yeah the last two are really nice with the colors just popping out. I think maybe they might need a crop and rotate to make them more square but that all depends on you. Either way very nice job!! If you built that then also a very nice job as well. Im building a wine cellar now but it will be a while before I can make some nice pics.

I'm currently looking at 4 schools: Harrington College of Design in Chicago, Colorado Mountain College, Hallmark in rural Mass, and New England School of Photography in Boston. Right now I'm leaning towards Harrington, a big part of that being that it's in Chicago and I was raised a Cubs fan and love the city.
Anyone heard/know anything about any of these schools reputations or anything of the sort?

thats right near where i go to school thats on madison and wells of the brown line.there is a ton of shit to do in downtown and theres always something going on down there and theres also tons of things to eat down there also

yo, i wanna step up my game and get a better camera than your basic digital point and shoot and hopefully get a little more into photography. even tho i don't have my premium account anymore, i read through the thread about getting started for beginners, so i have a decent idea of what's up.

what kind of camera would be good for a relative noob like me? should I check out one of these "mega zoom" cameras i saw discussed in another thread (http://www.12ozprophet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130566). or should i get an slr? it seemed like a 50mm wide angle lense is your most general slr. what kind of price ranges are we talkin?

any ideas, suggestions, and/or help will be appreciated. thanks

New DSLR's would start at around $500-$600 for just a camera body and lenses run anywhere from $100-$5000. You can find some good deals on your local craigslist or on the net but make sure the person is trustworthy and thoroughly inspect it before you decide to buy it.

There are also some very nice point and shoot cameras for under $500. It all depends on your budget and how serious you think you will be about your photography.

^those are point and shoots. point and shoots are any that doesn't have the manual focus mode.

personally, i wouldn't recommend one of those 'half-way crook' point and clicks, if you think youll be serious enough to want something like that, might as well graduate to a dslr (try the nikon d3000 or whatever the latest canon rebel xti), or if you dont think those will serve you, get a niice boxy silver digi cam.

yea, i agree. not much point in spending dough on a 'bridge' camera only to realize after a year a dslr is what i want and then proceed to spend more dough.

yeah, as far as the difference between 1 and 2+3 goes, its just a question of if you anticipate wanting to print stuff out at 12x18 or whatever the 12 megapixel photo-quality dimensions are. if you don't plan on printing out your photos, then save your money. on the screen, all of those will look roughly the same if they have the same lens on them.

as far as trying to decide if you wanna just roll with the kit lenses or if you wanna upgrade, again, it depends on what you think youll be doing with it. this lens is 200 bucks (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/35mm-f18.htm), you could grab the 3000 body, skip the kit lens and have a prime 35mm 1.8. i know you get the kit discount, but the new kit lens (f3.5-5.6, 18-55 mm) goes for 200 alone, and i think the 35 mm 1.8 is way better. but the new kit lens has vibration reduction, which nikon claims is the equivalent to being able to go down 4 stops (im skeptical).

if i were you, i would go 35mm 1.8, but thats just me. if you do a lot of architectural photography or stuff that would make you want to open up to 18mm then think this through, but thats the only thing i could think of that would make you want the kit lens over the 35mm prime

Kit lenses are a waste of money IMO, glass never gets outdated or wears out like a camera body does.
If the low quality of a kit lens doesn't bother you, you might as well just cop a high end point and shoot.

Get something good now, not expensive, but good, that shit will last you forever most of the time.
I've got about $3000 in lenses now and my 50mm f1.8 is my favorite, and only cast $120.

Can someone explain this DX sensor Nikon shit to me? I'm looking at lenses again and it's confusing as fuck. Should I avoid a lens if its DX specific, or will that not make a difference on a non-DX body?

If you plan on getting a camera with a full frame FX format sensor in the future a DX lens will work most of the time,
but the edges of the photo will come out shitty.

I looked into Hallmark when I was in high school, but then I remembered I didn't have any money, ha. I don't know a whole lot about the other schools, but Hallmark has a pretty good reputation from what I've heard. Also, New England can be pretty beautiful in the fall. Really lends itself to some great photography.

I'm using a 1.8 now, I tried my friends 1.4 and didn't like it.
Basically with both of those lenses the auto focus is flawless in good light.
As soon as you need the wide aperture because of low light the auto focus isn't any good.

Everything I shoot with it in dark or low light, is using manual and I found the 1.4 to be too wide.
You'll miss most of your shots if you rely on auto focus in the dark.
Even for you're eyes getting the perfect focus in the dark is tough.

i just upgraded to the 50 1.4 from the 1.8 yesterday. havent had a whole lot of time to shoot with it, but i feel like it is much sharper and cleaner than the 1.8 and they both suck equally at auto focusing in low light but at least you can go lower if you want. im much happier already with the 1.4.

I hate auto focus. But, to be fair, most of the auto focus lenses I've used had really shitty focusing rings, so it was a lot easier to use auto focus.

Lower aperture lenses are awesome. I'd kill for a minolta 1.2 lens.


I was hoping to process some rolls this week, but I didn't have enough time. Hopefully next week I can process and drop them off to be scanned. Vermont finally had a huge snow storm and I think I got some nice snowy pictures. Used the wide angle mostly though.

typically i have to work in an upbeat/uncontrolled and dynamic environment so that focusing should be the least of my worries.

the autofocus is pretty good on most nikkor lenses although the autofocus on my 2.8f 300mm is SPECTACULAR beyond belief.

i'm not sure i know what were talking about, but if, for example, you ALWAYS change the recovery all the way to the right, the fill light to about 10, and contrast at 80-100, and a soft vignette to top it all off. if you create a preset to just do that for you, how is that cheating?

Im okay with creating your own presets because in doing that you actually learn the programs and what certain settings can do to your pictures, i do think there is artistic merit to editing pictures and having a good knowledge of the programs used to do so. I'm not at all saying editing is cheating, but just downloading a preset to give a photo a certain look doesn't exactly scream talented with a camera.

This photo does it. Like, the top left is completely different from the bottom right, then you got the sand and the gravel; the blank space in the bottom left, that changes after/beyond the record. Ahh man.

Regarding the photographing of strangers:

1. bring a little photo album with you of your portfolio, and show it to strangers. right your email on a bunch of pieces of paper and hand it to them, asking them to contact you and you will send the print/image.

2. if you are looking for 'candid' shots, either use a zoom lens (2-300mm, etc.), or learn how to shoot without looking through the viewfinder/screen.

3. you will get better images by looking for interesting moments, approach the person and tell them who you are/show them your portfolio. Then, hang back and wait for them to start to ignore you again. It takes time, but if you ask someone to photograph them and immediately go ahead, you are not going to get 'natural' moments.

4. Don't use your iPod. You need all your senses, and a huge (slept-on) characteristic necessary for street photography is one's ability to be charismatic. Everyone loves to talk about how they wish they were invisible, etc., but it is much easier to enter situations where the people feel comfortable with you and your camera, rather than pretending that no one knows you are there.

for that price you've got two options, the stock lens which is crap and she might already have. The other is a 50mm 1.8 II which is a great portrait lens but not wide like you wanted. for her xti you want an ef or ef-s mount lens.

go with the 50mm 1.8 II its a solid lens if she doesn't already have it

Hey, I'm looking to invest in a new camera. I was going for the Canon EOS 5D, but I honestly don't think I'm up to the level to handle a camera like that. I'm looking for a point and shoot that takes really clean crisp pictures. I'm currently checking out the Canon s80 and was wondering if anyone had experience with this camera or could recommend anything better.

well if you were considering a dslr in the first place id suggest going with one. get a nikon used and it'll be the around the same price as the s80. and if you want to upgrade the lenses will be cheaper than if you have a canon dslr.

butttttt if you really want a point and shoot get the canon g11 its great.

5d to s80 though is quite the jump.

i rock the DX f:/1.8 35mm, that is my joint. pretty much the only lens i use.

my opinion is that the alure of fisheyes wear off whereas 35mm is just 'reality', but hey, thats just me.

which range are you talking about? the 85 mm is 410, i was talking about the 35mm, which is 200... and the 50mm (nonDX) is 120 :confused:

You can use it a few different ways.

You can just mount it in the flash shoe on your camera and use it like an on camera flash.

Set your camera's flash settings to commander mode so the on camera flash remote operates it.

You can also do a long exposure and operate the flash hand held and walk around lighting stuff up.

Or buy more shit and put an RF transmitter in your cameras flash shoe, and mount the external flash to a receiver.

Use it to temporarily blind your girl then pull up her shirt & skirt and get nudes.

ive considered getting a pocket wizard.

a question for people that have used them, do you mount your flash into the pocket wizard
then mount that onto a tripod or do you need a flash shoe of some sort to mount onto the pocket wizard first??

For the most part they are versatile and there are several ways to set them up depending on which model you have and the other components like cables adapters ect..

Basically, you connect one to your camera using a cable made for your model of camera, most people use the flash shoe to mount the transceiver to but the cable does the work.
As far as the flash goes, Ive only worked with power packs with the receiver built in, it fires whatever flashes are plugged into it when your camera tells them to via the pocket wizard.

You use adapters to plug in external battery operated flashes like the sb600 and they come in different configurations:

You need a cord/adapter to connect the transceiver to whatever type of flash you are using, thats how they work with pretty much any flash out there.
