Damn those are some nice shots. The fan, over-used headphones and pet shots especially.

How was the fan shot done?

MrChupacabra
06-21-2004, 06:03 AM
light was turned off, camera was placed on floor looking up, shot was taken on bulb with a cable release that i locked down during the shot. I attempted to outline the three fan blades with a little flashlight, after i was done, i turned off the flashlight, went and flipped on the light on the fan for a second and turned it off, walked over and released the cable.

The grain you're wanting is a property of the chemicals on film. On digital cameras, all you'll get is its shitty cousin, noise. Depending on your camera you'll either want to under or overexpose your night shots, and perhaps set the ISO really high. Most cameras have some sort of internal noise reduction though.

Got paid to take some event pictures a couple weeks ago. The web designer completely botched the JPEG encoding so they look like shit, but they're on a company website so that's a plus.

Lower your ISO and use a tripod. Should do it, unless you're using a Nikon, in which case there's going to be a little bit of grain no matter what. Also shoot on your raw file format if you can, that way when you print the file the grain isn't near as evident.

- Spectra (20.00)

- Sun600 LMS (.95)

I seriously must have about 50 Polaroid cameras now.

OOps, I thought he was asking how to get grain. I need to read better. Go down to ISO 100 or 50 if possible. My camera cost $1500 and the noise at ISO 400 is still pretty shitty.

This is the largest I can fit on photobucket. I have one that's 3.5MP if you really want it but this should be good enough. The aliasing was caused by the way I processed it in the camera software and needs to be fixed with photoshop, but I don't have a copy here.

Ayuh, Polaroid. Had "digital" on my mind browsing the discussion above. This is definitly no good. Tesser, where do you live again? Somewhere Mediterranean? I have family in Poland who've said that when a package goes through there half the time it gets opened and tampered with. Not trying to incite anything, but could this have happened? It'd be fucked, no?

It was going from tesser in greece to me in the states. Even if it was opened and looked at, there was nothing that would prevent it from being closed back up and sent. Why the hell would it come by boat?

worst case scenario?
snafu?
I don't really remember.
I think you have to specify air...but I'd be surprised if tesser didn't do that.

the last package I got that started out like this...ended up showing up on my doorstep weeks later in a completely different box...and of course the contents were fucked up.

Poop Man Bob

Tesser has sent me a package that took a looooooooong time to arrive. Not sure how long, but I believe it was over 3-4 weeks. Plus the package had $60 cash in it, so I was nervous about it getting lost as well. But, it did arrive, and the world is good. I trust the Polaroid will arrive in due time.

If not, we can just ban Tesser.

Although he did comply. He got the package, took his photos, and sent it on it's way.
If it gets/got lost, it's not COMPLETELY his fault.

Is this the one you're talking about or are you talking about some other odd looking polaroid that i guess is also a 440?

By cop anything for it do you mean get much money by selling it or are you asking if you're still able to get film for it and such. If its the first, you probably couldn't sell it for very much, you could try ebay though. If you don't want to ebay it, I'd be willing to purchase it for a little bit. If it was the second question, then yes, you can still buy film and all of that good stuff for it. It uses these types of film (http://www.polaroid.com/global/movie.jsp;jsessionid=Aubw2UASz6z6aW6d2p2j86VWP56iQ XI6jdrJnkYayl4ks2ZvSwWn!-2017792496!-1979950377!7005!8005!-1981417235!-1979950386!7005!8005?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441 759887&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=282574488338441&bmUID=1089395568375&PRDREG=null#packx3)

Hey, what is the difference between an SLR camera and a Rangefinder? I understand the whole slr being about to see exactly what is coming through the lens and rangefinders having the viewfinder just there but are there advantages? Why do leica's cost so much?

MrChupacabra
07-09-2004, 06:14 PM
I had no idea what the answer to that was off the top of my head, so i found a bit of info:

A rangefinder camera is one with a double (stereoscopic) viewfinder, allowing the photographer to judge the focusing distance. The rangefinder shows a double image, and lining up the two images of the object to be focused on more or less accurately gauges its distance. Older cameras may display the focusing distance and require the photographer to transfer the value to the lens focusing ring; most recent designs are coupled rangefinders - that is, the focus is adjusted both in the rangefinder and in the objective lens by the same control.

The most famous rangefinder cameras are the Leica M-series. The latest of these is the M7, which is the first of the series to feature automatic exposure. Other current models include the Contax G1 and G2, the Voigtlander Bessa R and R2, and the Hasselblad Xpan. Russian Leica copies like the Zorki and Fed brands are fairly common in the used market. These all take 35mm film; there are also medium-format rangefinders like the Mamiya 7, the Pentax 67 and the Fuji G-series.

Rangefinder cameras are less commonly used than single-lens reflex models. SLRs are usually more technically advanced, with more system options, and have the advantage that the image is seen through the same lens through which it is photographed.

Since the user looks through a viewfinder some distance from the lens and sees an image which is slightly different from the image which will be recorded on the film framing becomes inaccurate at close range. Rangefinder cameras will typically work best in taking pictures of objects far away, such as landscapes, where the difference between the viewer and the lens will not have as great of an effect. For closeup photography, the rangefinder camera is inappropriate, as the image recorded may be significantly different from what the viewer sees.

However, rangefinders do have several advantages. Since there is no moving mirror, as used in SLRs, the shutter response is very fast and quiet. The lack of a mirror also allows lenses to project deep into the camera body, and so higher quality wide-angle lenses are possible. (Voigtlander's 12mm is the widest-angle non-fisheye lens in general production.) The focusing system is more accurate with standard and wide-angle lenses (whereas an SLR is more accurate with telephotos). Since the cameras are simpler, build quality is generally higher - while most Leicas are treasured and protected from the slightest scratch, they are nonetheless capable of withstanding considerable abuse. These qualities make rangefinders ideal for action-grabbing candid shots and street photography.

from here (http://www.fact-index.com/r/ra/rangefinder_camera.html)

I have no clue why they cost so much though.

that link didn't work chupa.. but i think it takes the 690 film, or whatever... couldn't get a price w/ out registering... so fuck it.

it's in pretty good condition.. i didn't notice any probs w/ it.. i got it for free. i will prolly be interested in selling it, but i'll prolly wanna play around w/ it a lil bit. at the rate i move, that prolly means about a year and a half (6 months to bother getting the film, 6 months of slacking, and 6 months of playing)

i also found some seperate flash attachment, but i don't think it's for that camera... any who, if i get sick of it, i'll let you know (or you could make me an intimidaitng offer now ;))

urg, yeah, link doesn't work, but just check www.polaroid.com (http://www.polaroid.com) and that will tell you all the film types it takes and what the different films are like. Its also very possible that the flash is for the 440 since it does work with a flash attachment.

Thanks for the info. I was at the camera store the other day and was just like, "What the fuck?"

Another question!!

Is it possible to buy straight up photo emulsion? I know they sell it for screen printing and such but would I be able to get some emulsion and put it on say a piece of aluminum and try and make a print that way? Like an old fashion tintype?

Picked this up today for all of $5. Anscoflex II TLR. Read up on it online and it dates back to the 50s. It takes 620 film which they don't make anymore but I managed to jam a roll of 120 in there. Apparently 620 and 120 are the same exact film on the 620 has a smaller spool.

I'm pretty hyped about this camera so hopefully you will see results soon.

If anyone has any information about this camera please share. I only found out a little.

Some news:

As stated before the Polaroid Pass Around has reached MrChupacabra, but there's been a problem.
It would seem as though the package underwent some form of extreme heat during its month overseas (and god knows where else it fucking went). So, in short.. the undeveloped film was fucked.
Chupa tried to take his two shots, but they each came out a mess of brown, green and white photo chemicals.
He even tried the EXTRA pack of film, but to no avail.

Sadness.
Luckily, our very dear friend Chupa is nice enough to purchase two more packs of 669 color film.

EVERYONE THANK HIM FOR HELPING THE PROJECT CONTINUE!

Also, please note a new rule;
From now on the outside of the package MUST be labled as such:

"CAUTION!: Package contains undeveloped FILM!
Keep away from extreme heat!"

In other news, I'm a big pussy and I finally bought a digital camera (http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/nikon8700.html).

It's smaller. One thing that annoys be about some digital cameras it the size.
I've held this one in stores and it's a perfect grip.

I have no need for DSLR. I'm not looking to go all out with my photos, i.e. sell them professionaly or try to make posters with the huge ass resolution.

The 8700 is perfect for me. Small with a ton of features... That and I can fit my Phoenix Fisheye lens on it.

Right on, just wondering. They recently bought an 8700 for work and nobody there really knows how to use it, I'm supposed to hold a little class on it some time.

When I first got the SD9, the size was killing me. I think it is about the largest DSLR they make anyway, and I was used to carrying a Sony F707 around my neck everywhere I went. I got used to it though, and I take it everywhere now.

These were taken on October 29th, 2003 during that week when everyone was going nuts about the giant "solar flare" that was observed. Remember, everyone thought it was going to interrupt cell phone reception and turn people into zombies? Well, all that really seemed to happen was this cool sunset that I was lucky enough to catch with a crappy digital camara from the roof at work. Image quality is not top-notch because the camara is not that great, the last three pictures represent the timespan of about 10 minutes. You can see how drastically the sky changed in that time.

These were done at about 5:30 in the evening. I think a couple of them would be great album art.

Couple of these are reposts from when Rage hosted a couple for me back around that time.

jbrsh, I hear ya. It's difficult to decide on exactly which camera you want. Some have this feature, another has this... it gets tedious.
I put off getting one myself only because of the prices. When the 8700 first came out around March they were 1000+. I found mine for 300 less on eBay.
God bless mufu'n eBay.

P.s. Lovely seagull shot!

get a ring that pits the lens and a ring that fits the camera and glueweldsmash em together... its ghetto and focal length might be a bit off... but it is a fix... to get my fish eye to fit my video camera i had to use 2 rings but no glue.... i want to make that same fish eye fit my 5700 but i have tried yet...

Seriously though, What would you recommend instead of the pop ups? I don't know flash so a slide show is kinda out of the question. And the pictures can't go any smaller than they already are because they look really crappy(all prints are originally 8x10 and the digi stuff is 5megapixels so it's ungodly huge.) but I can't really make the iFrames big enough for them. I don't know, this sadly is what I've been doing all day.
