.8 lens. The petri lens doesn't connect, so I'm wondering if there would be an adapter for it?

Anyways, I'm very, very happy.

Edit: the mount is a Minolta MD mount.

So now I'm confused as if I'll need a T-mount adapter or a T2-mount adapter.

the d40 is great for the price.....and unless ur printing on a big scale the 6mp, shouldnt b an issue, also d60 with 2 lense kit is great.....10mp, just under 1000, you can always find a deal also......d90 is about 1400.....but its an amazing camera....you just cant go wrong with it.....i have all 3.....and i tend to use my d60 when i walk around some gully spots.....and it gives me great results! just my opinion....

I think the band shots do look a little flat, but i think alot of that has to do with the no detail pitch black background behind them. I didn't really mind that, but what bugged me is the reflection in the dudes glasses. Im not on my mac so I cant apple zoom in, but it looks like reflection from a softbox. Thats just a big pet peeve of mine. but I also know that glasses without anti glare coating can be a bitch to work with.

critiques aside, the band feels it and thats what matters.

i know jonothon said they look flat, but one is currently their default on myspace, so they at least like them.

Should have made them pay you for it. Aren't they a big time band?

anyone wanna buy some lenses? i'll let them go pretty cheap as i'm broke right now. these are for nikon digital slr's.

Tamron 28-80mm 3.5-5.6-slightly used

Tamron 75-300mm 4 5.6-i used this once when i first got my camera
I've been using a Tamron 28-105mm 3.5-4.5 forever. Rarely use the long end either, so i'd definitely recommend the 28-80mm to anyone who wants a relatively wide angel lens with some minor zoom options.

Why'd the shoot at the dog 20?

somehow she got out of her fence so a neighbor called the cops saying there was a loose dog running around so when the cop showed up she was "snarling and barking" at the cop, which is impossible coming from the sweetest dog in the world. then the cop opened fire. FTW.

but, thankfully, she is going fine.
