after looking at ese's new thread i realized the big photography thread dissappeared, and i have a handfull of pictures from the past month or so that i want to post. For some reason i couldn't find the old photo thread, so i'm starting a new one. Enjoy and add your own.

these are possibly the only two shots i've ever taken that i thorougly enjoy. i really hate everything else i produce. but that goes for everything i do really...i posted them before so sorry for being repetitive as fuck. bump.

as far as photography goes, i was sitting in my photo history class and my professor was just going on and on about such and such being influenced by whoever. i dont know why, but it really really bothers me for some odd reason. its just like people are revamping old styles and not trying to do anything thats actually deserving of merit for originality. i mean...i dont consider myself to be some groundbreaking person by ANY means...but alot of photography (and art in general i guess...) is just the same crap over and over again. talking about how so and so used to work in whoevers studio and basically carried on their work later. but why does the person merely carrying on the work receive what i'd call a good amount of credit when all theyre doing is copying and reproducing? if anyone would like to discuss this itd be pretty cool, as far as if you think art (photography in particular...) has merely become repetition and revamping or who some people are that are going into new and solid ground and doing something great. go nuts.

It's like I finally have the money to support my love of photography so I am buying more stuff and I am able to get my shit developed by the right people. I miss developing it myself though. I need to make my own lab.

jbrshmonster, naw man, the color photo is much much better. The red hand prints make you eye move to the blue wall and then the orange towel and back around again. The B&W print only seems to focus on the handprints themselves.

pescado, if you get rid of the "<-- Me" and the date in the bottom right the photo would be a lot better. Keep it up.

shit, sorry i wouldve answered this last night.......but........im up now...and have to drive my friend to court on 2 hours sleep. so ill attempt to answer........somewhat coherently. and explain later or something. god im out of it...

yeah, much of art tends to be generic in my opinion, or it has gotten generic i should say. first example that comes to mind: ryan mcginley...personally, while i recognize the validity of what he's done and that he does deserve recognition i still dont see anything thats particularly distinguishing to his work. although its been called "quaint" and its been said that he's reflecting the people/generation that he shoots its also been said in the context of him copying established artists such as nan goldin. both of their bodies of work have a different style to them. i personally prefer goldins as i feel that mcginleys shots tend to border on pretentious sometimes. but i can also understand why someone would say that he has merely reworked the style of goldin in some ways. i just get very tired of having to hear about people merely "continuing" someones work whom they admired as if its a virtue. i mean...obviously there will be influence everywhere. but there are alot of the same shameless jockers in photography and the contemporary art world as there are in graf.

im sorry that all of that probably makes no sense. i have to go now. good bye.

imported_Tesseract
05-08-2003, 11:37 AM
Pretty fuckin good for 2 hours of sleep. I totally agree...like in any field 75% percent is pretencious...there are cases where someone just plays the same card cause its just hip and he has the 'talent' to copy it and there are cases where someone evolves by trying things out...i have absolutely no problem with the second case just as long as you skip phases..influence works as a boost to get you someplace else...as time passes by you're suposed to draw conclusions of your own...

I wont talk about the fraud on all the art fields..from graffiti to sculpture where someone might get more credit on a larger, and usually less educated, audience by biting the shit out of someone that spends his time working on his stuff than socialising.

Trends are kinda dangerous, you can see it here to on a smaller scale...there are 12oz trends on photography, abandoned houses, traffic at night, trains and i guess girls (but none of us likes the idea of every greaseball in here drooling over our girl, so fuck that)...I'm not accusing anyone in here for biting and stuff, my best bet is that it mostly has to do with the character of this entire forum and the similarities of the things we do in general, that may be a larger trend to but its a big discussion.

To end, i myself get influenced by pretty much everything i like, i see a dope ese nightshot and i get curious on how its done, i go out and shoot one...hopefully, while experimenting i'll shoot something else that feels more mine...i see a dope Tyler or Rage B&W flick and i start thinking about messing with that...you see a location and you remember about something similar you should take flicks of...i dont see anything wrong with that as long as you always question your motives and the product of an experiment is a lesson taught.

These are both on the nose. This is exactly WHY we post though. This is exactly why we show other people our works. If we didn't they'd all be sitting in our drawers or our photos seem like an awful waste of 1's and 0's on our computers.
:o

Trends help in a way. It helps us find out what's better to take pictures of. It also helps us see what otherwise we may have never looked at before. Take jbrshmonster's pic with the suspended flowers... An ordinary person walking down the street would see this in a display window and blown it off. Jbrshmonster saw it as an opportunity for a great photo. And that's what he got!

Back to the trends. So what if EVERYONE has taken a picture of train-tracks. Boo fucking hoo. Now look at my photo. It was a complete mistake. My professor said "Alan, you know that photos of tracks are overdone. Why not try just different angles, etc." I took her advice. This photo wasn't part of the paln though. A mistake can be a blessing. Then again I woked on that photo for HOURS in the lab trying to get it perfect. Now, if my professor had not known that, I wouldn't have won the award.

TD, I had never heard of those photographers until you mentioned them. You are right, they are in two seperate worlds, BUT they are somewhat similar. They just seem to capture real life.. which most people are afraid to show.

Good works everyone... Keep them coming.

Tyler Durden

yeah...i really dont remember writing my last post....but yeah, the fundamental difference between nan goldin and ryan mcginley (in my opinion...) is that goldins work is more of a "fly on the wall" type deal. whereas mcginleys are very "involved" type photos. neither one is my personal thing really to be honest with you. alot of mcginleys work is sort of pretentious i think in the way that he's like "wow, im gay, look at how gay my friends and i are. oh yeah, we're gay.". i mean....yeah, thats you. great. but like, just because your gay and can shoot photos of your gay friends doesnt particularly make you deserve any sort of special merit.

i anxiously await someone to misinterpret that whole statement. awesome.

just curious what some of you think about b&w...
my op: b&w is too easy. you can take a shot of
something that would be completely subpar using
color film, take the exact same shot in b&w and
blammo, you have a 1st prize shot. i'm exaggerating
a little, but i feel personally that color is much more
challenging. i usually reserve opinions on a photographers
skill until i've seen color shots.

Very true. Color is harder to display. SteveAustin and jbrshmonster take the cake though.

I am a BIG fan of black & white. I'm a projectionist and I love B&W films. I think color shots are so cliche nowadays. Anyone can take a color photograph, but real photographers can take BETTER black and white photos. Take ese's night shots on page 2. Fucking awesome. It's an easy technique too, but it probably looks better in blakc and white than color.

I have very few color photos.

Here's two by me:

I also love B&W. Its just more expressive to me. With all the disposables and what not...color almost seems overdone. I've seen alot of really shitty b&ws though. it has to have the high contrast.

weird thing is...my color work tends to turn out so much better than my black and whites. I just don't get it.

as far as color vs. b+w...i was discussing the topic the other day as far as some professionals refuse to shoot color. basically, i feel its just another tool. theres some shots that are just asking for color and the same with black and white. to get everything right in color and make it look perfect is the same as trying to achieve perfect tonality range in b+w. its all a different set of challenges and i personally think that anyone who limits themselves to one or the other is kind of foolish.

i also hate things with a perfectly even grey on them usually. i just find it uninteresting. i like very contrasty shots. my teacher hates this and has let me know so. however...i could give a fuck.

i like color and black and white, but since im poor and have no access to a darkroom its much easier to go to onehour photos.. i also dont get technical with any of my shit unless i have a specific goal in mind ( like playing with light on the bulb setting.
but whatever....

awesome. theese flicks bring memories of when i climbed this hill before school when it was still dark. i was scouting for a spot above the freeway. it was pitch black though and i couldent see where i was going in the bushes. i sat down and smoked a cigarette as i looked at the city lights. later that morning i beat a kid up. i forgot about that untill i saw your flicks.

in short.
I scanned a polaroid proof from a photo shoot. converted it from a grayscale to a bitmap file.
reconverted that file into an rgb file and selected the black with the magic wand. used the select similar feature.

opened my digital photo and copied it.

went back into the polaroid file and pasted the photo into the selected black areas.

flattened it and saved it as a jpeg.

WOOT for seeing it on top in the morning

ese i'm glad you're going to be a darkroom jockey now. i love that smell.

i'd like to ask all you guys a lot of questions, but don't know where to start.

Maybe something specific...
I'm going to be shooting members of a production company. I want to make something great since this will be my first photo "job". The going feeling is portraits...but not your bland headshot variety.

The images i'm getting in my head remind me of Cindy Sherman

[img]http://cards.corporateecards.com/cards/598565439/large/sherman.jpg'>

Anyway I've been taking prelim shots of locations I want to use, and I was wondering what you guys would suggest; esp experienced photo students. I'm really starting out so I'm sort of making it up as I go along. What type of BW film has treated you best in outdoor (sunshine)? Should I go for my red filter, or do you find it flattens things out too much?

And now for the random
I've posted some of these before also

I just got this developed...no darkroom. I guess it was exposed well cause I love it.

Well to start of you have some great pictures. As for help with your work, I'd say do what you think feels best for you. It probably sounds stupid, but it's also stupid to tell someone how to take pictures of people. You just have to do it and develop your own style.

As for film, again it's whatever YOU like best. I'm a fan of Kodak TMY 400 speed film seen here:

[img]http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL134/1093773/2058325/24735762.jpg'>

As for infared imagery try these sites:

- http://www.coolmint.co.uk/infrared/gallery/640/g1.html

"Use with pan films to create dramatic sky effects, simulated "moonlight" scenes in midday (by slight under-exposure). Excellent copying filter for blueprints. Use with infrared film for extreme contrast in sky, turns foliage white, cuts through fog, haze and mist. Used in scientific photography."

what about non-slide color film? as i told rage yesterday i havent shot color in about a year with my slr and i when i did i usually was going with kodak royal gold 100, even though ive been told that it casts too much of an "orange" on whatever im shooting i still like it. but does anyone else have any favorites as far as color goes?

I love fugi film, I usually use 100 speed, the colors are so saturated they look beautiful, I hate kodak color, i think it SUCKS! But I love kodak b/w 100 speed, reallly nice contrast, and kodak tech pan is dope.
