re: pilau hands and bobby's convo..

Spruce Goose
The History:

It was born of a critical national need to fly over the enemy submarines ravaging shipping lanes during World War II. First designated the HK-1 for the Howard Hughes and Henry Kaiser venture that responded to the government requirement, it was later called the H-4 Hercules.

The Hughes Flying Boat was to be the biggest airplane ever built and probably the most prodigious aviation project of all time. Only the courage and solitary dedication of Howard Hughes and his small development group caused this project to advance what a disgruntled U.S Senator dubbed the "flying lumberyard" resulting in its historic flight in November 1947.

Now commonly tagged the "Spruce Goose" the aircraft has endured to become a popular cultural artifact telling a remarkable story of sacrifice, determination, and technological development. The HK-1, still the biggest aircraft ever built, was decades ahead of its time in the early 1940s. It revolutionized jumbo flying bodies and large lift capability, shaping modern flight.

Along the way, the Flying Boat development encountered and dealt with tremendous design and engineering problems, from the testing of new concepts for large-scale hulls and flying control surfaces, to the incorporation of complex power boost systems that gave the pilot the power of 100 men in controlling this Hercules.

Engineers hung eight of the most powerful engines available on the huge wings, and designed a mammoth fuel storage and supply system to allow the long, over the water, flights. Mr. Hughes and his team accomplished all of this working with non-essential" materials, building a wood aircraft, mostly birch not spruce, that even many of his colleagues dismissed as impossible. All of this was done within the impractical schedule of wartime.

On November 2, 1947, Howard Hughes and a small engineering crew fired up the R-4360s for taxi tests and thrilled thousands of on-lookers with an unannounced flight. With Howard Hughes at the controls, the Flying Boat lifted 70 feet off the water, and flew one mile in less than a minute at a top speed of 80 miles per hour before making a perfect landing.

This trial was simple vindication from the detractors of the program and it is now looked back upon as a great moment in flight history. The popular Spruce Goose is now appropriately regarded as a true American icon.

One day a truly lonely old man tripped on a crack in the sidewalk. "I hate bread crusts and these gawd damn cracks exclamation mark!" said he.

There was a time when he was young but if you were to ask me to tell you that storey i'd say that I’m telling a different storey because I don’t know so much about that. But I do know this storey so its the storey you are going to hear. So don’t bother asking thank you very much.

There was once a beautiful princess that wanted to be a boy. She was way too pretty of a gurl to ever be a boy. She heard voices in her sleep and sometimes you thought she was awake but she was actually napping. If you didn’t know she was snoozing she would hear you talk to her and think that she was hearing voices in her sleep and she would reply but you couldn’t hear her because she didn’t actually talk in her sleep. One of her arms was deformed and I found that sexy. When she was awake she heard voices that weren’t really there and when she was five a boy told her that the only reason she hears those voices in her head when she’s awake is because she’s a gurl. ...the same thing happened to the boys’ mother so he believed it to be true. It’s not that far to Portland if you think about it. So the princess wanted to be a boy but still kiss all the boys. and the boy who told her the lies, mother lies is in Riverview care facility on a bed in a soft green room all alone thinking of the time she was at the beach.

Enter that cranky old codger mumbling under his pea coat collar and half into a beat up brown paper bag “Ima think to get a cheese sandwich and leave the crust on the Prime Ministers door step. Take that Paul.”

I recently purchased a Sony DSC-T1 digital camera. The freakin' thing has a bunch of settings and I can't seem to figure them out. All my shots come out with lines like the ones above... (which are very cool by the way!! Love those last two and the one with the guy walking under the bridge. Very, very nice) is anyone familiar with this camera? How do I change it to take your average everyday photos? If I twitch at all, I get light lines... or whatever they're called. I like the effect, if that's what I'm going for. Not when I'm taking a picture of my artwork though.

joker.

most digital cameras work the same way..
you have to depress the button halfway down ...that sets the focal point.. picking a point or set of points in the near ground or "farground"

if youre shooting artwork.. id definitely use a tripod.. get some solid lights to use..and bracket like you would with a normal camera.

This is a great oppurtunity to get your work noticed! All successful applicants will recieve a free copy of the comic and will get their contact/website details printed. The comic will be well distributed throughout the UK, specifically London, although the offer is open to ANYONE.

Hope to get some feedback soon.

i agree, seeing a sea of skin and bodies, i like the work. i haven't read too much about it, and it has a very short shelf-life, at least to me, but i won't hate. "Get that money dog."

i wonder how you combat that though. i think when you do work of that magnitude, and it becomes kind of a public spectacle...it will just boil down to one of those hit or miss things. i'm sure he has people that have loved his work for years, and people who look at his photos in a gallery, chuckle, and keep on walking. i guess everyone does...

a movie by the title.. "the spook who sat near the door"..
http://www.lethaldeath.com/Crimson/Images/ResidentDVDvil/Spook%201.jpg

here is the history behind the film..

i was blessed with a copy of this film almost 5 years ago.. the copy i obtained was quintuple dubbed video print.. which luckily had good sound. This movie was originally slated for release in 1973.. but was shelved prior to hitting the screen. this is a pretty unique movie... and luckily it has just quite recently in the past year been released on DVD....

if you can find it.. its worth a gander.
heres a link to a review (http://www.lethaldeath.com/Crimson/Archives/ResidentDVDvil/Archives/RD_SpookSatByDoor.php)

as with the last movie.. heres another hip hop tidbit.. a snippet from this movie was used by Dead Prez on their freshman album "LETS GET FREE" quite a well executed album i must say. anyways.. if you knew the sample and saw this movie.. i think youd find it amusing.

this movie is called.."The Holy Mountain."
and I have yet to find a copy for myself.. but was lucky to have a friend bless me with the first 1/4 of the movie..

i cant begin to describe this movie.. but.. as you can tell by the above image.. its big with the japanese.

once again.. another hiphop group most of you are familiar with sampled this on their freshman album.. but... i think ill keep this one a secret.. because its too damn good.

this is the German poster

spirited away is a definite favorite of mine, i think i'll write all these suggestions you've made in the past few posts down and look out for the movies that i haven't seen. much props .

btw: i highly recommend robot carnival. it's several stories wrapped into one movie. the last really gets me..it's about this lonely scientist who builds a robot "wife". he loves her, but she can't love him back for obvious reasons...it's very sad.

a little bit of a revision

Al Green

He was one of the originators of abstract art. His early work showed a preoccupation with expressive distortion and unusual, often unrealistic, color. From 1911 to 1912, at the same time as the French painter Robert Delaunay, Kupka painted his first completely abstract works, such as Amorpha: Fugue in Two Colors (1912, Národní Galerie, Prague), consisting of colored circular forms and lines in a rhythmic arrangement. He continued his experiments in abstraction, grouping his work into five broad categories—Cycles, Verticals, Verticals and Diagonals, Triangles, and Diagonals. Not as influential as other abstract painters, Kupka did not receive deserved recognition until after his death.
— School of Paris painter and wood-engraver; a pioneer of abstract art. Born in Opocno in Eastern Bohemia. Apprenticed as a youth to a master saddler, who initiated him in spiritualism; became a medium. Began to paint and received his first instruction from Studnicka at Jaromer. Afterwards studied at Prague Academy 1889-92 under the Nazarene painter Sequens and at the Vienna Academy 1892-3 under Eisenmenger, also a Nazarene. Influenced by Czech folk art, abstract ornamental patterning and Theosophy. Settled in 1896 in Paris, where he worked first primarily as satirical draughtsman for magazines such as L'Assiette au Beurre and as book illustrator. A friend and neighbour of Jacques Villon from 1901, first in Montmartre, then from 1906 in Puteaux on the outskirts of Paris. His paintings influenced by Symbolism, then Fauvism; experimented from 1909 with ways of rendering figures in motion inspired by high-speed photography. From 1911 his work became abstract with cosmic themes and rhythms, intersecting arabesques, rectilinear vertical planes, etc. First Paris one-man exhibition at the Galerie Povolozky 1921. Wrote a book on his theories, La Cr-23ation dans les Arts Plastiques (first published 1923). Appointed professor by Prague Academy in 1922, to introduce Czech students in Paris to French culture. Co-founder of Abstraction-Cr-23ation 1931, and adopted a more geometrical and classical abstract style. Died in Puteaux.
— Kupka was born in Opocno in eastern Bohemia. From 1889 to 1892, he studied at the Prague art academy. At this time, he painted historical and patriotic themes. In 1892, Kupka enrolled at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Vienna, where he concentrated on symbolic and allegorical subjects. He exhibited at the Kunstverein, Vienna, in 1894. His involvement with theosophy and Eastern philosophy dates from this period. By spring 1896, Kupka had settled in Paris; there he attended the Académie Julian briefly and then studied with Jean-Pierre Laurens at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
Kupka worked as an illustrator of books and posters and, during his early years in Paris, became known for his satirical drawings for newspapers and magazines. In 1906, he settled in Puteaux, a suburb of Paris, and that same year exhibited for the first time at the Salon d’Automne. Kupka was deeply impressed by the first Futurist manifesto, published in 1909 in Le Figaro. Kupka’s work became increasingly abstract about 1910–1911, reflecting his theories of motion, color, and the relationship between music and painting. In 1911, he attended meetings of the Puteaux group. In 1912, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in the Cubist room, although he did not wish to be identified with any movement.
Creation in the Plastic Arts, a book Kupka completed in 1913, was published in Prague in 1923. In 1921, his first solo show in Paris was held at Galerie Povolozky. In 1931, he was a founding member of Abstraction-Création together with Jean Arp, Albert Gleizes, Jean Hélion, Auguste Herbin, Theo van Doesburg, and Georges Vantongerloo. During the early 1950s, Kupka gained general recognition. He died in Puteaux.

GASMASKCULTURE INSTALLMENT 1

Fitting the Gas Mask.

1. Loosen harness head straps.
2. Hold facepiece by straps and put chin in first.
3. Pull harness back over head.
4. Tighten lower straps first, by pulling end-tabs straight
back, not out. Tighten side straps the same way.
5. Push headband pad towards neck and repeat step 4.
If necessary, tighten the top strap(s) for best visibility and fit.

Air-Tightness Test

Perform this test each time the gas mask is put on to ensure a sufficient face-to-facepiece seal is achieved before exposure to a hazardous agent. Perform the test as follows:

1. Block off canister inlet using the palm of hand.
2. Inhale gently and hold breath for 10 seconds. If the seal is good, the facepiece will collapse and remain collapsed against face. Remove hand and breathe normally.
3. If the facepiece did not remain collapsed during the test, or any leakage is noticed, readjust straps and test again.
4. If this does not correct the leak, the mask will not provide protection. If the leakage is from the face seal, a different size mask may provide a good seal. If other than face seal leakage is detected, the condition must be corrected before performing another test.

ANSI Z88.10 provides guidelines on how to perform a proper fit test.

Gas Mask Care and Maintenance

Routinely inspect this gas mask for proper operation in anticipation of use in an emergency situation. Replace any components that are found to be defective. Look closely at the mounting thread for the filter and the head straps for excessive wear. If the face lens is badly scratched or yellowed get a replacement lens. You can clean the lens with a soft rag and window cleaner like Windex. To clean the mask, use a soft rag with a mild cleaner and warm water.

Good page, unfortunatley, I am on dial-up. Because I am on dial-up, it takes a "buttload" of time to load up all the images. Most of the images I enjoyed and most of the images (okay not most but...) are huge. It's just too much for my little machine. But I have a question about that movie, Triplets of belleville. You, Mr. BHope, said it was recently in theaters. I'm guessing you're not from the states. I'm guessing now... Because I saw a little trailer of that a few months ago on tv. And yes, the animation was pretty amazing. But I didn't catch the movie... Anyways, let me get to the question: Is that an IMAX only movie or is it one of those movies that are in selected cities?

I've been wanting to watch it only because of the graphics. I know "diddly-squat" about the storyline. The only thing I remember from the trailer was a little old lady with her dog in some type of caravan... I'm about to do a google search on this bitch.

No. It was a normal picture. I believe it catered to the smaller theatres though. Like the ones who mostly show independent films and the like. It really was a great movie though it kinda dragged in the middle. Being a competitive cyclist myself, I was more attracted to it than others might be.

As for the storyline... I guess it's about a small boy who's love for Europes cycling heros drives his ambition to become one himself. He goes from being a pudgy little boy to this emaciated upper body with out of proportion muscular legged man that dreams of competing in the Tour De France. His years of passion and dedication are supported by his mother who constantly "sags" behind him on his training rides and races to give him encouragement and support. His dream comes true and he race in the Tour De France but when he reaches the mountains the stronger riders drop him and many others. He's eventually kidnapped by some goons for gambling purposes. His mother spends the rest of the movie trying to rescue him. What makes it amazing is the lack of vocal dialogue. Most of the movie is just imagery. And if you're a cyclist in the know... a lot of the imagery is pretty cool.

It would have to be out on DVD by now. It came out before Kill Bill and that's out on DVD... or at least they're saying it is on the radio.

Chronicler of Russian crime
When Danzig Baldaev (pictured, sitting) was a boy his father, an eminent Buryat ethnographer, was denounced as an “enemy of the people” by the Soviet authorities. Danzig was later sent to work as a prison guard. His life’s work, the Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedia, has just been published by Steidl/Fuel. Photos by Sergei Vasiliev.

[img]http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/04/europe_russian_criminal_tattoos/img/2.jpg'>
A cry from the gulag
This anti-Soviet tattoo was found on a prisoner arrested for petty hooliganism in Leningrad in 1963. It says: “The convicts of the gulag are the new nation of the USSR bred by the Marxist devils”. Anti-Semitism, as represented by the Star of David, crops up frequently in Russian criminal tattoos.

[img]http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/04/europe_russian_criminal_tattoos/img/3.jpg'>
Women of colour
Many female criminals also tattooed themselves, partly as a rebellious reaction to the establishment and partly to distinguish themselves as what are known as vory v zakone (thieves in law). These women were photographed at a corrective labour colony at Kungur, near Perm.

A bit of political satire
This tattoo, dating from the early 1990s, was found on a man twice convicted for hooliganism. It says: “Boris, you’re right! I have always grasped and still grasp my glass with firm and steady hands! I’m not a runt like Mishka Gorbachev, who only drinks ryazhenka (a yoghurt drink).” The slogan on Gorbachev's head reads “Enemy of drunkenness".

[img]http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/04/europe_russian_criminal_tattoos/img/7.jpg'>
In praise of Boris
This political caricature was found on a prisoner who had fought for the Russian Army in Chechnya between 1994 and 1996. It is not clear if the wording is genuine or sarcastic. It reads: “Giant of Soviet thought, down the hatch, cheering Kremlin heart drops, for victory over Chechnya!!!”

[img]http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/04/europe_russian_criminal_tattoos/img/8.jpg'>
Glory to the party!
Long after the collapse of the Soviet Union many inmates and former prisoners were still walking around with tattoos berating or ridiculing the state. This one, found on a man in the city morgue at St Petersburg in 1997, says Glory to the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union). The man had been convicted of pulling down banners during the anniversary of the October 1917 revolution.

God of crime
The Russian word for God - Bog - is also an acronym used by criminals. It means "I shall rob again".

hey casek.. im wondering a few things.. what are you building your meshes in? can you export as vectors? like.. with a swift3d plugin.. or a similar type of plug in..

because my guess looks like your taking a polygon mesh image bringing it into photoshoppe and applying the color blocks and shadows.. if this is the case it doesnt seem integrated enough... i really like the feel too..

there was an image posted on here a while back.. it was a really long tall image with an olive background and red/dark grey shapes and forms running down it.. as far as i could tell this was some rendered shapes output and assembled as vectors in illustrator or something.. anyways that image seems to me has the feel im talking about.. does anyone remember the image im talking about? i think tyler durden posted it.. and i remember being real hype on the website for a hot minute.

anyways.. id like to know a little bit more about how youre doing it.. im looking to start working on some 3d models but i need a 3d program for Mac.. if anyone has any hook ups id super appreciate it.

...this thread is really taking off i have to thank you all for contributing and making it something to check regularly for needed doses of inspiration...

al, i'm using 3dstudio max 6.01 and photoshop cs. you pretty much summed up what i'm doing. lots of layers...

as far as turning them into vector shapes, i'm pretty sure that i could, but i'm really not man enough...ha! j/k

i'm really trying to develop this out more, so you'll have to excuse the baby steps in my work. haven't quite got a hand of illustrator as of yet, either.

glad you like the direction i'm heading in. thanks for the compliments.

as for the 3d stuff for macs...ugh. i tried to help Joker out with this, but was unable. i'm using a pc and i thought he was until i sent him the cd's...heh. ahh! lightwave, maybe. i know there's a version of maya out for macs, but the version i see on kazaa seems to be pc. gah!

anyway, i'll post more later. maybe tonight the insomnia will drive me to do something different with my renderings?

one of the most disturbing thing about the 80's is that every cartoon i remember watching was solely based around the need to sell toys..

now.. its one thing to make toys from an existing show.. as part of a marketing plan..

its a completely different level to make a show around toys and merchandised licenses for backpacks, lunchboxes, underwear, wonderwear, toothpaste etc etc etc.

and on top of that use every commercial break to get us fiending for some over sugary cereal.

well centurions to me sums up the beginning of this partly because it sucked soooo damn bad and was so cheap.. and very very 80's.... thanks hannah barbera.

When I was a kid I was mad in to Gi Joe.. we didn’t have Gi Joe in the uk, we had Action Force, same characters but re-branded for the English market. When I was about 7 a comic store opened in my home town and they stocked the Gi joe comic, from then on I bought it pretty much religiously till it died out in the early 90’s..It’s recently been reborn like very other 80’s toy related comic but it aint the same. Apart from the stories (mainly about ninjas) I loved the art work and was also obsessed by the ads for American candy and products we never got in the uk….YO JOE!
